My Opinion about TR

cdnJynxcdnJynx Member Posts: 10

Just my 2 cents About the game:

been playing TR beta for some time. played back when it was closed beta for a bit now again in the new "open beta" i guess you can say.

While I was playing, glancing at the chat while i shot some bugs and thrax soldiers  I noticed a lot of people saying  "oh this is like this or that or this game and that game"

Its a mmorpg  theres going to be similarities, and to the people who are like "this is'nt that game or this game" they are using those games as a reference point to which they become to know  and known as a staple in the mmo industry

Now on to the game :

The game is  indulging different pace/style of gaming that I've been playing  ( gw wow eq2 etc)  fooled around with some options to better suit myself and as I played changed some more .  to a post i've read  about story and how humans fled  earth.. if u actually pay attention to the lore, humans were caught off guard were not fully ready for the invasion of the Thrax/Bane and to better prepare the Goverment took who could fight and prep to make a stand against them - that is my understanding  of how I got the story  could be wrong could be right or close or not at all everyone takes things differently

Graphic were appealing smooth (with my settings) and no real visual hiccups/glitches in plain or anything

Lag  apposed to the constant complaints I for 1 never got more then a spike once and a while which in mmo's i can understand and in beta even more

I choose the path to lead to sniper as my goal ... as I played I tired new guns and new items and skills "testing" things out  reporting any broken quest or anything I felt was an issue as I have done in other beta testing I have done in the past, as I played  andacquired more skill points and new skills the game became more tactical  in my eyes, no longer a run and gun and kill before I got killed, I learned that cover actually saves a bit of damage if not block it totally that each npc/mob I encountered was weak to different guns  yeah I can just keep shooting with my physical rifle or I could switch to a different  and kill it much quicker

Biggest thing I encountered was the Netgun change (nerf)  it changed for a reason, it was way overpowered.  I could shoot a mob/npc with it once run around while i reloaded and shoot another by that time the first one i shot would be close to dying if not already dead. Yeah I enjoyed the pure damage I was dealing but knew to enjoy it while it lasted.

I branched around with few other classes and talked to others that devoted their time to  others and everyone of them had some pros and cons for that class and others they noticed in comparison, Others pros were others cons and vice versa so game play its a big thing on how you play and what skills you choose to use... I'm sure theres going to be those "cookie cutter" builds/templates what ever to get the job done and that everyone tries or follows in their playing

Voice over in the game was excellent I really enjoyed them compared to reading the mission I was about to receive. other voice oriented  things was the  incoming radio transmition missions  new and  really found them a new twist.  Foreas Base   annoucements were also really enjoying to hear aswell as comical while relaxing in the tavern.

To Wrap this little post up which really is not really all that little up, I found the game really enjoyable and look forward to launch and what more can become of the game, there will be the haters the fanboi's and the normal in every game this one is'nt and exception

I just begun to play the beta (5 hours) and i havent had this fun in a MMO for a long time. The pace and system is "new" and it feels really good.

So now i cant wait to see some more then the "noob" areas. I bet it wont be less entertaining.

    The game rocks :)

People will try to tell you that you are too low level to make a decision yet... or to "come back when you're 25 and tell us how you like it", etc... That's all BS. If you are having fun than you are having fun, that's what it's all about. We're all men and women enough to step away if we ever aren't having fun.

This game is very busy with people that are having too much fun that they simply don;t want to waste that time hanging out in forums. The vocal minority that hated the game are on the boards... which is usually the case.

This game isn't Auto Assault, it's not dying in a year or two, it's not going to flop in initial sales, it's a ton of fun and it will do fairly well out of the gate and ramp up through the holidays.

People will point out the low number of servers at launch as a reason for demise... I say BS to this as well. I mean, GW had so many servers, right? Oh wait... no it didn;t. And GW was a major flop, eh... oh wait, no it wasn't. In TR ever zone and area is instanced. Not privately instanced, mind you, but instanced like the towns were in GW. So one server can hold a LOT more people than a non-instanced game.

