There are an infinte amount of possiblities using that universe. Personally, I'd want to start somewhere in Lyra's world with a Daemon of my own, and the ability to do whatever, wherever. Find passages into other worlds/dimensions, battle specters, fly with the witches of Svlabard. Fight or negotiate with the Panserbjørne. I think my meaning is clear :D
But it'd have to have some sort of 'personality' test at the beginning of character creation so everyone isn't running around with a Lion/Snow Leopard/Wolf daemon.
On the other hand, it might make a better single player RPG.

the golden compass, jesus christ. this is like how philosophers stone got dumbed down to "sorcerers stone" for america. the americanisation has struck again...

its a friggin aletheometer. golden compass sounds so lame. I love the books but dont think they are mmo material. good games and mmos tend to have a combat focuss and while there is plenty of combat in the world of the books the books themselves are in no way focused on combat or anything mmo related.

    Sabriel (garth nix's old kingdom)

would be awesome imo. I have already said why in another thread like this. the classes and everything is all sorted plus its not kiddy like harrypotter/eragon/northernlights. nothing wrong with kiddy, just there are too few non kiddy mmorpgies (ie just AoC).

My first choice would be shadowrun, secone would be WoT assuming that the game could be decently balanced...iirc the only times one power users got killed by non power users was via plot devices like forkroot or ambushes. I'd really like to see a Wild Cards MMO. It would be interesting to have a superpower game where your powers don't have to connect to your profession, like being a private detective that can teleport, and regular humans can still be a factor. The tough part would be designing the powers and limitations.

Hey now, you hold on just a minute there! I'm American and I resent that statement. We don't use alethermometers, we have labels that tell us when it's cold. And it's not ale, it's called beer here. Beer thermometers are just stupid anyway. You just better watch yourself pal

    EDIT: And you mispelled thermometer!

Are you being stupid on purpose? Hard to tell if people are being sarcastic when people post stuff dumb stuff on the internet.

anyhow I just read dune for the first time. amazing book. would be pretty hard to turn into a mmo imo.

Surely you can't think that anyone would be that dumb...  Yes, I suppose I was being "stupid on purpose", mocking and playing into your "americanisation" rant. Sorry, they don't have a sarcasm emoticon.

sci-fi:  saga of the seven suns is a fairly rich universe, the story and characters are quite straight forward so it could make translating it into a mmo a bit easier.
many ideas are inspired by books albeit watered down, simplified worlds.  games (even single player) have a long way to go before they can even begin to approach the amount of depth given in books.   look at the type of games, mostly shooters and some remake of another vanilla rpg.  i might be a bit jaded but the games are just not very inspiring and rarely do i bother to finish a game nowadays.

Yes! The Riftwar saga was wonderful. It might make a good MMO with the different worlds being at war. You would have an automatic "good vs evil" plot already set up. I vote for that one.

    Top Three for me...

Mechwarrior... (has to include all battle options... armor, mechs, infantry, aerospace)

DragonLance... During the first trillogy war.

Shadowrun... Why has this been overlooked ?? Too bad FASA died.

Song of Ice&fire would be ideal for a fantasy MMO.  I got my maester rolled up in my head already.  I'll do quests for Dany anyday too, she dont even have to give me a reward :D

For Sci-fi i am surprised nobody's mentioned the foundation books by Asimov.

For something really off the wall, American Gods by Gaiman.  Everyone's a god.  the more worshippers you have the more relavant you are, etc etc, it'd work kind of.

For an anime setting, Record of lodoss war, or maybe berserk

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

    Currently Playing EVE, ESO

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

Any good western movie would be great for an MMO world.

I would go with Ravenloft series particularly revolving around The Knight of The Black Rose Lord Soth once he got trapped in the "evil" lands. There is just so much possibility there, I mean dark, evil fantasy filled with magic, zombies, warevolves and vampires where everyone who's anyone is evil and corrupt.

