The hardest question of my life...

MadAceMadAce Member Posts: 2,461

... well not really. Put so far it has been the one where I put the most time in. More than what the meaning of life is and shit like that.

At least a full 4 hours.

This issue has forced me to ask myself the most profound and deepest existential questions I ever had to ask myself.

In short, I have the opportunity to get a tattoo for a really low price. So far I have turned down every offer I ever had for a tattoo since I don't like being repeatedly pierced with a needle by someone who has been on a speed trip without sleep for the past 6 days an needs a break every 10 minutes to get a needle in his own body to counter the speed so he will at least stop shaking after which he proceeds with taking apart another TV. I also like to keep the chance to contract AIDS and similars to a bare minimum. Call me a snob if you must.

But THIS time it would actually be done by someone who I didn't know previously (which would make it a very responsible person) and with a fine discount so I only have to pay for the thin layer of leather I would wear on the chair I'd occupy.

Problem is that I frankly have no idea what to get as a tattoo. It's something I've always wanted and always found to be really "wow" contrary to some who only find it "kinda cool".

I'm really at a loss and someone suggested I'd ask people who don't know me. So here I am, at the forum I visit the least, with the third largest concentration of nutcases I know of.

It's my first one so it'd have to be smallish (also for medical reasons since I have strange/cool/wtfish reactions to just about everything).

But the requirements I have set for the design are anything BUT smallish. Since I'll probably never be able to pay for a removal and'll have to keep it for all the years that I will continue to roam the earth. And with my luck I'll probably live forever if I have a crappy tattoo.

It should....

Entangle my entire personality. Well, all of them. I'm not only a nerd who watches star trek and reads Asimov. Whether I want to or not, there's more to me. So no aliens or shit like that.

Don't be a meaningless fashion statement. Screw tribal.

Have an as universal significance as possible. Preferably something aliens (yea, I said no aliens  but screw that) would understand. So preferably no cultural references. And something not in a language nobody speaks.

Sigh. That's not all of the requirements but still...

Ideas so far:

(stylized) Drawing of a cockroach. Can't find a good drawing tho.

Altered ouroboros.

Schematic of our solar system. Too nerdy.

Frog (don't ask). Not nerdy enough.

Binary number depicting something really witty and smart () but I can't decide on a number. (some universal biological constante should do)

Web of Wyrd. Too... un-universal. But the meaning is nice.

And seems all cool symbols have been taken by some wacko religion. I'm not religious.

Sigh. Don't really know what I'm asking for. Some ideas, a way to disect my brain and find something that's equally compatible with all my parts, a design, ... Or some questions I can ask that would deliver answers that would sum me up.

If I can't get a good idea I'll just abandon the idea altogether.

Thanks in advance for your input.

you should get a full sized tattoo of that cat on your avatar

I would highly recommend picking something yourself rather than having us pick something for you. A tattoo should be alot more personal than most people take it, as it's something you have to wear for the rest of your life etc. Pick something that really means alot to you, something that signifies who you are and so on. You seems to have a good idea of this already though.

Now that I've said my word of caution....

As for numbers, well there's obviously Pi, or perhaps Avogadro's number, etc. If you want it to be slightly less obvious than just the number, you could (as you suggested) put it in Binary, or perhaps Binary Coded Decimal.

That cat in your avatar is pretty neat too as the other guy suggested.

    The Cat:

It's cool and it's easy to put in drawing.

But it would have to be too large for one. And secondly it's a cultural reference. Thirdly I never played anything but the demo of the game where it originated from.

But yea, it kinda fits me.

    Numbers:

I've considered all those numbers. I'm actually looking for a certain number... A long time ago I heard of a number that signifies the proportions in the human body. Certain distances between parts of the human body have that same proportion over and over. Can't find it tho.

But that still is kinda nerdy.

    Personal:

The reason why I do so much effort is because I want it to be personal and original. So I don't want anyone to pick one for me of course.

And I'm really chizo so it's hard to find something that fits my personality.

So far the cockroach really is me.

    Yup, that be me.

I consider them the pinnacle of evolution. They don't need a brain to survive (for a while), neither do I. And there's a lot more private connections. Almost the only difference between them and me is that they're social and like to have kids.

But I can't find an acceptable drawing. Really annoying.

And the Cat is from American McGee's Alice. It's based on the Cheshire cat. Which would be a cool, but unoriginal character for a tattoo.

It's called the golden ratio, found in all places in nature, and used everywhere in architecture. I don't remember the number itself though, just it's importance. I'm sure you can find it if it suits you.

That black cockroach would look really nice as a tattoo, and I've never seen a tat of a roach, so you'd be your own unique self.

Hey! I'm currently in the process of designing my own tattoo, so I kinda feel your pain for the search for the right image (I'm currently toutching up and finishing mine). Are you looking for something realistic, or more tribal/ stylized?

EDIT: oop, read the first post over again. answered my own question

  • vampiress92vampiress92 Member Posts: 266

I did that one a few minutes ago. Some quick sketching, and inked it. No scanner, so please excuse the digital camera picture.

Tell me if you like it. I wanna know if its ok or if it sucks

A tattoo is too personal of a choice for me to recommend anything.

I'd get "f#a#(oo)" tattooed on my back right shoulder if I got one.

Well, The tattoo I'm getting is a lightly altered form of this image:

I'm going to end up dedicating it to my mother.

The artist is allowing me to use her design with permission. Her name is CrystaChick, and the image this is edited from is named "Evil_Kitties_Version_1"

Now, I think I've made all the information needed clear :)

How about a life size tattoo of Goatse done on your butt?

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

A tattoo is something very personal.  So it should be between you and the tattoo.  If you don't find something that strikes you ...don't get it.  Also understand that just because someone offers you a discount, doesn't mean you should settle with them.. as you have already said before...there are a lot of issues that could prevail itself to you.  If you do find a place that you are comfortable with in having your tattoo done at, then figure out what you what tattooed.  Be aware that a tattoo is permantent, it does not change.  By having an artist portray his/her artwork on you, it should be an honor, not a burden!

The first one in black looks very nice. I was contemplating about that one. But since it's on the net it's not original anymore. Also too "full".

The second drawinh is nice too but harder to tattoo, certainly in black and white.

    The Golden Ratio.

Thanks heaps. And there's a lot of ways to express it. Still too nerdy tho.

That one looks really bloody awesome. The cool thing about it is that it DOESN'T LOOK LIKE A SCARAB! Praise the lord.

One thing tho. Most roach species have very pronounced/long antenna.

Their heind legs are also quite long.

    A bit like this:

But I love the roach body you drew.

That one's really cool. I like the kitten.

I thought about that. But there's nothing that corresponds with my political views.

No, there's no unified technocratic sign. (wouldn't encompass me completely anyways)

If you don't know what image to get stuck on you for the rest of your life, I would suggest getting nothing it all.

That's the plan if I don't find anything, of course.

    Yay

Sorry I couldn't edit it much further. The picture looks a lot cleaner in my sketchbook. That image was pretty fun to make, so yeah. I think I might start playing with tattoo designs, soon.

Uhmm, okay. How about "LOVE" and "HATE" tattooed on your knuckles? That's always been a sure fire winner with employers and women. Or how about the ever popular, yet subdued and simple set of jail bars on your forearm?

I say if you want to make a statement, then do it right.
