That's a great question. That was always a suggestion from players with the original JG. Essentially, in JG your avatar was your ship, but there was no way to customize the ship looks. You could change out weapons, missiles, shields, engines, etc. but it didn't change how your ship looks.
Let's hope that they build in a system for customizing your ship so that when flying around you'd be able to recognize someone or know they accomplished some pretty cool things.

I hope so, but I suspect they will not be in first release. Avatars and moving around stations and cap ships etc, will probably not be in JGE until first or second expansion. I don't think the Devs have confirmed one way or the other, but I think Avatars are logical expansion content.

Don't count on avatars anytime soon. JG never had them and was fine without them. JG is about space combat tbh.... was always a decent game just suffered from super dated graphics and a community that was just too small to make the game shine.
Hopefully JGE's improved graphics will bring enough players to really bring the game to life.

I hope it has Avatars, or at least some form of customizing the ship and make it look and feel more personalized.
I just started looking into this game, I heard about it awhile back but I dont like looking into games before there is even any decent info out about them. Have to say its looking good so far and I didnt really get into the first JG but then I only played it at a friends house way back when.

Hermann Peterscheck: Currently in Jumpgate Evolution, you will choose your nation and name your pilot. We don't have avatars in the sense of a 3D character running around a station interior. My feeling is that a danger in game development is trying to do too much all at the same time. We want to focus on making the space flight and space experience the best we can, and we don't want to get too distracted by all kinds of other things that the game could do.
Once you have your ship, a big part of the game will be upgrading it with all kinds of different components... as well as buying new vessels, of course. One of the things we are working on is trying to make the ships feel distinct.

Does it use customizable portraits like EVE, or anything at all to indicate that the player is the pilot, not the ship itself?
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I could have sworn that the original press release about the rebuild included something about ground-based avatars ... but now that I take a closer look, I can't find it.
What a bummer. Twitch will be a nice departure from EVE, but the glacial pace of MMO evolution is fucking killing me.
I get that NetDevil doesn't have the staff or the know-how to make a ground-based game be any good whatsoever, but would it kill one of these larger publishers to take a break from the IP game and create something holistic and meaty for the sci-fi genre?

If you add avatars, players will want to fight with them, and thats not what this game is about. Refer to PotBSs forum and see what folks like the lest about that game.

I am (was) a player, how come I don't want to fight with them? And In Earth and Beyond you have an avatar, no avatar combat.Perhaps a hasty generalisation?
I wouldn't mind having an avatar walking around. But there are heaps, HEAPS of features I'd like to see but doubt they will be included. And like they said in the article, first the spaceflight, then comes the rest.
I dunno I liked the idea of at least some non-combat customization to make my shit feel more like mine rather than something generic that everyone of my class has even if it is only a decal on the side of my ship I want something to mark it as "mine"
In the original version of Jumpgate it was always simple to tell a player pilot from an AI vessel. THey are generally of different ship types and when they appear on your radar it displays their name when they are targeted. I never had a hard time knowing which pilot handed me my walking papers, I don't assume it would become a problem in then ew game.
Well i posted question about avatars on the JGE official forums. And the posters there nearly gutted me.
When i told them that non-hardcore playerbase actually wishes to see avatars, and that EVE suffers from the same problem.
And it doesnt have to be walking in stations even.
But customisable 3D avatar , that is also animated not only a still like in EVE
..
Anyway, seems that JGE fanbase (at least now) is still held by hardcore pvp crowd. That only care about PEW-PEW... and they heavily flamed my request

First of all.. Being unrespectful to veterans in any game will get u flamed.. No matter how good your suggestions are.. And calling us pew pew crowd will not make you many friends.
Secondly.. you posted your suggestions.. (noone gets to request anything) as everyone else.. People expressed their views on your suggestion, and you totally overreacted..
You then made one more thread with basically the same suggestion..
Your main point was THIS GAME IS GONNA FAIL WITH NO AVATARS!!! in Caps.

I kinda fell over the pew pew remark.
I feel myself part of the PvP crowd, because of the danger it adds to a game.
But to be PvP, is to be 'pew pew' you say.

Thats not 100% true.. Most of older players do want change. Most of them dont play the old JG anymore, some still do. And most of them dont want JGE to be the same game as JGC.
You refer to autopilot thread.. JGC is a twitch based game. Autopilot is just not something most old player want or think is needed at all. You can argue with all kinds of reasons for having an autopilot.. But if you havent played JGC you wont get why it really is something that was never needed.
Yes some can seem like religious zelouts.. lol.. But remember, there are people who have and are playing the original game for since Beta or release 2001-- Thats 7 years or more,. And you have to understand that it becomes religious at that point.
Now.. the JGC community is very Noob friendly, this arent the players that gank you for no reason. You surely havent played this game in a long time if you think that. So stop spreading lies.

Don't worry about the veteran players. I think you'll find that JE will incorporate enough changes to make the game more casual friendly and encouraging to today's player base that they'll be pissed off for years and maybe not even play.
And if you've been playing the same game for 7 years, you need to take a break. There's so much more that you've missed out there.

Complaining about JE vets? I don't think I did that. I just said in the scheme of things, their opinions will actually have less to do with JE's new incarnation than they believe, and it will piss them off when they realize it.
But I don't bother visiting other forums, MMORPG.com is pretty much my only home.
