Great one Torak hehe. Actually I suspect since its usually more like 39 bucks in most stores, you just found a great deal The games busy as hell on my server. Well in anycase funny but belated troll post
o i played it for about a month last year when i hit 50 saw it going nowhere fast so i sold my account for 90 bucks.love the books and loved the way they said this game was gonna be a few years ago...the final product was much different.

not a troll post just think it is odd that they say the game is doing so well.and here after less then a year release its 10 bucks on one of the biggest pc game retail chains...if i were trolling i would have opened with "zomg!!! dont buy this awful awful game suckzor!!!!(insert more leet talk here)
I finally canceled my account today. I have been playing since beta, and it was a tough decision to cancel my founder's account... knowing if i decide to go back later it will cost me more per month. All my friends and Kinmates have already drifted away and I haven't found any reasons to want to log in since a couple of days after they put housing in the game. It's a solid and polished game, it just lacks the depth of content to keep people playing for the long amounts of time they play other MMOs.

Ok then, yeah gamespot does have it for 9.99, I picked up my own account last month and started playing again with my wife. Everywhere else its like 39.99 plus, depending. Figure in the 9.99 a month they got going and really, how can you pass it up?
Anyway, give it a try, they even have a free trial....must be pretty bad
A drop in box price doesn't mean the game isn't doing well.
You can pick up WoW for 20 or less now, and that game is obviously doing great and still growing.
They (Turbine) make most of their money for LOTRO on the subscriptions (so I would assume)
They really have come up with some interesting payment options. Life time subscription, box price drops, etc.
I'd say it's just a marketing move. Will it help sell boxes? Of course. But they know that unless people are paying the subscription, the game will fail.
So it doesn't really matter what they charge for the box, it's how many subscriptions they get.
I actually wish more MMORPGs took this approach. Cheaper box price, comparable monthly fees.
They make more money off the subscriptions at this point, they've got their base number of subscribers happy and paying monthly for additional content (chapters). Besides when games first launch (particularly MMOS who won't make any additional money after the box price until the 30 free days are up) the bulk of the money they need to recover costs of development are made in the first two months after that just about all PC games dwindle in price.
In a way dropping the Disk price to 10 dollars is attractive to players with little money wanting to get into MMO gaming.
Turbine always' had a completely different view on how to do things in the MMO industry with pricing models.

I think most MMOS would be happy if they kept their subscribers for 9 months on average.

I also canceled , after wopping 6 months ! I never managed to play a MMO longer than 4 months before going to look for another one (or returning to single player games) not even the famed WOW
Than I spend 2 months looking for another MMO. Tried WOW again, tried TR, tried free MMOs, tried EQ2, tried COX
And now i resubed to LOTRO wondering why i left in first place ?
OH wait I REMEMBER !
I thought AOC is about to launch !
But since it isnt ... i guess i have 4 more months to play LOTRO

There was an article in PCGamer I believe in 2006 maybe early 2007, that stated at the time, the "average" MMORPG subscription lasted 6 months or less.

There was an article in PCGamer I believe in 2006 maybe early 2007, that stated at the time, the "average" MMORPG subscription lasted 6 months or less.
That may have changed since.
Maybe...maybe not...lets see...
Guild Wars...I played for over a year...
WoW...played for over a year
EQ2...going on my 6th month, only at level 39, and just got my wife to join, and she is having a blast...and I still play everyday, and loving it..
Guild Wars from opening (Was that May 2005?) to present - 2 years 8 months
Everquest 2: 3 months
Origial Everquest: 4 hours then Never. Again.
DDO: 1 month, then back later for 2 months, then back again for 1 month....we'll see if I stick this time.
LOTRO: just bought it at big discount. We'll see how long that lasts.
Tabular Rasa: 2 months so far. I expect this will last another 2-3 months then I'll be done with it. But it will be a good, satisfied done, not a, "Sick of this," done with it.
Lineage: 5 hours tops.
Eve Online: Never made it through the tutorial. Just watching my wife play put me to sleep.
Archlord: About a week.
City of Heroes: 1 month
Final Fantasy XI: about a week, then I couldn't take it anymore.
Horizons: About 2 hours and then I couldn't take it anymore.
Shaiya: About 45 minutes and then I couldn't take it anymore. (record stuck....)
Pirates of the Burning Sea Beta: About 4 hours and then I...you get the idea.
The Matrix Online: 1 month. Wish it had been better.
Star Wars Galaxies: The original was 1 month, would have been longer if it hadn't run like hell on my old PC. The NGE lasted 2 weeks....played the free trial, found it wanting.
So I'd say any MMO that keeps someone for 6 months is doing pretty good.
But the best MMOs will, naturally, keep you for a lot longer....but those are destined to be few and far between!
Any MMO that holds my attention for more than a month or two is exceptional. I have played a few for more than 6 months, but I can list them on one hand: DAoC (around a year), WoW (year and a half), LoTRO (since open beta...7 months so far?).
AO: three weeks
EQ: three months was my longest stint
EQ II: 6 weeks
CoH: 6 weeks longest stint
SWG: a week
I could go on (played quite a few for an afternoon or two just to get a taste), but I personally have never gotten the argument that a game that fails to keep you enthralled for 2+ years sucks. Life is too short.
Hell, I only played CoH for a month the first time, and I felt I got my monies worth. It was a fun month after all. I sure as hell didn't spend the next year of my life camping the CoH boards and whining about it. Such behavior strikes me as slightly insane.
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
Guild Wars...I played for over a year... WoW...played for over a year EQ2...going on my 6th month, only at level 39, and just got my wife to join, and she is having a blast...and I still play everyday, and loving it..
...... LOTRO....4 months... Weird..
Averages are just that, an average of the data available, so, your play length for Guild Wars, WoW, and EQ2 is on the long end of the 6 months, and LOTRO was on the short end. That could be (and is from what people have said on these boars) the reverse from other folks. So, I don't think it's "weird" that you didn't play LOTRO for more than 4 months, and the rest longer. There's always a game (or more) that a person doesn't like and doesn't get into. For you, that was LOTRO.

BTW As i say. I resubscribed And damn I am glad I did. I enjoy this game. And the atmosphere is unbeatable. I also noticed that servers are now more packed more than they ever been. Even more than at release !!!! LOTRO is actually growing in subscriptions.
Growing? Prove it. Anecdotal evidence is not sufficient.
And it seems Jackdog is now playing EQ2. Kinda funny seeing as how he was a huge SOE hater on these forums, and talked about LOTRO like it was the second coming of christ.
