Great move from PE. Nothing really changes actually, only that SOE won't be on the box anymore. Their roles are still the same though. The game gets more appealing now for people that won't touch a SOE related product. Again, excellent move but nothing really new though.
ROFL.. some of you people on this dang site (and outside of this site) are so freaken ignorant and stuck-up.
"Has SOE on the box. WON'T BUY IT!" "Envolves SOE. WON'T BUY IT!" They screwed up SWG, but that was with LucasArts approval so don't ever forget that. They fixed EQ1 before Brad tanked it. I will admit they drove it a bit to far with so many expansions. EQ2 had a ruff start, but turned into a fantastic game. Planetside is doing better and continues to grow. Matrix Online sucks due to concept.. come on.. that concept is just.. dumb.. movies are "Ok", but a game? No thanks. Not SOEs fault. Vanguard is doing much better then before and they are improving it at a hugely rapid rate. You people act like they are the freaken plague. Your under-educated brains can't comprehend the differense between. PUBLISHER and DEVELOPER. They have absolutely NO SAY in the final product. You need to understand this. They're a good company, but to many idiots screwed up their good name. Not them. Your half-arse assumptions is what screwed it. Now you spread your stupid lies accross the web and cause discontent in others. Anyway.. whatever.. I planned to try it weither SOEs name was on it or not.. i'm not that shallow
If you look at SOE's track record that should speak for itself. No one gives a crap about everquest 1. Only SOE fanboi's seem to bring that up when the company is dogged. First impressions are always the most important. After alienating a large playerbase as a first impression they deserve to be ragged on and alienated by the playerbase.
If you love SOE then that's your business but don't assume that others are so readily to accept half-hearted appologies and dumb excuses like "we didn't know. we had a miscommunication." (reffering to thier explaination why they kept changing the game and not adding content.)
SWG = bombing. I doubt it was lucas arts idea to put in a Everquest control scheme. If you want to believe SOE's lines of bs then more power to ya.
EQ series = SOE's money maker. This is the only game they don't seem to want to mess with.
Planetside = least said about this title the better
The Matrix Online = Tanked for a reason. Most of the players were SWG refugees. When they heard SOE was taking over for WBE that hit them with bitter memories and they left before they recieved more of the same.
Vanguard = Almost everyone I talked to said the game is recieving updates as you stated. However, the same players also say the game is boring and they don't have the patience to stick around.
SOE are still the publisher + I played the beta round my mates house and it was baddddd.

Actually the only ignorant person would be someone who gets fucked over by a person and or company then turns right around and hands them more money. Sony does well and makes good games. But what they did with SWG was inexcusable and thus I will no longer play any game ever made by SOE nor will I buy any product made by sony. Furthermore i will never willingly give a company money that in turn gives money to SOE , ie. publisher.
But anyone else wanting to throw there money at em, I dont complain .
God some of you are so ignorant. SOE was a publisher at the time of MANY of those games you so claim that SOE "screwed you over."
They had no dang say in the game yet you continued to blame them. What a shame. People these days.. shesh so stupid. Do your research before blabbing off whos fault it was.
SOE told the trueth about SWG. LA blamed it on SOE when SOE was just publishing the game. NO DEVELOPING IT. THEY WAS CONTRACTED BY LA TO *HELP* DEVELOP IT, BUT LA HAD TOTAL CONTROL OF ALL ASSETS AND THE DIRECTION OF THE GAME. It is stated BY LA they wanted a more "Starwars feel and immersion" to the damn game. Sort of like their single-players, but on massive scale. THAT was a call made by LA. SOE just carried it out as was told, but no matter wtf is said you'll continue to blame SOE for crap.
WTF now you are blaming Vanguard on SOE.. LMFAO.. see it's the same freaken crap with SWG. All people are going to say is "SOE screwed me over in Vanguard! ZOMG!" when all they are trying to do is waste their money to fix the pile of garabage and please people as much as they freaken can. Yet people continue to whine and whine.
What's wrong with planetside? It has around 40k subscriptions. That's plenty for a niche game like that. From what I hear more people are joining as they been adding more content. Their new update gained a lot of uproar when displayed at a game con.
EQ2 subs have been going up.. especially with the announcement of Kunark. Hell i'm even interested. I'd even play EQ1 again if the grind was more time friendly for me, but now that i'm not a kid anymore and don't have 12hrs a day to do wtfever I want.. EQ1 isn't an option for me.
As I said about the Matrix. It was doomed before it released regardless of who made it. It's just a poor pile of crap concept in the first place. Atleast SOE had the balls to try and fix it up.
Hell even their mini game "Infantry" is freaken awesome to play.. wish they never changed it to Pay2Play, but that's what happens when it becomes to popular. Remember playing that all the dang time.. good times.
You act like they put the same developer on every single game, but in reality the majority of the games team is the ORIGINAL TEAM that made the damn game in the first place.
Maybe you should suck up your pride and judge a game by it's content.. not by a freaken name on the box or a logo on start-up.. you people don't know a fking damn thing apparantly when it comes to development teams, but wtfever.
I don't even know why i'm bothering.. you people have got it set in stone in your minds that SOE is the devil company.

