MMOrpg's are boring?

I keep trying mmo's and most just suck, wow was fine for a while and i enjoyed Lineage2 aswell but these games wasent exactly good or fun, it was more of addicting.  I think dev's have failed to make mmorpgs fun, nothing new seems appealing to me anymore and i guess this is the end of my gaming. Dota still lives for me thoe :P Will try spellborn but after that i am done, there is just no fun in grining for no purpose other than leet items or levels. Fun quests do not seem to exsist and rp is the only thing that can keep these games alive imo. LOTRO is perfect example of this, its a shallow game but pritty nice for rp, for pure gameing it suck thoe.

AOC seems like somthing .. decent at best but warhammer is just more of them same imo.

Can somone recomend a diffrent title for me?

I love to play online and with other ppl, i like rpg. So mmorpg should be my thing. Just that dev's seems to have a hard time to make a fun game, UO was FUN but that was like.. 10 years ago? hello! WOW was fun a while but not like UO, it basicly had everything that was released to that date simplifyed. Darkfall could be a great game, but i gave up on it a while ago. After spellborn i will just take a break from gaming for a while and come back when dev's get a clue on how to make a fun game with a diffrent concept than those that all current mmos seems to be using.

If you just don't like grinding don't grind theres more to a game then grinding all the time to get a max character.Sit around with some friends in the game and just talk  thats pretty much what i do.

Than.. what diffrence gaming from chatting in msn? Like i said, many games got nice community and rp possibilitys but the gaming is not so good.

I know what you mean. Most MMORPG's are all about grinding to make you play for as long as possible. But look at other RPGs like say Dark Messiah, there's no grinding, it's all action and very fun. If there were an MMO like that, they would have lots more players and really good ratings.

The combat system for AoC look promising, maybe you should play that when it comes out. If that doesn't work, I myself am going to lose faith in all MMORPGs.

I agree.  I really don't understand why the desire to play in a massively multiplayer persistent world has to equate to a the levelgrinding game.  I like the social element of MMOs.  That doesn't mean I give a crap about building up characters.  That got old for me years ago.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

well there is a few videos and they have released about half of the classes availiable so there is a decent amount of info on aion all u gotta do is look

As someone else said, MMO's arent for you. You can say devs dont make fun games all you want. Fact is they are making money. Some companies have even spent 30 mil just to get started. SWO (Stargate Worlds Online) spent 30 mil just on the IP and things to get them started, now they are developing the game. I seriously doubt the devs are doing things wrong if a company can drop that kind of money. Devs make what people will play. Thats not to say I dont want a more indepth game than whats currently out because I do. I however am smart enough to realize that while most games now are lacking what i PERSONALLY desire.......thats not what the current MMO market is going to give simpley because what I want isnt going to make them as much as what the masses want.

I also love single player rpgs but in my opinion thoes games are getting really dumbed down as well and I havent found one in a long time that got my attention. Doesnt mean the developers of RPG's cant do it right either ;)

I think the fun element of mmorpgs, certainly for me has been grouping. Problem is this has got old when PvE AI is limited and when you got the same type of roles over and over rehashed in each mmo. Dota is very good in this perspective by having that little bit more variation.

The other appealling element I think is the standard rpg element, but this kind of loses its appeal when you do quests for the hell of it, and for the sheer necessity just to add in as a timesink. That and every person around you doing the exact same quest as you.

So yeah I agree, it can get old and there are people just sheer addicted to the games.

  • nomadiannomadian Member Posts: 3,490

That is why you will not find a new one, not one will be as much fun as the first, ever.
This is a commonly used excuse for the number of rehashes of the same thing in the mmorpg market at the moment. It will not be as fun as the first? Ok, does this apply to rpgs?, rts'?, fps'? Nope, I've found multiple titles of one genre fun.

The way I see it is mmorpgs are lacklustre at the moment and I think its going to take a groundbreaking mmo to come along and prove this.

People play MMOs for hours a day for months or longer, then they complain they're boring. I got bored of WoW after 8 months. I thought that was pretty good going. Most games become boring quicker than that. MMOs are less boring than most games I'd say.

Let's not give the devs too much credit now. Rehashed, reheated and uninspired are common themes on this website regarding modern day mmos. Its not like they're knocking our socks off and the OP is complaining, its the fact that whats done in mmos is done for business reasons by people who pay their mortgage with these things. What does that mean for us? Less creativity, less risk, less investment and fewer (if any) free thinkers at the table when decisions are being made. My contention has always been that the reason the mmos are boring is the people that develop them are either myopic bean counters or the same technogeeks (no offense) that helped usher in the 2nd gen of mmos in the first place. We need new blood behind the scenes. New blood without ego or arrogance. With vision and perspective. Preferably that have read books whose titles didn't end in "for Dummies" and have little aversion to sunlight. While there's no doubt we are in the throws of the decline of the second age of mmos, there is a groundswell building and creative minds at work, and one day, when it seems its darkest and the genre will be down for the count, The 3rd gen will begin...with a bang.

