Dev Chat-The good, the bad, the ugly...

The Good-Watching the people change their names into things like "Tentacle_Hentai_Rape" when he announced maruaders would get a tentacle grab skill to "chase" down their opponent.  Funniest thing ever to watch everyone degrade into hilarity.

The Bad-Finding out that still no news on crafting...

The Ugly-The wall of text before and after dev chat.

In all seriousness though, what was everyone else's reactions to the whole chat?

Though it was what I expected, I found it pretty weak.  All the good questions "can't answer at this time," and all the crap questions you could look up on any WAR site were answered.  Not to mention they just goofed off half the time.  Nothing relevant was accomplished.

  • ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

I had asked my question over half an hour before they announced to take no more questions, but my question was NOT asked. I am greatly dissappointed in MMORPG. It smells like favouritism, asking only questions "appropriate" to you. :(

I had asked to elaborate about the social side, how far WAR had one or if it was war everywhere only, like I recently saw in playing Tabula Rasa. But apparently its something they were not interested to ask. Pft. Thanks for this example of censored journalism, and asking things we ALREADY knew 100 times instead of really critical questions. :(

    What a waste of time.

They did say that a lot of questions wouldn't be asked. Hell I asked my question at the very beginning and it didn't get up there to the very end. So I guess you can say favoritism, but could you imagine how many questions they had to read?

I cant say, but when they know how much time they have they can LOCK it when they see "ok now we have enough". Everything else smells. At least in MY understanding of announcing big-mouthed "Warhammer Online Team answers your questions!" As if.

I don't know man, it left me in practically the same state of knowledge about the game. No big revelations or anything... if it was so exclusive they should've come up with at least one big thing to tell us so we could get over-excited and talk about it till this month's newsletter came out. Good thing I didn't stop what I was doing when the chat started... after reading the transcription, I'd say it was pretty much useless. Your question was certainly more interesting than anything they put up, and practically everything they answered was just a matter of wading through the info already released to know about it. I guess we can just wait for the newsletter for all the good stuff.

It had one cool answer though... Magus types summoning Tzeentch daemons. Uncontrollable daemons. Rock fucking on!

It was utter crap, the process of which they chose the questions was a joke.  Some actual questions that they asked :

How is development going? answer was them joking around and saying its fun.

    Is it multiplayer? ...wtf?

Is crafting going to be in the game? ....

What game should I play while waiting for warhammer? Whats this have to do with warhammer? WTF

Many more of these questions were asked.  If they had so many questions they had to block it off why only ask these stupid ass questions?  I put mine in the queue within the first 5 minutes and it was never asked so they were filtering out the questions asked.

I read thru it the transcript, much easier then being there with all the name changes and people comming and going. I'd hate to HAVE to be there for my job.

Overall without playing the game i did get more of a sense of the way the game is going to flow, not any new info i hadn't heard before, but just reinforcing the theme's of it being a Casual friendly RvR Game. What DAoC was at the beginning. But alot more options for what kind of rvr you want to fight in at the time.

There team seems very upbeat and positive, and cookies made with love are always better then cookies made with stress. (not true actually, but sounded good).

i waited for an hour and hadmy question in early and they dumped it, so i sent another and waited and it got dumped.

no responses were give as to why the questions were dropped, it just said you can now ask devbot another question!

    1) whats the minimum system specs?

    2) will there be player housing?

i can see why the more relevent multiplayer question and all the daoc relating stuff got thru... not.

so i left at the end wishing i had not bothered with that fiasco and less sure i will even bother to buy the game.

My question is, what did you expect? For them to tell us all the details of crafting or maybe on a simple IIRC chat room tell the whole world what the last classes are. Come on. Atleast we got some useful things out of it.

So rather then complaining or worse, acting like some people did in the chat, and making the community look bad, why not look at what we did get out of it? If you cant find the good, then why keep talking about it?

Both of your questions have been answered before.

    1) Unknown, won't be known till the game is nearer release. They've said that repeatedly.

    2) Not likely. Guild housing/banking is a "maybe".

Go read the blogs w/interviews or videos.

Aside from some of the idiotic community members in the irc chat it was a decent time even if nothing new was handed out. I swear WoW has soured the mmo community forever.

I don't understand why people were expecting them to reveal new information about the game.  There is no way marketing would allow that.  Marketing is going to have an iron-grip on what information gets released and when.  No way are they going to risk allowing some devs feed the public new info as they would have no control over how much info got out.  They might say only say 'x' but a dev could easily get a little carried away and also talk about 'y' by mistake.  It is better just to not allow them to discuss anything that has not yet been released to the public.

These chats are pure PR and are never informative.  That is why I never participate in them unless I'm the one being asked questions.

Agreed.  These Dev Chats are mostly for entertainment, introduce people who maybe just heard about the game and to get a chance to see the personalilites of the developers.    Some people seemed to think that they were going to announce the last elf classes or something.

By now people following the game should know that major news is saved for major conferences and shows.  It baffles me why people ALWAYS ask questions that they know would be big revealtions (How does Crafting work?  How do Living Guilds work?).    Everyone KNOWS they wont' be answered in an informal IRC discussion, but we get the questions anyway.    We'll get the answers to those questions the way we always have - major press releases, major articles or major events.

