Everyone can come here with their pro-SoE arguments and point to the fact that MxO is still running and all that jazz but what it all comes down to is what Bloodwork stated previously: the lack of funds.
SoE is apparently this powerhouse, or so the rumor goes, so why is this game not generating any revenue? Why is their not a big publicity campaign to get this game back on track?
I've been around (MxO) for two years, and I cannot give you one moment under SoE's takeover that I look back on fondly. But if you ask me about the Monolith days and I can give you plenty.
What most people who say they're fine with SoE fail to mention is the lack of support from SoE itself. Yeah, they gave us CR2, but it was a system not really needed and you seem to forget the six month draught of, well, anything. You say they give new content, but that content is a white hallway that's always been there, archive missions that we've already done, re-textured items of clothes and guns I got sick of seeing years ago, and the sniper rifle still looks like a freaking M16! (ok, that last is just a pet peeve of mine ) To the devs' credit though, they can only do so much with the limited amount of funds they have to work with, and I applaud that, but by now, they're just beating a dead horse.
The one underlying truth is this: MxO would not exist were it not for station access, b/c most people don't get station access for MxO, and no one buys MxO either, as can be found in another poster's claim that Gamestop no longer carries it. When was the last time anyone's seen MxO in a retail store?
So yes, MxO exists now only b/c of SoE, but it's only a byproduct of the SoE marketing scheme, otherwise it would be dead. If SoE would put more money into the game, we'd see more content, more quests, more everything, but the simple fact that this game seems to be going nowhere and fast has lost lots, and I mean lots, of players, including, finally, myself.
Well, I am one of new players that recently started playing MxO. This si an excellent game, it really is alot better is so many ways then most out there.
Is SOE could muster enough funds to make an "expansion", bundle it with the core game & re-marketed it to the public I really think it could do very well. Many people will stick with it after trying it, its just a matter of getting them to try it. But it will definetly take some kind of an exopansion or something mayor before that would happen.

It would take not only that, but an expansion on the core game as well. More quests, contacts, everything, which is why it's more worthwhile to just trash the game and start over. To quote another player, this game was coded in stone, so SoE has a hard time with even introducing the smallest of updates. Ever wonder why the combat system is introduced to new bugs with each new patch?
The game exists now only as a resource to plug more funds into other SoE projects, all the while doing as minimal a job as possible in order to keep the game running.
If they started over, I would definately look twice. Hell, give me a game taking place during the cycle BEFORE Neo... I think THAT would be a bad-ass MMO in it's own right, too.
I've played this game from the begining and i was even one of the first beta testers. I quit shortly after the main story started going south and wasn't as interesting anymore. I will say this about the game, my beta and early launch days were some of the best experiances i've ever had in an MMO! Not just because of the events they did but for the close knit RP community, I used to enjoy just going to the clubs and dancing it up with the people there while listening to the player djs on the MxO radio stations. The big problem though with MxO is the only real content they had was the ongoing storyline and LIVE GM events which made the game fun to login to and play. However there wasn't much player interaction with those storylines beyond solving riddles and finding where a specific character is gonna be. I do remember one time the entire community voted on an outcome for this one story, the problem with that was it turned out different on each server so when they started future story archs that one character from the previous arch wasn't around.
Now i'm sure anyone who's run a player event or huge social gathering in an MMO knows how much planning goes into those events. For a time that was an acceptable excuse for MxO until $OE took over and the Live Events started to loose their spark. $OE even fired Monolith's Live Events Team becaus they were gonna run the events themselves, what a load of crap that turned out to be. Not only were the events seriously lacking but the storyline slowed down to a snails pace and there was barely any player involvement at all. There was no new exciting content and the story missions weren't very interesting.
But in the end like many people, what held me in the game was the close knit community and exciting(although not very fullfilling) player events that they would hold. If $OE had put just even a fraction of their mass wealth into this gam then it could've been one of the best games out there. Now all they got is a unique combat system which tends to get stale after countless hours of pointless PvP.
All with dedicated dj's playing requests all night long.
I had been playing since launch, and only finally cancelled my acc at the start of the year. Months before that I kept it open for the occasional duel with friends and parties.
As i've always said, I strongly believe MXO should be remarketed as a 3d chat client. Unfortunately its not enough to keep real gamers playing.
Its unique in the aspect that you can really roleplay yourself in a young, handsome/beautiful body. RPers dream.

