Wow. If you've been waiting to check out Eve, now would be a good time. Expect a couple server hiccups over the next week tho.
Sweet new ships, jaw dropping visuals. Hurray for EvE!!

DAMMIT! My graphics card broke the other day, and it's still being "tested" (how long does it take to test a card ffs!?) so I can't play it until I've got a new one!
Oooooh fullscreen login! ...and yea, only 27.7MB.

I hate to be negative, since the update did add a ton of stuff (and they managed to get it up and running with great stability ahead of schedule); a lot of the effects are really great, the new lighting is very dramatic, and I especially love the way cloaks fade now. That said, the model frames don't seem to have been touched at all. I was looking at my Domi in the station, and it still has all of those flat textures that should be three-dimensional. The frame is exactly the same, it just has a different skin on it; there are still two-dimensional discs stretched over the frame with flat lighting over them, despite the new colors and shadows.
I probably got my hopes up too high thanks to that gorgeous trailer, but the improvement just wasn't anywhere near as drastic as I thought it was going to be with regard to specific ships. The stations definitely look better, the Amarr ships are absolutely shinier than they ever were, but I'm really hoping the DX10 client adds some additional contour to the models. Right now, a lot of the details still appear like decals slapped on a flat hull. I adore the stability, love the game, like the update, but there's still room for improvement.
EDIT: I'm just talking about the graphics here. I really love the new mechanics they've added, the improved transparency of the UI items, the new icons to display which ship your drones are targeting, the fact that drone shield/armor/structure now displays horizontally to save space, the additional ESC menu options, all of that. I think it was a great patch over all, but the graphics update wasn't as updated as I hoped it would be.
yeah i dig the new graffix and the nice subtle changes to the ui is nice as well.
playing eq2 and two worlds
Are you sure its not your graphics card as by mine not only are the gamer models different but the textures are many times better.
And did you download the New art content?
And just in case im wrong could you link me to some screenshots showing this graphical problem of yours.

Yes, I'm seeing all the new stuff. I downloaded and applied the Premium content, I'm running an 8800GTX, I have all the options toggled on in the ESC panel. I definitely see the new appearances, and some of it is terrific. My Domi, the Kestrel, and a number of other ships still have sort of a trompe-l'oeil thing going on, though, where it's a two-dimensional detail stretched over a flat skin rather than a three-dimensional detail protruding from that skin. It's especially noticeable on the Domi, as it's covered in these little discs that have painted on shading to make them look three-dimensional, but they're actually just little "decals." These ships have always had that going on, but I was sort of hoping the new textures would add some actual contour to those details.
I know this is nitpicking. Believe me, I'm sure I'm one of very few people that notices or cares about this stuff, and it's definitely not going to get me to cancel or do anything absurd like that. I really am an overall fan of the items they've added with this update. It's just an area of the artwork that still has some room for improvement.
Actually there is an additional download to get the most out of the graphics (that is why you are only seeing 25 megs)
Go into your options and you'll see something about downloading a premium graphics update... do that and you'll download the rest.
I've done that, that's not what I'm talking about. Here's an image:

I'm not denying the overall look is better, but if you look at the front and side of the ship, you'll see those little panels of circular metallic discs. They're absolutely flat. They have some shading painted over the top of them to give them false depth, but they're entirely two-dimensional, and that technique is used all over the ship, and quite a few others. What I was hoping was that they'd actually use DX9 to give those features some real contour. Again, I know I'm nitpicking, but it was something that really leapt out at me.
It's not that the ship is completely bereft of three-dimensional features; there's depth on top and some fins on the side. The little details, however, are two-dimensional, and that becomes really apparent when you pan the camera. It's a bit like having a face that looks like it has a three-dimensional nose, but upon looking at the silhouette, you realize there's just a flat expanse between the eyes and the mouth. It's not gamebreaking, or really even a huge deal, but it was the sort of thing I'd hoped to see modified in a graphics update. I think after making all of these posts, unfortunately, I may have come across as if I believe it's a serious problem, when really it's just a minor disappointment for me. Go on about your business.
EDIT: For what it's worth, it's not every ship that has this problem. I actually used a sentence today about my Bestower that I never would've believed I'd say: "Holy smoke, my Indy is HOT!" There's definitely an upside to the update.
You replied while I was replying ... we just crossed our lines
I just wanted to remind folks to download the premium stuff
love the new graphics. i posted a before and after shot on my blog, but i don't think i did it justice. i think i should've chosen a different ship, but the details are much nicer.
Yeah, real good patch job. Just don't re-boot your computer.

