Some of the other posters understood that too and were just commenting on why they wouldn't want it in the game. Most of the posts weren't directed at you in particular but more of a response to the idea of out of ship gaming.
To that end I wouldn't mind being able to explore planets...I understand they can't make the whole planet nor would I want them to but maybe a base on a planet much like EnB had. More of an eye-candy appeal than an actual interactive appeal. I'm an explorer and seeing some of the conceptual designs for buildings on planets I can see the appeal of making those ideas real.

Yupp yupp, I feel about the same way as you guys. I do have to admit yet again however, if all of those years of work that it would take to make an awesome planetary exploration/interactive evironment could just come out of no where, I wouldn't have minded seeing it. Afterall it'd be a relief to be able to get out of my ship sometime and jump into a 4x4 or hovering buggy with a friend and just cruise along a tropical or even desolate alien planetside, or maybe some urban terrain (i'd love to see amarr/caldari/gallente/minmatar architecture and the differences between them right there next to me). I could see that being fun if it was something with simple mechanics, but as beauitful and smooth and ambient as EVE, but that definitely should not be the devs main focus right now, and in fact they should never direct their focus there, they should continue developing EVE space. Just saying it'd be cool if it miraculously showed up out of no where and having taken up no ones time. Making a full out EQ or something similar out of it would be quite crap though, that I do not want.

i guess they were competing for mmo gamers as a whole, and not specificaly with the game engine / design itself. i mean both have skills, both have things to buy / make / sell. both have missions, resource harvesting, npc hunting, pvp. so the differences are mostly esthetic, even though one is in space and the other on terra ferma. also they were released almost simultaneously so the competition was very direct.

Personally I didnt like SWG, I do like Eve though and I think it will probably be the first MMO that I play for more than a few months.
When you get back into the game, look me up and I'll help ya out figuring everything out , since in your last post you said you were lost. The UI is actually very good once you get used to it, it is different than any other MMO I have played though. My main chars name in the game is 'HooYah' send me a msg with the eve mail system in the game and I will help you if you want.
it isnt the interface that confused me for the most part, I liked it more then anything else about the game other then the fact that to make the windows pretty it was a space hog. What I did have a problem with is nothing unique in the game to tell once place from the next. No matter where I went it looked the same. And ship upgrades and such, all the info about them was rather meaningless to me. I had no clue what was good and what wasnt.

It's space, so it's kind of hard to make places look different, but CCP are adding more and more animations etc to the game which should spice up the environments. Never the less space is always going to look similar so the best way to tell where you are is reading the label at the top left which tells you what star you are close to (i.e. what solar system you are in) and from there you can use the scanner to warp to different sectors of space, i.e. to an asteroid belt, or to a station, or to a stargate, or what not. There's also the manual solar system map you can pull up, which shows you your vicinity in the solar system, and if you're wondering where the solar system that you're in is relative to others, just open the galaxy map (beautiful site as well) plus you can use filters to see things like where there is lots of activity, where it's dangerous, etc. You can generally tell where you are in space by just looking around for landmarks, if you see a huge station then you're in the sector of that station, if you see nothing but a moon or planet seems quite big next to you then you're next to that moon or planet, if you see a stargate with lots of ships going through and jumping to other systems then you're in that specific stargate sector (mind you not all the stargates are next to eachother).
I think what he was suggesting he could help you with was general information, even information about how entities work if that's what you need to know, now you know us so you don't have to feel shy about asking other people if you don't want, contact his avatar, alternatively you can contact me as well, my ingame character is called 'Anjelle' but I won't be online with her for another two weeks or so since I'm not at home. Oh and you won't get lost looking for who's in which server because we're all in one, isn't that handy? I think EVE has even broken a few records for most people on one server at one time, and to be honest, as long as you have a good system and decent connection, you should not experience any lag at all, unless it's super-high time and the activity rate is extremely high for some reason, in which case some crowded systems can get laggy. To be honest though, around launch I experienced alot of lag, but since those times I havn't really seen any apart from on patch days and some sundays when huge amounts of people are on, and even then it's not that bad for me, although I have heard some stories =( Give it a go anyway, I think you might have fun.

