Bad english due to online games?

well i have been observing the forums lately, and i noticed people spelling the word "'like" as "lyk" or things like saying "i know" as "i no." and of course i dont blame these games for bad english skills but i cant help but to wonder if they are contributing to the problem... Now dont get me wrong i loved playing MMORPGs especially ones like World of Warcraft or Guild Wars. But i get worried that one day this will start affecting my friends and i probably wont be able to have civilized conversations with them. So lend me your thoughts are MMORPGs a growing problem for all languages?

P.S. please excuse me if i have made any spelling or grammer mistakes i did run this post through spell check

Personally, I think we will all end up like the movie Idiocracy.

Yes, peoples linguistic skills have declined sharply.

Well, that didn't seem to work.

Anyway, I don't think that any game is responsible for bad English. It's just the people that get dumber and dumber. And this goes not only for english-speaking people or those trying.

The majority of players are teens. Probably using some sort of messenger that accounts for a good majority of their time on the computer. Personally, I have been using proper sentence structure since I began using the internet at the age of 13. But people can easily be influenced by those they "chat" with.

It is a festering problem, though they will probably grow out of it by adulthood. I've learned to just translate it, and not mention anything. Especially not as leverage in a debate, hehe that is pretty lame.

Heh, biggest mistakes you had were:

    1. Not capitalizing 'I'

    2. Grammar, not grammer ;P

I don't really think that online games are the cause of poor english skills, but they are a contributor. For example, my sister (whose only foray into MMOs was a 2 month stint in DAoC at the age of 8) has recently discovered MSN-messenger.

There will be times when I'm at school, dinking around on my laptop when I'll suddenly get a message from my sister that looks like this: 'yo sis how r u doing?' Honestly, it makes me want to cry. One of my english teachers recently wrote a text message up on the board that she got from one of her 101 students, it read, 'How r u?' And that's to an english teacher.

So, no. It's not MMOs, it's society.

    Sadly.

That was an awful movie, I cannot believe you even mentioned it. Did you watch it all the way through? I would like to see a viable documentary on the subject though. Besides the reality TV on MTV, of course.

Of course it was a horrible movie...just about as horrible as the multitudes of people on the forums and in the games that can barely spell their own names....(Brought to you by Carls Jr.)

Sorry about the grammar and spelling mistakes I made before,

But i guess when you think about it society really is getting progressively stupider as it goes along. In fact one day i was playing Counter-Strike online with 3 friends after school was over (my mom needed to come pick us all up ) Numerous head shots later my Girl friend sent me a message through the Steam chat client and it went like this

"Hi were u at ben w8ing fr 5 minz com soon kthxbai" And that is when my life turned upside down... and it is partly why i broke up with her.

Most of what you guys think is bad english is just short-hand, which has been around for years, Doctors use it computer tech use it everyone uses it. I see most of you guys use it here. brb is quicker to type than be right back, or others like IMO, LOL, BTR. Most of it started with the internet and text messaging on cell phone. So stop bitching about people using bad english, as you all know you have used short-hand and will use it again.

Eeeks. My text messages earn me some hate from my friends, because I'm an arrogant snob and I love being verbose.

Heh, I just figured out what 'kthxbai' means. I can be so retarded sometimes.

I do not want to be in a doctors office where the doctor is talking to me like "D00d wh475 up homee fo shizzle lolz brb cancer patient"

And i am just saying that forums over the recent years have had declining English, i mean i don't mind using that kind of stuff in games or on mobile phones but when it comes to online discussion through forums people should not be discussing things using terms like dood or lyk

My idea of the perfect girlfriend is someone smart and able to talk in a proper language who is in tune with what is going on in the world right now. Not some idiot stereotype that uses the word "like" 20 times before actually saying something that matters.

    Thankfully.

Granted, I'm done with multiple choice test/standardized testing until Grad school. Unless I get a lazy professor...

Hum... I should really finish my homework... Stupid MMORPG.com being so addictive.

I don't think anyone talks like that, they just type like that because it is quicker, like if you're in pvp battle and want to tell someone what to do you wont type the whole thing out, you would use short-hand as if you didn't you most likely would be dead. Plus i can see people do it in forums too as, it isn't like you are typing something for school or for work, you just talking about things on an internet forum which doesn't mean shit in real life.

I write and read english due to online gaming

I dont know if most of players learn a bad english or they know how to write it and they write it in the bad way liking to do it.

But I think is a common thing in most of the countries, here in spain most of the teenagers write a bad spanish, they dont know how to write it and they dont want to learn becouse is cool writing this way. So probably, english players write "I no" instead of  "I know" just becouse is cool.

I just started college, and most of my test so far have been multiple choice, but then again i got to ITT-Tech which isn't  worried about what type of test you take as long as you know the stuff they are teaching.

Well, I'm different, I'm mean and I don't like stupid people.

I probably would have made fun of her until she cried, then dated her best friend afterwards.

Ok...I'm not really THAT mean. But I really do hate stupid people. Not people who are naturally less intelligent, but those who choose to be less intelligent. Trust me there's a difference.

The easiest way to guarantee a slap upside your head, or at least a look of pure disgust is to speak to me in ebonic or web fanboi slang or ask me if Florida is in Europe....

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the occaisional WTF, or STFU, or FTW, for teh win...etc. But when it is apparrent that you REALLY think that is the only way to spell those words or phrases...then you should just hold your breath until you die and for the love of god (or whatever) do NOT reproduce! Let your bloodline die with yourself.

Um...like...I'm like...done and stuff, like yeah.

No seriously. People bringing up grammar and spelling mistake in a discussion is the lowest kind of critism(see right there, i cant spell that treeing word).
I don't blame people for bad grammar, or anything. I do it myself, especially in a heated situation ingame, or when im chatting with friends over MSN(Just close friends).

But I wouldn't tolerate ingame spelling errors in quests or like that. Or if i read a long forum post, that is very serious... I would question the poster.

But all in all... It's really how you present yourself to others. If there is people I would try and look presentable for, I would try and write better.

Speaking as if you are illiterate in a forum is akin to showing up for an interview in a corporate setting wearing a throwback jersey some basketball shorts and untied nike's.

It's one thing when its obvious you are doing it on purpose, but when it seems to be the only way you know how to spell it makes you be perceived as idiotic.
