Howdy, Stranger!

It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

if you tried it before, give Eve online another try!

I have tried to play EVE twice in the past, and lost interest before completing the tutorial both times.

As of a few months ago with the "Revelations 2" patch a new tutorial was instituted..... its like a whole different game!!

If you wanted to like EVE but just couldnt do it, download the free trial again!!!  It's much less boring and much less confusing then it used to be.  Within minutes you are fighting NPC's and warping to and from the space station instead of the old long waits.....  they also do a MUCH better job of teaching you to use the UI now.... it actually seems like an average learning curve instead of insanely steep.

It's still basically a pen and paper space RPG. The game would play the same as a browse title. Combat is click mods and sitting there while picking your nose. Money = win. PvP is open, but consists of mass groups of laggy fleets going around system to system for hours trying to find decent fights among the large, but underpopulated world. Even before you get to that part you need to have subscribed for 6+ months to have skills enough to really matter. They claim it to be sandbox but what fun is a sandbox without shovels and pales? The only thing to do in this so called sandbox is fight mindless rats or click your miner icons and sit for 2 hours getting ore. OR, you could PvP, which requires tons of time mining to buy a ship, but even then the combat is slow and boring as hell. Sure, its a sandbox, but theres nothing to do in it.

    LOL!

How can a person of skill and ability shorten the time it takes to fly a Battleship?  Effectively, can a dunce fly a battleship with the same amount of time played as a pro?

He speaks the truth. No matter how good you are, it still takes a set time to get skills. Even with skills, the best fitted ship wins. All you do is click mods and sit anyway.

Any Turretbased bs loses to two or three well fitted frigates.
130M full t2 Bs vs. three frigates with t1 or t2, worth ~20M.

The frigates will win if flown with brainpower.

Look at Goonswarm in their early days, then think again if you got the rock-scissor-paper-system in right..

Most likely got banned well at least one of them for that deleted post.

Its sort of telling the way they resorted to rascist insulting remarks to fight back. Which is one reason i recomended that people stop feeding them as it does nothing for the topic in hand.

I want to take a moment to refute the trolls assertion that it takes an extreme amount of time to get into EVE and be a major player.  What follows is a Battleship skill training plan that will take any player who spent their first month properly training up their basic/advanced learning skills to level 4 respectively.

As you will see, you can fly a good sniping Battleship in about 3 months play time.  Also note, my character has basic learning skills up to level 5 and is wearing +5 implants and my actual training times are about 15% shorter than the amounts you see here.

    Skill Plan:

    1. Electronics I (7 minutes, 42 seconds)

    2. Electronics II (35 minutes, 54 seconds)

    3. Electronics III (3 hours, 22 minutes, 55 seconds)

    4. Electronics IV (19 hours, 8 minutes, 4 seconds)

    5. Electronics V (4 days, 12 hours, 14 minutes, 27 seconds)

    6. Cloaking I (46 minutes, 13 seconds)

    7. Long Range Targeting I (15 minutes, 24 seconds)

    8. Long Range Targeting II (1 hour, 11 minutes, 46 seconds)

    9. Long Range Targeting III (6 hours, 45 minutes, 53 seconds)

    10. Long Range Targeting IV (1 day, 14 hours, 16 minutes, 8 seconds)

    11. Engineering IV (19 hours, 8 minutes, 4 seconds)

    12. Engineering V (4 days, 12 hours, 14 minutes, 27 seconds)

    13. Weapon Upgrades I (12 minutes, 48 seconds)

    14. Weapon Upgrades II (59 minutes, 38 seconds)

    15. Weapon Upgrades III (5 hours, 37 minutes, 17 seconds)

    16. Weapon Upgrades IV (1 day, 7 hours, 48 minutes, 3 seconds)

    17. Weapon Upgrades V (7 days, 11 hours, 53 minutes, 35 seconds)

    18. Advanced Weapon Upgrades I (36 minutes, 21 seconds)

Eh if you like EVE you will probably like POTBS, both are slower paced ship builders.  Obviously theres a market for this, but I rpefer faced paced games with quick progression. I don't want my life to become the game just to get somewhere.

Um, I think you just proved the opposite, who the heck wants to spend 3 months to get somewhere in a game?

In WOW or EQ2 I can get to max level in a month and be raiding, and be top on the server if i was so inclined

I log into games for escape not to spend months.. but to each their own.

I belive his point is some people here are saying it will take like for example 2 years minimum to be usefull in PvP in a big ship which is of course wrong now if you wanted to be usefull in say a cruiser the time it would take would be even less.

You can sit in the biggest non-capital ships within 60 days. true.

But i prefer people in smaller ships for pvp. easily trained in two weeks to be ubar...battleships are nice damagedealers, but imho they suck without proper support. and those are the ones in the small ships :P

Not saying tho it doesant take some time to get really good at your chosen combat nich [mine is close combat specilist with blasters]. But then again its that type of game and when you do get there well there is a lot to occupy you till then.

You can be effective in a couple of DAYS, even in very large fleet.

The role name is "tackler", basically you prevent an enemy ship to flee, so your mates can distrupt it.

In a couple of weeks, you can pilot a cruiser, becoming a support  / anti-tackler guy.

In a couple of months, as posted before, you can pilot a battleship, becoming a member of your fleet backbone.

Lag is very bad at the moment in large fleet battles. With the next (free as always) patch, it should be far away better.

The main downfall with Eve is that no one that starts after the game lunched can "catch up" with the people that began playing from day 1. All the skills in Eve are based over time. Doesn't matter how much or how little you play. They have basically alienated any potential new customers since launch. I wonder how successful his game would be if it weren't for the time-based xp system.

And the downfall of other games is that it only depends on your time spent ingame, so someone who has a job will make less progress than a 13y old kiddie.
eves skillsystem favours people with few time, the others favour the one who can dedicate more time.

its up to personal preference anyways, but i like to do something else when i want to in rl without thinking "ohnoes, my guild wont play with me after i come back, because they are several levels ahead of me and i have to play even more so i can play again"

Carriers are Capital ships. The big toys for Low security space.

You need support in these. You need a FLEET supporting them. Because like Battleships they are often helpless alone.

They serve a specific role, they are supportcraft with quite some firepower. The bigger the ship, the more support it needs.

You wont be happy with a ship costing 1.5b in ISK, where a battleship costs 120M. Its expensive and only for the guys in open-pvp-space.

And they are really cool too.

As you will see, you can fly a good sniping Battleship in about 3 months play time.  Also note, my character has basic learning skills up to level 5 and is wearing +5 implants and my actual training times are about 15% shorter than the amounts you see here.

Um, I think you just proved the opposite, who the heck wants to spend 3 months to get somewhere in a game?

In WOW or EQ2 I can get to max level in a month and be raiding, and be top on the server if i was so inclined

I log into games for escape not to spend months.. but to each their own.

Who cares if you can max out a wow or eq character in a month when the game runs out of gameplay in 2 months.  EVE is a long term game, 3 months is nothing.  Nobody said you had to be in a BS to PvP either.  You can PvP in EVE in a week and be useful.  New characters now start with 800k skillpoints and you can make a character that can use T2 small guns, a MWD, and tackling mods in just a few days.