Originally posted by 5150 I just hated how easy to 'exploit' it was at launch (mining in 0.0 in starting ship/equip) couple with the fact that basically you had to mine, mine and mine some more to get any cash - then the devs went and nerfed mining (no omber in 1.0 anymore) and then increased the pirates in the lower zones (good move) but never penalised those that took advantage of it earlier (creating the 'haves' and 'have nots') with no way for new players to ever bridge the gap Then there was the uncontrolable PvP (M00 camping 1.0 stations and ganking everyone) so you could lose everything in a heartbeat (add the fact that cloning wasnt in at launch) and the fact that all the factories/labs were taken (ok they changed this later but still gave early starters a massive edge that would never be closed) The game was just too unbalanced/unfair and will _never_ be fixed without a new server/server wipe - new players need to become mining whores to the big corps if they ever want a hope of any of the cool stuff

alsoi made about 60 mil already just doing agent missions.
They peeps mining im cooperation that see how well im doing are more and more doing agents missions in between .
there 4 starting ways sins release 1. mining 2. killing pirates 3. agent missions 4. selling and buyiing normal goods

I personally don't remember this statement so I can't say what context it was said in. But my guess is that at the time since SWG was the only big name Sci-Fi MMORPG with EnB still on the way they most likely were just fighting for the Sci-Fi fan base. Was it misleading? Maybe, it all depends on the context it was taken in. They did do a good job of describing the game before release though. I used to follow it day by day and they were proud of the game being a mouse strategy in-ship space sim.

I tried SWG, and it was quite fun, I was impressed with the visuals, animations, sound, interface, features, pretty much everything felt good. The thing it didn't have for me was longetivity, I got bored after just a few weeks, maybe it wasn't for me, but I like the concept. EVE is for me though I guess because I like the community much more and of course all of the other things I've mentioned earlier in this thread, and the community is so important in MMORPGs, especially in those like EVE where they practically build the game situation (they make current events, etc.).

I agree, community can make or break an mmorpg. One of the other mmog's that I played for a while was Horizons, and the community was the biggest reason I kept playing. Same thing with DAOC, the game is pretty good but its not great, but find some people to play with and it makes it more fun.
On the other hand, I also played Ultima Online, and quit after less than a month mostly because there was no community.
I find that the games where I find a good guild, or in this case a good corporation have more longevity with me, mostly because I have interesting people to play with...which really is the whole point of any MMO game. In the case of Eve though I dont think it really matters to me, its the game itself which I find has some addictive qualities. Although I do have a good corp already.
EVE does have lots of addictive factors to it, but I believe the community affects that atmosphere more than you think. I atleast personally deal with strangers every day, and if they didn't exist (i.e. the game was completely run by AI) or if those people were all a$$hats, EVE would not feel quite as addictive, I wouldn't feel like I had as much to strive for and many of my goals would be crushed, given that the scope of EVE gameplay is so huge.

I have to completely disagree with your n00bs cannot geta foothold. I am one of those players that DID join day-of-release and yes I got a foothold, however at that point it still took me 6 months to get my first battleship.
Now wwith the help of established corps n00bs can be up and running in a battleship in less that 6 weeks, to me each patch has been there to gear the balance and it's working...
It's been awhile now so I don't remember perfectly, but as I recall, the biggest complaint that I had against EVE was the ammount of time spent staring at the warp tunnel and how much time had to be spent mining.
So one may not need to mine as much as they had to "back then". That's definitely a good thing.
The agent missions at the time would send the player on the same task, and over and over. Sometimes they would send you to different locations - occasionally taking up to 20+ minutes to complete the run - but it'd be the same thing that you previously done (deliver tourists or communication arrays). It made the game an experience of: Stare at the pretty tunnel, get a nap in, or do a house chore while your ship bounced around on auto-piolet.
It was the same problem that I had with E&B. Both games were a lot of fun but forced so much "down time" on the player by way of uber long "warps" that it wasn't worth keeping, in my opinion.
Even with all of the aforementioned complaints I still say that EVE is a great game. It'd potentially have me as a subscriber again if they've tweaked it enough that I wouldn't be bored out of my wits by mining all day or spending the vast majority of my time doing nothing whilest my ship bounces about in auto piolet.
I loved the ship's voice - that just kicked so much arse. The music and graphics speak for themselves and I would really enjoy getting into a space sci-fi. They just need to tweak that gameplay so it's not so darn boring... staring is not fun.

