After almost 2 days of downloading the dang game through SOE Loader, I finally got to check it out.
I logged in, created my little Spanish guy because everyone was a pirate. The graphics on max...well, it looked a little outdated. I have duel Geforce 8800 GTX SLI and a pretty bad a$$ machine. Actually you know what it reminded me of? One of those Free To Play Asian MMO's. The swordfighting was boring.....sailing my ship....boring.....able to see across the ocean....stupid....I just can't see this game making it big. Yeah, maybe I didn't play to 20 or 50, but why in Gods name would I want to. I about fell asleep at my keyboard turning my ship so the wind can be behind me. I think I actually watched a whole episode of CSI while my ship was turning. Well, it is a good concept, it just doesn't have the feel of a Pay To Play. It doesn't grab me by the coconuts and pull me back into the world. I logged off and went to the bar. I honestly couldn't believe how long it took Sony Loader to download this. It kept failing and I would have to restart the download. After an hour of scanning all the files it previously downloaded it commenced downloading the patch or the game or whatever it was downloading and took longer than anything I have ever experianced before in my life. Well, time to go uninstall.
I had the feeling I was playing that other Pirate MMO that's out there.....that one is free to play though.
when I read stuff like this, I feel like playing mmos identifies me to the outside world as a retard. sure, some of the missions are easy at the beginning, but what mmo doesn't start you off easy? i've been playing pvp full time since 8, and it kicks ass. and the missions are a fun way to learn new ships.
i did met some guys who don't get how to think 30 seconds in the future, and were frantically trying to find the fireball button, so if you were one of the guys I sunk, sorry for spoiling the game for you.
and what the hell are you going on about being able to see across the sea? have you ever been to the ocean?
Well for me the game was enjoyable, up until about 15-20 hours played. The reason for this is once I got to that point I realized that the game is pretty hollow. Sure it has a great pvp system with ship combat and a well thought out economic system but that is about all it has.
Lol, this is what most poeple complain is lacking in other games...WTF do people want? Obviously, you can't please everyone..er anyone when it comes to MMORPG's lol. Players don't want to do missions, players want to do missions, players don't want to kill stuff for xp, players want to kill stuff for xp. Crafting is nonexistant, crafting is too boring, crafting is too shallow, crafting is too complex, there is no pvp, there is forced pvp, there is no grouping, there is forced grouping, there is no community, the community sucks, the community is good.
I think the only thing we can all agree on is that we disagree on pretty much every aspect of every game ever made or being made. I have not played it, but at least from looking in I can say it is a fresh setting instead of the worn out fantasy land.
Lol, couldn't agree more. The game is rough in alot of areas, but crafting/economy and pvp are the things I personally look for in a game. What I really like is that both these things will require alot of cooperation within societies and the Nations as a whole.
Yup I will agree with this 2 . no matter what any one says about this game im still going to try it for my self
Although I have yet to see this for myself someone wrote that you could see from Florida to Mexico and that it takes only 20 minutes to sail across the whole "world" (game area).
I have only completed the very first tutorial so far, but I found that one encouraging.
It depends on whether you are sailing into the wind or not but generally you can get from one end of the map to the other in about 20 minutes or so. The open sea is more of an abstract than a virtual representation of the world.
For me the game is fun and interesting and I'm excited about the launch. There are things I wish were better but that is true of any MMO i've ever played.
I really like the ship combat and the economy is different than most but I think it has potential.
And as someone pointed out you don't really have to spend any money to get into the Open Beta to take a look. So I say give it a try.
I've only been playing one day, and already I can tell this game isn't for me. It simply feels like 99% of the games out there now, and until someone cracks the current MMO mold, all of them will be the same.
We all know the type...
do missions, get loot, get more powerful so you can progress to the next level...
do missions, get loot, get more powerful so you can progress to the next level...
do missions, get loot, get more powerful so you can progress to the next level...
Rinse and repeat ad nauseam, until you get bored and move on to the next game.
Throw some PvP in there, and then some buying and selling to break a little of the tedium.
In these types of games level 4 feels just like level 40, but simply increase your stats and the stats of your opponents by a certain multiplier.
Oh, I'll say one positive thing about it...it looks pretty.
I will try any game that isn't about elves and orcs nowadays just because I have grown tired of the genre, but alas, this is another one that makes me think that elves and orcs aren't so bad
Being a fan of the PlanetSide structure, I think that should be a way of the future. Where you have leveling, but that isn't the driving force of the game. It simply gives you more choices, but a level 4 is on an even playing field as a level 24 in battle. It's not like you can't even touch a higher level character, or conversly a higher level character cannot simply walk over a lower level charcter and laugh at him while doing it.
Anyway, I digress. Back to PotBS, don't take my word for it, try it for yourself if you haven't already.
POTBS tends to rely less on level than most MMOS. Captains with severl levels between them can participate in battles together without it being completely one sided.
The nation conquest system is also fairly interesting as a PvP system as well. Especially since doing well it in requires a constant flow of ships and outfittings so the economy is very important.
Its a matter of what you like I guess. I neve found PlanetSide all that interesting myself.

