Graphics and control wise Hellgate London is better than TR, open space larger enviorments TR has Hellgate London. Which game is more ready for launch than the other, TR.
This is easily the funniest comment I've heard all day. I've been in the Tabula Rasa beta before I un-installed, and am currently in the Hellgate:London beta, and to say Tabula Rasa is more ready for launch than HGL is quite the joke.
Darkfall is more ready for launch than Tabula Rasa.
Both games are going to disapoint. Tabula Rasa is exactly like Guild Wars but every instance you travel into is persitant meaning there are people in every zone you instance to. The massive part to Hell Gate London is really stat tracking and item saving. Urban Enviroments with stringed lobbies along the path of the storyline for people to form groups and actually see who is in the room multiplayer. In the majority of the game there is instanced small zones with the ability to see people chatting in your chat window. Both games seem targeted at the 16-18 year old markets. These are not the games you take off work for, so obviously that translates to what? You fill in the blank. Graphics and control wise Hellgate London is better than TR, open space larger enviorments TR has Hellgate London. Which game is more ready for launch than the other, TR. Sadly I come to the conclusion we are out of luck for a while untill something Huge like WoW,SWG, or Eq2 launches. Non of these games up until this date have the scope and magnitude of the 3 I just listed. Very small scale is the feeling you get right away. The calm before the storm is what I am trying to illude to, there isnt one. I watched a guy at a internet cafee demonstrate the game that is why I am aware of this information. I pre ordered both games, currently looking into how to cancel the orders Trash thats all we get...... AoC is our only hope
You're talking out of your arse, sorry.
They are not marketed at the same group of people, by far. HGL being a sort of spiritual successor to Diablo 2, meaning a loot whore action game, with TR being a story oriented MMO.
Also i think it's a bit unfair to market HGL as a MMO at all, because it really isn't. Sadly marketing it as a MMO means it WILL get compared with MMOs and recieve bad reviews because of it, even tho it doesn't really fit into the genre at all. Sigh.
Not looking for an argument, but HGL does have what I'd call a "Multiplayer Element" it's not a true MMO. So does that mean it does or doesnt compete with TR? Well, I think it depends, I much prefer an MMORPG, however TR has done very little to impress me, in fact, I'm pretty disapointed with it, so with my dime I''ll give HGL a whirl.
I expected TR to be so much more than what it is, especially with Richard Garriotts name attached to the project. I expected to see genuine progress and evolution within the genre, but I kind of felt I was seeing more of what the last 10 years have already done. Granted, I only put 30 or so hours into the game, but if I spend that long on a game, it should have grabbed me, and TR just never did.
Will HGL grab me? Probably not, but it seems like a decent time waster that will satisfy my desire to play an RPG online with some friends, and play a little bit of game on my own. I'll be awaiting March '08.

That makes me a sad panda
I hope you are wrong, but as I hinted in a previous post; as long as there are games in development, there will be a hype. Although I think we are being more careful these days.
Another thing, personally I don't ask for a game which has the magnitude of those three you mentioned. I just wan't something that is entertaining enough so I can play it with my friends for a couple of hours a day to clear my head before I go to sleep. I don't ask for much. I want it bug-free, lots of action and easy to learn but difficult to master.

Read my post at the end of page 3 tbh.
Also no, as far as i know HGL is bugged a lot, but the game works. TR is going through a major combat rebalancing right now and is bugged to hell too.
I beta tested TR. I went into the game with an open mind and tried very hard to enjoy it. The graphics and animations were bad, the controls felt awkward, and it just wasn't very interesting.
I'm also beta testing HG:L. The NDA is still in effect, so I can't say much, but I will say that I am enjoying it. If you liked Diablo 2 you won't want to miss HG:L.
I'm not sure they are directly competing with each other as they are very different.
TR - is getting a really bad rap and as a former beta player I think its deserved. People say it has "fps elements" i dont understand that its wow with guns and instead of spamming 1,2,3,4,5,6 your just spamming the mouse button, yay.
HGL - havn't played it but it looks much more 'twitch' and its made by the diablo people. I'm deffinetly giving it a shot and no monthly fees is a bonus. Not sure exactly how "mmo" its going to be tho.

