I'm not here to argue about it or call a person names, based on a game, I may or may not support (depends on how good it is). In my honest, humble opinion, I don't think this game will have the umph of "WOW" based on the small differences it will present once out (gathering from vidoe and developers marketing posts).
Again, I think the only thing different and this is my opinion will be the RvR aspect and the graphics of the game, I'm betting though that there will be a strong pull of the WOW (ripped off) from their online game by Mythic.
You have to understand that WoW was not originally built for PvP. WAR was built just for that... RvR. They are making a game that is more like DAoC but with way better engine, better graphics, better everything. From what I have seen so far this game will be more exciting on a day to day basis than WoW will ever be.
There are two main points to be made.
~ WoW "borrowed heavily" from Warhammer. This in not even disputed. Warhammer was, in fact, the inspiration for World of Warcraft.
~ As "morpho" says, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning is built for and based on Realm vs. Realm (tm) conflict. PvP in WoW was an add-on ... and afterthought ... and virtually inconsequential to the predominant PvE portion of the game.
Good point! How is WAR going to be better than DAoC?!
One really sweet thing in WAR so far is the fact that the bigger orcs can be catapulted into the air to get into keeps/castles. The first time I saw that I flipped out. >.<

Yes, and actually there are some things that already tell me that, in fact, WAR will be better than DAoC. Things that "bothered" me in DAoC and I think WAR will have solved these issues:
~ Players died too quickly and easily in DAoC. I always thought so. Two or three nukes (depending) or a couple melee crits on you (depending) and you were toast.
Example: I remember that if you got near a Sorcerer he had a nuke he could cast at 1.1 seconds recharge, you would be dead in 3.3 seconds! That's about enough time to say, "What the...?" and you finished the "... F**K?!" when you were DEAD!
~ Too much crowd control.
Example: If your realm ability was down to remove mezzes (5-min recharge), and you got mezzed the lenghth of the mezz would be OVER one MINUTE! Essentially, you just waited your turn -- helplessly -- to die from the assist-train melee guys. Sheesh.
~ Wanted to attack the enemy capital -- but couldn't. Was something we always asked for and wanted. WAR will ALLOW this! That's a big yippie!
~ Too much PvE content addition. The Number One reason where I think DAoC went wrong -- they added copious amounts of new PvE content -- Foundations, Shrouded Isles, Trials of Atlantis -- without significantly expanding the RvR content. They did add New Frontiers, but this simply replaced the "old" Frontiers (which players LOVED) with New Frontiers (which many players complained about).
~ Lack of Collision Detection. DAoC didn't have it. WAR will have it (in RvR). That's a plus. Can actually make the game more strategic.
~~~
Anyway, that's why I think WAR will be better than DAoC.
There will be more RvR opportunities, tougher player characters, less crowd control, and -- hopefully -- in the future they will add to the RvR content and PvE content EQUALLY.
The PvE portion of the game can be fun, but it's the RvR portion that, in my not-so-humble opinion, is the real meat-and-potatoes of the game.
i cant beleive no one has mentioned you get XP from killing enemy faction!
thats right boys and girls you can grind on PvP, also theres pvp from the word go, imagine if you could walk out of Brill into w/e the aliance equivalent is and punch a dwarf at lvl 5.
also all the clone talk is just shit, like its been said before everyone borrows a bit from tolkien, a bit from GW and a bit from anything else that has orcs and what not.
Omg, every single day I come here there's a new thread about WAR vs. WoW. Like for heaven's sake, this is a really stupid question. You are either gonna like it or not like it... If you think it's better then WoW, that's great, keep playing. If you don't then move aside and make room for people who are actually interested. But honestly, this has got to stop. And I'm sure I speak for a fair amount of people when I say that. So instead of asking other people why they think it's better, why don't you make your OWN decisions and decide that for YOURSELF!
Man I wrote that in like 30 seconds...I'm getting good at this
Butters88 you should get use to it,
IF War becomes as popular as WoW the Next MMO(tm) that comes out will be compared to War, and everyone on the NEXT MMO(tm) will tought its glories and get pissed at the people comparing it to War.
Same thing happened with EQ,
It was compared to DAoC, then it was compared to even EQ2 and WoW...
Its a never ending cycle, its the which is better: Chicken or Eggs?
And the answer always comes down to how much you like meat or dairy products...
So get use to the comparisons now, and just contemplate on what War will be compared to if its a huge hit.
Well, let me first state that a game can't really be better than another game as it is all a matter of taste.
For my taste this is how I think War will be better.
