Your favourite MMOG genre (poll)

I'm sure there are similar polls already, but the search feature gives me errors and I couldn't spot any by looking quickly through the first 250 threads, so my apologies in advance. But, to the question...

What's your favourite MMOG genre?

Some might not have any existing MMOGs yet, but I've included some sources/IPs for reference. Unfortunately polls are limited to 10 options. I hope I picked the most important genres.

I am gonna have to go with Pirates for this poll.

PotBS is looking to be one of the funnest MMOs in development. Can't wait to give it a test play.

    Eternally mine,

I picked Sci-Fi, but I don't mind if it combines a bit of fantasy stuff (kind of like in RF, but still a Sci Fi game)

    Current MMO: FFXIV:ARR

Past MMO: Way too many (P2P and F2P)

If there are genres people miss, please post them. I saw Western was included in the official mmorpg.com poll (though that one had only 4 options). Historically correct games (WWII Online, or a realistic medieval game) might have been worth including too.

Just goes to show how much of a market there is for a great Sci-fi MMO then...

Well my favorite is fantasy stuck into the medieval era. But the market is definately oversaturated with these so any other genre would be a nice change of pace.

In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.

Doesn't relally matter to me as long as its a good game. I voted High Fantasy as that has had more of the better games IMO. Though I'm not sure how High Fantasy is different from Sword & Sorcery.

Yes with 24 votes so far, it must be very accurate

I feel the same way as the poster above me. I really don't care the genre of the game as long as it is done well. So I couldn't choose any of the choices.

edit:  make that 2 posters above me.

Hmm, I'm not too sure what genre FF11 falls under.

I'd say it's close enough to place it in the High Fantasy genre. There's bound to be a lot of blurring and mixing of genres anyway. Deadlands MMOG anyone? :)

    Definetly sword and sorcery.....

I love the old swordsmen and those mages with those elemental types of magics ^^

    Cheers

I'd like to see a Star Ocean 2 setting for an MMO. not a SO2 MMO (the single player is good enough) but something set in its theme. Disc 2 theme for sure. Fantasy style weapons + spells in a post modern world that has alien technology scattered about. I'm with most everyone else though: "No more Elves and Goblins!". Even if a new game comes out fantasy style why can't they think of a new race? Has it all really been done? Make a race up (with good lore of course); isnt that what designers get paid to do? Innovate.

High fantasy. Probably the only genre of books I read and the only game I would truly enjoy playing.

Well i almost did sci-fi as im loving EvE and thats sci-fi [funnily enough lol ]. So instead i chose the supernatural one as that is something id like to see one day [and will if White wolfe/CCP get there way].

I'd love to see a mixture of high fantasy and horror/supernatural. But because I haven't noticed anything like this yet, I'll go with sword and sorcerry.

I am currently dismayed at the level of crappiness which most Sci-Fi MMORPGs have.  Even so I voted for it.  If the genre is looking for innovation they should go in this direction.

Current Sci-Fi MMORPGs either adapt an EQ-esque system (SWG) or an FPS-esque (PlanetSide, Tabla Rasa(I think)) system.  Innovation could be spawned with a mixture.  The problems that occur with the fanatasy break true realism (shooting point blank at bugs).  FPS MMORPGs seem to fail in a different manner (for me).  They aren't very MMO-esque.

I'd really like to see a Mad Max type MMORPG which would establish a new combat/crafting/pvp system.

This poll has nothing to do with "Genres", you are just mentioning different graphical themes. a "genre poll" would include answers like Western MMOs(Wow, WAR), Asian (Lineage 2 etc), Sandbox MMOs (SWG etc), First person MMOs (planetside)

Design and theme is NOT what defines a genre. Or do you think EvE and SWG fit in the same genre cause they are both using a sci-fi theme?

  • DreamagramDreamagram Member Posts: 798

Whoa! What happened here? Last time I checked this poll it didn't even have 100 votes. Did somebody link it to their guild or something? :p

Ok, maybe I used the wrong term. I think people get the point though. ;)

Edit: "What's your favourite literary genre for use as an MMOG setting?" maybe?

Sci-fi by far. Space can humble a man but dragons and midgets makes for quite a retarded experience.

  • SolanarSolanar Member UncommonPosts: 188

high fantasy, but with none of that magic crap or screwed up races. damn make ASoIaF into mmo, or WoT.

Gothic Sci-fi MMO would be the ultimate graphical theme. I want a 40k MMO sooo badly.

Generaly, there are far more good high-fantasy mmos than good sci fi mmos out there, but i really do like the theme of sci-fi
