I have been playing EVE for about a month now. When I log on the number is between 25000-35000 people online. Is this IP addresses or accounts. Because if its accounts then the EVE population isn't as high as I thought. The majority of people I have met in game, have 2 to 3 accounts. I was surprised to hear from my Corp leader, that to get the most out the game. Two accounts would help me out a lot.
So this means that the real population of the game is around 10k to 20k people versus 35000. Right? Thats really a small chunk of MMO'ers.
This is in no way a bash on the game, but I'm curious if EVE isn't just becoming a large afkfest with people having multiple accounts.

I'd personally wager that 1/3 of the concurrent users logged in is multiple accounts, 2/3 of that number I'd guess are real subscribers and not Alt accounts.
They have 200k subscribers, which isnt bad by no means imo.

true. I just couldn't believe the amount of them that did. There would be 20 people on in corp chat and 8 of them were there alts lol.
One thing that really contributes to this is the way you can buy game time with ISK. 190 mil / month to have a miner/hauler/trader alt to salvage and loot wrecks while you are mission running may make sense. Also think of a solo miner, they can make a lot more ISK if they have an alt hauling their ore back to station while they keep mining. The difference may justify spending 190 mil in game money for that privilege. And did eve mon just tell me the server is offline? Its like 06:00 eve time. . .
When I used to play this game and back in 2004 we did not have miningbarges and shit like that so two accounts where helpful too.
I used to do some mining with my "main" character and hauling with my second account, that worked great and I never where hit by for example ore thiefs, back in the days people did not get flagged for stealing the ore so you really had no way to fight them without being concorddokken...
Also later when both my accounts got better skilled I used two accounts for missionrunning, could for example fly in with one tank and come in with one damagedealer or later when the wrecks came in, I had one specialized lootship and one missionrunner so while doing the missions I also came in and looted and did the wrecks.
Also within industry I used two accounts, my hauling account (second account) could fly a Freighter and so while I where moving stuff around with it I could be running missions or buy ore/minerals or smuggle it back out from low sec to places where it was safe to fly with the freighter.
So yeah a second account is useful in many ways, also both my accounts where not in the same corp so while my main was at war I could safly fly around stuff for the corp with my freighter....
That number only tells how many accounts that are paid for.
actualy only 2 people play eve online and all the other 500k accounts belong to them. They roleplay 500k different chars in game.

You honestly believe most people have two or even more accounts?Heh, you're wrong. The amount of people using more than 1 account is indeed higher than in other MMOs tho. Kinda one of the bad sides of the game.
Are you saying this is unique to EVE? Is it possible that all MMOG's are skewed this way? Either way excellent point.

Well, its been my experience that most players I've met have 2 accounts, and some have 3 and 4. Normally folks run no more than 2 accounts at a time, so when you see 30k online I'd say there's most likely about 20k actual players. (just a guess on my part of course)
That said, its a big universe, and it certainly doesn't want for players to communicate with.

I only have one account as i dont need anymore as im in a good active corp. So if i mined i could get someone to haul for me in return for a share of the profits, it works out jst fine for me.

When I played...I used Three Account's... at the same time on ... two computer's.
ALT accounts are for cheats to be honest and sad people who have nothing better to do than play the game all the time.
Boxing is definitely not a new thing. A LOT of people had multiple accounts back in EQ1, but it wasn't well known. There was a guy on Zek named Goochious who had a group of 6 or 7 that he would XP in and they were ALL his characters that he would play at the same time.
We were known to run old-school raids with 3 people each playing two characters, and one person playing 3. We had the means to do it, so we did. All level 70s, some with their 2.0s, the others geared like crazy. We could, so we did, and it was pretty intense too. Switch over to one, heal, switch back, cast another spell on the other char, switch back to the cleric and start another heal, etc..
I see people doing this in EVE, but I would say most of the people who have multiple accounts probably only have two at most. There is almost no point in having another. You can have your main, and then a mining alt and that's really all you need due to the way skills are set up.
You are forgetting to add in the number of isk farmers that are online 24/7 (-1 hr a day). And then the number of isk farmer alts that are on just to spam their websites via evemail.
Seriously though, i'm not some EVE veteran but I've been playing long enough and talked to enough people that I think a rather large portion of that 200k subscriber base is second and third accounts. Most of the "stories" you read on the main site involve something along the lines of "I scouted the gate with my alt and then..." or "I scanned them down with my alt then..." or "my alt got jumped and I warped in with my main and then..." etc etc and so on.
It seems there are quite a few advantages to having a second (or more) account in EVE. Maybe one day when I have the playtime i'll be able to make enough isk to purchase two gtc's so I can have two accounts "free" as when I'm able to make enough to buy one gtc i'll be making my current main "free."
I would also guess the number of players online is about 2/3 of the total. This is going on what the population of my corp and alliance chats are usually, and also that lots of new players will not have second accounts, and in the same way isk farmers, etc, will have more than second, which i think will probably balance out.

is 200k subs including the asian server?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
just because people have 2-3 accounts doesnt mean people actually play them at the same time..
In a recent dev blog an economist that CCP hired stated 190k paid accounts and 40k trial accounts. And I'm inclined to beleve those numbers.......even after being a SWG refugee lol.
And a number of sources have made the claim that EVE Online is growing at around 0.9% per week since launch. And since I live in a low sec area I tend to keep an eye on local and use the "see info" option to see who is in my system, and there does seem to be a good portion of caracters that have been around from 3 days to 8 months, and of cource you have the two+ years caracters. And a good way I have noticed to tell if a caracter is a new player or just an alt, is how the caracter is named and if they have a bio attached. Most new players have a "leet" looking name, and almost never have a bio, while alts useally names simular to their main, or more definite looking names. And sometimes have a bio included. Of cource this is far from fool-proof lol.
err you do realize that that is 25-35,000 accounts ONLINE at the same time as you, not total accounts? EVE is over 200,000 accounts and based on the typical trend of 'online' to 'total' that means it's probably over 250,000 accounts now.
It's by no means a gigantic MMORPG but it's definitely one of the bigger ones out there. Easily top 10.

The following was posted by a CCP dev in January.
"I don't have exact numbers, but less than 20% of the EVE community have 2 or more subscriptions. The other 80+% are single account users."

not really sure what the population is now, but im sure about one thing the game was alot better when there was 12k max online during prime weekend hours
I think they do have a seperate server just for china.......
==========================
The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
They do, but more because of political reasons..china wont want their folks to be in contact with the rest of the world without being able to control them

China specifically requested that CCP stand up a China only EVE server. That's the only reason that cluster exists.

Too bad CCP can't keep them off the Tranquility Server.