My other pick would be a game based on the Deathstalker universe. The books are a light read but depth of the universe and the possibilities are virtualy endless. Swords, guns, battle drugs, espers, strange aliens and a corrupt government all add up to great loads of fun in my opinion.

Oh and Harry Potter MMO would be great too.

The Songs of Ice and Fire Series by GRRM, would be brilliant with Realm pvp, anyone who has read the book often establishes a bond with one of the houses, and i think it could well be carried over into an MMO where people would actually care about the realm. However there isn't much magic potential, but the land... it huge and full of goodies

I don't know, I think there is quite a lot of potential for magic.  I mean, look at what happened to Dany's baby and Khal Drogo.  Oh, and the fire priest that can resurrect Lord Bolton, etc.

Probably said many times before, but Wot "Wheel of Time" by Robert Jordan.

Books of Malazan the Fallen by Steve Erikson. While not the best example of high fantasy the series itself has base play and end-game (ascendency) built in, multiple balanced and very different factions and a giant pile of lore built into it.

Games are best when they are built off new worlds and lore, that way there is not expectation going in. I know WoW fans will argue that but i still love EQ the most because i knew nothing about the world until the second i logged in.
That being said i think Forgotten Realms would work, as long as it wasnt DDO again. Perhaps that is what R.A. Salvatore is working on with 38 Studios, though i think that is a original game world.

WoW IS based off of new worlds and lore developed for a game (Warcraft).

Actually WoW is based off of existing lore from Warcraft. Semantics i know but you can have played Warcraft or just read about it and had a pretty decent idea what  to expect before you ever logged into WoW, EQ didnt exist in any fashion prior to launch so everyone was learning as they went, pretty awesome experience. Which is what i meant.

I do agree with you that the One Power is too powerfull. Mat and Perrin are big players in WoT but as you said Rand could rip them apart, or just make them cease to exist (past and present).

I think there is enough diversity in the books and the world is big enough to provide for a MMO but it would be hard to mold characters into it. Can you play Sea Folk? Who would want to play someone from Lugard? Will the Domani women all wear revealing clothes? Do i get to make out with Berelain? Besides, everyone would want to be Aiel.

Or Mat, i would want to be Mat.

Personally I would love to see Robert Jordans Wheel of Time series turned into a MMO, the only game I have even seen based in this world was a very mediocre might and magic type first/third person shooter.
This is a well developed, interesting world, which has a magical system that offers some interesting options as far as game mechanics go.
    Thoughts, opinion, your own suggestions
That's easy. Either create a Forgotten Realms MMO, or a Dragonlance MMO. Why? Well EQ, EQ2, and Vanguard all basically took everything from those D&D campaign settings and created their own world to resemble theirs in many ways.. Don't get me wrong, EQ, EQ2, and even VG did a pretty good job with it's own lore, history, races, classes, etc, but I'd really love to see a game company take a shot and create a real D&D Online and call it either Forgotten Realms Online or Dragonlance Online. And I'd make sure to add all the races, classes, spells, abilities, even split classes based on the D&D ruleset.

I'd love to see this happen more than anything.

The Taltos series by Steven Brust  has many elements that would fit well in a MMO:

    • Two major races
      • Two types of "magic", one for each race.
    • Clans.
      • Each clan has distinct abilities and traits.
    • Politics. alliances and intrigue
    • Assassins - always fun!
    • Ideal for RP
    • Ideal for both PVE and PVP (even RVR - who will control the Orb and the Cycle?)
    • Ideal for skills (setting traps, picking locks, negotiations, etc...)
    • Ideal for crafting (spell components, smithing, etc..)
    • The main character has a pet/familiar!  Pets!
    • Unique, named intelligent uber weapons that are soulbound to one character only!  Imagine being the only one who can ever wield one specific weapon!

Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson - the virtual world part of it.

Apprentice Adept series, by Piers Anthony

If you haven't read them, two parallel worlds, one Sci-Fi the other fantasy.  And some people can go back and forth.

In the Sci-Fi world there is a huge game arena.  And all the slaves are naked.

If you haven't read them I highly recommend then.
