HL is no trash, it is the way how new age games are made. Now either you like it or not but take a look around, what is better? wow maybe, no i do not think so wow is grind fest and that is that. All true masterpieces are games from the past like ultima on line. There is no really good games nowdays and to call hl trash then you call every new game trash becouse I am afraid that we will receive more and more of those kind of games.
I remember when the NDA was lifted, and I let everyone know how bad the game was going to be based on beta gameplay + quotes from the developers on the beta forums, about the EULA, and how the core concept by FSS was completely off.
The response i received from people, fanboys, who have not even played the game... was outlandish. They worshiped the product before it was released, saying its the best game ever, that I didnt know what i was talking about, that its the next diablo...ect
Now i see these very same fanboys, angry at the game because...oh shucks... it didnt live up to their fanatical expectations. It takes a lot for a fanboy to change sides like that... which really says something about the game.
The sad truth is, the man responsible for Diablo is actually working on Star Trek online at Perpetual Entertainment. NOT FSS. The talent behind Diablo is working for a different company, the left overs formed FSS.
The Devs at FSS said they want it to be a "joke game". A Shaun of the dead, and nothing close to being epic. They "hate" epic games according to one post by a dev. The result was some very bad NPCs. They had to get rid of 80% of the NPC voice overs because they were so bad.
FSS was just kind of throwing things together as they went along, and quite frankly... they lack professionalism when it comes to game design. They rely on two things to attract the customers, that being Graphics for those distracted by image saturation, and hype. The general consumer base is fairly stupid, as they will buy anything that sparkles with enough hype stapled onto it.
HGL is not a quality game. Quality is not something you base on graphics.... but on how it was made. From pre-production to post production. From the decisions made, to the effect those decisions had on the consumers.
HGL fails in every aspect. It looks good, but after a short while, you realize that candy bar you are eating is really a piece of poop.
/stamps feet " I dont wike it daddy !! I dont!!" "Thats ok baby we will make sure no one does then eh" "im going to scweam and scweam and scweam until im sick"!!!"

In your narrow world, only fanboys are allowed to talk, i guess.
Actually no .Im my world people who dont use caps and make sweeping statements about subjects that are,in themselves, subjective, can feel free to post without ridicule. I am neither fanboy nor hater, however if i was to post in caps and tell you that something like STRWBERRY MILSHAKE IS THE WORST!!! EVEH OFFICOAL!!!!! then id expect you to pidgeon hole me.
I think hellgate is fun. A little repetitive but new maps will come. i LIKE THE STORY AND THE WACKY CHARACTERS...oops caps lock. Grant it, its no ff7 story, but its not bad. I have a feeling that PVP is gonna rock az in this game too.

i am still having alot of fun...but i am no uber power gamer....bought it upon release and am still only lvl 18 due to having a rl, wife, 1yr old, mortgage, and can only play games maybe 1-2hours a day....i am still finding it a blast.

Even humans can be entertained by a piece of string. Kids back in the day used to run around with a stick while smacking the crap out of a can. So its no surprise that some can be entertained by the most silly things.

Wheres your logic? How do you compare HG:L to a piece of string and a can? I mean its at least 5 times more complex :P Seriously though, some people don't have time to tire endlessly at the game screen desperately grinding to get a few more pixels with mathematical equations built in so they can be "uber". As we have a life out side of the game world also. Hellgate is perfect for casual gamers. Its quick action with enough depth in skills and mods to make it interesting. No its not EVE but its still a good hack+slash/fps/rpg.

Have you tried to rationalize it? or did you automatically take a stance without thinking? The logic is clear. Anything in life, no matter how stupid or simple, can entertain some people.
You are confused. Casual gaming has nothing to do with bad game design. If someone does not have a lot of time in a day to play a game, that does not mean badly designed games, that may be entertaining (like a can and a stick), has anything to do with casual gaming. Casual gaming is a play style. Any game, can be played casually. The problem arises when the player whines that they do not accomplish as much within that period of time. Nice try though.
There is no depth in HGL. Sorry to burst your bubble. It is a depthless game. It is not complex in how it is played. All items are given random variables in which they drop. Each enemy is an object flagged to give loot to the player. Each level is a repetative tileset. How it works? Player A is target, enemy tagged objects attack player A. Player A mashes attack commands, gets rid of enemy tagged objects. Picks up random objects that drop. The end.
The first step to game design and challenge is looking at the rule set. What one can and cannot do within the given rules programmed into the game.
HGL is not complex, its not original, it is badly designed... the world alienation comes to mind. The devs were clearly not organized when designing the game. There is no linkage between the player, the npcs, the enemy and the world. HGL is a job, and your job is to grind for loot. Thats it.

I'm not going to argue who's opinion is right because there is none. An opinion is a point of view that resolves from past experiences. You say its bad game design. I personally think it isn't that bad. Just needs some work. To dispute opinion = null.

I enjoy Hellgate London, fun to play by myself and more fun with my buddies. Sure it has bugs but what game doesn't when its first released? I think too many people were expecting this game to be the next big hit MMORPG when in fact it isn't and wasn't supposed to be an MMORPG at all.

Even worse imo.
It's people like you that are giving these absurd reviews for horrible games (this is not directed toward the OP). I bet you go around saying Starcraft is not the best RTS anymore, or Ultima Online is the worse MMO to date because the graphics lick balls. You have no experience in games and should just go back to your "Call of Doody" and "Gaylo" franchise on the consoles.
This post was irrelevant to the thread, and may be deleted... ahhh well.
I agree Diablo 2 was a crap. I didn't enjoy a single moment in it and quit it a couple of hours after. And note that I'm playing games for like 18 years now, I remember Ishar and Dungeon Master were my first games.
And yeh I also believe starcraft is/was not the best RTS as well, I always enjoyed Age of Empires 1 much more that any "..craft" RTS.
I agree 100% with the OP and Rabenwolf, this game sucks
Lol Hellgate is the most repetitive piece of crap I have ever played. I literally just said why am I playing this? And shut the game off and haven't started it since.
But now lets think, why would someone play this P.O.S... to become 50 and kill the same Retarded MOBs in the same 4 dungeons?? There is absolutley no point to this game. I know the same could be said about Diablo, but at least Diablo was good. Diablo varied its Acts and actually strung the ACTs together as if you were playing a movie. HellGate is one of the worst Game I have ever bought and one of the biggest disapointments ever.
PS.... The OP already did a good job of mentioning why this game is such a P.O.S and also if they do add PVP to this game its gonna be the lamest thing ever.
I enjoyed this game although I did not play it for very long.
I do think it was original in it's inclusion of FPS to the Diablo genre. I did like it's theme; and while the London art direction was picture postcard rather than locals-eye view it was fun to see the Tower and the subways and Picadilly and the river bed.
I fully suspect I will never become bored enough to actually complete this game and see the final movie clip. A pity.
It would have had more longevity if the Multiplayer aspects had been better visualised by the developers. They don't seem to have had any particular grasp over this area of the game.
Good game, a worthy addition to my collection. 7/10.

Instead of expressing one's view about a game, too many have taken on the holy crusade to force one's own view on others, to the extent that truth/theory/facts, or outright humiliation are brought out to propagate a view. Come on, its a game, and its someone ELSE's view about a game. There is no need to agree with someone ELSE's view. There is absolutely no need to convert that someone ELSE. To be honest it still needs work but at the same time i think it has hit upon a niche market. With so many recent dissapointments in the genre for me this is a refreshing and new look at the hybrid fps/rpg.At 10 bucks a month i like it even better.
Say what you will but this game ,for what it is,is a lot better than most mmo's out atm imho.
