SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

This week's Friday Feature on the Star Wars Galaxies official site is a sneak peek at what's in store for Chapter 7, the next free expansion for Star Wars Galaxies.

During SOE Fan Faire 2007, the Star Wars Galaxies team shared a preview of Chapter 7 during the Galaxies Gathering session. If you didn't make it to Fan Faire this year, here's your chance to get an early look at the exciting new features planned for the next Chapter! Heroic encounters, a collection system, species origins, and more are all on deck for Chapter 7.

Heroic Encounters

A heroic encounter is a high-level challenge for a group of players looking to earn a huge reward. These encounters will take place in an instanced zone where players will take on challenging foes in epic battles like no other.

During the Galaxies Gathering, the team gave panel attendees a sneak peek at Axkva Min and her protectors.

Players who complete a quest or a series of quests can gain access to the underground caves where Axkva Min has been sealed after falling out of favor with the Nightsisters. The group of up to eight players will encounter multiple protectors, each with their own abilities, creating a series of boss fights culminating in a grand battle with a newly re-designed Axkva Min.

In these heroic encounters and quests, high level players can not only confront Axkva Min, but also a legion of Tusken warriors, as well as other familiar faces in the Star Wars universe.

Read more about Chapter 7 here.

So, SWG gives us WoW style instances.

    Ho hum.

These guys need to realize that the ongoing copying of WoW, but in less polished form, is not helping them.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

I'll judge it once I play it, but it's still cool to make sweeping generalizations.

The Heroic Encounters and the Collection system sounds alot like EQ2 to me. But thats a good thing! Wonder if they'll show up on the screen as little question marks?

I guess Ill check in AGAIN like I did with Ch 6. Not expecting much though.

Good grief, SOE's number one response to low subs is to add or increase raid content, despite the fact that raiders are and always will be a niche market.  Talk about a lazy developing company.  They deserve to have a bunch of loser games with low subs with that kind of mentality.

With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

Well, it sounds good. Chapter 6 was quite good, BUT: SWG has almost no working guilds now. At least last I checked shortly after the last chapter launched. It has NO planetary or global channels, which making finding a group hilarious.

Do they finally add planetary channels, or is it still only shout and yell?

((well i quit the game cause i got a vibe that it was starting to resemble World of Warcraft after the NGE, and after a visit and march and about a month ago that confirmed it a bit.   This just seals the deal.  their doing well i guess, but still not good enough for me.  if i were Soe, id pray that lucas arts doesn't make a kotor era/etc mmo.   also if i were lucas arts id be wondering over my pass decisions.  it is a joint effort tween the two, but soe's other games aren't that fun at all imho.   i hope they don't screw with the DC Comics mmo, then i might be royally pissed.  for now i just observe.lol.

A legion of sand people? In Star Wars Galaxies? Can you guys imagine your FPS dropping to 12 because of the crappy engine that game runs on?

    I am:

Aserhe - Twi'lek - Scylla Galaxy (swg) [canceled]
    Exar - Dark Elf - Lucan D'lere (eq2) [canceled]
Narlash - Night Elf - Emerald Dream (wow) [Active]

I am perplexed by the forced-grouping direction.  More people seem to be interested, in 2007, in soloable content than being required to have to "look for a group" or "look for more" to experience a game they pay money for.

I think SWG is a great game.  However, SWG is one game in which community and social interaction thrives in a voluntary way.  I see no need for forced-group content.

It's not really forced though.  It's optional.  What about the loot?  I don't know what will happen with this, but with all the other instances in SWG you could buy 90% of the rewards from those that had done the instances without you ever having to have done it yourself.  This includes expansion based instances...which meant for most items you didn't have to buy the expansion if you didn't want to and not be at a disadvantage.  You'll need to expect to pay rather well for these items tho, initially at least, but that getting credits is soloable and can be done however you like ;)

Overall though, the SWG community has been asking for new group content for years now, it had to happen eventually.  The Collections stuff seems to be mostly solo-based content though...so there's a mix of both.

Really looking formward for it. Heroic encounters...mmmkay not bad but I really love the idea of collections :)

    Oh btw NGE2007 > CU/PRE-CU > NGE2005 (it's just my opinion)

And this is comming from a vet banned twice from forum because asking "why" when NGE2005 :l

Wondered why my "has slain Axkva Min" badge had disappeared all of a sudden last time I tried to give SWG another go :(

Fan Faire was very educational.  Talking to Develpers of SWG and listening to the presentations was very telling.  What I can say is there is policy that was set with the launch of the NGE that the team has to adhear to.  Example: No Spice and support for the FPS combat.  The team is smaller but working very well together to produce content but mostly fixing bugs or replacing bugged code.  These folks care about the game very much but are quick to profess they have limits.  There are good things coming with SWG but its far from being a complete game (to both devs and community).  If you don't like what is there now, just wait another 3 month and see if it has changed more to your liking.  Chapter 8 will pay attention to Space and additional ground content.  Space will not be changed but new content should be added and important bugs fixed.  Ground content will most likely come in further Quests and Encounters but is undefined.  There will also be future work on professions that need help, like Smugglers who are not happy with the current Smuggling system.

As to SOE's crappy games, I got to see The Agency preview.  This could turn out to be mediocre but its got a great start.  If nothing else, SOE has opened this genera for MMO developement.  I liked it.  This comes from a player who swore to never play anyother SOE MMO's.  FPS extreme, "Boom, Head Shot."

Free Realm is very family centric game.  On a scale of maturity between Toon Town and 2nd Life, it would fall right in the middle for everyone.  Hard core players will hate it but Parents who want to play with thier younger children should like it.

Pirates of the Burning Sea is a very tempting offer.  I really liked the game play and the ground combat was very well done.

    Hello, Obraik.

I believe, in 2007, that solo content is the sine qua non of a successful MMORPG.  Solo content that is meaningful, fun, apart of the game's lore and story.  I think grouping should be optional in regards to solo content; i.e., a group of 2 or more friends would ensure the completion of the Quest was easier and more efficient.  At the heart of it, people want options and solo content is indispensable.

What server were you on? I know Starsider has several active guilds.

There are plenty of channels available to find a group if you're not in a guild.

Pretty odd to add group quests when it is neigh impossible to even find people to group with.

I love that comment above about Starsider, I play on that server and I am lucky to see 5 people in a couple hours!  It is the most dead server out there.

I hope it works, but I think they will have to start completly from scratch to get all the old players to even TRY this game againn

    O rly?

Any time I do group stuff, my usual issue is that there's not enough group slots for the people that want to go.  The new Meta group thing they're proposing will be a bonus :)

If what you say is true, why then is WoW far and away the most popular game out there? It's loaded with content that requires a group to access it.

Make me wonder about the ethics of a company that continually adds things post-NGE that should have been implemented in the first place, and still charge people the full sub fee.

Indeed *cough* and everywhere I turn, I see people complaining about how WoW changes from a casual solo experience from 1-70 to a hardcore forced grouping game if you want to see any worthwhile content once you hit 70. There are many reasons for WoW being popular, but group content is not it.