Wow had a lack of purpose except to level, War will hopefully fill me with more purpose by having RVR and RVR goals that will need to be met least your side be overwhelmed by the opposition.
These shared goals help bring the community together and make my time in the MMO enviroment more enjoyable. I am not the sort of person who just wants to kill other players, I need a purpose, I like to feel useful to the community around me.
Wow just wasn't engaging enough for me. The PVE got repetitive fast and the focus of the game was a little too light hearted. I also do not like the character models and the armor looks ridiculous to me. Pick up groups in almost all other MMO's I have played have often lead to friendships, while in Wow it has lead to wanting to log out.
So I hope War is more engaging and that the Public Quests, the Tome of Knowledge and RVR give me engaging things to do. The character models are a lot more to my taste. The lore is more interesting. The game while hopefully able to poke fun at itself, isn't quite as silly as Wow is all the time. Finally I think with public quests and shared RVR goals, the community spirit will be stronger and people will learn to work with other people, rather than learning at around level 60 when you finally get to the raid content.
That is how I think that this game will be better than Wow, nothing ground breaking, nothing amazing, just small subtle things that will hopefully have a huge effect on my time while in game.
<edit I don't want to bash Wow and I do not think that Wow is the worst game out there, it just isn't right for me.>
So far form the truth, you are going to cry when the truth hits alot of people hard.
Not a lot to go on.
Half of what I said was my impression of Wow, which cannot be so far from the truth, as it is my opinion of a game I still occassionally play.
I would have considered most of my expectations to be pretty moderate. I am not expecting the game to change my life by any means. If you wish to specify what exactly I have gotten so wrong we could actually have a proper discussion.
From what I know the game will have city seiges and victory points that need to be built up to seige the opposing forces city. This is a shared goal. These sort of goals did build community in DAOC.
The character models are more to my liking. I have had a reasonable amount of exposure to both Wow and Warhammer lore and I do find the Warhammer lore more interesting.
The only thing I think you could really put an argument to me would be that Warhammer is just as light hearted as Wow and I conceed that it could well be, but it will not make me cry if it is, not even post a rant.
Things that make me rant are when I like the game, but I cannot play due to server crashes or the customer support is crappy or I never get a group because I am Australian and play at the wrong times. I am just going to try AOC if War isn't something I like and if that doesn't work out I will be going back to EQ2, which is a game I really like, but I really don't like SOE.
I didn't cry when Wow turned out to be the biggest MMORPG disapointment of my life. (again just my experience)
i have a question what makes WoW so great? i mean come on it's simple and basic as it gets, if you are a hard core old school gamer you love and miss the hard games of the passed like eq when it came out and you had to run all over the place and wait for a boat, now its port here port there go go go i mean come on. only thing WoW is good for is teaching companies that if they dumb down there games they will have mass profits,
nothing wrong with them making money im all for that but i mean when i buy a game and its somthing i love i hate when the companies start to cave in to the people that cry about every thing ! "PVP is not fair the wizard spells hit me to hard" well really a wizard can kill you with one spell that is what wizards DO !! i mean come on when you change a game so you dont lose you forum cry babies you are killing the game for your loyal players that have been there from the start and who have helped you keep a game going for the starting years.
i'm so sick of people saying " well i don't want to work in a game after i come home from work" yes fine i undersand that and it's a good point but you don't have to work in a game if you don't want just dont craft, don't harvest herbs for potions... just pick up your weapon and go kill stuff not that hard, or "it takes to long to get to the place i want to go i have to run all over the place" well if you dont want to look at the nice landscapes and sky and lakes and forests in the game why are you playing ? what you just want to see flashing buffs and spell effects and get massive amouts of tresure for doing nothing ?? i mean come on !!
the problem for todays MMO is the companies caving in to the newer give me all now for nothing type of players and they don't care about the "older" gamer that werethere in the begining that helped them make the maket damand for the games. and how did we make the demand you ask well all the kids that play now where sitting by mom and dad's side watching them play there games and what about the kids that there parents never played games come from well there friends with kids that had them ...
firstly when i said i did not do TONS of reseach I meant what i said, not that I hadn't done any. I meant I do not know everything!
If someone can prove that RvR is not just PvP with cooler sounding name for gulable kiddies, i will be surprised. RvR IS in WoW, its called pvp. theres the alliance realm and the horde realm. both games have battlegrounds with objects etc. its the same.
the RvR in War is not like the PvP in WoW only way it would be is on the PVP servers of WOW where you can attack the main citys of the factions / realm. PvP is player vs player sounds more like a one on one duel or even small group battle type of game but RvR sounds more like army vs army type of gaming
I don't see the point in truly trying to explain to these posters that WoW and WAR are different. IF they think it is truly the same, don't pitch the game to them, they aren't the type of players we would want to play with. If he can't read the other 380572 topics on what makes these two games not the same, than that is on him.
