Vaj, the new zone is a lot of fun. I can grab my 35+ villain and group up with my friends who are playing heroes and vice versa. Different group dynamics with heroes and villians working together.

As for the new powers and such? Don't know where you read that. Villians in an uproar? nope, don't see em protest.

The warzone is a level 35-50 zone

As for the Q2 info from NCsoft. That's been posted on MMORPG's front page new and Q2 2007 is up in membership for CoH.

    Edit: here's the Q2 2007 report

your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

Since I have a 50 villain I can safely say I'm not upset that I have to wait longer for my villainous epic AT.  The new War Zone is quite fun and with Issue 9's inventions I am still working on character development.  Would I like my epic AT?  Sure, of course I would.  I have said before though that I would rather they take their time than release a half-a**ed "evil peacebringer" and call it my "epic" AT.  As for an "uproar", nope not seeing it at all.  With Issue 10 I been running around to invading zones, working on War Zone raids and storyarcs.  Far too busy to be "bored" yet.

Earlier someone posted about same ol' graphics and such.  This tells me they have not played the game in probably 2 years or so.  They added outdoor instanced missions a long time ago, physics engine and improved quality/performance of power graphics, to name a few.  Sonic powers, arrow powers, electric melee and thugs MM have also been added as new powersets.  With Issue 8 they totally revamped the dead zone of Faultline and gave heroes safeguard missions.  For those with money to burn they added support for the physics card for even more realistic physics ingame.

Oh and as for a FFA pvp zone, that's Warburg.  Which each pvp zone they are trying to do something different, so that each just isn't a higher level version with a different map.  That being said SC and RV seem to still be the most popular from what I've seen.

As its been stated a few times already on this thread, CoX isnt in danger or is dying. The NCSoft report is clearly stating that subs are up. And that comment that compares CoX fans to Raider fans is ridiculous. Fans of anything are of COURSE going to come to the defense of their beloved team, game, whatever!  Oh, and by the way, GO RAIDERS!

The only thing that I can see really cutting into CoX sub numbers is when Marvel Universe Online is released. I think most players will see it as the spiritual successor to CoX and jump ship. Depending on the look and feel of MUO, I may be one of those people.

True enough. But made for console? Odds are against it pulling me too much.

Its best to keep a wait and see approach on MUO before you write it off just yet....

Both the Marvel and DC games are years away so I wouldn't worry right now about them affecting CoX in the least.

Just had to point out that Sanctus's guesstimate of 30 WoW servers is way off. http://worldofwarcraft.com/realmstatus/

Count to 30 and you're barely out of the A's.

Having said that, I hate WoW, just thought the numbers were interesting, especially when compared to CoH. I played CoH on release and man, it was the most fun I've ever had playing a game. That is, until around level 10, when I realized there was no depth. You just did the same door missions over and over again, just with different looking enemies, or sometimes not even that, they'd just get tougher. Tried City of Villains when it came out, but it still didn't appeal to me.

Still, to this day I believe CoH has the best character creation system of any game, and I think more games should follow suit.

EDIT: I also realize that I stated the game had no depth but only played to level 10. I don't think you should have to play a game for 50 levels before there's a variety in what you can do. The whole "the good stuff is at the end" approach is retarded to me. Yeah, the whole goal is to make it to endgame to get the maxed out experience, but you shouldn't have to be bored to tears for 50 levels to do that. CoH to me, was exactly that. Just some clarification of opinion.

Randem, your right, I pulled that number from out of the air. I just remember it's a lot more then CoX

The game I suppose is doing fine, but I left and decided to stay away when Cryptic sponsored and publicized their big Gay and Lesbian Prom.

Gays and lesbians are free to live there lives, but I choose not to subject myself to Cryptic's promotion of the Gay/Lesbian activists political and social agenda.

I agree that political and social agendas should be kept at a minimum within the gaming world, but I don't feel that something that is an individual's personal lifestyle choice is in any way stepping on my toes. People get "married" ingame, and I don't see that as any more or less detrimental than gay and lesbian players having a "prom" in game. It's a harmless social activity that's apolitical and not pushing anyone's agenda on anyone else.

Just to clarify -- they did not sponsor and publicize it.  There was ahuge hoopla on the boards about this.  Apparently this prom took place and then a month after the fact some magazine wrote an article about.  Naturally as it was information about CoX, they put it on their website and everyone else picked it up.  Repeat: Cryptic and ncSoft didn't sponsor anything, it was entirely player driven.

depends on the population, if its making money then ..no

But when Marvel comes out, im gonna jump ship, as im sure most of the current subsribers will!

I think NCsofts is doing the Marvel game anyway! So maybe thats there master plan; keep CoH/V going till Marvel, let Marvel take all CoH/V subs, and shut CoH down :-(

I think it's a bit hasty to begin pronouncing CoX dead at the launch of MUO.  Shocking as it may sound, but more than 1, even more than 2 superhero mmo's could exist at the same time.....if it weren't possible to diversify the offering then you have to explain, how the heck are all of these fantasy mmo's surviving.  Furthermore, considering NCsoft is progressing towards a station-pass type model, I can see CoX potentially living on life support for a good while.  Potentially.

