Its 10 days to launch, not 5. Are you also aware theres a patch on the test server that fixes quite a few issues? However im not sure what "massive flaws" you are talking about, as I easily leveled my first toon to 21 no problem and am working on my second.
Sigh......yet another misleading look at me post I see. I've been playing since the start of open beta and have yet to find a "MASSIVE FLAW" as you so eloquently put it.
One of the things I like most about PotBS is how the young'uns seem to stear clear of it. Everyone I have chatted with seems to maintain a level of maturity that supercedes that of most other games I have played.
Once or twice have I seen someone looking for attention in open chat. It is always game oriented or nations just having fun.
Sorry if I got a little off topic there. As the above poster said 10 days.
go back through smitty's posts...he obviously is not a fan of the game and yet continues to post and bash it at every turn.
Me thinks someone still has a soe grudge
Well, in all fairness, pre-release is the time that beta testers SHOULD be pointing out flaws in the game that haven't been corrected. If people are looking for information on whether to buy or not, that's as valuable as the glowing reviews.
go back through smitty's posts...he obviously is not a fan of the game and yet continues to post and bash it at every turn.

Maybe he does... maybe he doesn't.
In any case, my opinion of the initial post was that it was a troll.
Sorry smitty, but you could have put that post on the end of any number of existing threads. No need for a new thread IMHO. Then again, I am not a Mod here so whatthehellwouldIknowanyway?
As for SOE... smitty DID NOT MENTION SOE. He was addressing THE GAME. That is 100% FLS.
Sorry miagisan, but if this thread degenerates into a "SOE is teh evol" thead then YOU started it, not smitty.
And further to that, why is it that whenever anyone says anything negative about this game now half the forum jump on them with the "You SOE hateboy! SWG is teh over! EQ1 roxxors! it was all Sigil's fault!"?
The fact is that we are addressing issues with THIS game. And yes, some of the issues surrounding THIS game are due to the actions of SOE.
Gameplay however is 100% FLS - and I believe that is what smitty was talking about?

Oh there is no problem what so ever about posting gameplay issues with this game. I myself did the very same thing when the NDA got lifted. However its one thing to point out what is wrong, its another thing to say the game has "massive flaws" and make no mention of what those flaws are. The OP did not post to start a discussion on the issues he is having (since he listed none). He posted to troll.
Thought I would just update anyone waiting for the massive flaws to disappear. (like me) Thus far, nada.
Please go back to your troll cave or bridge, or where ever trolls hang these days. I have been playing since open beta and i did not see any massive flaws...as a matter a fact...i hardly saw any flaws in game play.
Please go away and leave us alone with the game we like.

1. These aren't the main forums for the game...this is a completely separate website
2. If you like the game, cool...but get used to serious criticism...it's an MMO.
3. If you didn't see any flaws in the game play, you're either blind or just don't care about a lot of aspects of it. ANYONE who can say the avatar combat isn't a flaw is just lying to themselves and others.

