I still personally think for the time being that a Quad core processor will just be simply overkill. most games as it is arent really SMP aware and my 2nd core is usually just downloading files with newsleecher while i game. OP sounds to be on alimited budget so I still think a dual core would be plenty with room to upgrade as time progresses to a better cheap when prices become cheaper
if i do what you guys say and get 1 8800.. then i would have enought to do what you guys are saying with the intel mobo, and quad core processor, ill just have to work weekends once school starts to get enough to get the second 8800 for sli.. then ill have a sick set up right?
If you do that, and finaly get the second 8800GTX it would be VERY close to the BEST you can build with as much money as you could spend. You could send another 3000 bucks building a PC but you won't gain but a tiny bit of score on a benchmark, and you wouldn't really see a difference playing games. They'd feel about the same.
I think you are good enough mate, im probably worse than you and i get some pretty kick ass performances with my amd, dont listen to the people who are pro intel. AMD is cheaper and works better than intel so tell me whuy should i buy intel? O see mp reaspm Ive had an AMD for years and it still runs the games prefectly fine, pls stop fihghting over stupid crap like intel and amd because they both work just fine.

by looking at his original specs I don't quite think the OP is looking in the 1k+ processor range. However wicked it may be I personally at the moment see no reason for a quad core unless you're into video encoding quite often and your codec (x264, DivX etc) supports it.
Well if you look at the Benchmarks of a $400 Dollar Q6800 vs the C2Extreme which cost $900 GRANTED the C2Extreme Benchmark more then its Quad Core Brother, the Quad is Much more Bang for the buck. And Certainly better then anything AMD brings to this market segment.
Sorry, I've been in Hawaii for a week getting married so I'm out of the loop at the moment, but where is a 400 dollar Q6800? I see a Q6600 for 319..

AMD certainly works, but RIGHT NOW AMD is Between Products. INTEL just released their newest, which seriously brought down their Quad Cores, and make them the best value/proformance. In 2 years I think AMD will be the King of the Hill, hopefuly they can make the ATI deal work for them.
ok what about the q6600 for processor, and the SUS P5N32-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
The 680i is a great chipset for that Processor. Make sure you check customer reviews on it. 680i has been a little bit tricky for some manufactures so make sure this one works it out well. Asus usualy does a pretty damn good job at it, and I think they were the first Manufacturer to offer the 680i
Get a raptor HD.Although i agree going for the best you can when you upgrade, this is unfortunately bad times for the top gear. You should call up the AOC company, well email more likely and ask if there engine actually makes use of even one 8800 card, because most games do not even use the 640 memory. So having two in sli at this point is a waste of upgrade.By the the time games actually start taking advantage of the 8800 cards in sli, there will prolly be drivers that actually work like they should and better cards also.
Not sure about that FX chip is that the quad chip?Again this can vary over many different games, especially if games are not really coded for DX10,they are running better on single chips, sometimes you even have to disable one core just to get programs to work,if you are using dual cores. There has been tests proving quads to outdo some other chips but barely and at times they are inferior. So really what i am saying is that because of the lack of drivers and support for these high end cards, youd just be wasting your money.Wait until VISTA has drivers that actually perform the way they should on vista and also hope that games start making use of DX10 and allow these 640+mb cards to be usefull.Even the top of the heap unreal boys at epic are not going to make there game usefull for any of these top end cards or chips.Even the quake dude said he doesn't believe in those new XF graphic boards that hit the market lately. So i think all the DEVS and vid card manufacturers are lazy and not willing to move into the future just yet.
I am telling you this because i have the same sorta setup you are planning on buying and i wish i waited until vista became stable and actually supported.Pretty sad how giants like ATI and nvidia can realease products they cant even write proper drivers for, since the vista platform has been at there disposal for well over a year now.Call up the game you wish to play and make sure.

well... they said that AoC was gonna use dx10.. and these 8800s are the new dx10 cards, doesnt that mean AoC is taking advantage of the card?
well... they said that AoC was gonna use dx10.. and these 8800s are the new dx10 cards, doesnt that mean AoC is taking advantage of the card?
and also... would it make much difference if i got a 8800 gts vs a 8800 gtx???
Yes, in planning for future DX10 games, the 8800 series is a good choice. I personally went with the 8800GTS 640MB, which runs any recent game with ease. However, I'll most likely be wishing I had the GTX for upcoming games like AoC. It's really hard to say which to get. The GTS is probably the better bang for your buck, but the GTX is noticeably faster. The 320MB GTS is a bit cheaper, and you might not be needing the 640MB for AoC, but it will come in handy for future games if you keep using the card for a couple years. It's only like, $50 more for the 640MB? I don't know. Three cards, hard choice.
SLI/Crossfire is definitely not worth it now and I doubt it ever will be; costs too much, isn't that much faster, and uses too much power/runs hot. You might want to stick with that 700W PSU though for future upgrades.
I'm running Vista 64-bit on a new PC much like what you want, and it is nothing less than a pain in the ass. It's really just not worth all the problems, and you will have much better performance with XP-Pro. It has a 64-bit verison, although there is no point to 64-bit as of yet. You can always get Vista a couple years in the future when it's working better, if you really want it.
You'll also want your CPU, even if it's quad/dual core, running at least up to 3.0ghz. Overclocking 0.4 ghz or whatever is easy if you follow instructions, and you shouldn't have to worry about voltage usage or temperature rising for such a small increase in speed.
As for Hard Drive, Western Digital Raptors are faster, but you won't even notice the difference unless you have two in RAID 0; you can do that with any SATA HD though. They're just really expensive for what little storage they provide. I'd rather go with one large SATA HD at 7200RPM as I'd rather have plenty of storage for a good price.

