There may be a filter.. there may not.. but if there is there will likely be an option to disable it.
That doesn't mean you can call people what you wish and do as you please - you'll get banned either way for something extremely abusive. But if you mean 'bad' as in casually swearing because something went wrong - no one's going to get banned for that. At least I hope not
"If all you can say is... "It's awful, it's not innovative, it's ugly, it's blah.." Then you're an unimaginative and unpolished excuse for human life" -eburn
The OP sounds like a AoC fanboi - just look at his last line 'Can't wait for AoC'. There should be a profanity filter. While swearing does not bother me at all it does bother some people.
Why WOULDN'T there be a profanity filter? Adding it, does 0 damage, and War is trying to appeal to the masses not just a mature audience. You can always turn it off. I do however totaly disagree with any type of negative reaction to profanity, because if you don't like it, FILTER it. I want to be able to say Ass,
If there is a profanity filter make sure you spell your swear words right. That way if a GM comes after you, can say "Hey I spelled them right so if that person didn't want to see it they should have used the filter". If you say fuk or Sh!t etc then that is bypassing the filter and you can get nailed. Spelling things correctly has save my friend multiple times in WoW. Another thing they look for is swearing AT people versus just swearing. Example being "You're a fucking idiot" will get you in trouble but saying "Fuck that was stupid" will not.
As for reasons to swear? Sorry but things like "holy cow!" and "Dang!" don't stand up as a comparison to "holy shit!" and "Damn it all to hell!" very well.
is there going to be a profanity filter, if i say something bad is someone going to be able to report me to where i get banned..?
"Saying something bad" is not just about vulgar language.
Verbal harassment and abuse actually covers a rather broad range language any part of which -- if you do not understand what is "good" behavior and what is "bad" behavior -- can be further explained to you by reading the End User License Agreement which is generally enforced in-game by the GMs.
Whether or not there is a profanity filter, someone may report you for bad language or harassment and the GMs will take such action as they deem fit, such as suspension or banning.
And, since your nick is xc0nan13x, I might suggest to you that even in Age of Conan (with an "M" rating") that the "M" rating applies to the game not to player behavior.
The chances of you getting reported and disciplined in either Warhammer Online or Age of Conan for "bad behavior" of one form or another would be equally high.
Why WOULDN'T there be a profanity filter? Adding it, does 0 damage, and War is trying to appeal to the masses not just a mature audience. You can always turn it off. I do however totaly disagree with any type of negative reaction to profanity, because if you don't like it, FILTER it. I want to be able to say Ass,
so if it was only targeted to a mature audience you're saying that they wouldn't mind having people say ass and fuck for every other word when they speak?
I just hope they never have voice comms in WAR... I can control my language when typing, but in the heat of the battle when on ventrilo I tend to swear a lot and most of the time I don't even realise - that's something that can't be filtered out!
Of course there will be a fucking profanity filter. If some tosser reports you for bloody swearing, then you can tell em to 'Turn the fucking thing on!'
. . . ahem
I would be very suprised to hear people getting banned or even told off for swearing. Profanity filters are pretty much the norm in MMO's so that if people don't like it, they can get rid of it.
Personally I'm not a big fan of swearing, and always have mine turned on. I'd love to see a profanty filter that not only replaces words with Stars ( ***), but replaces words like "f*ck" with "fiddlesticks". That'd be brilliant.
DAoC's Rules of Conduct only covers obscenity and vulgarity directed towards someone, and is only subject to punishment if you can show proof that you've taken measures to avoid the offender.
It's unknown if they will be using the same rules in WAR, but as far as random cursing goes like "oh shit" or whatever, its not a reportable offense in DAOC under Mythics ruling and they make it quite clear that if you do not like profanity then to use the filter.
Harassment Policy
=================
In Dark Age of Camelot, our goal is to build a strong community that offers a comfortable atmosphere for all of our players. This means seeing that players have the ability to combat antisocial behavior.
Some tools created to achieve this purpose include the "Ignore Player" option and the obscenity filter. The "Ignore Player" (/Ignore) option permanently blocks all of an offending player's comments, and you can also choose to block certain offensive words through the DAoC Obscenity Filter.
What is NOT harassment?
First we should point out that anything considered a valid play style in DAoC is not considered harassment. In other words, player killing of your realm's enemies, including gravestone camping, is not considered harassment. By valid, we mean that there are game mechanics created around these play styles in DAoC. Because DAoC is a RvR (PvP) game, players should seek ways of protecting themselves against these play styles through game mechanics rather than calling on customer support staff for help in these cases.
What IS considered harassment?
Harassment consists of flagrant misuse and abuse of game mechanics with the intention of distressing and offending other players. So what's a game mechanic? Game mechanics allow players to interact with the world and each other. For example, the ability to block a doorway is a game mechanic. The ability to create macros with large amounts of text is a game mechanic. Use of game mechanics like these is by no means considered harassment in and of itself. The key to determining whether the mechanic is being misused or abused is to determine "intent". What was the person trying to achieve through their actions? Were they purposefully trying to disrupt someone else's game? While an action may cause others distress, it is not considered harassment until it is determined by DAoC CS Staff that it was done to intentionally cause distress or to offend other players.
Also considered as harassment is any behavior that is incessant, inescapable, derogatory and directed specifically at you or your group. An important point to note regarding this type of harassment is that a genuine attempt to alleviate the situation must have been made. This could be an attempt to leave the area or the offending player, or simply the act of asking them politely to stop. If a sincere attempt has been made to solve the problem and the offending player persists in the harassing behavior, it can be considered harassment, and should be reported. For more information, see ?How do I report harassment?? below.
Behavior that is always considered harassment includes derogatory and/or hateful comments that are sexual, racist, religious, or related to gender or creed. Mythic Entertainment has a zero tolerance policy towards harassment of this kind, as stated in our Terms of Service, and violation of the above can result in immediate and permanent account suspension on the first offense.
So what happens when I report harassment?
1. When harassment is reported it is immediately escalated to a server lead or higher, and investigated as quickly as possible.
2. We will observe the reported harassing behavior, and determine whether the harassment report is valid.
3. If the harassment is valid, we will take appropriate disciplinary action against the policy violator.
4. Valid harassment issues are always handled at a server lead level or higher.
What are the penalties for harassment?
Mythic Entertainment condemns all forms of harassment in DAoC, and this type of disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Harassment is a severe offense in DAoC and a clear violation of the Rules of Conduct and Terms of Service. A judgment of valid harassment can result in penalties placed on the harassing party up to and including immediate account closure, based on the severity of harassment and the player's past account history.
How do I report harassment?
Please report harassment using the /Appeal function. In the future we will have a tool for reporting harassing behavior that will include logging of chat messages, which will better enable us to track harassment problems.
You know what really "grinds my gears"? (Family guy reference there...)
Games with profanity filters enabled...yet when you swear you get the banstick. I've had it in TWO games now. LotrO and WoW.
Both games I disabled my profanity filter cause I can deal with it. I would swear about something or at someone (granted I shouldn't do it at someone) but then they would report me for swearing. And the GM in WoW banned me for 3 days for swearing even though I argued the point that..."If this guy doesn't like swearing he should turn his filter back on. If he had it on he wouldn't have been able to see what I was saying, and if he has it off then that's his own fault." In LotrO I just got a slap on the wrist cause I was a closed beta tester at the time...
All in all, I'd like to see more SMART GM's governing game's then the ones who just follow rules without actually thinking about them.
~~Internet gaming is not for the faint of heart or the dumb of mind.~~
Most MMORPGs that have a T rating have profanity filters, but often they can be shut off by the end user/player. By filter, I mean a text monitoring function that replaces what the function considers 'profanity' with *s or whatever. I don't think I've heard of games where people were banned for swearing, although reading the rest of the post, I suppose trying to bypass it might cause that. <shrug> If they didn't have that filter, the ESRB would probably demand it get a M or AO or something.