Like I said, the majority of people that are playing this game are happily playing and not hangiong out on message boards. The vocal minority are unhappy, which they completely have a right to be... but they are still the minority.

The game is a ton of fun to a lot of people. You can either take peoples word for it or make up your own mind. Is it perfect? Nah. Does it have some bugs? Yep. Are they game breaking, not in the least. Will it compete with WoW? Nope but i was not meant to.

What it is... is a fast paced hybrid MMO with a lot of action and a great story. Performance is great and the servers are stable. Quests are fun and feel meaningful. Clan War PvP is fun. Ambiance is top notch. A beautiful world to explore.

Now back to playing ;) I've spent way too long here as it is :)

Is there "whiners" on some official TR beta forum?

If there is, i must tell them how fun it it to play insted of whine on that forum.

  • CzechCzech Member Posts: 42

Finally some people that got their things straight, thinking about the fun time that the game can provide.

You're not afraid of the dark, are you?

Thanks to the OP for such an insightful post.  I can't agree more.

I know there will be "nerfs" (thanks SWG for the phrase), and balance issues - but that's to be expected.  But I can honestly say that I've had a heck of a lot of fun in beta.

I pre-ordered a couple weeks ago, and not sorry that I did.  My playtime for any games recently could be classified as less-than-casual due to my real life responsibilities - but in playing TR, I can play for an hour and feel I've accomplished something - not play for a day or two - then come back in and easily start again where I left off.

    See you all in live!

If you are asking if there are people vocally critical about the state and nature of the game on the official beta forums, given the propensity of the moderators to ban people for vocally stating the problems the game is suffering from, and decrying the ludicrous decisions the devs have made since June regarding the overall problems with balance, gameplay, and galling shallowness, then probably not.

I've a feeling that the official beta forums are only populated by fanbois and mods by now.

and if you are considering climbing onto  your soapbox and testifying to the greatness of TR to said vocal detractors, don't bother. We've been there, played it, and found it not only wanting, but not worth the asking price.

If they were to use the GuildWars model, "buy the box, play forever", then TR would be worth purchasing, but given the state of the game and the woeful inadequacies that have gone ignored for months, it simply isn't worth wasting 15 bucks a month on.

Perhaps in 3-6 months it might resemble a full-blown, mature product that is not only ready for prime time, but worth the asking price, but right now?

    MEH!

I don't like to piss on games, but I gotta agree that Tabula Rasa is painfully shallow, and that the devs didn't take nearly enough risks on this one.  If they would have gone further with the FPS aspects - added hit boxes for headshots, lets say - that would have been a gutsy move.

As it is.. Run, shoot monsters, run some more.. Only, shooting monsters is incredibly boring.  Cover didn't work as of a week or so ago when I played, so it doesn't matter what distance you are from them.. so basically, run up into the middle of a group of monsters and mash the fire button repeatedly.  I don't think I got hurt the first 5 levels.

Classes seem very shallow and similar as well.  4 or 5 abilities are all that separate a spy from a commando - and with the game as painfully easy as it is, no teamwork is required.

I hope this will help put an end to the idea that one game designer makes any difference at all when it comes to making a game as complex and time-consuming to create as an MMO.  Whether it is Richard Garriot or Brad McQuaid - unless they wrote the entire game themselves, who gives a sh*t who is in charge?  It takes an entire team to make a game.

The term nerf didn't come from SWG (nerf herders), it came from the 80s Nerf foam toys.  We used to say things like 'My +1 sword got hit with the nerf bat'.  And eventually it turned into the term you use today.

