This isn't about protecting the players or the game. This is one narrowminded company enforcing it's opinion and realworld view on a playerbase. Maybe someone more eloquent could explain it to you. This is beyond the scope of a game....

How's that going to work? A clean shave, a wig, and some skillfully-applied makeup can make almost any man look like a woman. I bet they want to see coochie.
Just because I dont agree with your point of view, means I don't understand what your saying?
Maybe if you weren't so close minded you could see my point of view and not try and insult me when you give me your rebuttal...
I don't think it is a big deal that I can't play a female character and everytime someone tries to explain why they see it as a big deal, all they can say is they don't want to look at the ass of a male character for the duration of their gaming experience.
I wonder how far they need to go to verify a persons gender on a webcam?
theres a lot of people who can cross dress and appear female. After the players figure out this obvious "loophole", I wonder what additional steps in verification and personal violation these people will stoop to?
"nope..sorry.. those are silicon!"

First you have to give me an argument. Only thing i read that came from you on this topic is some crap about how the devs all must be a bunch of pervs and what not. I havn't heard any good reasons why the choice to play a female toon is so important to you and everyone else.
Besides, nobody is being forced to play this game. They all choose to play it.

Its a severe invasion of privacy. Its also blatant discrimination.
However, its China, and its a private service.
anyway, the above quote is obvious flamebait. proof is in the first sentence. So I guess theres your argument, now run with it Archie Bunker
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
If i wanna wear a dress in real life i can, i shoudl and i will. Some people just do not get it.
You cannot logically demand freedom for yourself, as an argument against freedom for someone else. It's *their* game, if they want to impose a gender restriction then, just like you.....they can, they should, and they will.
Actually, thats not true. Well, it is to an extent. It depends on the laws of whatever country we're talking about. In this case, its China. You statement is correct.
However, in the United States and I would assume most other free countries its illegal to deny service of any sort due to gender and/or ethnecity.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
like any other 'freedom' it boils down to what are you willing to do about it..... if you want 'the freedom to play a girlie toon cause you wanna stare at girlybum instead of manlybum.' if they have the rule, don't play... from a western democratic standpoint how is this any different than any other game mechanic....don't like 'PvP' play on a PvE server. don't have PvE servers, don't play the game. they don't get your money and in the end it IS the almighty dollar that dictates what companies will or won't do.
/shrug
having said that, shouldn't the notion of 'players must prove their gender via webcam' work both ways, if it's not ok for a male to play a female toon, why is it ok for a female to play a male toon... all the 'i'm a girly-girl gimme free stuff' put aside for a moment, please
and 2) having to prove id with a webcam is potentially damaging on a revenue basis isn't it..... i know my wife plays MMO's and we don't have a webcam, her not playing means i'm not playing either.
did i mention....
/shrug
"We aren't going to ... Period. End of statement."
It's not as much as whether or not they have as a rule whether a male should play only a male toon. It's the matter of how they enforce it. The right of privacy exists as a law in China with a few differences.
Thing is the webcam violates that right, nothing more nothing less. Of course as some here suggested, they can always abandon the game which is a very logical course of action, since china has a great amount of online games anyway.
A friend is not him who provides support during your failures.A friend is the one that cheers you during your successes.
It's an offense to privacy if you ask me. That's the real big issue there. Who's to say the guy you show your face to is a not a pervert. Besides you can always have some girl in front of the webcam for you. a bit stupid that whole idea
It's a communist country... they don't care about the privacy of their people. It's do what they say or go to prison.
If i wanna wear a dress in real life i can, i shoudl and i will. Some people just do not get it.

But that's not denying someones ability to play based on their gender....
This is denying someone the ability to play a cross dresser in a game.
lol, how far can someone go to prove how idiot he is? prove your ID to play a game???.................
ok i have the answer for the chinesse players :P if you have a sister make her register for you and after she prove that she is a girl via the camera, you can create your female har .
oops and if you want to play a male har just do another account
i hope that in future they will not ask you to be with your webcam all the time .that will be bad for the female hars.....
i just wonder who decide something like this...........
First of all, I'm curious to know if this company is doing this because of a govt crackdown, or to make themselves more appealing to Chinese consumers much like American companies will pull certain adult content games so those games will be stocked by WalMart and GameStop. I'm guessing it's also possible that a lot of Chinese gamer accounts are actually held by the parents, in which case the devs could have come up with this rule to say "hey Mom and Dad, we're protecting your little emperor from perverts who pretend to be girls!"
But in response to earlier posts about weirdos making female toons, I really don't get what's the big deal about what toon you play. I play a male undead warlock in WOW - last I checked I don't actually have rotting flesh or summon demons in real life. My character is NOT an extension of me - it's a tool for me to enjoy gameplay with my friends. Personally, I find people who get way too emotionally attached to their character even more disturbing than guys who roleplay females. I had a friend who used to talk about his daydream fantasies of actually becoming his human paladin, and I think in the back of his mind he really wished he could run around whacking people with a hammer.
I also have female characters in Guild Wars because some of the male characters look so metrosexual that I may as well play a shapely chick toon. Once again, my character's just another tool. In fact, I love how sometimes the other team in PVP will target me because they think I'm a real-life girl and will instantly crumble, only to get the ever-living smackdown instead.

1.) It has nothing to do with privacy.
2.) The US government and the Bush administration could give a rat's arse about privacy either ie....wire tapping of US citizens communications without a warrant, etc...
3.) It's a private game put out by a private company. It's their rules and you either don't play the game or accept it and play the game. I love it when middle-school kids or people who have the mentality of a 7th grader start to act like lawyers.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

I agree with that thinking to be honest
This is ridiculous.
well then customers must say our money our fun.and a BIG no thanks we will not take...
then maybe they will think again about their rules.
If this works out for them, maybe they can move onto possibly banning that deceptive lead paint as well.
I'm sick of the lead paint perverts always masquarading as oil based paints in all our mmorpgs. This cross-substancing has got to be stopped!
Someone probably already used that in this thread by now, but dammit I'll take that chance.