Not to start an argument, but in my opinion, if you swear directly at someone, regardless of whether or not the game has a profanity filter, you should be prepared for the consequences. If you say to someone for example "What are you doing you &$%#ing retard" , its not exactly hard to fill in the blanks. And it is no less of a personal attack simply because the word is obscured.
In my opinion filters are kind of stupid anyway, since 90% of the time you can tell by context the exact word that is being used anyway. But maybe some people just dont like to see the words on their screen i guess.
Honestly, if that's the case and indeed you are right. Context can be used to discern the word in question being used even if it was masked...but honestly, If you can't deal with a little cussing you shouldn't be playing the game. That's just my opinion. If your under 13 years old chances are you stole your parents credit card to play the game in which case you shouldn't be playing anyways and if your over 13 you have heard these words by then and they shouldn't offend you. I have met 13 year olds that offend and curse at me more then anyone I know in real life (Age 23 FYI) and yet I don't let them bother me. The minute they say something outrageously offensive I just add them to my mute list and my problem is solved. If they decide to harass me further by following me, attempting to steal mobs and/or PK me then I report them (if applicable). Internet gaming is not for the faint of heart or the dumb of mind. Either prepare to deal with offensive language and either choose to deal with/ignore it or for lack of a better term "GTFO!!".

OK, this quote is outstanding.... you should add it to your tagline.
I agree, if a game has a profanity filter, no one should be banned for swearing in-game..... leave the filter on. Let's hope AOC with its "M" rating follows a rational policy like this.
That said... I agree, directing your profanity at someone as in , "you're a f-ing idiot" is unnecessary and deserves a warning/ban if it is not reigned in.

I totally understand that. I actually will swear while playing, but I try to never TYPE what I am saying privately in my home.
On the other hand, even though I use a press-to-talk key, it is entirely possible that I will become "excited" during PvP and express myself is very colorful @#$%&!! language!
Hahahaha It sounds like a lot of people got reprimands and bans for swearing in WoW. Really, I hope the filter is included but I can always tell by context what people are saying, so it doesn't help that much. I turn it off to make sure that the %^$& is actually no more than that, like a joke which is fine, and to know what is being said to me if I am being cussed out by some random guy.
I don't like swearing in general, theres no solid reason for it besides lack of vocabulary, especially in a game where you have to actually type it out. Its not like you hit your arm and the keyboard types your thoughts out for you.
Seeing the swear words or the ***%$#^&* that takes their place detracts from the game in my opinion, like an eye-sore. The people who swear, do it a lot in my experience.

I like the option of a profanity filter for two reasons . . . the most obvious being that I might allow my daughter to play this game. While I monitor her game-playing practically 100%, it's still nice to know that there is something else helping me out.
Secondly, since we can't talk across factions, there's really no reason to curse. I mean, what's the fun of cursing at your own side? lol
Still, I am often amazed at the mentality and lack of overall maturity of gamers. It's one thing to poke fun at something, trash talk, or just be sarcastic to a situation. But sometimes I just shake my head at how things work. For example, we have a shoutbox on our site, and after a couple of weeks I saw the need for a profanity filter. Simply put, the language there was embarrassing, and it was too much to expect our moderators to control. So, I added a profanity filter.
Within minutes I literally got dozens of pm's and e-mails from our members complaining that they couldn't curse any more in our shoutbox. While I did not say it at the time, I was totally amazed at how important using vulgarity is to some people. You'd swear I was depriving them of oxygen.