Participate in these Dev Chats if you want to have fun and because they're humorous.  They let you get a feel for the people developing the game and they result in amusing anecdotes like the Tentacle-Grab, which could end up becoming an inside joke like Paul B's sunglasses.

Don't bother participating in them if you expect revealation of previously secret information, for that wait for articles on the game or the game shows.

Read the transcript seemed to be more just hype ZOMG Devs talk to them! when in reality its just a rushed hour and nothing much revealed.

Same way it use to be for UO Stratics Dev chats, and old SWG dev chats before that game was released.

EVERY SINGLE DEV CHAT is a letdown, and just a pub stunt for the site hosting it.

  • TyfreakyTyfreaky Member Posts: 239

I missed the dev's chat by a few minutes and read the transcript, I am glad i missed it, i would have been very upset if my question was not asked.

Honestly these chats are publicity stunts they wont actually tell you anything, i don't even know why they do them. Why chat with the developers when their main response to everything is "cant tell you now but its awesome"

I am also really disapointed with the MMORPG staff about their censorship of questions. It really upsets me that they pretty much only asked questions that would get a humorous reply.

You would almost think they were on Mythic's payroll or bribed in some way to take it easy on them...

Sorry if I am olkd fashioned, but instead of asking so many pointless questions (like "how is working for WAR like, do you enjoy it?") they might have focussed on useful questions. From the WAR devs I would have expected, if going into a Dev chat event to be prepared to have something more substatial to say. I can find more interesting forms of entertainment, if THATS what it was meant to be.

Certainly so close to release they could have at least given a HINT what specs to expect. No one would have expected a 100% detailled spec list, but it would have been among the most substantial questions to ask. Sorry of I am so old fashioned as to asking for useful questions. Maybe you get that way with age. =P

  • the only good questions answered was the thing about Marauders gething the tenticle grab.  The other good questions were left un answered like usualy.  Over all most of the questions were either stupid or have allready been answered.  Such a pointless event.  Next time you plan to host something like this try to see if they will actually answer some new questions or at least give use some new info at the very end.

Well, now I feel better about my question. ( I never do come up with good questions to be honest.) Come to think of it. Tentacle grab seemed to be the only thing revealed.

They can't give hints.  I've been involved in PR stuff, marketing and developement in a similar industry.  You never let devs (or the equiv) give hints about anything for a whole variety of reasons.  A couple key reasons though are

    1) They are normally excited about something they are working on, especially when they hold a big secret.  As soon as you let one give a hint there is a very real chance that the hint will go too far -the dev will say way more than he intended and not even realize it at the time.

    2) If a dev says it then the majority of the fanbase will take it as golden.  Then, as developement moves forward and said feature that was hinted at gets dropped the fans will start yelling 'Liars, that was never planned you just made it up!'.  I've seen it way too many times.

In a chat like this never expect some startling revelation.  You are just setitng yourself up for diappointment.  These chats are nothing more than PR and a chance for the fans to get to know the people behind the scene - and barely at that.

When you said that LionHead Studios came to mind. Promising the world and then being crushed by their own ambitions. Black and White and Fable are very good examples of that.

Yeah, how did the "Does it have multiplayer?" question get through?  Come on, that is just crap.  I don't so much them saying they can't answer certain things, especially because all the "We can't say" questions were expected.  But they completely avoided some questions.  The one question that immediately comes to mind is the person who asked what do dwarven women get in advancement, like how male dwarves get longer, more burly beards.  They basically just avoided the question and said male dwarves get bigger beards.  I don't think they actually know or don't have anything in place right now for female dwarves.  If they didn't know, they should have just said so instead of making a joke out of the question.  It was like a dev chat with 13 year olds.

Wow... seems like there's a lot of pissed off people about the Dev chat.  You might want to remember a few things.

    1. Any information about the game that can be released is already on the official site.  Any new information adheres to a strict marketing schedule.  So of course no new information is going to be released.

    2. A developer chat is not really something for hardcore fans of the game being developed.  People that already know every single piece of released information are not going to get anything new out of a developer chat.

What they could get out of the chat is a closer look at the personalities behind the developers & have a chance to ask questions that the devs. don't normally have a chance to answer, such as about their work history or personal lives.

Also as far as them not answering all of the questions.  Grow up.  I highly doubt there was favoritism.  Questions should have been presented to the Mythic staff on a first come first serve basis & they chose which ones to answer or to discard.

I have seen no evidence to the contrary.

PS: Rekam.  They did answer that question.  They said that the female Dwarves hair gets longer, just in a joking way.

"There is as yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer."

Well, I'm glad that MMORPG.com could pull off the chat, I thought that was a good sign that this is the best MMO site to belong to.  However, I didn't get much out of the chat.  I feel like they evaded all the good questions.  I'm like you OP, I need to know what the deal is with crafting, it's driving me crazy.  It seems to me that they are keeping a lot secret for the time being and it is getting me anxious as hell.  I just hope that they start letting us in on new information and stop repeating the already known.
