why would a company not want to know the truth behind a massive failure of a game?
Does SOE not care about profits and want to improve any product they sell?
Are there just some REALLY stupid execs at the company that don't get it and underlings are pulling the wool over their eyes? Or do they answer to LA ultimately and do not want to blame the failure of the game on themselves and their NGE failure?
Any exec should be listening to people in boards like this, not the lame kids who are mad cause a BH killed them once so they want them nerfed.
And for the record.. yeah I am bitter about the CU and NGE... SWG was a perfect game in my opinion. Even pre-JTLS I thought it was a lot of fun.
Well part of the problem is... I remember Smed posting about stuff that happened at a Fanfaire... and his words were to the effect of:
"Once we got past the "there will be no rollback we were able to have a discussion".
My thought was... wtf was there left to discuss...
The thing that has always pissed me off is hearing..
SWG was bleeding subs before the CU... and people telling me how it was so.
I took a 30 to 60 day vacation when WoW launched to try.. hit 60 quit and came back.
Now after EQ2 launched and just before I tried WoW I had noticed on Starsider that there were less people. Well in general when a new game(s) launch people try them...
Anyway I came back from WoW and Starsider had more people than I had EVER seen (yes including right after launch).
The amount of people in Coronet and Theed alone was probably more than are on ALL servers at their highest peaks these days. The game was alive..
The thing started to bleed subs when a CU was launched that wasn't what we were promised (along with Gordon Walton vanishing because it wasn't the CU he promised). The NGE was just the next logical direction to bleed more subs.
They don't need stats... they don't need a research company... If they can't rollback because LA won't let them whatever...
If they don't rollback or open classic servers because they are stupid... well.. F... them.
If Mythic can run a classic server, Co-Op (no pvp) server, Full PvP server and ToA server... And SOE can't run two versions.. there is something wrong.
Open one classic server.. if it flops oh well you can't possibly do worse than they are now. If it fills up open another... blah blah /rehash of the same thing billionth time
This has always been the most frustrating things about their (shallow) attempts to appease the playerbase, that they NEVER have had an honest, open, "ALL options are on the table" discussion. They never have compromised on the existance of the NGE itself, only basically on trivialities within it.
Smed takes a spin on the classic "other than the murder of your husband, how did you like the play, Mrs Lincoln?" approach which is, "other than giving you your game back and getting rid of the NGE, what form of the NGE will you accept?".
Which is why SWG sports maybe 25K paying customers instead of 250K, and why everything has been downhill for SOE ever since.
They truly are NOT sorry about anything other than that they didn't get away with the NGE and didn't draw in tons of new subscribers. Smed doesn't give a flying F--k about the players.
Really, when the NGE failed and their half hearted efforts at adjusting it instead of rolling it back also failed, he hoped that it'd eventually just blow over. It hasn't, and has resulted in PERMANENT, IRREVERSABLE damage to both his and his company's reputation and is affecting their other efforts as well.
That is what prompted Smed to issue yet another half assed (like everything else he does) pseudo apology in 2007. Trust me. SOE hasn't "gotten over it" either. And they never will.
The really sad thing is they could open classic servers TODAY and still turn things around to a large degree, why, because we LOVED our game... And that's why in many ways I hope they aren't smart enough to do it, I really don't want to give them any money, even if it is for the old game back. They don't deserve it. Nor did they deserve US, the most loyal and fanatical player base that ever existed.

Yeah, I gotta agree. That right there is probably the single most important comment concerning SWG.