The 'MMO' aspect will come from how well they implement the ongoing online features to Hellgate. Either way you can go online and play with friends for free, but if you want the added extra areas, armor, weapons, classes, and other goodies.. youll need to fork over 9 euros a month, which is cheaper then most mmo's atm.
I think it will be the proof in the pudding after the first content update though.
I've played both and i have to say that hellgate london wins by a long shot. When i logged into TR id find my self doing the wow grind with awkward controls. Kill this many of this if no one else has killed them already. Spawn camping very anoying.
On the other hand I have fun in hellgate im afraid thats all i can say due to NDA. But it is a great game.
I found the TR beta just another grindfest, it doesn't even feel like an MMORPG and it is very overhyped. It also lags like crazy.
It has nice graphics, but it's going to take a lot more than that to attract people away from WoW. Which is where almost all the MMORPG gamers are currently.
There's no question that Tabula Rasa is more prepared to launch than Hellgate. The Hellgate client is horribly unstable, involving some very nasty crashes to desktop and complete system crash bugs ( which I haven't personally experienced, but friends I play with have frequently).
They're both good games, but I think TR has more going for it.
TR is way more ready for launch then HG. TR is pretty damn solid and never crashes or has any major problems. HG on the other hand crashes for me probably at least once and hour and sometimes more. If it lasts an hour or so it runs out of memory. Unfortunately it also freezes, sometimes where I can get back to windows and sometimes where I need to reboot... Sometimes the instances are wierd where mobs act like they can't see me and I can't attack them. Sometimes invis mobs attack me that I can't fight and on a couple instances the portal to get out of the instance was gone and I couldn't even summon a portal...
All that is from a couple evenings playing.... Personally I can't believe they are shipping HG it could be a great game but with all the bugs currently they are going to loose a lot of customers and probably gain a bad rep. Shocking coming from the team that worked at blizzard which is virtually the definition of solid well polished bug free games...
For all that HG is a lot of fun and beats TR in my book hands down on fun.
played both quite a bit, and sadly they are both a let down.
What it comes down to is the experience you want. Hellgate london will cost more money for your time, in a not so MMO style of play. Its about cramped dungeons that are as repetative as a checker board. Hellgate london also has conflicting design elements which alienate the user.
One being that FSS admitted they do not like the whole EPIC feel of a game, and thus wanted it to be more of a Shaun of the Dead kind of game. Only problem is, the setting is EPIC. Players expect epic.
So then what happens when you try to take away epic from an epic senario? You have peanutless peanut butter.
This is one reason why they were pretty much forced by the fans oppinions to remove a large portion of the voice overs from the beta.
Overall, you do not feel like you are playing the role in HGL. It cost more with its fee, plus constant expansions you have to pay for, plus you have to deal with the in game ads, and its not even an MMORPG, and a questionable MMO if even that.
On Tabula Rasa's side you have a very basic game, with great art direction, visuals and sound. You along with hundreds of other players can occupy outposts and maps, and thus it begins to become a MMORPG. It really feels like you are in a war zone fighting for a greater cause.
Again the game is simple in nature, but far more immsersive and far more MMORPG, thus worth idea of a subscription. It will cost less in the bigger picture to play Tabula Rasa, and it will have a greater PVP play than HGL.
Over all, it was not the best MMORPG on the market, but better than HGL in terms of time and money, and in my opinion funfactor.
Both games offer crafting. In HGL you craft by disassebling items you dont need, and then going to an npc that has an item you want. You then trade the resources for that item. So its more of a purchase system than actual crafting.
In TR you need a recipe or schematic, and then the mats, and then you use a machine to craft it.
Big difference between the two. One is fake crafting, the other is more true to its name.
With tabula rasa it does not appear you have to be affraid of them data mining your computer and giving you adverts in the manner that HGL does.
My opinion, play Tabula Rasa and wail till one of the real waiters comes out. WAR or AoC.
actually HG does have crafting like TR also. There are recipes that drop just like TR that you can turn around and make. however there are no crafting skills so it is really about collecting resources.

Cobane has know idea what hes talking about if he thinks that TR is going to have a bettter release the Hellgate.
Sounds like very thorough research to me...

HG:L all the way!!!!!!!!!!
My money's on HGL. I trust the ex-Diablo crew far more than the guy who made MMORPGs into timesink grindfests.
On a side note, this thread has spawned some highly entertaining quotes
jesus!
how can you dare compare HG with TR?
definately HG wins!
Exactly, two VERY different games aswell.
And yeah HG anytime.
the real question is what game would u rather spend ur money on. comparing them really doesnt work.. they are two different genre of games

TR is terrible.
Cant compare the two.
HGL is aimed at the FPS audience while TR is more for the RPG audience.
TR playing FPSnerds complain you cant aim correctly and the RPGnerds playing HL complain its to fast to much of an FPS and too little RPG in it.
Cant compare.

Had more fun playing the demo to Hellgate then beta of Tabula Rasa.