You know, you sound like a 10 year old child with this comment. You sound as if the bad people are coming to hurt your game, its almost funny to see on the way you are acting. Nobody is going to hurt you, or your little dog to... err i mean game.
I beta tested the game, i did however like the game but the avatar combat is just horrible. One of the many things i hated about the avatar combat was the fact that you missed 80-90% of your swings, and the npc's either missed more then 75% of the time, or hit you 100% of the time. The Avatar combat sucks, plain and simple. The ship combat is fun, but could use a little bit of more features to it. The quest are all the same, the game is easy to lvl up to lvl 20.
Again, i am not the boogeyman and im not hear to hurt your little game, i liked it but its a pretty plain game atm.
Ok, lets put things on the paper to try to sttle this.
enjoying a game is a personal thing... However there is a few common points to everyone...
From MY point of view, I will list the good and bad things of the game:
- Zoned, instances its anti-climax, destroy any MMO (for me, MMO is more the feel of a world to play full of people to interact, anything different can be considered a offline game). The modern games avoid loadings and instances, its something old. This game is based upon something considered really bad nowdays.
- All missions are alike. I know, mostly MMOs are like this, but this game went too far... Specially on avatar missions. Its boring for me, however koreans guys like grinding (repetitions). I dont.
- Avatar fights are just horrible. Plain simple. And its responsible for 35% of the game, at least. So, 35% of the game is technically worst than anything I can think of (I was thinking in something bad on MMOs to put on compairson and I couldnt find, not even Ragnarok online).
- Tottally unrealistic, and this a great sin to a game based on REALITY. A friend of mine was criticizing the ´teletransport´ of the hunter on LOTRO, he plays now Potbs and have his own ship and crew teletransported to the sea (almost the same) with all his crew and the enemies, just after speaking with the guy on port. There is tons of others unrealistic things, but lets go to the other part.
- Too arcade for me, you even have a char who sets the difficult of the missions for you. Wanted a more realistic, less arcade game.
Good things about the game:
- Good crafting (Althought unrealistic, I miss SWG so much)
Well, thankfully FLS is not catering to everyone here. My first mmorpg was M59 and I have played every mainstream mmorpg to date since then, minus WWIIO. I'm a die hard gamer. I love mmorpgs.
I've been playing PotBS for a couple of months now and I am having a blast. I feel the exact opposite of the previous post and certainly have not seen any "massive flaws" either.
But that's the beauty of these forums, eh? If we all agreed it'd be a very boring place indeed!
FLS designed this to be a niche game. They never expected to appeal to the masses. To some of us, even some of us die hard mmorpg'ers, it's a totally kick ass game that deserves a major kudos!
Some of us wanted an incredible fun game that "thinks outside of the box". Lucky for us, FLS delivered that game. For everyone else, there's a ton of games out and even more coming out... it's all good, we all have a big list to pick from, there's something for pretty much everyone now.
Gyrus was right, I didn't have the time this morning to explain what I was saying to the extent that would make it sound not so trollish. Domenicus hit the nail right on the head with the flaws I was referring to. I figured that anyone that has played any other big-name mmo, would realize many of these flaws, and some were mentioned by fls themselves in their public address.
All I was saying is that all of the development will be completed with the final patch in 5 days, and SO FAR, none of these issues have seen the attention that it needs for a big launch. Sorry for sounding troll-ish, because that is generally not my style. Sometimes I'm hard on mmo's but I'm generally hard on them because I want people to expect more... because when you demand more, you generally get more.
ps. I just feel like I'm on crazy pills when people say avatar combat is NOT a major flaw with the game!! Has anyone done dirty fighting? The aoe bomb is soooo overpowered, I can stun the whole opposing ship, and your hits DON"T miss ever!! I can kill the captain 2 times before the crew wakes up... it's rediculously implemented, balanced, repetitive, the skills are lame (aside from the gun) and the graphics and settings are very cheesy.

First, no mmorpg is ever complete. WoW could be considered the most complete mmorpg launch ever in my opinion with a HUGE staff and funding, and yet it still took the devs in some cases YEARS to fix core game bugs that they either didnt have time to fix or didnt know how to fix (like arcane missiles shooting 4 instead of 5 times).
PotBS has bugs today, it will have bugs tomorrow, and a year from now it will still have bugs. Id bet any money on it. We take what we are given now and deal with it. 5 months ago I leveled to 50, did tons of pvp, did tons of port battles. If I could do all that then, I can do all that on the 22nd.
You fail to mention LoTRO as being finished and well polished upon release.
The days of old are gone, gamers expect a finished product to hit the shelves not some excuse for an open Beta to be paid for. I tested the game early on and was very very disappointed and looked forward to it so much too. It has been awhile since I tested but I can say with certainty that I had more fun with Voyage Century than I ever did with PoTBS. For one, the controls were so awkward and as many said the Avatar combat made me totally dislike the game right away.
I wish they had concentrated on just the Ship combat aspect of it, as soon as they decided to go with Avatar combat the game took a nosedive and alot of the polish that was focused on ships and that aspect was moved to Avatars. The final result is that the game just doesn't have the same appeal as it once did and it shows in reviews and the popularity polls here and elsewhere. Very disappointing.

That, is what I fight for too. We are still the minority it seems - but we are gradually winning people over!