Well, as I said in another thread, going by some of your misguided understandings of "publisher", Fileplanet must be the biggest publishing powerhouse in the world. After all, they advertise all those games on their site (marketing), they make available to the public all those games on their site through Direct2Drive (retail distribution).
Get a grip.
Edit: Oh, hell. MMORPG.COM is publisher of alot of games, too!! They advertise and make games available to the public!!
Seriously, some of you need to actually read instead of going by your SOE-hate filled "visions" of the truth.
When I think of publishing an MMO, I think of who is going to supply the servers. Does this mean that servers are not going to be supplied by SOE? I think the best example of why PE is doing this is the situation around Vanguard. SOE took on Vanguard when it was in bad shape. That is not the case of G&H.
I took a look at this game at Fan Faire. Nice graphics and semi-intersting content. To me, seemed just another fantasy MMO that really didn't catch my eye. I may be to unfair.
The game to watch from SOE will be the Agency. It may be a nich game on par with Planetside but could be bigger as the concept and presentation was real good. At least SOE is breaking in a new genera of Spy MMO's. I swore to never give SOE anymore money for another game but this one sure is very tempting.
Pirates of the Burning Sea looks great. Its got Ship combat, Ground Combat and Boarding actions all set in the confines of the Carribian. It will launch with very basic content of what looks historically is accurate and expand to more mythical content (I.E. Sea Monsters and Ghost Ships. Expansions probably will be other oceans.
The one thing I missed at Fan Faire was anything to do with DC Heroes Online. There were devs with T-shirts but I was too busy running around to the SWG panels to stop one and ask about it. There was no formal promotions for it at any rate.
Do you mean to tell me that SOE are still not shitting gold !!!! Unbelievable, the worldwide community (yeah right) told them that we would boycott everything they ever did, supported, published, sneezed upon, looked at until they learned to be perfect and make everything bright and shiny.
Well, I was one of the ones that bought ( insert name of generic MMO) from them ( or maybe someone before them - who cares) and then they try to change things without first consulting these forums.!!!
Therefore they deserve the flaming they get.
And dont try and tell me that they dont read and worry about every single nasty post that is made on these and countless other forums cos I wont believe you. I am sure, in fact positive, in fact its now a fact - that they employ armies of fanbois to sit and read all anti-SOE posts. (probably have a press clippping somewhere to prove it)
Now, who made the rubiks cube cos that pisses me off too.
So now we know TWO things about perpetual Entertainment. 1. Willing to get in to bed with SOE. 2. Not afraid to lie about it. So basically, willing to sleep with skeezy whores, but will deny it to their friends
No, now we know you don't read before replying.
Which part do you think I didn't read? The relationship between PE and SOE is unchanged, other than PE trying to distance themselves by removing the SOE log from the box. SOE is still doing the physical publishing of the game, PE is just not bragging about it. Maybe YOU didn't read before replying if you think the publishing arrangement has changed... other than trying to keep that arrangement on the down-low.

