Now as for all of those saying Bioware doesn't have the bacground for an MMO... well Blizzard didn't either and look at how well they're doing? Ok, yes they did have battlenet with Warcraft, but when you get to the nitty gritty of it, Battlenet was really more of a glorified chatoroom where you could just play one of the maps for competitions, but it hardly qualifies as MMO experience. I think it would most closely resemble those chatrooms on Yahoo where you could play chess while chatting. Only your playing one of the maps from warcraft.
Oh one more thing Kyleran, I hardly doubt we'll be waiting untill 2012 considering that they've already stated that they've been working on it since 2005 AND that it was already in a playable state. I suspect maybe late 2009 or early 2010 IF and only IF what they said in those interviews was true.
I'd expect a sandbox-type MMO at least equal to pre-cu SWG as far as number of professions, mixing profession skills, having huge expansive worlds to explore and build homes/cities on, and NON-COMBAT professions are a must - or I will not waste my money on the game.
One thing I'll say... considering the volume of rumors/speculations and evidence that we find supporting a KOTOR MMO. It makes me wonder if Bioware would try to do a different MMO just to get us angry lol! I think it would end up being negative publicity if their MMORPG ended up NOT being a Star Wars one. Because of all the hype & rumors around it being KOTOR online, they would have divulged that it was just an IP MMO rather than keep people in suspense.
BioWare has already said their MMO isn't a sandbox.
And EA can easily exert influence on the MMO, but putting one of their people in charge of the project instead of the current lead. There are ways around corporate contracts.
KatanAlpha you're right and it would definetely show. It happened with South Park as well, so I have no reason to doubt that SW fans would also go crazy if they pulled a prank like that. However, while there is still a lot of eveidence pointing to a KOTOR:O and by god how I hope it is, I'm also trying to prepare myself in case it isn't. What I really need to solidify it is an official announcement then I can jump for joy.
Bobfish, what you're saying is true, that IS one way to get around a contractual agreement, that would fall under the sleazy methods that I mentioned before. However, I still hold that Bioware could easily argue their way out of it, or at least restrict the influence of this EA employee.
Bane- you bring up a good point with contracts and the culture at Bioware- EA is a machine that may dominate the hell out of the Bioware culture which is a proven successful business model pre MMO production. But I am curious as to how EA may handle the "it's not done" ethics of Bioware which have helped make quality games and how it will influence Biowares MMO. Blizzard had 9 years of online games with warcraft and star craft to pull from. But EA doesn't impress me with on the MMO level. In fact your post sparks my memoriesof the same SOE NGE crap that was pulled on the Pre CU SWG staff a few years ago. And I do feel that Guild Wars is a MMORPG despite instances. I just do not view it as a traditional MMO. Mannn- this could be a great MMO or a complete failure. Either way if it is not a Star Wars MMO lets all host the E M U _lol- damn good topic!
I personally have seen nothing to indicate that EA would interfere, I don't think they are the big mean ogre that they used to be, simply because they've realised that the larger the market grows, the less crap the userbase will put up with. Sure, they still churn out buggy rubbish, but a couple of patches and it's usually up to being a pretty good title.
MMO wise, we'll see what happens with Warhammer, that's the measuring stick for how they might interfere with BioWare's MMO. Single player game wise though, I don't see there being anything to worry about in the immediate future.
Bioware is known for making RPG's. Just thought I would make a list of things that we are going to see at launch that SOE couldn't figure out till well into SWG's lifespan if at all. 1. Space battles- Star Wars and epic space battles go hand and hand. I wouldn't be shocked if we got personal ships, capitol ships, and a better space combat system than that JTL shit at launch. 2. A true Master/Padawan system, it's cannon it can't be ignored. This would be a great community feature and really immerse players into the game together. 3. A combat system that works, SOE still hasn't figured this one out. Something tells me that Bioware will get it right though. It will be turn based, and it will be deep. I mean cmon it's Bioware for christ sakes. 4. Players will actually effect the story of the game. KOTOR is pretty uncharted territory in the Star Wars universe leaving Bioware to weave a tale that everyone of us will be able to effect in one way or the other. Bioware will not be shackled by the cannon of the movies so it's gonna be a free for all:) 5. Now this one is a possibility but I'm not certain of it because few developers have the balls to do it. There is hope though considering alot of Pre-CU devs are working with Bioware Austin now. Skill based leveling. I think were going to see skill trees like we did in Pre-CU SWG and were going to be able to mix and match our templates again. The only reason this did not work in Pre-CU SWG is because SOE devs do not know how to code, balance, or test for a shit. 6. A true Jedi vs. Sith faction system........nuff said. Well thats all I can think of at the moment. I think the list above is definatly going to be in the game at launch. I mean cmon, it's not like SOE is developing the game or anything Post some of your ideas!!!!!!
Look, I want a new Star Wars MMO too... but how can you possibly guess at what will be included in a game that isn't even announced yet, from a company that's never created an MMO? That's like saying thew new Honda helicopters are going to be awesome because they're built by a company who builds quality cars. They've never built a helicopter before. Who knows how they'll do?
Your post is full of supposition, guesses, and quite possibly... pipe dreams.

What are you talking about? I already am flying my new Honda Helicopter and it's awesome! lol!
But in all seriousness I do agree that I don't know what to expect, but I am definetely hoping it will be better than current SWG (which shouldn't be a hard task for Bioware lol!)