Fat chance, they've sacked most of the developers for this game, there used to be around 10 servers, now theres 3 or 4, i dunno..
By shutting down there servers, running on skeleton staff just to fix bugs and minor upgrades, there profit margin increaes even though they have a very small playerbase.
MxO is a dead end, SOE know better than to flog another dead horse (SOE spend alot of money advertising Starwars galaxies over and over which did nothing really but loose them cash).
I think SOE figure out what gamers hate: meddlesome behaviour from the devs. Fixing bugs is one thing, but tinkering around with people's classes, crafts, and eventually their gameplay isn't the way to win people over. Also, sacrificing the wants of current customers in an effort to bring in more is like, the worst way to go. At least for the MO team, they're leaving well enough alone. All i can say is that the SWG department in SOE needs to learn a lot from the MO AOE team.
I played MXO ever since the morpheus friends trial. I stop right when my Faction fell on the syntax server. Me and a few people were the last ones to leave. I didnt like MXO after a while due to it being difficult for me to find events happening. The RP seemed dry after a while and the gameplay was repetative as hell. I dont think this game will be worth coming back to at least for another five years.
Alot of people post about SOE as if they enjoy ruining games and losing players. This is a rediculous point of view. SOE has made many mistakes and have payed dearly for it. They know this. It is not their intention to drive players away from their games because obviously that means less money. I think things will iron out with SOE with time. How much time? Its hard to tell. My guess is about 5-10 years. Just remember they are trying to make the games they take in more fun. It seems their biggest issue is finding ways to balance games. Hopefully they get through that barrier.
This is matrix, not star wars. Lots of SOE haters go to forums and badmouth games they've never played because SOE made a mistake with their star wars game.
Are you a Pavlovian Fish Biscuit Addict? Get Help Now!
I will play no more MMORPGs until somethign good comes out!

Hehe very true and whats worse those same people cant seem to let go of the fact..scary it really is.
Well It seems to me that SOE is not trying to ruin mxo but it looks that they have more or less given up on the game, they don't advertise the game at all, they don't try to fund it and if they really wanted others to try it out and buy it then they would probably have come up with something better than a half assed buddy trial email promotion, which most people didn't even receive. Now it just looks like they just want to use it to fund their other games in development. With more and more veterans like Ic3b3rg and Zippy leaving the game every month its less likely that the game will last very long without the full support of SOE.
Second of all I think only one person was talking about star wars in this whole thread, almost everyone else who commented in this thread are known veterans who had played this game for at least a year or more and have had it with the matrix online and yes I've also played this game for more than 2 years.
They seem to rarely fix anything, and mostly just make things worse, talking about more than just Mxo though. I can't even play my trial account because of some common "account in use" problem, and they seem to be ignoring my help request in their support section (was made friday at 11:50am btw). It seems like people get an easy fix from someone on the forums but I'm not even capable of posting on them or PMing. I wonder if it's because I'm not giving them money, trying to quell the hate speech from people who aren't currently addicted to one of their games?

QFE on all that, there's a reason why there's alot of SOE haters not not because of SWG- there's a high demand for EQ classic and SWG classic as well. PlanetSide has fallen and MxO isn't holding out too well either, SOE simply are not putting enough effort into their hosted games with no advertisement and very little customer appreciation from the deve.
As stated above, the station pass is what keeps these games alive, PlanetSide is struggling with subs right now and there's a deomand for merging 3 servers, which once was 7 servers (Jackson closed down 2 weeks after live launch). Only game I ever seen in stores these days is EQ2 and there's not many of those either.
I have played PlanetSide, SWG, EQ2 and MxO and I loved PlanetSide until they introduced BFRs and loved SWG until they fooled me for the second time with the NGE. I couldn't stand MxO's gameplay and I'm not a fan of fantasy genre that EQ2 (and WoW) has.