Consensus, go download daoc's free trial (might need a credit card though) and play it for 15 days or w/e. You'll get a little idea of how rvr is different than just pvp (or wow's pvp) While we at it, explain how wow's end game (raiding) is different from eq1 (or eq2's) end game (raiding) and why is wow so much more popular? =p
PS: Wow is a good game because it's fun, for some people, same way as tetris (sp?) is fun. It's not nessessarily the conept that is fun, but the execution. (if someone showed you the concept for tetris, would you really think a game like that would be fun? Yet it was )
Originally posted by Consensus okay firstly when i said i did not do TONS of reseach I meant what i said, not that I hadn't done any. I meant I do not know everything! Gullible kiddies are people that think WoW's "world pvp" is actually RVR.
Ok to the OP I dont know what you'd consider better but any game where you can actually participate in world changing events that are not limted to just end Game players is way better than WoW to me. WoW's most well thought out content (as in content that everyone dies for) is all at the end. WAR's is all throughout.
I'm not going to worry about what others have posted, I'm not even going to be that detailed I'm just going to point out some things that obviously make me excited for WAR and what makes it completely different from WoW (and better).
1. RvR Its not just PvP. Yes you get to kill other players and yes you go on mission style battlegrounds (there's Open PvP areas for just killing the enemy too). But working as a team fully actually matters, the outcome of the battle doesn't get the individual player some fat peice of loot but it rewards your entire realm. The more wins for the realm the closer to taking complete control of that area and opening up the next tier of battles to get you one step closer to Sacking the enemy Capitol
2. Sacking the enemy capital - WoW promised this for ever and ever and ever and finally dropped doing anything new with it, infact you never actually 'control' the city you just killed a mob and players for rank and loot for maybe a couple of lucky players. in WAR when you sack the enemy capital (and from what I've understood anyone of any Tier can be there for the sacking) you actually take OVER the enemy capitol. You control it and the longer you control it the better the rewards are for everyone thats there. When you take over the capital people from the otherside can not respawn there they have to go as refugees to another allies capitol. Eventually things balance out and the guards & especially the players get more than enough buffs to throw out violently the invaders (there's been no time line of how long it takes specified).
3. The Tome of knowledge - It contains basically everything about your life in the game and if I remember correctly it contains all the knowledge of your skill sets too.
4. Skill trees - For once a game has the two types of play seperate meaning there are skills for PVP and skills for PvE so that things are balanced or more balanced than most games anyway. It'll be nice to know when they nerf a pvp skill it wont fuck up your pve skills...and vice versa. The skills (which you see a glimpse of in a recent pod cast) are HUGE..there's so many that you'll never have them all!! Its crazy huge skill trees. WoW's are tiny and constantly changing in the ever constant battle between PvP and PvE (the game was designed up front as a PvE game... and has had problems ever since PvP came more into focus).
5. Everything you do matters whether its PvE or PvP everything you do..every point you earn through either action gets you closer to the Capital Sacking no other game has this usually its one way or the other and only one leads to a certain way. Now both PvE'ers and PvP'ers are working for the exact same goal, destroying the enemy.
6. Level through PvP & Looting from a Loot table - granted its not open loot but that has been a turn off for some and controversial to say the least but its more than WOW! We dont know how the loot tables work but I'm guessing the more wealthy the player the more wealthy the choices of loot (atleast i hope!).
7. Public Quest System - If your into PvE this will be definitly knew & cool. while we're all familiar with open questing to some extent with some games random once or twice a year events that everyone can participate in this is new..and its constant and the longer you participate the more points you earn to spend towards a reward at the end. You can come and go as you please just as longas you particpated you get some credit.
8. No mor e killing critters to get somewhere and then finding an NPC that gives you a quest to kill more...thanks to your Tome of Knowledge I suspect it tracks everything you kill and how much as well. Thank you almight Warhammer gods...because I get so damn tired in games like wow of having to repeatedly kill creatures for multitudes of quests involving them.
9. Hidden Quests you find in exploration - there's not been much elaboration but it definitely makes it worth while to explore the lands on foot risking life and limb to see if you find anything cool.
ok damn it lunch break is up *trudges back to work* If you still think this game is not better than WoW your smoking crack.