I will say that there is something to be said for leaving the games and making your own life more exciting. The rewards to be found in this life and beyond far exceed any pixelated prize any dev could spew out.

Well, dont think it's as simple as that.

I think I know where this guy is coming from..

Now I love MMO's. Dont touch my 360 anymore, they're the only games I play now. But I have to admit I'm getting very bored with whole "pick a class, grind to 50, start an alt" sort of MMO. WoW was different cause I had so many mates that played that game, we had a grest laugh. SWG and UO are the only 2 MMO's that gave me something different other than gringing EXP or Rep. I gave up on LOTRO at about lvl 47 an honestly just be bothered going the last 3 lvl's.

I have found some salvation tho, I had know idea there was sooo many free MMO's out there. I've been trying them all to find one that gives me something different and finally found one that quite knew on the market.

I'd suggest everyone gives "Sword of the New World" a go. It plays a bit like Neverwinter Nights. I'm really enjoying it and different from the usual sort of MMO's that I've became bored of. Give it a bash, purely cause it's free to download and play! Or have a hunt around, there's loads out there. You might find one that's more suited to what your looking for as I haven't found recently from the MMO's I've bought on the High Street.

In my opinion its simple! dont base a game around quests. In eq we didn't have too many quests so we used exploration and dungeon crawling to satisfy us. Now in games there are so many quests it takes away our imagination. I play VG and never grind. The way i do this is to not go pick every quest a town has then onto the next, if you do that you will be grinding so much it will grind you! There is so much emphasis on questing these days that we get pulled along. I played wow for 12 months and got sick of joining a group only to have half of it leave as soon as we have killed the mob they needed. i found myself seeing part of a dungeon then quickly onto next dungeon for next quest. In Everquest we used to explore every corner of a dungeon. Quests were few and far between and what they had took you all over the world.

If devs would be brave and think of reasons to keep us in dungeons and such after we have killed quest mobs then it wouldn't be a grind so much! Remember all no one makes us grind. if we grind it is because we choose to grind. dont want to grind? then dont go explore, chat with friends, go take on a boss that wipes you the first 6 times you fight it. nothing in these games stops you fighting above your weight so challenge yourself. my 25 ranger was kiting a level 29 5 dot mob two nights ago! it took me forever to kill it but god did it feel satisfying after.

Companys will cater for us if we grind! the only way to force them to change thier ways is for us to stop the grind and show them what we want!

Maby you are right but i finde grouping fun , thats never the problem, its what we DO thats totally retarded. Small group with high level of teamwork and allot of exploration would be fun imo :P

I know its not just me, we are not so diffrent after all :P  Those who are new to these games will finde it fun at start but soon it gets dull, its simply not stimulating grinding past a certin point. The brain needs a challange or els i would go and watch some crapy shit at tv.  Challange combined with community would make hell of a game i think.

I am gonna work my ass of and invest in a mmorpg that's fun !!

  • shukes33shukes33 Member Posts: 1,051

Agree with that last comment friend. slamm group that has to work well to succeed and a lot of exploration would be perfect for me. do me a favour! if you ever find a game that fits what your looking for i would be interested to hear about it so post again to let us know :)

    good hunting to you!

dude if you want a fun fast paced game try tabula rasa. im not a big sci-fi fan but that game is just fun. watch some vids on it on you tube or stage6.com. when i saw it was a shooter style game i wasnt excited.
That does sound original and different and if its not overboard on the sci-fi stuff that might be one I will look forward to for sure.

Agree, i would never play that game. I understand that some ppl like that kinde of games, but at some point we got to move on. Games like Tabula rasa and LOTRO is taking one step back, they are ripoffs done worse than the originals with little creativity. They are simply there to get some cash out of the new mmorpg commnity. LOTRO might be nice for casual players and i know i could enjoy it if i rp with frindes but the game it self shallow and simply boring to me. NCsoft announced that they were not making Aion like Linage2/asian games, they are focusing on western playerbase but i feel like i know this company to well by now, lost faith in them long time ago.

But not here to argue about what game is good or not, question is. IS there any diffrent games out there?

  • nephren25nephren25 Member UncommonPosts: 143

why do you feel tabula rasa is a rip off of other games? if your talking about planetside then your way wrong bro there was no lvl'n in it and it was a fps TR isn't a fps more of a MMO then a shooter just uses guns and fast paced action like a fps. when they were making the game i wasn't exicted at all i was thinking another planetside /sigh. but when i got the beta i tryed it out and i was really shocked it is true and true a mmo. i like the cloning where you can clone your toon at the job split and they dont even have to look the same or same name you just dont have to grind out to job change again so you can make sevral toons off your one toon if you like your main more then delete your clone or vice versa. im telling you try the beta out you can get it from gamespy for free. or watch vids now i dont know about end game cause im not there right now but from what i have seen should be good ole fun ^_^. but we all are free to think what we want. just wanted to let ya know this is not a planetside rip off.
