Shhh... word from a friend of a friend on the inside says look for Starcraft. In the convo with her, she clearly stated two key points. First that the announcement of developing a "next-gen" means it will be an advancement of a previous title. Second, the strength of PvP play which is ever important to the fan base has strongest potential within Starcraft. As I've seen from the various posts most Blizzard patriots are thinking that way and this is probably why. Expect the project to take 4 to 5 years to release.

lol Next gen has nothing to do with working on a previous title. Vanguard was supposed to be a next gen game ( bad example but it is true ).

I hate to state it, but its already been said blizzard is working on code name "project hydra" and it was most likely to be diablo3 in mmo format. I've played a lot of diablo and this news has been out there for awhile.  If you dont believe me, google "project hyrda blizzard"

All i have to say is that Blizzard is a expirienced team and no doubt that they will make something cool even for a little time enjoyable

Apparently  Activision acquired the rights to the Star Trek franchise from Interplay, and then sued Viacom for not promoting the franchise properly with continued movies (and thus cutting into their licensing profits.)

    http://www.startrek-gamers.com/history12.htm

Anyone know  which company currently holds the rights for  the Star Trek franchise license?  Because if Activision still has the rights...

(and yes, I know Perpetual had rights to develop a MMO game - but different companies can develop titles within a licensed franchise - I'm looking at you Star Wars)

EDIT:  shut my mouth - I've just answered my own question - never mind.  Bethseda has the rights.

They would never do that. A Diablo MMO would be to similar to WoW. I think they will try something completely new, and I don't think it's Starcraft either.

    Diablo III: The Sin Wars.

read the books, i believe you'll find enough material to guess that's where and when we are going to play in. Yes it's before Diablo I and II, it's with the great wars where it'll be easier to have several factions running and the vast wars to witness many eye candies between heaven and hell.

I myself am atleast hoping fore Diablo III, even though the team that made D I and D II, left long ago and now known as Flagship studios (hellgate: london) and Arena Net (Guild wars).

But since we are talking about Blizzard here, i wouldn't bee too surprised if they could revive it in a shape that's maybe even better or atleast feels like it was made by the same or better.

Maybe Starcraft maybe totally new, i just hope for D3 so bad, the series was great so trying out the sin wars era would be awesome.  =)

While I would love the concept of having a Starcraft MMO, I just don't see how it could be pulled off effectively. The only thing that would make sense would be an FPS style of MMO, and that would seem impossible to balance due to the units on the 3 sides having inherit power differences. Diablo would make a nice choice if it weren't for the fact that basically all the abilities in WoW are near clones of the ones found in Diablo. So it would basically just be WoW in a different setting.

It seems like they would either have to come up with a new IP, make an MMO using one of Activision's IPs, or perhaps just port WoW to a next-gen console.

If they pick starcraft or diablo.....and tone it down to a teen title they get nothing from me but the finger.

Warcraft already became more and more a 'gore' free game that just shouted 'somebody please think about the childern!', don't take my word on this compare 'warcraft : Human versus Orcs' and it's sequel and compare it to the last series of RTS and especially the MMO and you cannot deny it.

Either make a good game and stay true to the IP or don't make anything at all, preferably ever again if you keep filtering it....to give moralist a game.....i hope they die....who cares about morals in a game......

I'm guessing its geared towards the story of starcraft.

Correct, it would make no sense whatsoever for Blizzard to create another medieval MMO but it would make perfectly sense to enter the Sci-Fi MMO Market, that's why my bet is on World of Starcraft.

  • OuZiOuZi Member Posts: 22

Well, like many people i think blizzard should and will break into the sci-fi market. however its been stated they wont be following any current titles, making me think that while the game is going to be sci-fi based, it wont be world of starcraft

but more something FPS BASED set on some post apocolyptic planet somewhere, with the normal raiding, grinding and unbalanced pvp

    SU anyone? starcraft universe =/

  • EcranomicalEcranomical Member Posts: 326

Why is everyone suggesting a starcraft mmo, simple logic dictates that it wont be; simply put, they're already making starcraft 2. SC2 will hold an audience for god know how long, so why would they create another game that would take away from that audience - SC2 would've been created in vain.

So logic dictates it wont be a starcraft game.

Diablo maybe? I hope it is, then i'll give a blizzard mmo a try.

  • WeareweareWeareweare Member UncommonPosts: 195

Yeah Diablo would make perfect sense for this mystery mmo, i just want a starcraft mmorpg because im a greedy starcraft fan. I think blizzard could take the experience from WoW and make a kick butt diablo 3 mmorpg. Hopefully no money each month, i'd definitely buy it.

  • HackerZCHackerZC Member Posts: 17

I'm hoping for either Starcraft (first pick), or Diablo.

Not really anything else I'm interested in from blizzard.

I'm afraid your logic is flawed. Why would Blizzard want to develop another fantasy MMORPG that would directly compete with WoW? It doesn't make good business sense. Besides, Bliz has already stated in the past that the Diablo universe is not very well fleshed out for something as big as an MMORPG.