I actually liked the Avatar combat!
(To be fair though I did only really try the fencing style and only PvE so that probably made a difference? And I thought the Avatar Combat in boarding actions was a bit jumpy...)
I think the issue with the Avatar combat is the way people view it.
Gyrus'es Guide to Avatar Combat in PotBS
People don't like it because they feel that the Avatar is not reacting to their keystrokes?
Newsflash - it's NOT - it is an Indirect / Advisory Control System.
WTF is that then?
Ever play Evil Genius by Elixir? Dungeon Keeper by Bullfrog?
You had no direct control over your minions - you "advised" them and they acted accordingly when the conditions were right.
View Avatar Combat in PotBS in the same way - also view it as "turn based".
Now it's NOT turn based - it's time based - but the analogy helps to understand. Skills take TIME to recharge, some longer than others, and can be 'qued' up to work when the conditions are right...
Your Avatar had a number of skills that are "passive" and are on all the time - look in the skills.
If you give your Avatar a passive PARRY skill to improve his/her parry chance think of this as armour.
Get into a swordfight and take your hands OFF the keyboard.
See? You Avatar parrys automatically. The passive skill works without your input.
Note that not all Parry Skills are completely passive either. Some have to be activated (these are BLUE ICONS IIRC?) and give you a defencive bonus for a period of time. At high levels activating some of these skills can be activated and make you darn near unhittable. But - the instant you attack - the activated parry skill is cancelled.
Now, queing skills: Get Offhand Shot (the first skill you should get with any fighting style) and go to an easy land mission. Target a lone enemy and fire and offhand shot... then immediately click on the button to fire again... it will not fire but you see the green icon on the skill? This shows you the skill is in the que. Now touch nothing.
Your Avatar will parry using his passive parry skill until the offhand shot is 'recharged' (hopefully he/she wont die in the mean time!) and then fire automatically when the conditions are right again.
See what I mean?
You are advising your Avatar - not directly controlling it. Your key presses are NOT responded to at once - they are responded to when the conditions for that skill to work are correct.
Button mashing will NOT work as all skills have a 'recharge time' (although for some it is quite short).
Preparatory Attacks (YELLOW ICONS?) are used to make the conditions right for some other attacks to activate - and IIRC there are some skills you can activate and que (Finishing Attacks) that will stay qued until the conditions are right.
So, activate a Finishing Attack... it does not work because the conditions are not right but the green icon is there... and follow up with prepatory attacks... as soon as the conditions are met *BAM!* there goes your finishing attack.
(My memory might be failing but I think that's right)
The Attacks (ORANGE ICONS?) are less powerful but have short recharge times and have very few conditions that need to be met to work - but they do cancel just about anything else you have active or qued. They are also the weakest type of attack. Here's something else too - mix it up a little.
That enemy alway parry your thrust? Try a slash then! Follow that with a cut... then a preparatory attack and a finishing move. I noticed that some AI enemies seem to be programmed to be strong against one type of attack... you change your attack style and cut them to pieces.
Setting up your icon bar is something to experiment with.
I set mine up with 2-3 Basic Attacks, 2-3 Prep Attacks, 2 Finishing Moves, A pistol skill and a Parry Boost for when things got tough.
Also set up a second icon bar for when you fight with AI allies - and have skills that influence allies.
Well, that was my observations anyway. I only played for a week - but once I realised that it was a 'fly by wire' type control system it made far more sense and i understood why my Avatar did NOT always react to my keypresses.

LotRO complete? It may have been smooth bug wise, but certainly not complete content wise. People were bored of the game in like 10 days. First post on the forums there:
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/162816 "-No Gondor -No Rohan -No Mordor! Instead, you can either be a hobbit, an elf in some elf-land you never friggin' heard (Edhelion? wtf) of which happens to be right next door to the Shire (lol), or a Human from the village of Bree (not a city stop calling it that, read the books)."
Yes LotRO was so complete...
Anyhow back to PotBS. You said you tested it "early on"? How early are we talking about? I started testing the game in July and it has improved significantly, especially in the area of avatar combat. Yes Avcom is still the games weakest aspect, but it improves each patch and is not being ignored.
I'll never play this game due to the fact that it involves pirates. There is nothing remotely cool about being a pirate, IMO. I'm surprised people actually thought it would be a good idea to make a "Pirate" MMO. It will be interesting to see the number of subscribers it gets. My guess is this game flops. 100k subs at most, and thats stretching it. No match for the Warhammer juggernaut. My $0.02

I heard this same argument when Vanguard was released early. It was lame then, and it's lame now. If you are enjoying the game, great! But don't try to minimize the bugs by saying that it's okay because every other game has them too. The game is either ready for a smooth release or it's not ready at all. No consumer should accept anything in the middle.

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
LotRO complete? It may have been smooth bug wise, but certainly not complete content wise. People were bored of the game in like 10 days. First post on the forums there:

"-No Gondor
-No Rohan
-No Mordor!
My $0.02
Dont suppose you heard of that pirate trilogy disney made that earned them a zillion dollars?
Of course I've heard of it. Yes I was entertained for an hour and a half. No I do not want to pretend to be a pirate.
