I have light RP'ed in GW. It is usually because of the names my characters have revolve around the Wheel of Time series by the late Robert Jordan.
Characters with similar name sakes come up to me and we will banter back and forth all in good fun. DDO did not have much RP in it from what I saw...mostly people running instances and so on although RPing there would have been fun. Right now on LOTRO on my server there is not really any RP but then again I am not on the unofficial/official RP server so I don't expect to see much.
RPG has morphed into a game form where it is not so much the fact that you are trying to BE that character, but more that you are wanting to RAISE your character. Almost like a baby...parents have a pride for their children like MMO players have a pride for their characters. There are always stories about your first and fond memories of everything new...then they grow up and you give more attention to others. RPG is basically a synonym for a quest driven/ character advancement game.

I never RP actualy, dont like it. But really, if u like to RP than GW is definitely not your game. Not to mention its all instanced what does not help to RP.
Guild Wars is extremely hard to roleplay in from what i've seen. From time to time you see people that try to do it but it just doesn't fit. With the instancing, and lack of character customization to make your character truly unique makes it kind of a dud when it comes to roleplaying.
There is no roleplaying in any kind of form involved. Admit it, Guild Wars players, have you ever seen anyone roleplay or even develop their characters properly?
In the sense that people actively play out a character, yes I see your point. However, there a sense, how I view GW's RP, that can be understood. For me the RP in GW is about putting yourself in the story as it's given. As of now I have saved three continents, killed a god, and defeated a plethora of enemies during my travels.
To OP, your post, imo, sounds vaguely trollish: "Admit it, Guild Wars players." Putting it like that seems to automatically exclude yourself from the community - in which case why do you care?
Role-playing is something a user(s) decide to do. A game can't do it for you. Whether or not you want to immerse yourself in the lore of the game (or some other source) is up to you. There's plenty of lore in guild wars, in fact, more than any other MMO i've played.
Will you people stfu about whether this God damned game is A RP or a MMO, every time I come onto the GW section hardly anything is new apart from some person moaning at the genre of the game. /end rant

No thanks for me. I just had one thing to say and after that I pretty much stopped caring. I'll not mind if people (like I just did) stopped bumping this thread.
I have seen people role play .. but seriously it is creepy.. I mean when someone gets too "into" a game it makes me want to look up the number for the nearest shrink and give it to them. Games are wayy better when people stay real. To me I am the same person whether or not I am sitting there at my laptop or I am at the mall... The whole idea of having a virtual life and a real life is just weird. I mean yes it is creepier when a guy really dresses up in tights and jumps out of a tree and says " hark who dares to cross my path !" ( which actually happened to me behind the ymca once ) but it is creepy no matter where you do it. Nothing irritates me more than people who think they can do whatever they want simply because they are playing a computer game, or that it makes them into someone else. People playing these games often get so into them they forget how to communicate for real. I actually heard a guy say "LOL" outloud on a headset once instead of just laughing. The whole point of these games I would think would be a way to wind down and relax at the end of a day, not get so into them that they forget their real life and live in a virtual world, while they let their real life go to poop.

You choose a character, give it a name, dress them up, walking around town, explore fictional worlds, seems like roleplaying to me. Infact every game ever made is a role playing game. What more do you want?

there are over 1200 skills in all the GW`s together and there are 90 different profession combination and then every profession has its spesialisation, i think you can make pretty unique characters in GW.
Whit most games there are only 3 or 4 professions (warrior, ranger, Magican/elementis) and all of them have about 10/20 skills.

In the looks department, there are a multitude of faces, hair types, hair colors, skin colors, heights, professions, armor, and dyes.
I think everyone will agree that the term "RPG" isn't meant to be taken literally. It's just a generic name for the genre.
The real question is whether or not GW is an MMO. Personally I think it qualifies as an MMO by the skin of its teeth. The difference between GW and games like Diablo or NWN are more technical than noticable in gameplay. You could create a non-MMO version of GW and it would play almost exactly the same.
Myself, I would not call it an RPG simply because of the way it's built. Others do though and I respect that. It has a lot of great qualities about it like the graphics and the way they patch their system is awesome when compared to the amount of downtime produced by WoW, EQ2, etc... One day other MMO companies will see this and begin incorporating what GW has done right. Until then, I'm hoping GW will see the vacuum between them and SOE, Blizzard, etc.. and create a true MMORPG based on their engine

I'm just worried about the guy that builds the female avatar and then spends an hour making sure he has the right hair style and color to go with outfit.

Oh role-play...as in...
Those rangers named Legolas
Those assassins named Naruto
Those warriors named Leeroy
Yea...we have plenty.
GW's RP is pretty boring to me, all I do now is PvP or running around in GH

But that the thing, this is a Role Playing Game
Haven't we had this discussion before?

Anyone who calls any of these games MMORPGs is either seriously deluded or just lazy -- or they don't know what the abbreviation stands for.
MMOG is what they are. Calling them anything else is a lie.
Not to say there's like 34 armor sets for each profession that you can mix and match to get...
34 choose 5 = 278 256

GW is no more or less an RPG than any other RPG.
