Funcom and Eidos announce new release date for Age of Conan
Funcom and Eidos announce a new release date for 'Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures'.
Durham, USA – August 10th, 2007 – Funcom and Eidos announce a new release date for 'Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures'. The highly anticipated MMO is now set to release on the 25th of March 2008. By setting a new release date for the game, Funcom can continue the focus on honing, polishing and improving the heralded qualities of the game, ensuring a fantastic MMO experience when it launches next spring.
“We naturally regret that we have to push back ‘Age of Conan’. However, after careful consideration, and analysis of recent Beta feedback, we believe that the new release date is in the best interest of the gamers, our company and our owners,” said Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. “We are fully committed to delivering games with absolute qualities, and in the current MMO marketplace we know that only the best is good enough to truly succeed. With the new release date we have therefore given ourselves more time to meet and deliver on the massive expectations for the game. We are certain that our choice will ultimately pay off, and that all ‘Age of Conan’ players will get a special online experience."
”We are honored by the immense reception our game is constantly getting, with an astounding amount of positive press coverage, awards and magazine covers, but we still see that we need to polish some aspects of the game even further, especially when it comes to the entry barriers,” said Gaute Godager, founder of Funcom and Producer / Director on ‘Age of Conan’. “With the added development time we can now deliver something even more unique and powerful, something which is worthy of the incredible Conan legacy.”
‘Age of Conan’ is consistently mentioned as one of the most anticipated PC games in development. It has received numerous magazine covers and awards, including 'Best MMO of E3' awards from IGN, GameSpot, GameSpy and Yahoo. ‘Age of Conan’ is a key title in Microsoft's Games for Windows line-up, as well as being a showcase DirectX 10 title for nVidia. The game is currently in general Beta, and applications for testing are available at www.ageofconan.com.

I thought it.. they started recently with the closed public beta.. so there was almost no way to release it at 30. Oct.
Now WAR and AoC will release at almost the same time.. i really dont know if this is good or not. But anyway it is better to finish and polish a game, than to release it bugridden and unfinished.
uh oh, I don't want to be the one to tell my friend this news.
I think it is good that they keep it longer in developement. Hopefully it be more balanced and bug free then. No use releasing to early and dissappointing huge amount of players with an unfinished game.
Hopefully more peeps will get a chance to play Beta as well then

Both games have a strong market. I really don't think either game will have their initial numbers affected by a close release.

I replied about this at the Aoc forums here at mmorpg.com. Both will be affected by this.. of course both will get their fanboys, but i talk about the large number of subscriber, about the casuals, about the player, which never ever read a forum.. I talk about the masses, and about if one of those games will be a huge success or not. I talk about 300-500k subs+, and not just 100k, which both will have anyway.
I was going to buy AOC and play until WAR came out. I might have gotten hooked and not bothered with WAR (heheheeh, not likely!) I am sure others were planning to do the same and some would have stopped with AOC. Now though, I feel that if both games are released at the same time, WAR will be the one I try first... I have just been anticipating this game forever, nothing against AOC which will be great too.

If both reach 250K they will be consider a success. There is a big enough market to support both having 350K+ which will exceed previous releases by both companies. Will one be bigger then the other... I think so... pretty sure WAR will attract more casual players and have a bigger subscriber base... I do not think this news really impacts the initial numbers which will be closer to 75K for each in the first month.

Yeah. I guess a lot will think like you, but especially the casuals, which not really follow a development process pre release. They will see both games, and will try out one of them. And now is the question what game, they will play first? But anyway.. funcom had to push back the release, because they will do better with a polished product, even when they have a big competitor in this time frame. So there was no real choice for funcom.
Those who really wanted to play AoC, still will and the likelihood that they'll love what they see will be 5 times bigger.

AoC will be there for you when you get bored of WAR, it's all good.
Anyone got one of these flame retardant suits handy?...
Well this is good news. It might Save AoC from being a flop.
Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)
Good thing, the longer they work on it the better it will be.

With Age of Conan, Warhammer Online and Wrath of the Lich King now all releasing at or around the same time it will be very interesting.
Looks like Gods and Heroes will benefit the most from this(well, that's if they don't see a similar delay).
LoL winter will be long !!!
Good for Aoin if they not do the same thing for this game too!!
I think Conan is going to win the war between the two. Only reason I say thing. Most people know Conan, very few people know Warhammer.
I like Warhammer myself, so It will be interesting to see.
Gamers know Mythic, DAoC, and the RvR they created. I’m excited to try out an improved RvR model. I don’t think IP is going to decide anything but rather it will be the scope, design, and quality of the game. On these aspects I imagine the creators of DAoC have experience and the upper hand.
Fion, your like for aoc and dislike for war is getting the best of you
Weren't you one of the people on aoc forums (here) saying that aoc will meet october release just fine? Even though it's ~3 months away and Funcom just now started closed gameplay (not technical) beta and invited 150 players.
But war that is ~9 months from March (but they saied early q1, so more like mid february) is very unlikely to meet that release date. even though War has been in beta for a month or so and just this week added 2000 people to US and 4000 to Euro beta.
You can't have it both ways unless you think that funcom somehow tests twice as fast as mythic. Ither both aoc and war will need to push back again, or nither will. (also the fact you though aoc with 3 months before release is doign fine but war with up to 9 months is in deep trouble is amusing)
You know what this also shows? Funcom aint playin for chump change. They just challenged Mythic to a game of chicken.
Funcom wants this game to be BIG.