I might be able to clear this up. I believe the previous poster was mentioning how you didn't read the replies which, if you look closely, clearly explain some things. The general attitude of your first post shows that you don't understand the concept of publishing because you are attributing SoE's role in this game as a negative.
Let me explain it to you in a simple example. Harry Pottter was pubilshed by Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic. I'll make this clear, SCHOLASTIC (Pubilsher, Ie SoE) DID NOT WRITE THE BOOK, but in fact J.K. Rowling (The Author, ie Developers), did. Oh yes, Scholastic is still advertised on the cover as they deserve the credit of assembly and all that cute stuff. If the book stinks, are you going to condemn Scholastic (Publisher/SoE) books for eternity? I think not, because that is a stupid thing to do, but it is precisely what you are doing.
Had SoE's position changed to be that of the developer I could fully understand this boycott. I myself am not their biggest fan, for the most part I don't like them, but I am forced to play devils advocate at times when understanding is low. There are some subtle differences between publishing an online game and a book, as there should be if you think about it for a moment, but the analogy is completely relevant so don't bother arguing it. And just so you know, it's been long stated and should be obvious that PE is handling the servers and billing, not the Pubilsher.
As for whether or not they are lying, I doubt it. Since that was your second statement I decided I should comment on it. Since it's all being based on this article, it says SoE continues to handle MARKETING and DISTRIBUTION for this title. Is that the same as before? The answer is no. Now, the article could just be not expanding on things, but the relationship with SoE was clearly defined before. If those are the only two things they are now doing, then this has been taken away: PR, MANUFACTURING. So, are they lying? No.
I'll say it again, if the game sucks it is only because of PE.
I will be trying out G&H when it comes out. It is just plain ignorant to say "I will never play this or that game because SOE is involved." but hey, it's your money so spend it any way you want.
To many crap games out there for me to eliminate an entire software house's games.
I think those of you that make such a claim are actually going out and buying their product anyway.

Good post, but I wouldn't even bother.. people are to stuck up and full of it.. they havn't got a clue and never will.. they don't like being wrong.. EVER.. and SOE is the devil ALWAYS in their mind regardless of what happens *shrug* i'm gonna buy it and probably enjoy it.. it promotes small group raids (FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) so I don't need to waste 2-3hrs getting 20+ people together.. then having neither of our abilities really "shine" because there is so fing many of us.. individuallity is destroyed with large raids IMO.

OK... I do understand what a publisher is... unlike most of the people posting in this thread. (ie. the guy that thinks a publisher is whoever runs the servers). I understand that SOE isn't writing the code, but they are still the physical publisher of the media. Their role in the publishing of this game has not changed, only the public wording of the relationship.
Your Harry Potter analogy doesn't really equate to this situation... as my original beef is with the publisher and not the writer. I am not advocating a boycott of this game, or of PE, or even of SOE. I don't like SOE and I prefer not to have to do business with them, but I won't punish myself by missing out on a game simply because they are publishing. Still I do believe any association with SOE is a bad thing. I abhor their attitude toward their customers and they have flat out ruined a game I was playing. I have also seen them buy a couple of games they were "just publishing". The possibility that SOE might one day be at the helm of any game they publish is certainly something I consider to be a valid concern.
I believe that the guys at Perpetual Entertainment are aware of the negativity associated with SOE. I also believe that they are trying to publicly distance themselves from SOE by sybolicly severing the relationship... while not actually changing the relationship in any way. So not only are they willing to do business with a company I find reprehensible, they are willing to do business with a company they don't even feel comfortable having it's name on the box.... the box they printed and shipped to the store. Like I said already... They are willing to sleep with dirty whores, but they wont hold their hand in public.
Sadly I know how G&H is progressing in PEs hands and am probably the only person alive who thinks the game would be helped if SOE took over and PE slowly backed away from the game :>