Let's look at some of the events of the past to support a Starcraft MMORPG:

    1. Starcraft Ghost was not cancelled because it was crap. It was cancelled because the "powers that be" and those who tested it internally thought the game play would be awesome for an MMORPG rather than a console game. Since Bliz has pretty much unlimited financial resources at this point, they could afford to scrap Starcraft Ghost and use what they had to start developing an MMORPG instead.

    2. WoW was released after the success of Warcraft III. Starcraft II will soon be released and Bliz has confirmed that another MMORPG, not related to WoW, was in the works. See a pattern?

    3. The Korean market alone would devour a Starcraft MMORPG. Starcraft is a national treasure in South Korea. What better way to make more money than Bill Gates than to make an MMORPG based in the Starcraft universe? It's a great business venture and the next logical step for Blizzard.

There's no doubt a Starcraft MMORPG would do great world wide. It's a very well known universe with a very fleshed out history (like Warcraft). A Starcraft MMORPG would not cannibalize the WoW crowd. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard offered a package subscription deal to play both games, kind of like The Station at Sony. Bottom line - a Starcraft MMORPG makes the most logical business sense. Period.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

    Bad logic.

You are correct to a certain extent that a dual release could potentially splinter sales of the two games, you are forgetting three very important points:

    1) You need to keep in mind that MMO's and RTS' apeal to different audiences. Yes there is a cross market base of fans of the license who will play both, but in general MMO and RTS gamers come from two different camps.

    2) The chance of both SC2 and an SC MMO coming out at (or even remotely near) the same time frame is well.... lets just say you are more likely to be struck by lightning (twice) while holding a winning 300mil$ lottery ticket as you screw Milla Jovavich. Assuming SC2 comes out in '08, it will likely have been out 3 or more years before an SC MMO was released.

    3) Everyone has been wanting an SC MMO since They announced they were making a Warcraft MMO. I can't remember how many times I've seen people say they would have liked to have an SC MMO instead.

However, I agree that Diablo is the most likely candidate. We have not seen nor heard anything from the license in a VERY long time. Diablo 2 did VERY well, so for there not to be anything else to it would be a shame.

Also I'm reminded of the fact that Blizzard likes to screw with people. What better way to do that then making everyones mouths water for an SC MMO (what everyone really wants), they f*** us all over by instead coming out with ANOTHER fantasy based MMO. It's not bad enough fantasy crap already litters the game store shelves... but for a developer to have two fantasy based franchises out at the same time is... well it's retarded as hell, but very typical of the gaming industry. It's like a starbucks across from a starbucks (which exist).

So, while I want SC... I think it will be Diablo, for the simple reason that while SC would be the SMART option, the gaming industry has repeatedly demonstrated how lacking they are in basic intelligence.

So Diablo... because I think Blizzard are too stupid to make SC.

Seriously with titles like Pitfall and Mechwarrior now available due to the merger with Activision, why not think outside the box a little?

    Personally I'm voting for a Battletech/Mechwarrior MMO!

Both would be rockin'! I doubt this is the case, though. The merger with Activision is too recent and Bliz has been working on this new MMO for a couple of years, now (I heard rumblings about this new MMORPG ~2 years ago).

Since Blizzard so good at taking a successful MMO and upgrade it to make it even more popular rather than make something totally from its own idea.. the current MMO that could be copy it is EVE? maybe they will make another space flight MMORPG attempt to create another sand box?

    Naaaa.. Not blizzard

    Cartoon fest Starcraft

I would first consider the IP's they own, the obvious 2 being Diablo and StarCraft.   I realize how big Diablo is (was), but look at where the MMO market is really targetted at this point.  It's not the US.  The major market going forward will be the Asian market(s).  And look at what StarCraft has done in that area of the world.  Again, I'm not knocking Diablo... but what StarCraft has done there is incredible.  Blizzard launcing TBC in that market and announcing that the game will launch soon in 'Russia'... I would lean more heavily towards StarCraft, if it's a choice out of the two.

Then I would look at the company they just purchased... and what IP's they hold in their stable.  Perhaps a reason for the purchase was a project that was underway?  The new hires at Blizzard will be used to continue and perhaps get the project truly underway.  I won't begin to speculate at which game(s) they could choose.  I'm sure there are people who post here on the site with better idea's about that than I would have.

    ...

Does Blizzard have an 'in' to the Superhero genre at all?  With DC and Marvel games in the works, is Blizzard left out of dealings in that arena?

I hope it will be World of Starcraft.
Sure it seems much harder to make than a World of Diablo, but with SC2 to clear the way and the succes of WoW it is almost too easy for Blizzard.

    Predictions (more or less realistic):
    - The 3 races will be subdivided into factions before SC2 is over.
    - A 4th race will emerge, perhaps orc-like.
    - PvP in WoS will have several roles (not only healers, tank, dps), like Commanders, squad leaders and regular troops.

    Add yours :)
