Eve will e going for a LOOOOOONNNG while because it is soo unique there is no other MMO like it end of story and if Eve does drop in numbers then there will be improvements made by CCP and there the numbers flow again
Eve is by far the best MMO of all time it is one of a kind and will have to be out done by something SUPER SUPER Spectaciler to make it die in the ass it will be there for a long time to come they just gotta keep up with Graphics and all the PC tech
i think i repeted my self there but meh, just stating how Unique it is
Eve is the only MMO to my knowledge to have hired a full-time economist to analyse market forces linked to production, mining and well pretty much everything connected to that sort of thing.
Coupled with an absorbing political situation with many players, both large and small; the ability to work as an industrialist, trader, miner, pirate, small-time ganker, big-time (in game anyway) kingdom leader (with luck, charisma and a lot of time) at any time you decide to; plus the fact that all action happens on a single server, allowing any action you do to affect everyone else playing in some way (butterfly effect), make this my favorite game.
Admittedly it has it's problems, mostly to do with bad lag in gangs over 100 or so and abominably dull POS warfare mechanics as well as something of a lack of good small-gang PvP because of an overabundance of capital ships in game but overall I love this game.
That said, should it close... I'd probably have a look at AOC since the city building and capturing system on there looks similar to the sovereignty-type system in Eve but I doubt anything out there could offer the same sort of depth and feeling of grandeur I get from Eve.
Please note these are personal opinions. You may think I'm an idiot for thinking like I do, but it IS how I feel and however people may flame isn't going to change that. I've found almost my perfect game in this one. Fix the GUI, implement walking in stations and on planets, somehow fix lag and this game WOULD be my perfect one, really.
I'd lament its loss, then wait for the release of Infinity : The quest For Earth, probably the only contender out there. Interim, probably try UO again.
Dunno... the graphics aren't as good as Infinity's look but Jumpgate: Evolution looks like it's going to be good too. From a gameplay perspective anyway. The original was always pretty decent, just suffered from really dated graphics and too small a playerbase. Mostly due to total lack of any kind of marketting.

I'm actualy just about to start playing EVE since all other MMOs just arent entertaining anymore. ( I have quite a lot of MMO experience )
But if it ended tomorrow, I think i would just start playing Shooters (Quake Wars is loads of fun) or maby go Pro with my GuildWars account (got all 3 but without GWEN).
I think alot of the EVE fanboys{ you know who you are} might just slit their wrists if EVE was to end, lol. Personaly for me cant wait for AOC and Pirates of the Burning Sea to come out. Most of the grandeur of EVE takes place in your mind. EVE is mainly point and click, check this video out for a acurate look at game play http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMSjd6HNQdY&NR=1 LOL
potbs instanced pvp no thx ... aoc wow for kids and if you don't think so why the button mash guitar hero like special moves deal ohh ya real depth follow the bouncing ball while mashing buttons mindlessly
at any rate.. i have played so many different mmo's.. simply put, and as many of your more experienced mmo players will agree. you can see a dumper months ahead of release.
EvE is definately special.. and imo the only game that will "dethrone" the universe of EvE would be EvE 2.
to answer the OP.. i enjoy the COX worlds.. and would even enjoy them more if the pvp were more active and indepth. As of now its just limp. Getting better.. but limp. The question refered to EvE ending tomorrow, and as such AoC, WAR and PoTBS are not out yet.
as for the future of any sort of competition to EvE itself?. i am looking forward on hearing more about this title. www.blackprophecy.com/ it does look somewhat interesting..

If eve died. id curl up in a ball & cry at all the years of invested time thats just been thrown out with the servers. Then I guess id try RUIN, PotBS, maybe FoM again as well as some of the other shiney new ones coming out. If nothing catches my attention (& my wallet) I guess id call an end to the MMO phase of my gaming life & move on, relishing the small saving id be making.
laugh & the world laughs with you, weep & you weep alone.
I would stop playing MMOs. EVE is the only MMO to ever hold my attention this long (year 2months) I would probably play X3 Reunion, or some other games I have floating around, and wait for spore.
This is a hard question for me because I think a lot of Eve is unique. But if I had to choose, I would wait for the release of Darkfall because it will have a similar automatic skilling system. However, it isn't even at the beta stage yet! So if you had to choose an alternative game, what would it be and why?
Why is that?
Can't tell if you're trying to be sarcastic or not but I'll take it as if its an honest question.
Things unique in EVE:
1) Invention... the ability to take an existing item and create a new item from it which has different stats, values, attributes and is generally a better item.
2) Exploration... the ability to go into space, using the skills you've trained, and find hidden areas to mine, fight, (or both) in.
3) The ability for players to actively influence the game map. Very few MMORPG's allow this and none allow it to the extent that EVE does.
4) Skill system. EVE's skill system is truely unique and other than UO is the only remaining game in which you can be anything, do anything your heart desires, without having to make 'yet another alt' as long as you are willing to invest the time required to learn the ability. EVE has no 'classes' only 'abilities' which anyone can train to learn anytime they like.
Those are the four biggies... there's more but that should at least give an idea why he said that.
I was just curious as to what EvE players would choose. However, when I ran across this, I had to respond. How many MMORPG's have you played? Just curious, because it doesn't sound like many. I am not insulting you, I am just saying that your claims are false.
Saga of Ryzom has a skill based system, DDO also allows you to be whatever you want, so does a handful of Asian Free games. EvE is unique in the way that you can auto-train skills, but a lot of people don't like that, because some people could advance faster with the amount of time they can afford to put into a game.
You've admitted that a few MMORPG's allow you to influence the game map, so technically this isn't a unique feature. Also, SWG still allows you to create items the way you describe. Every game has exploration, so that is nothing unique either. Every game has hidden areas that require you to use the skills you've trained in.
Really, the only unique things I see in EvE as an outsider is how you progress in the game, the complexity, and the fact that it is space based.
One thing I have to say is, the part about people with more time being able to advance because of the auto-train. That is false, because the person who doesn't play as much can still put on a skill that takes time and not play at all and still be training as much as the person who plays more.
Also, the exploration he is talking about, is using probes to find places that you cant get to without using the probes that sometimes have good mining and other cool stuff that can be useful. So, I would say that is different from many other MMOs.
"You've admitted that a few MMORPG's allow you to influence the game map, so technically this isn't a unique feature."
But not the way EVE does it. It is very unique in where you must build P.O.S. (Player Owned Stations) to gain sovereignty over the solar system and the sovereignty can be increased to greater levels like a constellation which is like 4 solar systems or more.
I used to play COH/COV alot, definatley a lot of fun even though as stated before the pvp is a little dull. Even now i still *ahem* consider going back to that
well after playing earth and beyond and starwars galaxies for years then trying WoW for 1 week and COV for a month i dont think i would play anymore MMO's until AoC came out and hopefully it would have enough depth/immersion to keep me.

Since we are playing the what if game, I'm going to what if in some more variables.
What if Eve ended tomorrow and what if Eve II came out?
Well, then looks like I'd be playing Eve II
I Reject your Reality and Substitute it with My Own!
I'd lament its loss, then wait for the release of Infinity : The quest For Earth, probably the only contender out there.
Interim, probably try UO again.

PS: I hope SOE dont screw the game making it to cheese.