Peaple are starvng for something different and pre-CU SWG mabe the cure to what ails us in this genre.
The End would be best ,but "I am a man of my word" . The same way that I promise not to legally persue my disatisfaction with SOE for allowing me to return to the game all be it the NGE. I have since stated that the SWG player character ,Jestor Rodo would remain voice and persistent until the end ( which will happen) or a pre CU server is made available by SOE (Too stubborn to happen). If only one quarter return to SWG for a preCU server it would be another 9 million a year for SOE...not enough , I am afraid.
SOE is a rotten tree waiting for that windstorm that topples it. They have maybe a year of life left as a development house if the DCMMO fails (oh, and they are looking once again for a lead producer, they've gone through three that I can recollect). They can't hold a dev team together because of excessive micromanagement by Smed and his knuckle dragging cohorts.
The game that MUST save SOE is going to do anything but.
Besides, SOE is going to get sold well before that game comes out.
Not me. When I canceled, that was it. I put up with well over a year of the lies, the misstatements, the misunderstandings, the miscommunication, and the two-faced, weaselly, bait n' switch tactics of Thunderheart, and all the other SWG devs. The amount of bungling that went on in SWG on the part of SOE, and to a lesser degree LA was staggering.
They promised, promised, and promised, and they ALWAYS screwed it up one way or another. From launch day, SWG was ran by incompetent jackasses, and it only got worse from there.
I mean, Jesus. There were so many times when it was just such baldfaced lying on SOE's part, it was disgusting. And if it wasn't a baldfaced lie, it was utter ineptitude. That could explain why Sony's game division is in the red. My experience with SWG has totally altered my opinion of Sony as a company. And coincidently, the same company responsible for those millions of laptop battery recalls.
Typical example of the lackadaisical effort SWG always got from it's devs. Bugs were never fixed, patches were always late, promised content was never implemented. Now, nearly 2 years after the NGE, this is finally added. Disgusting and Laughable.
Bleeding subs? not as far as i can tell from playing the game. Gaining subs? yes definately, have seen it myself, many new and old faces are subscribing, it gets better every day

I'll have to disagree with that.
About 6 months ago it was relatively common to find 3 servers at "heavy" at 9PM Est. At the beginning of December it was only for a short period of time at approximately 10PM Est when 1 server would hit "heavy".
There may have been some people comming back to check out the newest chapter but I'd bet it's just the same cirulation of people (for the most part anyway) looking in to see the changes then moving on again.
I think it'll ebb and flow like that for a while, but gradually the surge in population will be less and less.
At the time I quit for the last time it was like that. There was a Ch6 surge for beast master, Bloodfin and a couple other servers would hit "heavy". A month later this was no longer the case.
And you are right that interest is continuing to wane. That's why they've ratcheted up the free trials again and introduced the inane "buddy system", which was a complete waste of time for them to code. I wouldn't try to get my friends to play SWG, I'd prefer to keep them as friends.
I would just about guarantee that the majority of the buddy system rewards claimed are by those stupid enough to pay for a month on a trial account just to get them.
And that won't be that many people, and those accounts aren't real and won't remain, so it accomplishes nothing.
Bleeding subs? not as far as i can tell from playing the game. Gaining subs? yes definately, have seen it myself, many new and old faces are subscribing, it gets better every day

