I wouldn't go so far as to say Starcraft online, but there are a couple of reasons to think that it might be a Sci-Fi.

First off, whatever they develop, I doubt they would want it to compete with there own game, so I think you can rule out the fantasy genre.

Secondly, they do have a little experience in the Sci-Fi genre with Starcraft.  I mean they already have a bunch of artists and stuff that are quite good at making futuristic looking weapons and vehicles and such.  It doesn't necessarily have to be Starcraft online to make heavy use of their existing talent.

Third and maybe the most important is that the Sci-Fi genre is largely untapped and just waiting for someone with enough money, talent and creative energy to swoop in and take it over.  Hmmmm....I wonder who that might be?

If I were an Activision-Blizzard investor, I'd be saying "make it happen".

Actually I don't know why people really think this.  Diablo II was a Blizzard North thing and a lot of those folks left the company.  In fact you could say in some respects Diablo III is already here and it's called Hellgate: London.

Personally I would love to see blizzard make a sci-fi game! Like a starcraft MMO.. I enjoy playing space, type futuristic games.

I personally dont think it will be another fantasy game, they've already made one.. (world of warcraft)..

    with WoTLK upcoming for blizzard,

    Starcraft 2 upcoming for blizzard,

I bet it will be something totally different.. but sci-fi none the less..

Personally, i enjoyed playing Diablo and D2, but im not into it (again just my opinion).. and plus hellgate london is/was enough for me..

But i'm excited to see what it will be :D

Blizzard is by far my favorite!

I highly doubt people are tired of the fantasy genre. What I do believe is that people are tired of run of the mill fantasy games that just copy off the last successful one. If someone were to release a ground breaking fantasy themed MMO then you probably wouldn't be complaining.

I know what Blizzard is planning.

Its an Office place MMO based around the various staff positions one might expect at a generic office.  First there will be the all purpose love child class (paralegal), the crowd control class (secretary) the damage dealer class (human resources) the tank class (customer service) the long range class (fax assistant) and the healer (janitor).  These classes will embark on a thrilling and engaging adventure that many will find parallels their own life as they fight off creditors, seek a reliable vehicle, and triumph over the forces of conformity.

Expected to be out around 2011.

If you are not being responded to directly, you are probably on my ignore list.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Blizzard has already said that the "Next Gen MMO" in development is not Starcraft.

WoW started development at around the same time Warcraft 3 did. This new MMO won't be released for a long time.

Believe it or not, I'd actually play that lol! will we get to bash mobs "The boss" with a mop or broom if we play the janitor class? lol! Do we heal our team mates with dirty mop water?

I think it would be great if Blizzard made a si-fi MMO for there next title. Though it will probably just be WoW with a different skin and lasers.

As to Fantasy style MMOs being dead and SI-FI MMOs being the future i can only say this. Click on the game list section at the top of the page and you will see that most developers disagree with you.

OH, i remember the day that WoW came out and introduced the world to the genre of MMOs. If only we had MMOs to play before WoW came out, wouldnt  that have been nice.

    first post btw

but you got me wondering, what happened to SC Ghost, was it canceled or just delayed?

And ya sci-fi > fantasy last few years has been total overkill.

  • TerranahTerranah Member UncommonPosts: 3,575

Uh oh.  I just had a kind of disturbing thought.  What if Blizzard's new game was sci fi with elves and goblins.....

They would not be the first ones to add the two genre's together.  Last time I was at the bookstore the sign above some book cases read, "Science Fiction / Fantasy".  Maybe it's an omen....

I believe the term was "put on ice", like Funcom's Midgard some years ago. I guess it means "canned, but we reserve the right to redesign it completely at a later time".

I mean after years of World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online and Vanguard - Saga of Fanbois it is clear to see that people are sick and tired of the fantasy genre.

So there we got all of these mmo companies who try to copy and paste World of Warcraft's success, (even from the Science Fiction Genre/ Star Wars Galaxies)
So lets keep one thing in mind: Blizzard already made a statement that there won't be a sequel of World of Warcraft.
And we read on mmorpg.com today that Blizzard is developing a new mmo. It might be rumor, but it it likeley that Blizzard is not just sitting on its arse, watching upcoming titles coming that could hurt World of Warcraft.
And if Blizzard was planning a new fantasy genre mmo then it would be World of Warcraft 2, which they already said won't happen.
Blizzard was number 1, is number1 and will be number 1 in 2008 as well.
So what else could it be then except Starcraft Online ?

My guess is that with Starcraft2, Blizzard is trying to lead our interest on what their next big mmo is...
The Fantasy Genre is over! Let the science fiction begin...
Actually it is not clear to see. Your statement actually supports the opposite. Years of these games and people still play by the millions. How is that "clear to see"? lol

The fantasy genre will never go out of style in the gaming world.

That said: I prefer Starcraft and futuristic over swords and sorcery any day. PLEASE let their new game be World of Starcraft!!!!!!

I think people who clearly can't see that the new game is Diablo3 in some form are very delusional. Just google blizzard project hydra.

    I am very delusional. Why:

It is too similar to WoW they would not compete with themselves imho

The original poster has a point swords magic mana health -please - it's been done Blizz is smart enough to know this

Project Hydra would point more to SC Online as the hydralisk is an mmo creature.

  • dwillpowerdwillpower Member Posts: 97

At one point last year. Blizzard indirectly said they were working on starcraft2 and diablo3. This was before the announcement of starcraft2. Now here comes diablo3. And a hydra is an actual thing in Diablo.  Blizzard has already promised diablo fans that another one is coming.  Now to find that article.  You would think starcraft2 would be enough for you nutz.

How about a Diablo Online? I'd LOVE to make an armored Necro and run around with a group of elementals and skeletal warriors at my beck and call!

    Ok. Heres the link www.videogamesblogger.com/2006/08/25/blizzard-chief-hints-at-starcraft-2-and-diablo-3.htm

Clearly he said they will continue the diablo franchise.  One title would be the new WoW expansion, one was starcraft 2 and ding dong....last one diablo3.

Whatever it is it's going to be crap.  As the basic game design goes Blizzard is severely... shall we say lacking in talent. What they're good at is polish, and that is the only thing WoW has over the competition. I don't think Bliz new mmorpg  will stand a snowflake's  chance in hell against another developer who can afford that amount of polish. They've probably hired their EQ creeps to do the basic game design... the types of guys we used to laugh at during old pen-and-paper days, the  fussy ones obsessed with "levels" and acting out in funny voices and calling it role-playing. Meh.

BTW Pappy13 any MMO game Blizzard creates sci fi or fantasy will directly compete with WoW.   Its the nature of the beast, so its completely with in the realm of possibilities its another fantasy game.  Though I'm still leaning for something more sci fish... and praying its not Diablo.  (because while i love diablo...i don't love it that much!)