Hello AoC fans I have spent my whole summer vacation working hard to get enough money to build a new system
what i plan on getting is: 2, 18x dvd burners. - they do it all. reads cds dvds burns cds and dvds.. 320 gig 7200 rpm sata 3.0 hard drive 22" widescreen LCD monitor 2, EVGA, Nvidia 8800GTS 640MB.. and ill have both in SLI mode. OCZ, SLI compatible 700 watt power supply Logitec speakers, gaming mouse and keyboard 3 gigs corsair XMS2 memory.. to start. may get more if you guys say i should... AMD Athalon 64 FX-62 2.8 GHz processor and.. an Asus M2N -SLI deluxe Nvidia Nforce 570 sli MCP MoBo( i dont know what half these breviations mean) (except MoBo.. i like that one .. hehe) Vista 64 bit edition and some fans.. .. would this run AoC? i would greatly appreciate your expertise
Running AOC definetly. Upgrade you Mobo and proccesor and there is no reason you shouldn't go max. As for gaming GPU there isn't much better and in SLI it should rock. I'd personaly drop AMD and go quad core atm due to the low price. you can get a 1333MHz MB and dual core and OC it up to 3GHz with out spending a whole lot right now. I'd also get Pioneer ram, only 2 gigs for dual channel and then OC it. It's built for over clocking. If you OC your whole system you might want to get a slightly better PSU. With SLI and OC it can tax your power supply. With that set up you can run any game for the next 2 years on max settings. Also if you don't liquid cool make sure you have a case designed for maximum cooling.
On that note, any one know what is better? For $100 more you can get a quad core, or for $100 less you can get a 1333mhz core 2 duo.
One more thing, on Newegg I saw some great deals on "opened box" merchendise. Some really top end stuff that would put together a system for over $5000.00. But at the price listed it would run about $1800.00 for every thing. Is this stuff used crap that you can't return? I haven't built a system for a while and the last one I duid was off pricegrabber. How is the return policy for newegg? Is this stuff even worth buying?
A core 2 extreme for $250 sounds too good to be true.

Somebody returned it for a reason. Sometimes its just compatability problems with a Mobo they had, or Ram, and they couldn't figure it out. Theres no way to know, but if they are willing to let you test it out, you MIGHT be able to get a decent deal. Personaly theres 2 things I don't like to buy USED, and NEW UNUSED is always better; Women, and Processors. LoL.
I would make the following changes in total, but none of them are more dramatic then the MoBo Processor, but here I go. 1. Switch to Intel Q6800 I don't beleive there is such a thing (Please tell me if I'm worng), but there is a qx6800, which runs at $1,200, and the one he listed is only about $200. I doubt he has the money. AMDs are crap though, and I recomend a E6600. Its only $220 and can be OC'd to about 3.2 from the 2.4 factory speed. Edit: I just saw your post saying you meant the q6600. Not a bad processor, but I would still go with the e6600 because the 1066fsb of the quad core processor will bottleneck it and make it run at slower speeds. The increase in dual cores from 1066 to 1333 fsb is only about 1%, not worth it. 2. Go with a cheaper Ram and only do 2 gig to save money, as you'll only be able to use around 2.5 gigs of it anyway due to 32 bit address mapping will be extremely limited due to the hardware required memory address mapping. The benifits of the best ram vs the worse isn't nearly enough to justify much more money. I agree, 3gb is a waste because its not dual channel. Get 2 x 1Gb and you will have plenty of room to upgrade. (The XMS2 is fine RAM to go with though, as long as you get the 2gb.) 3 Go with 1 8800GTX and save 100-150bucks. Its more then enough to handle the newest games, and you can still add another one later. I'm going to have to disagree on this one, it will save money, but the speed increase from running SLI GTS's over 1 GTX is just too great to pass up. (If you have the money that is.) And you will be set for a long time into the future. And if you want to get just one card, get the ultra, not the gtx. 4. Drop one of the DvD players, unless you do that much disc copying, otherwise its just a little redundant. Very true, 2 dvd burners are completly useless. One will be perfectly fine. 5. Go with 2 WD Raptors (I know some people love those 7200's, but I dont) RAID O I'd have to half agree on this one. Get one raptor, and get another hdd at 7200 rpm and 250gb and run those in RAID with the raptor of course as your master. This way you have plenty of space and speed. Thats just what I think anyway, still a nice post by Techon. - axehero
