    Processor: Core 2 Duo 2.4 E660 775 Processor - $220
Power: Corsair 620w Power Supply (Can not stress enough how important a solid power supply is to run 8800 Graphics, SLI or not, in fact I'm right at the just enough power before adding second hard drive) - $140
    Hard Drive: WD 320G Hard Drive (7200 RPM) - $90 (x2)
Case: Cooler Master Mystique - $100
    Total: $1,325 + tax/shipping
The main trick is as always, planning enough power for your computer, and being able to be able to scale into higher end games if necessary. While this computer doesn't pack the punch of the 8800 GTX (or upcoming 9000) with 10,000 RPM RAID 0 Hard drives it is effective and stable. Likewise skimping on case fans or thermal paste can lead to disaster.
Main Issues: Mystique case runs a bit hot, even with top end cooler master CPU blower and upgraded fans. 680i chipset is challenging to configure.
Expansion plans: I'm still debating between a second 8800 GTS 320 or upgrading to a GTX. etc. Moving from XP to Vista which will be a struggle/pain, but waiting for more DX10 games to come out, perhaps early November if Hellgate is worth seeing in top graphics.
Advise: read, read, read. Absorb every review for every piece of equipment you want to purchase, find out it's disadvantages and strengths, find out everything you can about SLI if that's a route you want to take, determine specs, price, post specs on a board to see people's reactions, etc. Most importantly stay within your budget. Don't waste all your money on a top end graphic card and short yourself on ram, hard drive or god forbid motherboard.

well the 8800 320m kidna blows.. but other than that this comp is pretty good.. i would get everything on here except a better graphics card and id get the 6700 core2

With only dual core, more than or equal to 2 gigs of ram and a decent video card I think you'll be fine for AOC.

  • blaamblaam Member Posts: 111

Isnt that a bit early  ? AOC wont come out ebfore a few monthes and by then the quad cores will be cheaper, there will probably be some better eithernvidia or intelMB chipset, GFX card will be either new ( 9000) or cheaper ( 8800)...

    I d wait  if i was you ;)

unless you want  to play other games comming sooner such crisis  ofc

  • megafluxmegaflux Member Posts: 70

    its totally NOT too early.

by the time decisions are made, parts are shipped, vista is installed (your a tool if you are building a rig for this game but plan on running it in DX9), and everything is de-bugged (VISTA) it will most likely be about that time.

would it be better to wait till a week before the game comes out to buy things slightly cheaper and have to RMA that asus mobo (asus just aint what they used to be)?

start now and test things like the unreal demo to see the actual performance, if the video card you buy isnt giving up butter on unreal RMA it immediately and buy a more powerful one. keep in mind that DX10 is showing about 30% hit on performance (for very good reason) vs DX9 (57.3fps vs. 51.7 fps in company of heroes). theres also little things like managing the services etc. that take actual tweaking.  the last thing you EVER do is build a gaming rig and then let windows do what IT wants with it.

I haven't read the whole thread, so I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet...

do NOT go with the ASUS motherboard.

They get good reviews, but I suspect that they handpick the cream of the crop to send out to the reviewers.  Everyone I know, and myself, have had nothing but problems with ASUS motherboards, especially with SLi, and x-Fi soundcards.

They've got some serious QA issues at their factory, and there are also a lot of serious design flaws in some of their models that really show the inconsistencies with the company.

Find some alternative to that motherboard.  I'm going to be building a PC in the next month or so, and I am definitely not making the mistake of buying another ASUS motherboard again.

Overpriced pieces of low-quality; sweatshop grade trash.

EDIT:Also, I'm not saying that they do not produce any worthwhile motherboards, but it's a crap shoot with them, provided you're buying a model that doesn't have a documented design flaw (i.e. the south bridges on some models).

  • megafluxmegaflux Member Posts: 70

    haha, was not expecting that!

it's true tho, you'll meet more actual people who have issues with asus boards than praise for them. like 5 years ago they had a decent rep. once they started doing other things like dvd drives and cases they kinda just crumbled. in sure the e-tards that don't know anything except the 250$ board is better than the 90$ board would say asus is top notch. as for the people that deal with components regularly asus is just a name on your anus (me so clever).

ram is another thing people tend to play the name game with, my 4 gigs for 200$ beats the crap out of their 250$ gig stick (as long as the speed is the same), timings don't mean jack except to the most die hard tweakers (who probably need therapy).

Buy the parts from Newegg then have someone from Geeksquad or any other pc place come out and install it for you if you dont know how.  You'll save close to  $1,000

thats what I did with my new PC...

    intel core 2 duo 3.0 gigz , 4gig ram , Radeon HD 2900 Pro

I just checked and i can get the same system with them as i can with ibuypower.com for about 200 dollars less.
And for those who build computers tell me if this is a good buy please (i.e. building it yourself), i can get it for 1225 shipped through Allpczone:
    MB: Asus P5B LGA775/Core2 Duo/P965/SATA2/A&Gbe/ATX
Proc: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
    Ram: 4GB DDR2 667MHZ PC-5400
    HD: 320 GB SATA2 7200RPM
    Video: NVidea 8800 320MB
With Vista Home Premium, as well as the other normal stuff like DVD/CD-rom, keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.

