When do you think WoW will begin to lose subscribers?

When do you think that WoW will being to noticeably lose its population?  It's inevitable that it must happen some time, whether it be in 1 year or 10 years.  Then again, by the time it dies out Blizzard will probably have a new MMO out...

I'm predicting that it will start to decline around the time WotLK comes out.  Of course the hardcore WoWers will still stay, but I think the casuals will get fed up with having to pay yet another $50 to keep up with the population, not to mention newcomers may be turned off by the fact that the level cap is 80, whereas back a couple years you only had to go up to 60.

Not flaming you but i seriously don't understand the fascination with blizzard losing subs...anyways i think they will lose some, i think a lot of the new games coming out don't really cater to casual gamers like blizzard does, and most who play wow only like to pvp on the side, not really hardcore pvpers imo.

blizzard had an advantage of a huge gaming  fan base compared to other companies, especially in other countries with starcraft.  I have read lots of posts where they discuss if players would leave for another mmo what would it be and there are people who say they won't play any other mmo, WOW will be their first and last mmo, unless blizzard releases another =D

Anyways, i believe a lot of pvpers will go check out war and aoc and i think some will come back, WOW isn't gonna go away no matter how much people diss on it, when blizzard pulls the plug on the game is when it will die, no other games will kill it, or ever match the paid numbers is got, hell i don't even think blizzard could pull them kinda numbers again.

yes i play wow, no i'm not a fanboy, nor do i care if you wanna label me that, i have ranted and ripped blizzards behind for doing a lot of stupid crap, I have been a blizzard fan forever but i won't just let them do whatever they want without giving them a piece of my mind :)  (like they care what i think anyways lol)

Well it just wouldn't be a normal week on these boards without someone predicting the decline of the game and why now would it?

There has been a marked drop off in subscriptions over the last few months, but that is still coming down from the surge of the last expansion where a lot of older players returned too. If the last expansion is anything to go by there will be another surge in subscriptions and if they come through with the new PvP elements, may even keep some of the people that are on the fence in regard to some of the new MMO's coming soon.

There will of course be a number that will leave for AoC and WAR, but some of those will come back after a month or two if these MMO's haven't got it right first time.

It must be Thursday, i never could get the hang of Thursdays.

They already started to lose lots of accounts in the western world some time ago. After 3 years advertising in TV in germany for the first time, maybe because of the ghost server here? But since the game is doing fine in asia, blizz can keep telling the world, they've millions of subscribers

  • PheacePheace Member Posts: 2,408

If anything WOTLK is gonna make them pick up subscriptions again.

It's more likely they're losing subs now but many of them will be back to check out the expansion at least.

Yep..blizz is already losing players...in total numbers you cant see it because of China..but in US and EU players are tired of wow...its just the same game for so long with more farming for new gear when blizz decides current gear is obsolete..

Lots of players left already, and some are just waiting for warhammer and aoc...

Just check the servers..the full servers didnt increase....the low pop servers are even lower..and are increasing in numbers..., blizz never had to make comercials and now they hire Mr T and Van Damme to make comercials...

Its not the end of wow..but loads of people will leave it..thats a fact.. wow just lost its magic..now its just a farming frenzy..where everyone and theyr alts are full epic geared players...

After TBC its not about the game anymore..its about making the best amount of money untill wow is dead...

ROFL! I love quotes like that.

Yes loads of people will leave WoW, but the trick to any game is to compensate for those players leaving with new players coming in and looking at various quoted stats across the net for the last few months they have managed to do that. Although the game has been losing players it is still around the levels it was pre-BC. So if you look at it that way, it hasn't realy lost players, it has maintained it's base allowing for a spike on expansion release.

Yes some of the servers have smaller populations, but since they opened more for BC and the levels have now more or less gone back to pre-BC levels there is going to be more space around, but it makes no sense to merge or close servers with another expansion on the way which will lead to a population boost again.

Will WoW eventually drop in popularity, yes of course it will as that is the order of things, but as for the masses flocking to AoC and WAR, well that is to be seen isn't it.

    i don't care.

The more subscribers in wow, the less kids in other mmos, and it's a good thing.

Why do we have these threads? Aren't we "jumping the gun"a bit??

WoW is still a pretty "new" MMO.

I have an idea, let's wait a few more years before we start predicting the decline of WoW.

    I wish I was a mod here.

The numbers are still strong, Most of my original servers are still FULL, and what I like most is that even today when i've been on the game for more then 2 years can start new character and still group and tag along with many low level toons..  This was a common problem with many older games was newbie zones being empty of any players..  WoW is yet to have that problem in my opinion..

So as long as the servers are busy and newbie zones are busy. ALL is good..  Keep up the good work Blizzard..

To answer the OP's question I predict in about 2059 partially due to green house warming flooding most coastal areas, or after Blizzard puts out their 5th or 6th MMORPG

  • BadSpockBadSpock Member UncommonPosts: 7,979

    They will never stop...

Their subscriber based will continue to build until every man, woman, and child on the Earth plays WoW.

Then, they'll have to find new subscribers, so they'll begin cloning members of high level raid guilds and Arena PvP champions.

Then, when that phase is complete, they'll beam a data feed w/ WoW through lasers into space.

Alien species will then intercept the feed and begin playing.

    And they'll all roll Horde.

One day, when the sun burns out and our solar system is incinerated, WoW may begin to lose subscribers... but by then, we'll have a microchip in our brains that feeds us WoW, so we'll never be logged off and always, always, always be looking for group...

And yes, this response just as likely as any "predictions" any of ya'll will make.

Point is, why worry? Why even bother?

