Hmm I used the Premium upgrade patch downloaded from the Eve-O site and didn't really have a problem.  I did have a small issue when I rebooted after the patch and it said there was a problem and asked if I wanted to boot windows into safe mode or boot windows with the latest working configuration... I picked the latter and all worked well.

Either way someone "dropped the ball" and CCP is very likely to be looking to fill an empty slot in there staff soon.  The guy has probably already been sent packing.

I can see them trying to cover this up just like EVERY other time any type of scandal or problem comes along.  That is why you didn't see a report on the front page of the site until just a short time ago.  I would just about lay odds that they will spin it that it wasn't their fault too.  I had tested and played for about a year and can say CCP is very poor on customer service and takes too long when issues arise to solve them.  I had someone steal my login info once (through Eve's own chat room that had been going since beta) and they treated me like I was the one who stole the account.  I had to go through hell just getting my account back and they only restored my character and nothing that I had actually had from the last backup that they had.  I had to start from scratch, but I did as at the time I enjoyed the game.

Things like this and everything that they have pulled and tried to hide since then has made me stay as far away from Eve/CCP as I can.

Actually it's on the front page of the webiste with a link to the official forum thread where all the fixes are posted.  It's also on the front page of the EVE launcher.   Why on earth would you think they'd try to cover it up.  LOL I swear some people baffle me.

I'm pretty pissed about it but I'd rather be part of the solution than part of the problem, in that light here's some advice:

    Easiest fix for MOST users:

Check to see if you were affected by going to:

    • START -> RUN
    • Type: c:oot.ini

If a file opens then you're fine.  If it doesn't then proceed with the following:

    • Go to C:WindowsPSS
    • copy boot.ini.backup to c:
    • rename c:oot.ini.backup to c:oot.ini
    • Reboot
    • All fixed.

If you have ALREADY rebooted just boot from the XP CD and do the same using the command prompt.

Why this works:  Windows makes a backup of all boot files in the windowspss directory.

This is Epic Fail from CCP..

Oh well, i always make use of several partitions, so this didnt affect me..my c: is 8gb (wth 2gb being hibernation-file), and userprofiles, temp etc. are on my partition that gets automatic regular backups on a fileserver of mine..

Im so glad i know so much about Windows-Internals, otherwise my computer would be broken again.. ;)

Both of those done 10-12 hours after the problem was already known and a 17+ page thread had already been started in the forums with no link or mention of it unless you actually went to the forum. The only way most people found out about it before that was from other players ingame.

Sorry, no defense for CCP in any way for this one.

Nah, they'll hold elections to pick community QA representatives from the players and fly them out once a year.    That'll stop anything like this from every happening again.

I lucked out with downloading the full client. CCP will launch a full investigation and fire the right person.  I have to say I feel bad for anyone who lost their OS- but CCP identified the issue and  stop the download.

I downloaded the patch via the game client and did not lose my boot.ini file.

This kind of issue though does not give me warm fuzzies about downloading patches, updates and expansions now or in the future...  The feeling will likely pass as the weeks and months go on of crisis-free gameplay.  Still, there are going to be lots of pissed people and new haters as a result of this fiasco.

Considering the patch went live at approximately 10:30pm their time?  Probably nobody was there that could validate the issue and get the warning up on time.  I agree it should have gone up faster.  I'm not excusing what happened I'm pointing out that they are not trying to hide it.  The previous poster had implied that CCP would try to cover it up.  They haven't.  I was just pointing that out.

Personally I think they should credit everyone who was affected at least 1 month's free gameplay, it's the least they could do.  But I'm not going to call them evil or anything and all the hysteria over this is just assinine.

Honestly ... running an MMO is a 24 hour operation. Time is never an excuse.