Interest is simply wanning.
There are many who simply return to check out the latest publish, but i was referring to those who are coming and staying, both new and old players. The old players who come back dont think the game is suddenly brilliant, of course not, but they do get enjoyment out of playing it and being back, they've learnt to like it.
There are a lot of people in this post spouting out numbers like 50,000 subs lost in the first 24 hours after NGE. I haven't been able to find any data to back up those claims, however, a fairly accurate website:
mmogdata.voig.com
presents somewhat accurate informational charts about subscription numbers in games. Check it out.
I'm not sure exactly when the NGE took place, but according to that website, ever since February 2005, the subscription numbers have steadily gone down with the major drops occurring:
Feb-Mar2005: 41,000 subscriptions lost (Appr. 14% of total)
Mar-Apr2007: 121,000 subscriptions lost (Appr. 71% of total)
Again, I'm not exactly sure how accurate these numbers are and I can't vouch for them, but from other MMO's I've played and sub numbers I've seen this, particular website is the most accurate I've been able to find on the web.
My source for that claim doesn't come from MMOGDATA or Sir Bruce's now defunct site. The main reason why on those graphs SWG stayed over 100K for as long as it shows is that the numbers weren't updated in a timely manner.
I was informed that SWG literally had 100K cancellations in the first week of the NGE. If you will recall, the account servers kept crashing/not working at that time.
SWG had 254,000 subscribers at the time they announced the NGE.
It had less than 150K by January 2006.
The CU lost them roughly 40K subs over a period of 5 months (295K down to 254K).
The NGE lost them more than that the first day.
In fact, more people canceled the first day of the NGE than the game currently has paying subscribers.
I just quit SWG finally after 3 years due to lack of popualtion and bitter and quite rude players on Ecplise and really witha ll the abuse and childish behavior in the game now and trinkets to grind endlessly for now Im glad I left along with my 4 accounts and to make sure i really left i gave everything to a buddy that remains there. I moved on to EVE Online which my interest in sci-fi MMorpgs has sparked interest again sorry to say SWG is dead too little too late. Only people left now are just vets that are poking their head in for a quick look and leaving again last of the original die hards and the sploiters since SOE doesnt even take a stance on cheating anymore in game exploits are more common now "hacked stats" etc and just really bitter people that just need to quit and get a life.... this game had really good potential now its the poor cousin of WOW.....
Before the NGE, the communities on Lowca and Tarquinas were great, lots of activities around the galaxy and plenty of PvP but now both servers are a mess. There was a "thinking of transferring from Bloodfin" thread in the Tarquinas forums recently and almost everyone replied "this place isn't good, stay where you are" with statements like people being assholes and tumbleweed everywhere- Not even the current players are too happy with the servers they play on most of the time. Chilastra is the only server I hear positive things about, but then again that's mostly Obraik.
Bleeding subs? not as far as i can tell from playing the game. Gaining subs? yes definately, have seen it myself, many new and old faces are subscribing, it gets better every day
Another "NGE" nooblet to SWG who is making up crap-tastic facts from thin air.
-Fact: Only 1 server is hitting Heavy for 1hr maybe two to three times a week. Only on saturday for 3hrs.
-Fact: They removed the population counters when CU hit to remove woe&wim posts about the game dying. Because lets face it, when you actually see how many players are playing on your server it can change your mood for the entire gaming day.
-Fact: Only NGE "fanbois" are supporting SWG now after all the crap-spiffy-do they have done to the game to return shit they stole from us with the NGE.
+Point #1: They removed BM only to return it to us in a chopped up shit riddled mannerwithout any "real" customizability. Wow, I can color my pet and "maybe" change how my pet does dmg by a couple of worthless for-show percentages. "OH EM GEE, MY BANTHA DOES 4% MORE DMG THAN YOURS". Worthless shit, SWG EMU ftw and I hope all of you support a server if your an SWG vet.
+Point #2: They got rid of Bio-Engineering only to return it to us in a worthless shit riddled manner mixed in with "Beast Mastery Expertise", or BME, AKA: Big Mistake Express. BE can ONLY make pets now and nothing like they could before.
+Point #3: They returned the village for a Pseudo-Quest system revolving around "Epic Encounters" that can be done with a fullgroup of JedidiahEasyPleasyThanx.
+Point #4: They completely stripped away customizability of jedi with the NGE via making robes the ONLY form of protection for them. There have been rumors that Chapter 9 will be giving jedi "innate" defences so they can, once again, wear their own customizable clothing.
-Fact: The game is NO LONGER a SandBox Enviroment. You can't just drop a box, criss cross your specialization, and become anything you want anymore (ie: Swordsman, Pikeman, Pistoleer "if you wanted"). The old SandBox system rewarded intelligence and understanding of complex combinations and how they worked together. Now the game is so dumbed down I could shit myself and they would come clean me for free in order to reduce any "downtime" in my gameplay.
I hope the KOTOR MMO coming out in '09 will absolutely kill the CRAPtasticness out of SWG so the SWG emulator and KOTOR MMO (since not everyone will like it comparative to SWG obviously) will be kings.
Death to Suits behind games they don't even FREAKING play making decisions!

It was a great game, its such a shame.
Unaware of the Jestor?

I want the end of SWG:NGE and of SOE.
Both are coming. And sooner than than those in Austin think.
lol..the nge maybe..soe ... no
SOE is a rotten tree waiting for that windstorm that topples it.
Interest is simply wanning.
The fact SOE needs a poll to determine NGE is crap shows how pathetic they are.
SHOHADAKU
I'll have to disagree with that.

The Theory of Conservative Conservation of Ignorant Stupidity:
Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
lol..the nge maybe..soe ... no
SOE has lost more than half it's customers since the NGE. Across ALL games, including EQ1/2...
I'd have more confidence in an Enron exec than SOE at this point.
Denial is not just 200K lost SWG subs.. It's also 300K lost EQ subs.