That's understandable, as I've said many a times if you're creative enough you can come up with lots of fun things to do, but now things have changed alot and that's not even necessary, I think if you came in right now you'd enjoy it alot, believe me you do not have to mine and believe me you do not have to travel a damn lot. It might be an idea to wait until Shiva comes out though, Shiva is this superhuge megapatch expansion coming out that's going to make EVE ridiculous. I can't wait for it to come out.

I'll keep an eye on the game. I'm still itching to get into a sci-fi MMOG.
I remember the last time that I played I would have EVE running whilest running Horizons. It was ironic in that I was doing a lot of resource gathering in both games at the time.
It was kind of interesting to hear my dragon dig, dig, dig, and then the warp engine would kick through.
I've played EVE for over a year. There is no doubt the the game has great graphics and overall gameplay. However, I am a fairly big PvP fan and I have to admit that I do not care for the PvP in EVE. There are many truths in the things that have already been said, good and bad. There are numerous ways to make money, though overall, mining is the best, and most would say the least enjoyable. I think that the chat interface could be jazzed up a bit, but then again, lots of people/corps use voice chat like Teamspeak, etc. especially for PvP ops.
I do believe that most sci-fi genre fans who have the patience to invest the time necessary to gain skills and experience will find that the payoff was worth the effort though without some frustrations.
Mining may make you more money if you have an apoc. To me in a Caracal or with my g/f in a MOA we get more money hunting. We used to do agent missions but I'd have to agree that they can get repetative. Fortunately there are a ton of different agent types now. I don't know how this was in release but you have a wide array of things to choose from now other than just courrier missions. They have a small number of missions per still so that is why I switched over to hunting. I kill rats in cruisers and I make about a mill an hour. May not be a lot but for me it is better than the alternatives and it is more than I'd make mining. :P It is however, much more dangerous which makes it more exciting I suppose. lol

Everyone is different I suppose, I think pvp in EVE is quite fun however and I've heard from many others that it's the best they've ever experienced, but as mentioned everyone has their own opinion on things. I don't know if I agree with you on the mining part though, unless you're mining extremely high end ore, even if you're in an apoc, mining the lower-mid ranged ore has not yielded as much cash as level 3 kill missions, or NPC BS hunting has. Not even close, but I guess it depends on what type of gaming style you want to pursue. Yeah TS is extremely useful, we use it in our corp which is mid sized, in larger ones it can be quite confusing unless it's organized very well, but it's never the less extremely useful.

Haha, you've got a dragon with a warp drive going on there. Sci-fi MMOGs are great aren't they? I wish there were more of them out, but I'm afraid the vast majority of the players prefer the whole fantasy thing. It's definitely not to my liking but what can one do.

What I'm most surprised about is the fact that there isn't a "Eve of Fantasy games" so to speak. That is, a complex involved game that doesn't treat its users as some sort of testosterone-poisoned thirteen-year old (swords twice the size of people, all female creatures have large breasts and wear bikinis, etc, etc). Something that actually manages to weave a semi-reasonable and -believable universe.
Of the new games coming out, I'd say Dark & Light looks like the only option for us that would like a proper fantasy. Too bad Warhammer Online folded, looked like it had some potential in this direction as well.

Those of you who haven't played it yet try it
It's been awhile now so I don't remember perfectly, but as I recall, the biggest complaint that I had against EVE was the ammount of time spent staring at the warp tunnel and how much time had to be spent mining.

"Feel free to hate me, but hate me for the right reasons."
"Your still ignorant if you believe the first thing you see when the blindfold is removed."
"Be smart enough to know I'm smarter than you."