Don not, I repeat Do not destroy what could be a great computer with that 320 mb POS card. Get a 512 or 768 8800 gtx, nvidia is halting support for the 320 cards due to their lack of memory.

Also newegg is good but you can get better deals from www.tigerdirect.com , i bought a similar comp, all parts were in perfect condition 1500 total.

I went with the EVGA 680i T1 version mobo, the same q6600, 4 gb of 800mzh ram, 2 250 gigs drives 1 for vista 32 and 1 for xp (free copy of vista is why i dont have 64) and the evga 8800 gtx 768mb version, i picked up the vid card and the processor as a combo deal for 600 ish bucks which was supergreat at the time cause the q6600 hadnt dropped yet to 259 it was still 499.

There is no 8800 gtx 512mb card.

There is an 8800 320 and 640mb version of the GTS card.

IN many games the 8800 320mb GTS card performs better than the 8800 640Mb GTS card up to resolutions of 1900x1200. This has been proved lots of times, the 320Mb 8800 GTS is a great card for the price, the extra memory on the 640mb only really comes into effect at higher resolutions like your average 24" monitor and above.

www.tomshardware.com and look at the VGA charts.

AoC has happily been shown at some conventions running with 2gb and E6600 and a Nvidia 7900 GS 256Mb GPU.

There is a new 512 version made by a few makers.  It is a Economy version of the GTS

Personal advice do not build a computer for one game that is not released you will be disappointed especially if you build it now. Since the game is slated for a March release you have plenty of time to wait and check out the new hardware which will be released from now to then.  My advice is wait until the game is released and check out the feed back people give especially those on high end rigs i.e. quad core setups sli/crossfire with 2gb/4gb+ ram running vista (for dx10) and windows xp (for dx9). That way you get a good idea of what you need to get hardware wise inorder for the game to run as you want it to. The last thing you want is to spend thousands of pounds now  only to find out that inorder for the game to run as you want it to you should have waited and bough the GFX card released by company X in say April.

    Water cooled Intel Corei7 920 D0 Stepping OC'd 4.3GHz - 6GB Corsair Dominator GT RAM 2000Mhz - ASUS RAGE II EXTREME X58 Mobo - 2x HD 5870 in Crossfire X, OC'd 0.9Ghz core 1.3Ghz RAM - Dell 2407WFP Flat Panel LCD 24" 1920x1200

The video card (7950) you listed in that thread won't help you with DX10.

You may want something more like the 8800:

Age of Conan is a Windows Vista launch title. This means that we are cooperating with Microsoft in the development of Age of Conan to make sure it takes advantage of Windows Vista, the upcoming new operating system from Microsoft. As the first online game Age of Conan will also feature DX10 support, which allows us to bring an even more detailed gameworld to the players. The game can also be played on DX9.

I've seriously considered getting a Mac Pro now that they can run Windows, but it's just way to much machine and money for me.  So, I'm thinking of building a new PC as well.  I always go through Newegg.  They are always one of the cheapest, and their customer service is very good.

Also, I could be wrong, but lately I've noticed it isn't that much cheaper to build your own system.  Don't forget the the price tag for Dell, etc, usually includes a monitor and your OS.  Once you figure in those costs, the price becomes a little more comparable.

(edit) And, dare I say it, I also thought about droping 450 on an X-box 360--cheaper than building a new computer, and will run Age of Conan.  I just don't know if I'm ready to turn to the dark side yet.

    Two questions.

First why DX10, when DX9 is not that inferior and way way way cheaper.  A system that runs DX9 smoothly is around 60% as costly as the DX10 counterpart.

Second, I heard that there are add-ons to run DX10 on an XP.  I have yet to read about it, but till the smoke clears, I am not sure I need Vista only b/c I want DX10.

Gameplay >> gimmics.  For me at least.

Depends on what type of motherboard you have and what rating your power supply is at :)

  • mezlabormezlabor Member Posts: 133

The only game that system cant run on full settings is crysis because nothing can now. It will run AoC fine

As an fyi guys The devs have said anything that can run oblivion well will run AoC well.

And yea Asus motherboards suck. Great features on paper but they have tons of doa issues and many of them are buggy even when they do boot. Id steer clear of them. I use gigabyte or evga

Nope, not at all. If you choice a Q6600 I would  pick DDR2 PC8500 1066Mhz RAM. Then the CPU´s FSB and RAM Clock will run 1:1 - 100% sync which is perfect for performance.

Personal I would go for Penryn, but  if you  have to buy right now, I would get something like this:

    ASUS P5K Deluxe motherboard

    Q6600 CPU - 2.4Ghz

    PC8500 ram - 4GB

    8800GT GFX card 756MB

    Corsair VX Power-supply

    WD Caviar Sata II HDD