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
In PvP you can do things that hurt or impede your race/teammates and it doesn't really affect you. There are no consequences there is no greater goal then getting kills or ranking yourself up. There is no real point to banding together and fighting the opposite side.
RvR is really the opposite. What you do or do not do has consequences on your race, or realm. So if you sit around doing nothing and your realm gets beat then you're going to be fighting to be able to sit around again. The fact that it will affect everyone brings everyone together. If there were space aliens about to destroy the world do you not think that the U.S. Russia, China, Isreal, Pakistan, etc would set aside differences for awhile and focus on killing the aliens? That is what RvR is really like. It brings everyone together for the common goal of winning.
There was some actual RvR in WoW on my server. It was when the AQ gates were put in and the horde wanted to get the key to open it. We would have 3-5 raids farming crap and helping kill the bosses and repel alliance attacks. As soon as AQ was over though it was infighting all over again.
And they'll flock back at the next expansion that WoW releases if the game isn't at least significantly better if only because WoW has the numbers thus people want to have experienced what other people are on about at least for a little ^^
Personally I feel Warhammer is just seems to get worse the more they release info on it ....
Scenario's (Instanced BG's) earning most Vict points.
Cross Server Battlegrounds (WTF)
Shared PvE (PvEing next to your supposed mortal enemy without being able to touch them )
Siege being very underwhelming considering it's mostly static
I mean, come on! In the very least it has me seriously doubting that Mythic has learned anything from the past MMO's.
WAR will have more pvp then wow. My biggest concern that it's not just more pvp but rather more complex, thoughtful,and enjoyable pvp.
Basically just giving us more quanity of pvp and not allowing for more quality in the pvp experance there could be a major problem.
The reason I am worried is becuase often when games try to market to mass geographic there tends to be a duming down of the game.
If the game has guildwars like complexity to each class then I will be totally stoked.
Dunno just worries I have for this game.
i'm so sick of people saying " well i don't want to work in a game after i come home from work" yes fine i undersand that and it's a good point but you don't have to work in a game if you don't want just dont craft, don't harvest herbs for potions... just pick up your weapon and go kill stuff not that hard, or "it takes to long to get to the place i want to go i have to run all over the place" well if you dont want to look at the nice landscapes and sky and lakes and forests in the game why are you playing ? what you just want to see flashing buffs and spell effects and get massive amouts of tresure for doing nothing ?? i mean come on !!
the problem for todays MMO is the companies caving in to the newer give me all now for nothing type of players and they don't care about the "older" gamer that werethere in the begining that helped them make the maket damand for the games. and how did we make the demand you ask well all the kids that play now where sitting by mom and dad's side watching them play there games and what about the kids that there parents never played games come from well there friends with kids that had them ...
okay
firstly when i said i did not do TONS of reseach I meant what i said, not that I hadn't done any. I meant I do not know everything!
If someone can prove that RvR is not just PvP with cooler sounding name for gulable kiddies, i will be surprised. RvR IS in WoW, its called pvp. theres the alliance realm and the horde realm. both games have battlegrounds with objects etc. its the same.
thanks for concept art, its not proof tho.
My blog:
the RvR in War is not like the PvP in WoW only way it would be is on the PVP servers of WOW where you can attack the main citys of the factions / realm. PvP is player vs player sounds more like a one on one duel or even small group battle type of game but RvR sounds more like army vs army type of gaming
I don't see the point in truly trying to explain to these posters that WoW and WAR are different. IF they think it is truly the same, don't pitch the game to them, they aren't the type of players we would want to play with. If he can't read the other 380572 topics on what makes these two games not the same, than that is on him.
Consensus, go download daoc's free trial (might need a credit card though) and play it for 15 days or w/e. You'll get a little idea of how rvr is different than just pvp (or wow's pvp) While we at it, explain how wow's end game (raiding) is different from eq1 (or eq2's) end game (raiding) and why is wow so much more popular? =p
PS: Wow is a good game because it's fun, for some people, same way as tetris (sp?) is fun. It's not nessessarily the conept that is fun, but the execution. (if someone showed you the concept for tetris, would you really think a game like that would be fun? Yet it was )
Gullible kiddies are people that think WoW's "world pvp" is actually RVR.
Ok to the OP I dont know what you'd consider better but any game where you can actually participate in world changing events that are not limted to just end Game players is way better than WoW to me. WoW's most well thought out content (as in content that everyone dies for) is all at the end. WAR's is all throughout.
I'm not going to worry about what others have posted, I'm not even going to be that detailed I'm just going to point out some things that obviously make me excited for WAR and what makes it completely different from WoW (and better).