But, we're talking a few years from now -- let's enjoy CoH/V (assuming you do) and worry about MUO when it finally gets here. ( ' :

Publicity is publicity, sought out or not. The Rainbow Prom was more than rants on a form. It was a news item used by gay activist to further their agenda.

The City of Heroes / Villains official site has been updated with a look at a recent event held in in-game called the Rainbow Prom. The event was held for the prominent gay and lesbian community in the City of Heroes / Villains games and was featured on Gay.com.

Hundreds of super-powered lesbians and gays let their magical hair down at a new LGBT prom recently. They danced, flirted, elected a prom king and (drag) queen, played outdoors in their underwear at a mountain ski resort, and levitated with robotic boots and angels' wings until they crashed the server. Yes, they were in a virtual online world called "City of Heroes."

Queer gamers have been making strides toward virtual equality for a while now. They've won the right to marry in "The Sims," "Fable" and "Fallout 2." A gay pirate named Bertram romances male avatars (game characters) in "The Temple of Elemental Evil." "World of Warcraft" nearly shut down an LGBT guild (players' group) in 2006, but ultimately backed off and apologized. Makers of the new online "Lord of the Rings," on the other hand, have scrapped the option of marriage altogether -- for straight as well as gay hobbits -- rather than face the issue of same-sex nuptials, not to mention interspecies wizard-elf unions.

"City of Heroes"' Rainbow Prom may have been the first virtual LGBT prom ever. Gamers were invited to finally enjoy the high school dance many missed when they were 18. At least 200 'toons showed up, organizers reported, and partied so hard they actually forced NCsoft to reboot the computer generating their virtual world -- several times.

People are migrating over to 2 servers (Virtue and Freedom) since their servers are indeed dying.. So why most of you might think that this game is alive and kicking, understand that that is because everyone is going to the same 2 servers...

Try starting a toon on one of the other less populated server and have fun trying to find groups constantly. We won't even talk about pvp on those servers, which im sure most of you carebears couldn't be happier about.

Yes that is correct the event was completely player driven.  Basically NCSoft didn't freak out like Blizzard did.  For those that don't know in WoW someone tried to make a gay/lesbian only guild, for people with a common lifestyle to play together.  Blizzard at first tried to ban the guild.  They later backed off when pressured from subscribers and gay/lesbian organizations outside the game.

I never know if the teammates I'm playing with are straight or gay.  Quite frankly, I don't care either.  None of my business and who you do (or don't) sleep with has no effect on how you play your character.  I've played many MMOG's and I have seen religious, ethnic and geographical based guilds.  They had no effect at all how I played or enjoyed the game.

As far as server populations they are fine, with a couple servers higher than average (Freedom for one).  I play on Infinity and never have had trouble finding a team when I want one regardless if I play a low or high hero or villain.  Plus for the pvp types, Sirens Call and RV are still pretty regularly played.   Warburg is a ghost town though, oh well.

  • WiccanCircleWiccanCircle Member Posts: 336

DrowNoble is exactly correct.  This is a game and as such sex and sexual orientation of ANY type shouldn't be involved in the game.  (If you get your jollies by doing sex on the internet you need tons of help and should delete your characters and save that time for therapy.

What anyone does in the real world has no impact on this silly game.  Cyptic/NCsoft whatever they are can do nothing about what people do outside of tradmark/copy right laws.

Anyhow, back to the real topic... I did go to four other servers just to see.  Pinnacle, Champion, Guardian and one other.  This was at prime time last evening and I made a PeaceBringer (So I could fly without dying in the streets) and flew around to the major city areas.  Talos, IP Atlas, Kings Row... et al.  They were Ghost towns.  dry crackling tumble weeds blowing down the streets.

I suggest people try this and see for themselves.  By the way, did anyone else notice that the servers now scroll down to the bottom when you leave them?  Perhaps that is to spread out the population more.

The reason this game is dying and so many people have left the game is simple. It is too short and once you reach the level cap, which is done in maybe 2-3 months of casual playing, then what do you do? There is no end game content in this game. Loot is almost worthless so you cant have the raid content like you have in WoW and fighting over bases seems so pointless that almost noone bothers with it, same goes for the PvP zones.

It feels like this game caters to casual players and only to casual player but when even a casual player can hit the cap in 3 months and then there is nothing to do then people will leave.

They need to raise the level cap significantly, give us real super powers connected to loot and introduce some new high level zones.  Maybe one other planets, space stations whatever. Also the PvP needs to have a point, bases should mean more and destroying one should give you significant rewards.

As for the merging of servers, do you think WoW is dying because they merge servers? Course wow has about 30 or so servers, I think the populations on those serves is about a grand each. CoH doesn't have that many, but I've not heard them saying they are removing a server or merging with another.
Unless your refering to less people playing? Q2 2007 shows an increase in sales from up to I9. I think CoX is at the point where it's not going to rise to the heights of  WoW, but I see it will have it's ups and downs around this marker.

WoW has expanded servers three times since I've been playing and the load per server is a myriad more than a thousand.