Those games they was "just publishing" had 2 options. Be bought out or cancel untill further notice. Something is always better then nothing. No matter what. That statement stands true.
You still don't get it do you? SOE had 1 more roll then what they used to be doing added onto their list. PE retracted that role from them and now in PEs hands once again. This lessons the amount of envolvement SOE has in the game. Less SOE = good for people like you and a bunch of ignorant punks that can't suck it up.. a game went bad.. BOO FKING WHOOO! Get over it already.. IT'S A GAME! Do you cry everytime a movie sucks after you spend that whoppying 6 bucks? Move on to a new game already.. you are condeming a company on a few mistakes. Why do they have mistakes more then these other companies? BECAUSE THEY ARE 2-3 TIMES LARGER AND HAVE "MUCH" MORE LARGE AMOUNT OF GAMES. Thus that spins off to having more mistakes.. that's just a standard part of life as a matter of fact.
People can never be happy it seams.. you whine buckets cry "NO SOE!" and they lesson their relationship with SOE.. your still not happy.. no one can please you.. even if there WASN'T SOE.. people with that attitude will bitch about an entirely other issue.. I say screw you guys and PE do wtfever they want/need to do to push their product out the door effectively... whiney brats arn't an important part of a community.. frankly I don't want to be in the game with them, but hell I put up with it, because I look past it and enjoy the dang game..

I might agree, but I don't know their progress. From what I hear.. no crafting.. no alternative pvp (duels/arenas/etc).. among other things will be available on launch... which is just sad.. I will reserve judgement untill i've tried it though. I can afford to sink 50 bucks to testplay.. but many can't (if you can't why you playing games anyway? get a second job ya bum or stop spending all yer damn money.) so I guess we'll have to see.
Personally i'm looking forward to Hellgate more then anything.

6 bucks for a movie? You must live in AZ. I haven't been to a movie that cheap in at least 10 years
Definitely an odd set of circumstances. Just a week or two ago, this game was being touted at the Fan Faire. It was the second one highlighted in Smed's (awful) speech. And NOW they're adjusting the relationship?!? Can't help but think somethings up. Did PE get nervous about SOE's rep? Did they get upset about the relationship with Flying Lab and PotBS? Did SOE act differently after seeing a not so great product?
The timing of this (in relation to the Fan Faire) just seems odd.
Oh well....was never planning to play it anyway.
(*added note: When Flying Lab and SOE signed their publishing agreement, didn't they use the relationship with PE as an example of how it would work? Seems like a bad example now, no?)
You still don't get it do you? SOE had 1 more roll then what they used to be doing added onto their list. PE retracted that role from them and now in PEs hands once again. "SOE Senior Brand Manager Debysue Wolfcale characterized the move as clarification of the actual roles each company play in the development of the game. SOE continues to handle marketing and retail distribution for the title, the same roles they held before this move."
Which is it... Less SOE involvement, as you claim... or the exact same SOE involvement, as noted in the original article?
I thought this might help the overall discussion. In 2006, this is how PE classified their newly signed, relationship with SOE:
"This means that we handle everything internally, from hosting the game servers, to account services/billing, to technical support, and working with the community. This means that Platform Publishing will be handling retail marketing, PR, manufacturing, and our North American distribution. "
Again, that was Feb. '06, when PE announced they would "co-publish" GnH with SOE. Feel free to compare with the new statement released today.
(for those that are unsure, Platform Publishing/SOE)
Since I am so unaware, Who is responsible for owning/contracting, maintaining and managing the servers for an MMO? In this case PE does not have the resources to pay for great amount of server rental where SOE can. SOE has the Marketing department and Publishing capability to assist a new MMO. PE is the developers with the "good Idea". Does PE expect low interst to were they can afford the server space on their own?
What is exactly SOE's role with PE based on this announcement?

To err is human....to play is divine

EDIT: For further reference you may go to this post, which is old, explaining their old relationship. Yeah, I don't make this stuff up! http://community.godsandheroes.com/jive/ann.jspa?annID=19

OK Salvatoris,
Since I am so unaware, Who is responsible for owning/contracting, maintaining and managing the servers for an MMO? In this case PE does not have the resources to pay for great amount of server rental where SOE can. SOE has the Marketing department and Publishing capability to assist a new MMO. PE is the developers with the "good Idea". Does PE expect low interst to were they can afford the server space on their own?
What is exactly SOE's role with PE based on this announcement?
Thank you Bountytaker for underscoring my point.