You are actually on the right track there, they wont answer any of your customer support emails if you only have a trial account. I had problems on two trial accounts and they never got back to me. Finally I tried to use the live chat feature but all I got was a generic statement saying "we understand your concerns, thank you very much".
I decided to use my friends account to see if they would answer the customer support emails for her and they did, almost an hour or two after it was sent.
see the thing is sony used to be the big dog on the block with evercrack and as such they would down play any game that would give it some compition. Now that sony is no longer the the lead brand (thanks to WoW) these bad buiness practices are catching up to them
Would you happen to have a buddy trial key that you could pm me so that I could try this game out for myself and let me decide whats going on with it? I'd like to see first hand.
The Matrix Online was my first MMO, I brought it because I wanted to play an Agent. I went to gaming stores to try to find a copy of it, and I even heard that the servers has been shut down and I was too late. However I didn't believe him. I went online and found MxO's home page and to my joy the servers were still up. I ordered my copy of the game (which I still have) and a game card. Hell I even brought a new video card so that I could at least play moderately well on it.
I was so excited when I first jacked in, so much to do, so much to see, and events! Oh my Gods the events! I joined in right at the beginning of the first anniversary and of the spawn of the sleepwalkers! I got even more excited when I started to meet characters from the Matrix inside the game! Sure they were Devs playing characters, but in my mind, the 4th wall was never broken.
Pretty soon I was hyperjumping and running all over MegaCity. Gray wanted my help with Anome and his Unlimits, the Bag Lady wanted help. There was endless things to do, endless players to see! Every corner, every crook and nanny of this city was unique and so was this game. I even took part in Beta-testing CR 2.0, which I got a cool hat for. I thought this game would always be supported.
Then after CR 2.0, you started cutting out things from us. You started taking away Devs like HCFrog and Walrus (true Walrus did come back), leaving Rarebit to run the game himself. Then Chadwick quit after the Unlimit Arc. I never cared for Chadwick's writing style, I thought they were too comic-book-ish, however he was a link between MxO and The Wachowski Brothers. That was a very important link because what Chadwick wrote was Canon.
Ok, so we've taken a few hits, and maybe after awhile things will get better. Maybe SOE will re-establish that all important link with another story teller, maybe they'll swing another dev by us. Nope, the cuts just keep coming. We didn't have an animator or whatever else was needed, so Rarebit had to recycle content. Which I thought he excelled at. I mean Rarebit was a very talented guy, he could do very much with very little!
I want to talk about Rarebit for a minute here. Now it's true that when he was the last Dev here, he became the focus point of all our anger, rage, disappointment, , etc. We didn't like what he was doing with the storyline, we let him know it, and Gods did we. We didn't like the recycled content, and once again, boy did we let him know it. However, I do have to hand it to the man. When SOE wasn't responding to us, he did. When SOE didn't answer us, he did. He wrote the story after Chadwick left, he created "new" content. Like I said, he did much, with little. He was a divider, and a uniter. I'd hate to think that he quit because we ran him out. I hope he has no ill wills towards us, because I don't think any of us has any ill wills towards him.
Anyways, so we're left with Rarebit, LESIG 2.0, and Walrus who checks in on us once in awhile. Ok, so things didn't look like they weren't improving, but at least we were leveling out. At least we still had what counted in the MxO universe. A continuing storyline, Dev, Org Liaisons who created side stories (Viracondra was the best IMHO), and missions etc. Sure we had the Cinematics cut and then replaced with the shadow of it's former self. However, it seems SOE like to kick a community when it's down.
Rarebit quits, which was a shocking news for all of us. He spelled out his storyline all the way up to Chapter 14, in which I think was suppose to be the end game. After this, many people of the MxO Community sent out letters, e-mails, we wrote on the forums, we contacted Walrus, we tried everything to talk to you. We wanted to make sure that we were going to get a break, that another Dev would be found. However, all we got back was silence. We never could break that wall of silence. We didn't even get anything from Walrus until now.
Then we got the news, all MxO servers goes dark on July 31st, 2009. The Matrix Universe will end. This is what broke the wall of silence. Not we're getting an Intern Dev, not that this game will contiune at a reduced price, not that we're merging Three Servers into One. All of these options we would hate, but we would've accepted. No, it's that y'all are closing the servers down.
You know, I really really would like to know why now, why not right after Rarebit quit? It's obvious now that y'all weren't going to refill his position. Hell, even after he quit, some of us tried to create smaller community stories. I know my faction Familia Grigori make it's own RP, and I tried to get something going. What was the deciding factor to finally close the servers? Will you tell us, probably not, which goes right along with your track record with us at MxO.
Remember back at the top of my letter? When I described my excitment and joy about jacking into the Matrix Online? This was after SOE has taken over, fired most of the Devs and PET. See, instead of investing in MxO, instead of putting a little money into it, y'all decided to lock it in the closet and feed it left overs from other games. It's amazing we lasted so long, and it's no wonder why we're now going dark. We're not going dark because the community failed, we're not going dark because we were a financial sinkhole, we're going dark because of you SOE. We're going dark because you refused to invest in us, we're going dark because you apparently don't understand simple concept like Customer Service, or To make money, you have to spend money.
So, why even take MxO from Monolith? Why even take a game that you weren't going to invest in? Were we nothing more than stepping stones for DC Universe MMO for you guys? Is that why y'all kept us around for so long? If that's the case, then that means you only dated us so you could sleep with our sister.
I will tell you this SOE, you will never find another community like MxO's. We are a loyal, dedicated, and tight community, we never say die. Sure we have our fights, and we have our disagreements, but when push comes to shove, we always band together. Good luck finding that in EQ, Plantside, SWG, or any other games you have, or will have. Thanks to your inactions, you have lost a large percentage of us as customers after July 31st. You certainly have lost me.

