Wasn't this the same list that ranked Joan Jett higher than Eddie Van Halen? The entire list was an abomination. I'll have to find it.
Edit: Joan Jett ranks higher than Angus Young. And Ike Turner ranks higher than Randy Rhoads. I didn't even know Ike Turner played guitar, I thought he just beat the crap out of Tina for a living.....
You guys have missed out the greatest American rock band to ever put plectrum to string,
TENACIOUS D!

You gotta' be kidding me. Kurt Cobain shouldn't even be ON this list, much less right behind a shred-god like Kirk Hammett.
Also, Jimi Hendrix is overrated as hell. Where's Rusty Cooley?
I doubt you will find Kirk Hammett in any College Music History Class text books. But you will find Kurt Cobain there. He started a whole genre of music.
Currently playing: LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)
Looking Foward too: Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

Starting a genre of music does not make you a good guitar player. While I do love Nirvana's music, to put him as one of the best guitarists of all time is a little absurd.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.

I dont know about history class but you will find Nirvana played about 6 times an hour on many of the radio stations here in the Washington, D.C. area. They seem to be obsessed with Nirvana, Green Day, Pearl Jam, and U2...
Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL!

Yeah I live in the Washington D.C. area and your absolutely right.
I agree, Kurt Cobain shouldnt be on the list, he wasnt the Only one to create the genre and in my opinion i dislike most of Nirvanas music. Only reason why he gets so much attention was because he killed himself, makes me like him less.

Either you are really young and don't actually remember or you are ignorant.
THe reason he killed himself is because he became so famous. Not that he became famous because he killed himself. He was huge before he killed himself and whether he had or not he would still be taught in Music history class because he did start a whole new genre.

He did not start the grunge genre all by himself. If it weren't for bands like Alice in Chains (superior lyric writing ability btw, and he is also dead now) and Pearl Jam, the grunge genre would not ever have gotten off of the ground. One man does not create a whole genre of music. Anyway, nobody here knows why he killed himself for sure, hell, I could sit here and say Courtney Love murdered him with his own guitar pick, it wouldn't make him any better of a guitarist, or any more deserving of having his name on that list.

Stop giving credit for creating a whole genre to one person. And he was suicidal and was a drug addict who OD many times. Sorry i didn't know that YOU know why he killed himself and the rest of the world doesen't lol. maybe you should go down to the Seattle police dept. and tell them everything about a case that they never really solved.

I kind of agree with that but he is the main one who created grunge
And actually to calrify Grunge is really a Sub-genre of Alt rock so it's not really a Whole genre. And Nirvana was actually only the mainstream success for Grunge so people associate the birth of Grunge music from them, but in reality look at bands like Soundgarden, the melvins. green River etc.

Well ok they weren't the first ones to do grunge but imo they were the best at it
I base the opinion that he shouldn't be on the list on the fact that his technical skill as a guitarist was never at any point anywhere near some of those other names. It's a list of "best guitarists," not "best industry influencers."
Kurt may have done a lot of things when he was alive, but even a mediocre guitarist like myself could have wiped the floor with him in a show of technical guitar playing skill.
Either way, Nirvana was a good band; Dave Grohl more than made up for the lack of talent any other members of the band may have had. Sad that Foo Fighters nowadays has been reduced to what I can only positively identify as Country.

Bleach was such a good album, definitely in my top 3 for vocals, and lyrics that are deep. Nirvana.