I had fun with TR for the first 5 hours too....but that fun dies when you realize that the game doesn't evolve past what you play right now.  The whole game is like a simplistic starter zone.

just to reply to some people ... i found cover to work really well  if not to stop dmg or to lower it .  by testing it i was getting shot by 1 mob constantly for 80's no change in good 20 hits....  went behind some sandbags and instantly went to 25-30's  and he got more misses and what not.. other way cover works is  LOS - Line of Sight  if they cant see you they cant shoot you..  i know people are going to say well the bullets flew around the corner... thats because the mob already shot and was locked on to you

i agree the game was a little simple at start, but the if your either out leveled in the area to make things easier you need a group or your going to take quite some time completing the mission(instance) solo with plentiful deaths and repairing

after a few patches they made the mob/npc's a bit tougher with changes to weapons armor and such yah it came a bit more challenging... after i got off foreas and hit the next area  it became a bit more challenging for me.. its a whole new planet and 20 lvls into the game but  after that it became fun and really challenging in my eyes...  (swg for example.... u could go to almost any planet get some buffs and pretty much kill anything - TR if ur 20 and the mob is 38 your going to get sent to the medic

    Off topic a sec:

Anybody have a clue if NCSoft are planning any sort of station pass type model for their games? I play the CoX games, so if they did have a pass method, I'd shell out for the TR box. But to pay $15 for TR itself a month isn't worth it to me.

Unfortunately, when it comes to a monthly fee, you are wrong. I agree fun is fun, but when I pay monthly for it, it better be still fun a few months from now. With TR, in the first few levels, the games was really fun. Once you hit around 25 or so, its incredibly boring and repetitive.

let me get this out of the way, the PO has horrible grammar *or was typing in a hurry or very enthused about the topic*

ok my points (please read ALL):

Personally I don't care for richard garriot for 1 single reason, not a personal issue, just a dissapointment that the Original UO *pre-anything* was as pure and close-to-perfect of a design as I've ever seen in an MMO or any Game for that matter, and changes formed it into the now garbage mmorpg's coming out monthly.

HOWEVER, having read this entire thread, and gathering information from the PLAYERS *not the company which btw turned me OFF early and long* I have decided that when I can spare the money I will give this game a realistic chance and allow myself the opportunity to possibly *and hopefully* enjoy it

Saved me from having to type this myself.  For me, it became boring a little sooner than level 25.  It's a good game for casual gamers that don't play every day, but for the hardcores and the semi-hardcores there's just not enough content.  My opinion anyway.

this is so much fun, its feels like too much fun to be having in an mmo

this could make a half decent action game

im only level 5 so it could go horribly downhill but ive had a blast so far!

I see your point but for me if a game is fun then I have no issues paying a monthly fee, if it ever becomes not fun then I won't pay it... it's that simple.

With that said, I have 2 characters over 25 and am still loving the game. It's not the slightest bit boring to me and I know of a lot of people that feel the same way that I do.

I'm not saying everyone should love this game, I'm just saying that folks should find out for themselves.

I've played almost every single mmorpg to date, mainstream and not-so mainstream, and MUDs for a long time before that... and TR is some of the best fun I have had in a game in a long time.

To each their own. I just hope people will have the balls to check it out for themselves and not fall for the hype/naysaying.

ive seen game cards at bestbuy that covers all their games idk how much or for how long though.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

As far as I know - you can buy a game card for any of their games and use it to pay the monthly fee on a different one of their games.

On the station pass type thing - they have certainly talked about it on a few forums over the last 12 months.

I am the reverse to the other poster. If they did - then I would buy COX - otherwise I dont have enough hours to play two games and pay for them both.

Not so - plenty of people complaining about lots of different things on the beta forums.

Its only the people whose repeated posts basically amount to 'This is a gilded turd' that get banned :)

    I completely agree.

I think its a great action game and I am happy to pay 50 cents an hour (after initial purchase) for my entertainment.

I played the beta aswell, i kinda liked it but theres one thing that i find just annoying and is why i wont play the game, i can shot a mob with 10 bullets and maybe 3 of them will show me dealing any dmg or when i go and melee, only 1 in 4-5 hits will registrer freaking annoying and i wont stand for it :P