Yes.
Mxo parties were the best thing about the game!
Faction parties, birthday parties, event parties.
The occasional combat tournaments.
My bachelor and wedding party :P
All with dedicated dj's playing requests all night long.
I had been playing since launch, and only finally cancelled my acc at the start of the year. Months before that I kept it open for the occasional duel with friends and parties.
As i've always said, I strongly believe MXO should be remarketed as a 3d chat client. Unfortunately its not enough to keep real gamers playing.
Its unique in the aspect that you can really roleplay yourself in a young, handsome/beautiful body. RPers dream.
IF SOE have done such a great job, why aren't they still advertising the game like they did with Starwars Galaxies.
Matrix trilogies drawed audiences bigger than starwas fans when the movies came out.
Two of the biggest movies liciences EVER in this ERA to be made into MMORPG, and both got many things in common,
disgruntled veterans, sparesly populated servers.
Both belong to SOE lol

May I just add this in...

Worth knowing that indeed it looks they gave up on game.
They haven't even tried to fix MXO and 8xxx Nvidia cards problems in 6 months. And even admitted they don't have staff to do it.
Decide your self if it's worthy going for that MMO while it's in SOE hands?

They seem to rarely fix anything, and mostly just make things worse, talking about more than just Mxo though. I can't even play my trial account because of some common "account in use" problem, and they seem to be ignoring my help request in their support section (was made friday at 11:50am btw). It seems like people get an easy fix from someone on the forums but I'm not even capable of posting on them or PMing. I wonder if it's because I'm not giving them money, trying to quell the hate speech from people who aren't currently addicted to one of their games?
Dear SOE,
The Matrix Online was my first MMO, I brought it because I wanted to play an Agent.

Yo
LOL. after the tens of thousands they lost after nge , i think they will not sweat couple hundred people left . I beta the game before soe got it , it sucked then too.
I love SOE dont care about what they did to SWG as i never played it. The legendary EQ and EQ2 are imo the best MMO's to date. WOW ane everyother quest based MMO are EQ clones. Flame away boys i wont be around anyway i will be playing EQ2.
