Hi, I'm new here.

I've been playing Baldur's Gate (Forgotten Realms, D&D rules) sinds 1998, with some breaks in between of course. But the last couple of months I haven't been interested in the game anymore. I love the role playing part of RPGs, I wanna feel inside the game-world, but that top-down 2D view and the feeling that I'm the only one moving in the game doesn't give me what I need anymore. So I started to read reviews and view trailers of many different 3D RPGs. Morrowind defenitely looks the best singleplayer RPG, but then I started thinking about MMORPGs. I really like medieval settings, fantasy settings are ok I guess, but I don't like science fiction settings.

Anyway, I have a few questions about EverQuest: (there are probably more to come)

1) EQ looks so good with it's many expansions, I noticed that the graphics of the latest ones are much better then that of the original game. When you install the latest expansion, will the graphics of the original part of the world also be upgraded ?

2) How long does it take to walk from the one side of the world to the other in EQ ? I just wanna know how vast EQ's world is.

3) In Baldur's Gate, when you click on an npc he always tells you the same little line, you can't ask anything and there are practically no conversations. It's really hard to roleplay in such a game. How's this in EQ ?

Ive said it before and i'll say it again never eat stale chickens.

for those of you who are too stupid to understand what that means. BUY EQ2 .. single player games can be outdated and still good , but when it comes to mmorpgs steer clear!!!!image So keep it real dont do eq and buy the real deal

In my opinion MMORPG's are very different from regular single player RPG's for 2 major reasons.

    1) You as a player, are not at the center of the story and thus the story itself has a smaller impact on the game itself. After all, we can't all be Frodo or Luke Skywalker. So if its storyline and roleplaying you're after, i'd say Neverwinter Nights (both on and offline) is a much better choice than Everquest.

    2) Lets face it, MMORPG's are about item/gold/level whoring.. i'd say the overall feel of MMORG's like Everquest is one far less romantic than Baldurs Gate or a good dedicated NWN server, especially after years of new expansions.

How long to travel from one side of the world to the other walking?  Uh, prolly like a week, even then Im not too sure.  Easier to have a wizard or druid teleport you.

The NPC's usually will talk with you depending on what you say to them, they have full conversations (usually for quests).  Other NPC's wont talk to you such as vendors.

Everquest is a very fun game. Its a bit hard to grasp at first, and quests might seem rediculuous at times when first starting out, but it is very fun nevertheless. Hunting goblin camps and chasing after specific creatures with a ranger just doens't get boring!

One thing i noticed in EQ is that its so hard to get a mount, and i really odnt like that. I hate having to run every where at a slow speed. I wouldnt mind on a horse, but just walking kills me.

Its interesting getting quests from NPCs because you dont always know what to ask them, and it even sometimes gets annoying. Not sure about the graphics, im just waiting on EQ2.

Mounts are basically just a status symbol, not for getting around more quickly.  Almost all of the mounts are slower than you would be with a speed buff (SOW).  And also so you can med without sitting.

Hey thats not true , you ever heard of walking speed buff? And even if your class cant cast it theres always some crazy man in town standing there willing to cast in on you if you want. Although i dont know if this still goes on beacuause populations have probaly dropped to the extreme , This is like 1 and a half years ago im talkin bout so i dont really know. But u mine aswell just wait a little for eq2 to come out if your system can handle it . That way u can start fresh with everyone and be at the same paceimageyour decision though. Just my opinion

    o man..where to start

Eq Has a HUGE world....like 5-6 continents each with like 200 zones lol....Each continent has the starting cities for each of the races.....

Theres like 15 classes and 13 races

    The economy/money is Copper...silver....gold...platnium....

thers fun PVP....PVP only servers.....normal servers....Roleplaying servers......specific lang servers....lol in total thers like 52 servers

Theres alot of crafting trade skills..black smith....alchemy(shaman only)...tinkering(gnome only)...tailoring....research(caster only)well some casters get this......plus more....

Alot of mobs and mob types....not like FFXI where you fight all of the same mobs with different names lol....

this game has an awesome community aswell as an awesome customer service......I have gotten tons of help from the CS.......

I been playing eq on and off for 3 yrs now....so...i dunno...this game isn't for everyone tho...

The game world is so vast now you couldnt really walk across it.  Would literally take weeks to explore every zone..and probably a week or so to traverse from one end of the world to another using no travel spells/portals..

Travel in EQ however has gotten very easy with druids and wizzies porting (always a good feature) but now augmented to the detriment of the game with portals that instantly zap you to just about any region in the game...

The game itself is still very alive and very vibrant.  I dont think the player base has decreased that much..youd still find it to be by FAR the biggest and most active game out there atm.  Its player base is several times greater then its nearest competitor..

EQ was and is a great game..however starting out now might be a bit tough..with 65 levels and about 500plus alt exps levels and now Ldon points for items and flags etc..youll never catch up..

However if being at the top isnt a consideration and you can hook up with a low level 35-55ish guild you could still have an incredible time..

EQ is the gold standard atm for Mmorpgs' despite all the critics on this board..heck most critics will admit to "two or three years" of playing the game...can ye think of any of the last 10 releases that will even come close to keeping your attention for 6 months? ! never mind two or three years?

    Worth a shot id reckon...

    Waaw, thank you all.

The comments about better playing singleplayer rpgs for roleplaying and story -> In singleplayer rpgs you are forced into the story, into doing the main quest, or you wont advance to the next chapter. Roleplaying is LIVING in the world, it's not being part of the big story.

The comments about not being able to catch up with the other players -> I started playing Diablo2 THIS year, that's also very late, the game is PACKED with powerplayers, I have been called "n00b" dozens of times, but I don't care. But yes, this isn't Diablo2.
