As the two games are scheduled for release almost at the same time. I guess they will compete against eachother. Or will they? Maybe they will attract different playertypes? Still, they both have FPS-elements. As for myself I've been waiting for a new game and I will wait and see how things turns out before I decide which of the two I will invest my money in.

Will attract different play types... I dont see them competing with each other much if at all.
well they were competing for my money =p and hellgate will get it. Seems a little more fun to me. TR open beta is zzzzzzzzzzz. It plays like a single players, so whats the need to have all these other people around lagging it up for me? Not to mention you dont really need a group for most of the game. So i'd much rather play in a faster paced games with a cooler setting. TR you just run up to a mob, and hold down your shoot button =p
Yeah... I did some reading on TR and it seems most ppl are dissapointed with it. So I'm leaning more and more towards HG:L. But hey, I said I was gonna play VG before it was released so... The hype goes on!

The only way Tabula could compete (if it was aimed at the same market) would be if Hellgate was even more bugged than it. And that would be a challenge in itself
But their not really for the same markets... Hellgate is more aimed at the single player market looking for the next Diablo. That's the biggest flaw they made with this game in my opinion, it's not well marketed.
Most people don't even know or care about this game, even those who should. Myself I only realised it was the perfect game for me only 2 months ago but I had seen info on it for the past 2 years.
Word to mouth will probably be the decisive factor in it's success
lol TR and HGL is no way the same game at all TR is mmo HGL is SOLO and crap - HGL is not fun at all ther a more fun ind TR and TR is a mmorpg HGL is a lame solo play game so - TR - FTW and HGL can eat my shorts is a crap game and ther a to many bugs in HGL so TR for me
Hellgate is as much a MMO as Guild Wars is. I don't believe they will be competing head to head, but in my opinion Hellgate is going to outsell TR by a lot. While I have tons of respect for Mr. Garriott I think he dropped the ball with TR. On the other hand Bill Roper and Flagship successfully nailed a spiritual successor to Diablo with several MMO style features.
I don't know if I would classify TR as near-future. I didn't read a whole lot of backstory stuff for it, but are they even earth humans from the same universe or whatever?
Every time I see someone say that TR is "shooter style" I want to stab somebody. Unfortunately, I can't stab people through the interwebs, so my fiance takes most of the punishment. I figure it's a couple of days before someone notices the wounds in the supermarket. I know that you're not defending it, Fion, or saying that it actually is "shooter style", but I just feel obligated to say that it's a trap! While it feels like a shooter because you're running around with a crosshair on your screen, you're going to be depressed the first time you go to kill something and you realize that all you have to do it click and hold down in the general direction and the game takes care of the rest.
I haven't played Hellgate yet (that will probably happen tomorrow, because I pre-ordered the game and activated my beta account on Friday, so I'm just waiting for an email), TR is about as fast-paced and intense as WoW, maybe even less so. It takes about as long to kill an enemy in TR as it does in WoW, but with less than half of the effort. I can't stress enough that virtually all you do is just keep left clicking (or holding the left mouse button down, depending on your choice of weapon) and things fall over. There isn't a whole lot of playing around with various skills to keep your enemy at a range or debilitating them. Click, click, die. Repeat. (Please don't think that I'm praising WoW. I hate WoW just as much as the next MMORPG.com reader. It was simply for comparison.)
The light-weight thing is pretty accurate, I suppose. Combat is about all you're doing in TR. Click, click, die. Repeat.
Like I said, I have yet to get to try Hellgate out, but it would have to be a complete Fiesta del Failure to be worse than TR. They're competing in the sense that they're online games releasing within a week of one another, but TR is going to have one hell of a time keeping people past a month. I'm sure there are people that will enjoy it, but if these forums are any indication, the general consensus on TR is that it falls short virtually everywhere.

It seems as though HG is a single player offline game with the option to play on online servers not a true online MMO?
I also saw that they were going to charge a monthly fee.

Bladezz (The Guild)
The answer is simple and that is one is F2P and the other is P2P. What you're trying to do is compare Guild Wars to World of Warcraft.
CURRENTLY PLAYING SHAIYA
The reviews I have read of people who have actually played Hellgate say it's good but with several bugs. Also, one review said it had no in game music which is odd as I was playing music from the game today and it was pretty good. Finally the beta servers were shut down over the weekend for bug removal and the beta will be running until close to release contrary to the news that it was ending on 10/07. Why do people want an mmo anyway when most all they do is complain about juvenile players, and gold spammers? Their biggest contribution to gaming is complaining about typing in caps. Woot fun, fun.
HGL can be played single player and offline I believe. But your offline characters can not be carried over into online. It's more like guild wars than anything.
Fion : It's true that they both appeal to mostly the same crowd but what I meant is that they aren't Marketed to the same ones.
Hellgate looks far more better.I cant wait to play it
I will certainly give HG a try. Don't think I'll be doing the same with TR.
I'm in the beta of Tabula Rasa and when I logged in last night to try and play a bit I just couldn't do it. I was like, uggh, not all the same repetitive stuff again, too tired for this right now. lol So I loaded up Deus Ex: Invisible War and played that awhile before going to bed.
Well, HGL is getting my money and TR is not .
What this guy said and I'll also be subscribing monthly as well.
What is TR? :P
Hellgate all the way baby...
TR=Tabula Rasa. I too am gonna get those monthly updates. I might even do the one time payment. =p
Yay! I got into the beta yesterday and played it last night! This game is pretty awesome! Way better than TR! I'm definitely hooked! Wonder if I can scrounge up enough cash to pay for the lifetime membership... hmm.... Wish it wasn't so expensive!
What this guy said and I'll also be subscribing monthly as well.
Same here;
Both games are definitely going to be competing. 1. they are both somewhat similar. sci fi, shooter, rpg style games. They are both mmo type games with lots of players and screenshots show them both being somewhat similar in other ways as well.
So for now they are competing although HG:L still has it's NDA up which begs the question what are they hiding....

Both games are going to disapoint. Tabula Rasa is exactly like Guild Wars but every instance you travel into is persitant meaning there are people in every zone you instance to.
The massive part to Hell Gate London is really stat tracking and item saving. Urban Enviroments with stringed lobbies along the path of the storyline for people to form groups and actually see who is in the room multiplayer. In the majority of the game there is instanced small zones with the ability to see people chatting in your chat window. Both games seem targeted at the 16-18 year old markets.
These are not the games you take off work for, so obviously that translates to what? You fill in the blank.
Graphics and control wise Hellgate London is better than TR, open space larger enviorments TR has Hellgate London. Which game is more ready for launch than the other, TR.
Sadly I come to the conclusion we are out of luck for a while untill something Huge like WoW,SWG, or Eq2 launches. Non of these games up until this date have the scope and magnitude of the 3 I just listed. Very small scale is the feeling you get right away. The calm before the storm is what I am trying to illude to, there isnt one.
I watched a guy at a internet cafee demonstrate the game that is why I am aware of this information.
I pre ordered both games, currently looking into how to cancel the orders Trash thats all we get...... AoC is our only hope