I have to agree, not as eye popping as I had let my self come to expect. The drake looks almost exactly the same. The lights on it are better (you can see them in the dark). But the model is the same. Even the texture looks like it was hardly touched.
I've also crashed twice, both while exiting in the last 20 min. And they did not fix the Vista + X-Fi sound issue.
But, those things put aside, the game is better than it was 2 days ago, and the lighting / interior of the stations are absolutely beautiful. Lets hope for more updates like this, maybe mini model updates or something. give me more polygons!
These graphics are just part 1 of what theyre going for. DX10 support coming in the 2008 update (Along with factional warfare, or so Ive heard).
Anyway, Im very pleased about the looks. Oh, and the new drone keybinds! Huzzah!

To say it simple: If you didn´t download 400+ mb you don´t have the premium graphics. And you need a graphics adapter that handles shaders 3.0.
Meh for anyone complaining about how ugly the Domi is you should put it near an Osprey and you will notice a big appereance improvement
I've been staring at the rear-end of my space whale for over two years now, and I must say the new graphics make it a lot less annoying. I no longer have to zoom my whale into a dot!
I noticed the same with the small details, but that's something a modeller/UVmapper would definately do with such relatively small greeblies. Having them all in the mesh would up the tri count to somewhere on the 100k-range, which is unworkable for any computer. Even CRYSIS doesn't have that much actual detail on their models. To be honest, they've probably got a model for Domi (and all other ships) that has about 2-3 million polies, for making the detailed bump-map on the low-poly model. Too bad we won't ever see that in the game.
I admit, the front end of the new Domi sorta looks uninspiring, the 'forehead hump' especially looks like it's been polished. They could've done better, I guess they just ran out of ideas. Domi is, however, just about the ugliest ship possible in EVE.
I still love it though. Space whales for the win!
Well, to be fair, while I do have problems with some ships, there are some that look sexier than ever, too. Here are a few shots of my personal favorite:

The Amarr ships look really amazing; most of them have a lot of really fantastic relief-work on them (see the area around the engines in image #2) in addition to the incredible reflections on their darker "brass" plates. Also, seeing a Providence up close really knocked my socks off. The detail on all of the freighters is really pretty amazing (though Gallente seemed to get the short end of the stick on that one, too). There are some real bright spots in the new graphics in addition to the problems I have with some of the models.
I started a trial account to check out if this patch made it worth reactivating a few of my old accounts. Am I one of the few that were expecting,,, well more from the graphic update?
Yes the ships got new paint jobs and model tweeks but I was expecting, well more.
The Example was used above about the etching on the ships which is simply a new skin. While it does look a lot better, well let me put it this way. I created this sword for a TC back in 1998, It is simply a skin on a single extruded face.
I understand what the poster above ment, I also expected more (from the graphic part of ther patch), yes it's better than before but the reality is, It's like throwing a new paint job on my 1991 POS cougar, yes it looks better but I am still driving a 1991 POS cougar.
Fly safe all.

Anyone know how to get rid of all the jagged edges?
It's horrible
Played so far: 9Dragons, AO, AC, AC2, CoX, DAoC, DF, DnL, DR, DDO, Ent, EvE, EQ, EQ2, FoMK, FFO, Fury, GW, HG:L, HZ, L1, L2, M59, MU, NC1, NC2, PS, PT, R:O, RF:O, RYL, Ryzom, SL, SB, SW:G, TR, TCoS, MX:O, UO, VG, WAR, WoW...
It all sucked.
You get rid of those by initialising Anti Analising [assuming your card can do this graphical trick].

Sorry to hear that perhaps you should go to Eve and bugreport it then go to the relivent section of the official eve forums and post some screenshots for the devs to see [ Id try GAME DEVELOPMENT FORUM ].
The deve read posts from there often but i advise you wait a few days till this recent problem has blown over as im sure most devs will be quite buisy elswherre.