1. RvR Its not just PvP. Yes you get to kill other players and yes you go on mission style battlegrounds (there's Open PvP areas for just killing the enemy too). But working as a team fully actually matters, the outcome of the battle doesn't get the individual player some fat peice of loot but it rewards your entire realm. The more wins for the realm the closer to taking complete control of that area and opening up the next tier of battles to get you one step closer to Sacking the enemy Capitol
2. Sacking the enemy capital - WoW promised this for ever and ever and ever and finally dropped doing anything new with it, infact you never actually 'control' the city you just killed a mob and players for rank and loot for maybe a couple of lucky players. in WAR when you sack the enemy capital (and from what I've understood anyone of any Tier can be there for the sacking) you actually take OVER the enemy capitol. You control it and the longer you control it the better the rewards are for everyone thats there. When you take over the capital people from the otherside can not respawn there they have to go as refugees to another allies capitol. Eventually things balance out and the guards & especially the players get more than enough buffs to throw out violently the invaders (there's been no time line of how long it takes specified).
3. The Tome of knowledge - It contains basically everything about your life in the game and if I remember correctly it contains all the knowledge of your skill sets too.
4. Skill trees - For once a game has the two types of play seperate meaning there are skills for PVP and skills for PvE so that things are balanced or more balanced than most games anyway. It'll be nice to know when they nerf a pvp skill it wont fuck up your pve skills...and vice versa. The skills (which you see a glimpse of in a recent pod cast) are HUGE..there's so many that you'll never have them all!! Its crazy huge skill trees. WoW's are tiny and constantly changing in the ever constant battle between PvP and PvE (the game was designed up front as a PvE game... and has had problems ever since PvP came more into focus).
5. Everything you do matters whether its PvE or PvP everything you do..every point you earn through either action gets you closer to the Capital Sacking no other game has this usually its one way or the other and only one leads to a certain way. Now both PvE'ers and PvP'ers are working for the exact same goal, destroying the enemy.
6. Level through PvP & Looting from a Loot table - granted its not open loot but that has been a turn off for some and controversial to say the least but its more than WOW! We dont know how the loot tables work but I'm guessing the more wealthy the player the more wealthy the choices of loot (atleast i hope!).
7. Public Quest System - If your into PvE this will be definitly knew & cool. while we're all familiar with open questing to some extent with some games random once or twice a year events that everyone can participate in this is new..and its constant and the longer you participate the more points you earn to spend towards a reward at the end. You can come and go as you please just as longas you particpated you get some credit.
8. No mor e killing critters to get somewhere and then finding an NPC that gives you a quest to kill more...thanks to your Tome of Knowledge I suspect it tracks everything you kill and how much as well. Thank you almight Warhammer gods...because I get so damn tired in games like wow of having to repeatedly kill creatures for multitudes of quests involving them.
9. Hidden Quests you find in exploration - there's not been much elaboration but it definitely makes it worth while to explore the lands on foot risking life and limb to see if you find anything cool.
ok damn it lunch break is up *trudges back to work* If you still think this game is not better than WoW your smoking crack.
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
PvP is not RvR and RvR is not PvP.
In PvP you can do things that hurt or impede your race/teammates and it doesn't really affect you. There are no consequences there is no greater goal then getting kills or ranking yourself up. There is no real point to banding together and fighting the opposite side.
RvR is really the opposite. What you do or do not do has consequences on your race, or realm. So if you sit around doing nothing and your realm gets beat then you're going to be fighting to be able to sit around again. The fact that it will affect everyone brings everyone together. If there were space aliens about to destroy the world do you not think that the U.S. Russia, China, Isreal, Pakistan, etc would set aside differences for awhile and focus on killing the aliens? That is what RvR is really like. It brings everyone together for the common goal of winning.
There was some actual RvR in WoW on my server. It was when the AQ gates were put in and the horde wanted to get the key to open it. We would have 3-5 raids farming crap and helping kill the bosses and repel alliance attacks. As soon as AQ was over though it was infighting all over again.
How will it be better?...honestly, I dont think it needs to be better than WoW...just different
The players will flock to WAR just for a change
Torrential
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
And they'll flock back at the next expansion that WoW releases if the game isn't at least significantly better if only because WoW has the numbers thus people want to have experienced what other people are on about at least for a little ^^
Personally I feel Warhammer is just seems to get worse the more they release info on it ....
I mean, come on! In the very least it has me seriously doubting that Mythic has learned anything from the past MMO's.
Having played both games I won't be buying WAR. Just waiting for WoW expansion. Which im sure will be timed to release at the same time as WAR,