I can agree with that but with WOW and some other games now it lost it sense of community. Who cares if a server is full when most not all of the groups you join are impatient little kids that get what they came for and leave , i really hate that. I ve never played a more populated game that feels so empty, hell i get more long term, helpful groups in FFXI when i played that. Sure some will say it s such a pain getting a group in that game that once you have one you really need to stay for the long haul, but most in that game will stay till everyone finishes what they came for. Sorry for the rant but that alone is why i can t stand WOW:)

WOW will start to lose some subscribers this year but nothing major. To many big name games coming out that will steal some players.

    After a couple of the above comments i thought i would take a look over the EU server pops as shown by Blizzard (so read into that what you please), but it looked pretty healthy overall;

English - All Medium - Full, not one low pop
    German - Only 2 x RPPvP & 2 x PvP servers showing low, all others Medium+
French - Only RP & PvP showing low
    Spanish - Mediums

Bear in mind that this is at 3:45pm UK, 4:45pm Euro time, so you would expect quite low populations anyway, yet there are still quite a few full.

Not to mention WoW and TBC both are mostly still in the top 5 monthly sales.

I think the answer to this question is still up in the air, but ultimately depends on the following:

    1) The quality of WOTLK.

    2) Whether any of these upcoming MMOs such as WAR and AoC live up to their hype or dwindle in obscurity like everything else has recently.

    3) When Starcraft 2 comes out.  Sure, it's not an MMO, but it will have a massive, massive online presence, mark my words - and it's 'true' PvP - which is what a lot of people are after, so to speak.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

First Off, WoW will have penty of subscribers for many years to come. At this time Players are burning out of WoW, they are looking for a new game to explore. However there just isnt a game currently released that is the calibre of WoW. As such, players eventually return after a month or so.

As for when, I dont care.  The success of WoW has no direct impact on my ability to enjoy other MMORPGs.

to be honest om suprised alot of ppl still play, i played for about 3 years quit numerous times but like the one guy said, we quit and search for a new game but there isnt a game that compares to WOW.

the main downfall to WoW is that everything u do is a grind, majority of the time u dont even have to PvP to get gear u can just go AFK at the entrance to a battle ground and when it gets near the end just run in and kill a few ppl so u get all the bonus honor.

even though this game bores me to the point where i just stand in town and BS with my friends in Vent i will probally end up going back cause there is no other game to play.

  • greymanngreymann Member Posts: 757

I got tired of wow after I realized I couldn't make grand marshall at 60 without doing it full time and quit.  Then I entered the gaming wilderness, searching for another great game which is not to be found.  Then they allowed me to get GM gear with honor points and I signed back up.  Then the expansion came out.  Then I quit after  I got all the honor gear I could at 70 and my arena team broke up--again entering the wilderness, searching for just one decent game.  Then I signup up again to wow when season 3 came out.

I've quit wow at least 3 times thinking I'd never go back and now I'm enjoying it more than ever.  They are great at getting people back.  A lot of us have friends that never quit and are always trying to us back in.  Mainly, the gaming industry doesn't give people who enjoy mmo's much of a reason to quit wow.

What is the trend with active subscriptions?  As far as I know the only thing that can hurt wow is another game by blizzard.  I hear people say they are going to quit at the next expansion and laugh.  They play 15 plus hours a week now.  What will they do when they quit and all their friends are still playing?

I gather from the majority of the posts that there are alot of people who play WoW simply because there are no other good MMOs to go to; the free ones have microtransactions and botters everywhere, and the P2P ones are usually too heavy on the grind, and alot of them still have bot infestations.  So, do you think that will change with the release of games like WAR, AoC, Aion etc?

I'll make this clear: I didn't make this topic out of WoW-hate.  I think it's a great MMO even though I don't play it.  However, being that it is the most successful MMO by a longshot in the past many years, i'm simply curious to see when the juggernaut will begin to weaken.

Also, I'm not asking when WoW will "die".  As evident from games like FFXI and Lineage 2, 500k subscribers is still more than enough to bring in cash.  I want to know when there will be a clearly visible decline in subscribers, not when the game will no longer be able to support itself.

    Honestly, who cares?

When it happens I'm sure all media will report it, until then play what you want and enjoy it.

I'm wondering if we will even be able to tell when it happens?  There are many who already believe that Blizzard is inflating their numbers.  You think if they report another increase those people will believe them?  And if they report a small decrease, then what?  Will people believe the game is in decline or people just say that it's in a little bit of a slump and the expansion will push the numbers to new heights?  Won't there be those that will claim the game is finished then even though it may take another year or so before we see any real drop off?  And what if Blizzard just quits announcing subscription numbers altogether?  Some will state that's because the numbers have fallen drastically and Blizzard just doesn't want you to know.  And if the expansion doesn't send the number of subscribers past 10 million does that mean it's a flop or does it just mean that without it the numbers would have plummeted?

We'll all just have to wait and see.  Personally, I think WoW has changed the landscape of the MMO genre.  A lot of folks who's hero used to be FPS Doug or RTS Jeremy have switched over to MMO Anastasia.  But how long will it last?  Did WoW just catch lightning in a bottle and we may never again see an MMO get close to WoW's sub numbers and WoW is still the leader 5 years down the road or will something else come along to claim the top spot and see WoW drift off into the sunset.  It's really hard to see the future.

Its tough to tell really, I see some leaving for War or AOC but at the same time some of those may play both games and if the past is anything like the future you will have people leave to play a new one and decide it wasnt for them and go back to WoW.

WoW's biggest advantage is it is a lot easier for a casual gamer to enjoy compared to some games out there. I have many in my guild who love it just because of the fact they can still enjoy the game without having to play hours upon hours a day, unless your one of the ones that just has to have all the elite stuff then of course its a grind.

Its funny but all of us immature kids who play WoW do enjoy it because we have families and job's and yet we can still have a good time in a game without needing to live at the computer.