If it took longer than 20 minutes to sail across, then the poo poo'ers would complain that takes too long to get from point A to point B. These same people will find something to complain about in every game, makes me wonder why they even bother Hateful people bore me. How about channeling some of that negative energy into climbing the stairs out of the basement and getting some physical activity.

I think much longer than that and it would start to be a huge pain. The game is designed so that you have to move around from one side of the map to the other fairly often. Your Nation's Carribean capital is situated quite a ways from your starter and main economic hubs so as a new player you have to travel through some pretty dangerous waters to get to some of the services only avaiable at your capital port. Later the trip isn't dangerous because of NPCs but can be dangerous becuase many of those ports will be under contention and pvp combat will be going on. Avoiding being attacked means weaving in and out of pvp areas carefully or travelling with a convoy of ships
SOE is involved with it. This is enough to keep me very far away.
I'm far past trying to have rational discussions with people who make statements like yours. So I'll just leave it at sorry you won't get to experience Pirates of the Burning Sea.
so many people go on about "oh... well wait till the later levels, it'll get better!"
well i dont want to pay for something that i have to wait a month to actually enjoy, or longer, if i decide to take my time.
seriously... i buy a game for console cause i want to enjoy it right away, or a movie... or well... ANYTHING else, i dont buy something so i can stab myself in the eye for the first 25 hours of play.
"And after blizzard takes over the world, they are gonna gather a bunch of lemmings, sit on their fat asses near a cliff, and watch the little fuzzy bastards suicide dive into the ground below. . . . . all just for their own entertainment."

I agree with you. A game shouldn't make you wait to have fun.
I didn't find this game boring at lower levels. I found lower levels quite intersting and compelling.
I didn't like the avatar combat at first. It grew on me a bit. I think it needs to be better. The ship combat though was just fantastic to me and I was hooked the first time I got behind the wheel...

Ditto, SOE has a bad rep from word of mouth and media focus over the past few years. I know POTB won't have strong subscription numbers, let alone how long it'll last. I feel this way about POTB and Tabula Rasa, both games wouldn't keep me interested for any longer than 2-3 months.
About the NGE comments, I bet you if WoW went to twitch based pseudo-FPS overnight they'd lose about 6 mil subscribers or more. When I played the old SWG, I was paying for the game I wanted to play but when the NGE was shoved into my SWG folder one day, I said "I'm not paying for this".

I wish there were more games like Planetside, a BR6 can kill a BR24/CR5 in battle since everyone had equal chance, battle rank just gave you points to buy more variety in what you equip/use and command rank just increases your global communication skills plus an orbital strike.
game is really bad...Ill list 1 or 2 things why so i dont get in trouble 1. too many instances 2. you can see across the sea..LOL'z 3. melee combat is about as fun as getting a root canal SOE will be bailing it out within 6 months of release is my prediction, its that boring.
Actually, your analysis makes me WANT to try it now.
Sooo....Cerion...
Have you tried it now? Big enough to admit maybe just because some people dont have time to write books here that they can be right, and not just asshats trying to persuade others not to try a MMO?
Did you waste 50 bucks even though I was nice and tried to warn you not to? Anything you'd like to say such as, "gee Mr Mccoyy..you were right and I was wrong, and truthfully, i DID waste 50 bucks and now I guess, I'm the asshat"
sec..../deep breath....AHHHH that felt good....
Hate to say I told ya so...
P.S. Also hate to say I told ya so....but I can spot arrogance a mile away....it shouldnt surprise anyone why you dont see Dev's post here any longer...when an arrogant braggert loses at something or is wrong...they go away quietly with their tail between their legs....oh, and believe me..its not because they dont visit here from time to time...they do.
Tell me you didn't wait 4 months to drag this up so you could post an "I told you so" type post and flame Cerion....
Eh, why not? I mean come on, after three months game cloes 2/3 of its servers and there are people ready to argue what a great idea that is and it absoultely has nothing to do with POTBS performing poorly.

Because:
1. It's kind of creepy to think that it bothered someone so much that they felt the need to bring the topic back up after 4 months.
2. It's not a very classy thing to do. I'll never understand people who take delight in seeing MMOs struggle or fail. It seems like a very immature attitude.

Good points, my post was a rather weak tongue in cheek more then anythign else. I agree with 1. but 2. is a different matter. Despite the thread title no-one needs to waste their money as its Open Beta & free
