free 2 play Vs Pay 2 play

HousamHousam Member Posts: 1,460

this year saw a rise to a huge amount of free 2 play mmorpg's , some people love them some people hate them .

i personaly hate free 2 play mmorpg's.....i prefer the traditonal pay to play game......

cos they have a better service, more (and better quality) expansions and updates, and they uaully have a more mature comunity (except for WoW)

also imo most f2p mmorpg are really poorly made...and have an anoying playing comunity......

Whats your openion :)

    i agree with u...

Personally, I prefer pay 2 play rather than free 2 play. Yes, most free 2 play are poorly made but that doesn't really matter for me... the thing is that they are the majority the same, with no new content. However, the are some that are worth the time playing... (just a few)

My only foray into free to play has been 2moons.

I spent more money on that game in 2 months than i would have if I had purchased a full time game and subscribed.

There are a handful of aspects about the game that I appreciate.   There is an endless list of annoyances and design flaws.

My vote goes for pay to play.

It's like comparing a cheap beer like Meister Brau to a bottle of 1956 Golden Seal Jack Daniels.

Yes, the Jack wins hands down, but sometimes you and your buddies are broke. Or you have spent your cash on a lot of other stuff, and the drinks were just an afterthought for a few laughs.

Sure, the first few levels err I mean drinks, can be kinda rough.  But then after a while, with the right group of friends, it's alright. I'll take the premium stuff over the cheap stuff anyday; but I like having the cheap stuff around for the times I just want something without breaking my wallet.

And it's usually better with a few buds drinking err gaming with ya then going at it by yourself, in which case you're bored easily.

It depends what you are talking about.

The slew of low budget Asian games or some of the ones (Asian and western) that actually make an effort. There are many free to play that are worth the time to many players.

Perfect World has everything and more then any pay to play in terms of scope and features.

There is Anarchy online. A game with more depth and far more developed them most games out right now.

Silk Road continues to be one of the most played MMO's on XFire stats. Pretty grindy but has a lot of scope to it once you get up there.

Dungeon Runners is a hoot, Space Cowboy was a lot of fun for awhile. Guild Wars is basically free to play. I don't see any issues with that one. Its not a traditional MMO but that doesn't make it a bad game. To bad Hellgate didn't work out so well.

Generally I don't get involved long term with free to play games, I keep getting suckered into believing the hype of games like Vanguard and they will somehow be better and worth a monthly fee.

Most F2P games are crap. there are, however some that are decent (and listed above)

I would consider Guild Wars the best F2P game out there. Some people dont consider this F2P because you have to pay for the game itself (but no monthly subscription). It all depends on what your definition of F2P is.

Disagree many p2p have immature players base updates sucks, while some f2p have a nice mature playerbase with good updates.

I have found that most F2P games are very casual player friendly and usually pretty solo friendly as well. Some suck some are great. The same thing can be said for the P2P games.

I got sick of playing MMO's that feel like a second job and yet I have to pay them. A grind is a grind and every game has them. I dont think P2P games up to this point do a better job of hiding the grind. You would have to be blind if you cant see the grind in the most popular P2P games right now.

Customer service in F2P games can be really bad but once again P2P isnt much better at times.

I dont go looking for either type of game. I like to try them all. I dont really have a preference either way. I do think that F2P games are bunched together and seen as lesser games by a lot of gamers. That they are all some how inferior to P2P games. I think people should judge a game by whatever standards they consider to be fun not by how you pay for it.

I perfer the traditional P2P games as well. I've tried some of the F2P games and while they aren't all necesarily BAD, they don't live up to what P2P games do, in terms of service, updates, content..ETC...This whole micro-transaction thing makes me a little nervous, as well...It's definantly not for me, and I don't really wanna see this genre move more twords that than the traditional subscription services.

"Free to play" meaning "pay for items"? then thanks no thanks.

Free 2 play usually means crap

  • DhaemanDhaeman Member Posts: 531

    All the same. Equally bad.

I could care less if it's item mall or subscription supported as I can afford either just as easily. I'd expect to see more innovation from a P2P game though so I guess it is about one notch above the F2P brethren. For the most part, I honestly don't understand why people think P2P games are of such higher quality. They are really all the same other than the poor translations.

    Don't hate on engrish

Item Mall MMOs are balanced towards the Item Mall. They all have items that increase your experience gain but that doesn't do you a lot of good because most will take days of heavy grinding past level 20. So, you buy these items over and over to alleviate the hurdle that is 75 million experience required to level up to level 73. Next problem being, level 245 is the maximum level.

Item Mall MMOs are rip off in terms of both money and time.

Well there is a huge difference generally and it can be pointedly described with one word, "Content".

The free to play games don't have it and the pay to play generally do.  While there are some free to play games that are not bad, you will be bored with any of them after a months play.

There are only 3 games (my opinion) worth playing that are F2P.Shaiya,Perfect World,Maple story. Those are the only games worth playing(IMO) out of the dozens of F2Ps. I prefer P2P. Most F2Ps have bad communities. WoW has a decent community. A lot of nice people in WoW but some pricks. I was watching my 9 year old sister play runescape today. A guy ran up to her saying. U WHORE. I POOR CHOCLATE FUDGE DOWN U PUSSY. Bad grammar, Bad spelling. Made my eyes hurt. Those were the exact words he said. He then bothered everyone and my sister by yelling out random derogatory messages. My sister was in falador. I see one of her friends gave her a black skirt(G). She was very happy. but the SAME guy(level 3) was running around falador saying MY CAOK IS BIG.(You know what "caok" means). Damn the bad communities.

For me, the quality of a game has little to do with its cost. P2P MMOs, however, have higher production values than F2P, thus are more likely to be polished. When it comes down to it, though, my preferred MMOs are determined by their core design ideologies.

Well The younger generation seems to like item malls. They can play for free. They can put money in to look cooler than other people.

They are going to grow up on that subscription model.

We tend to stick with what we know works. Thats why all you schmucks are resistant to cash shops. For us thats how the asians did it. Thats not what quality titles do.

For younger audiences. They played what they could get their hands on. They might not have been able to get a p2p game off store shelves and get their parents to fork out the monthly fee up front.

But getting a free game, then hassling your mom for 5 bucks to get yourself a new shirt ingame seems a little more managable. Especially since you can play even without tossing in the money. This keeps the games populated so people are more likely to play.

You personally might not like em, but they are a growing trend in some of the more sucessful games right now.

Well it depends, I prefer p2p like WoW, EQ2, etc... But I've really enjoyed playing on WoW private servers. F2P are not appealing if you enjoy good graphics and a good community.

You get what you pay for...generally speaking. I'm glad the kids prefer F2P games. Makes for fewer of them in the games I play.

I prefer P2P.i'm a "kid". I don't like F2P because everyone lacks intelligence. 3/4 of the F2P population doesn't even have the intellectual power of half a rock unfortunately.

The gap in quality between F2P and P2P games is far greater than the price gap. Even as a poor college student with over 70 grand in outstanding student loans, I can still scrape together $15 every month for a subscription and still pay rent, utilities, and eat.

I understand that F2P games have their novelty, especially to the younger crowd; what I don't understand is why someone who owns a computer and can afford monthly internet access wouldn't put out $15 every month to play a quality game instead of one of those free Korean games.

QFT. When I was 9 I was tired of playing free in runescape. Done all quests, pwnt, enough in PVP, full rune, experienced everything in runescape for free members. I had more than enough money to pay for runescape membership. And so I did. I now play WoW some GW and i'm still very young.