There's no way to know if it would be better than SWG, becauseBioware doesn't make MMO's. We can speculate at how they would fare, but it's just speculation and it's pretty tough to base it on anything sinceBioware doesn't make MMO's.
One could hope that if they did, it would be good... but to speculate wildly on game specifics, like KatanAlpha did in his post, is just a waste of time and energy since the game itself doesn't even exist yet (and might never)! I'm hoping for the best like all the other Star Wars MMO fans out there... but seriously.

You are aware that... Bioware has an MMO in development, right?

I'm aware that something is in development. You are aware that they have no MMO's on the market yet, and their MMO development is being done with a new team of people in a brand new office in Austin, right? They don't make MMO's. This is brand new territory.

They have been working on it since 2005 and in fact, a couple of the people involved when they were interviewed about it said that "it's a lot of fun" which implies that back then it was already in a playable state (for a developer at least, I'm sure they were still in beginning stages)

No shit they have a team... but they have nothing on the market, unless you know something I don't and care to tell me what it is. he can't... he's bound by NDA not to say anything >.>

When I said "Bioware doesn't make MMO's" you realize that I was referring to the fact that they haven't made MMO's in the past, right? I don't question that they have something cooking now... but my statement was a matter of fact - that they currently have no publicly playable MMO - that they are new to this market and, as such, one cannot simply assume they will succeed at it because their other games (which were not MMO's) were good.
I just don't understand the point of theorizing about a game that we don't even know exists yet, from a company who has no massive multiplayer history.

and again I will point out "So What?" Blizzard didn't have experience making MMO's either, and look at the powerhouse they are now! and yes, Bioware has publicly stated that the project they were working on (again in 2005) was supposed to be an MMO (their words, not mine) as to what name/title/genre it was is anybody's guess. Heck the new offices in Austin TX are FOR their coming MMO's. I think it's kind of shallow to think they won't succeed just because they haven't made an MMO ever. contrast Blizzard to SOE, SOE one of the "founders" of 3d MMO's is now a laughing stock and were once considered to have "more experience" because that's what they did. Your argument is still very moot, it has no substance and no base in reality. You're making even broader assumptions about Bioware's capabilities, even broader assumptions than the people here speculating it will be a KOTOR MMO

I didn't say they won't succeed, and I'm not making any assumptions. I'm simply pointing out that:
1) Bioware has no MMO experience... so saying their upcoming MMO (be it Star Wars related or not) is going to be good because their others games are good is silly. You can't possibly know that. Sure, it could be great, but an argument either way isn't based on anything other than speculation and hearsay.
2) That fantasizing about what the game will contain before we're sure there is one is also silly, for reasons I shouldn't need to explain.
...but I've obviously hit on a nerve with you, so I'll let it go.

You say this like it is a fact that Bioware is making a KOTOR MMORPG, which isn't a fact.
On top of that, the Pre-NGE combat system did work. Bioware is also known for using the modified 3.0 DnD ruleset for KoToR, so you can forget about a skill-based system even if they were making a KoToR MMORPG. Only thing you can truly expect from Bioware, and this goes for whatever MMORPG they will make, is that it will have a rich story line to follow.
MMORPG's w/ Max level characters: DAoC, SWG, & WoW
Currently Playing: WAR Preferred Playstyle: Roleplay/adventurous, in a sandbox game.
Alright times up........Bioware farmed out the development of Neverwinter Nights 2 to Obsidian. The only real part of the game that Bioware was involved with was giving Obsidian the Aurora engine and technical support for said engine. Much like they did with KOTOR 2, which we all know was inferior to the original KOTOR which was a fully Bioware developed game. Why did they do this, glad you asked. Bioware wants to develop there own IP's by farming out games like NW2 they free up their development teams to give us mindblowing games like Mass Effect, their fisrt triple aaa franchise. While a KOTOR MMO is not an original IP, Bioware would be stupid not to realize how much revenue a new Star Wars MMO with their name on the box would bring them. Revenue that can be used to develop more of their own IP's. Oh, and any contractual agreement between Lucasarts and Bioware remains between them. The EA buyout of Bioware does not officially happen until January and Lucasarts and Bioware announcing that they have been working on a project together last week pretty much tells us that the deal was in place long before EA ponied up the loot.
Now time for you to look foolish. Prove to the readers here that the Lucas Arts and Bioware project is an MMORPG? I want to see where in that article, that I already read, said that their project is a MMORPG? No implying, just cold hard facts. Can you do it? Didn't think so. So quit the assumptions, because you know what they say about people who assume...
In my opinion, the project could likely be a KOTOR 3 single player RPG or another Star Wars single player game. At least there is some history to back up my opinion. After all, Bioware and Lucas Arts are known for their KoToR single player games.

Why would bioware farm out their IP games so they could free their developers to make their own games like Mass Effect. just to make a IP (ie Star Wars) MMO? Your arguement doesn't make any sense.
They could make their own MMO say Mass effect etc. That would get the Star wars players/fans (for the most part), and keep all the money from thier work, or they could make a Star Wars IP MMO and wind up giving alot of thier profits to Lucas Arts, give up their artistic / Dev freedom, and be bound to LA. So when LA wants tp pull another NGE Bioware would have to. Want to or not. Lucas Arts has Final say on its IP not the other way around.

Bioware has an MMO in development, right?
im not saying its $tar wars related mmo but they do have the team to do it if you bothered to check.
