This is definately a good move, unless, and here's the caveat.. $OE takes it over...

SOE could do a good job with it. SW:G was a Raph Koster/LucasArts mess up, not SOE.

I could see Cryptic doing STO. While I've never played any of their games, I've heard good things about their "City of Heroes/City of Villans" games. It's got to be a better direction than P2 or SOE.

This means STO can get back on the road without being tied up for 10 years.  Like others, lets hope Paramount/CBS have found good people to push forward with development.

This doesn't neccesarily mean anything of the sort.  As someone else posted this could be an attempt by P2 to move the asset beyond the reach of creditors.  It could have gone to some other second rate developer.  I know you want to blame Perpetual but the reality is that the liscense holder hasn't exactly been a good steward of it and the blame should lie ultimately with them, not the developers.  The liscense holder can dictate the terms of any agreement and guide the development.  We still don't know if they have learned their lesson yet or if they have any clue what to do with it.

Don't worry, my optimisim is in check.  I have never trusted Paramount to properly care for thier franchise.  There have been too many bad Star Trek products to give them the benefit of the doubt.  I would hope with recent changes that normal trends would lost.

I could see this  going 2 different ways.

    1) The powers that be behind Star Trek (Paramount Studios) wants a game so they hire P2 and as things go on Paramount says "we should make this game more for the masses, this way we'll get more people to play", P2 and them start talking about what to add into the game and what to take out and maybe P2 said "we can't do this, we have to make this game properly or no Star Trek fans will play it", and Paramount maybe didn't care, they just wanted the money.  Since P2 signed a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) they have to keep their mouths shut, and it looks like its their fault.

    Or

    2) P2 Suggests to Paramount that they make the game more mainstream for everyone and start talking about what to add and what not to and Paramount can't handle it so they fire them.

I guess we'll never know what happened and as long as a good game is made I don't really care.  Cryptic may be a good company to make it as long as they don't make the whole game instance.  I can see the space area being open for everyone, you can send a distress signal if you come into trouble.  I would like to see no guilds, everyone who's federation works together, everyone who's klingon works together (there can be some allies with federation and other races, and there of course will be other races within the federation).  But guilds would make everything seem less Star Trek.  If you're in a battle and need help any federation ship in the area should be able to come and help you, and get credit for helping you.  In other words I guess you can say there would be a loose guild system, but anyone in the federation or allied with the federation is one big guild and so on with other races.  I can see maybe planet missions being instances, but that may even be kind of strange because you wouldn't be able to call for help if you need it.  You should be able to orbit a planet, beam down, do your objectives, emergency beam up if you have trouble (and there isn't something keeping you from beaming up), you should be able to call for help if you need it and anyone that can help should if they want.  If your with a team and one person dies in battle they shouldn't be able to beam back down and help, the rest of the team should finish it without you, and you shouldn't get any more experience for it because you died.  If everyone dies then you have to start the mission over.  Those are just preliminary ideas.

I really hope its a good game, I've been looking forward to STO and Stargate Worlds for a long time.  We need more good Sci-fi MMO's.

Although I don't completely trust Paramount to take care of the product that Gene Roddenberry gave them, I do trust that Cryptic Studios will do a great job with STO and bring it out to it's full potential.

At least one solid IP saved from possible ruin by the crappy clutches of Perpetual or P2 or whatever they call themselves theese days.

    Greetings Humans,

It has come to my attention that further Federation propaganda attempts under the title "Star Trek Online" have ceased.

It is the hope of the Romulan Star Empire that any future simulations, considered or actual, include the Rihannsu (romulan) people.  It is plainly obvious that our agents in the early 21st century have put an end to this propaganda plot, any future developers should also be forewarned.

This is a time for celebration, that the ongoing propaganda vehicle known as "Star Trek" has been stopped from excluding not only the Rihannsu people, but the followers of Kahless as well.  We consider any attempts to simulate the intricate politics of the Alpha/Beta quadrants without its most vital members to be, at best, foolhardy.

Now is the time to take stock of what makes "Star Trek" so compelling and to make sure that is contained in any possible future sim or "mmo".  An earlier comment was made as to the death of "Star Trek".  I daresay that in an era in Earth's history where people trade security for freedom and the rise of fascism, it is difficult for a story of hope like Star Trek to thrive.  All the more reason to keep it alive, in its FULL and COMPLETE form.

It is obvious from Perpetual's business practices that they lacked Mnhei'sahe, so I, for one, will not lament their passing.

I Agree wholeheartedly. we need a "real" studio with major clout, talent base, and reputation to bring this ONline game too life. So many people want this game to work, trekkies and non trekkies looking for something different. unfortunately we wont be seeing anyting for atleast another year or more if at all.

What mess? Oh you mean the mess were they actually had the balls to drop a game before making you guys pay 50 bucks for crap. Im not really a big P2 supporter anymore because apparently they have issues, but that doesnt mean what they did with GnH wasn't the right thing. I guess you would of rather it see the light of day and waste money on a faulty product like certain other games. GnH had the chance to be good, but it ran out of time and money to develop a product. I have yet to play a game were mobs can actually kick your ass and do special abilitys. Yes the combat was buggy, but if polished would of changed the way people play mmo's combat wise. Pretty sure STO would of ended up the same way. Either way goodluck to whatever company is getting this. My bet is on Cryptic Studios or UbiSoft.

As soon as I found out they laid ppl off who were employed for GnH, I ran to the store and got my money back for the pre-order. I knew they were going to cancel development. :D

No, I think Sigil still takes first place.

Seriously tho its probably just as well this game has died. I mean just look at its roleplayers would YOU want to play with people who roleplayed like that?

I want to see a Star Trek MMORPG to come out within the next five years. I think that would be really cool. I think Cryptic would be a good candidate for the Star Trek Online project, as would Blizzard.  If Cryptic Studios got this project, they would probably become even more famous. They created the first superhero and supervillain MMORPG, and they are currently working on a Marvel Universe MMORPG. If they were to get a Star Trek MMORPG project, they might become bigger than Blizzard, but I don't know... Blizzard is pretty big. But anyways, if either one of them got that MMORPG, I'm sure they would bring it out to it's full potential.

Trust me when I say that the last thing you want to see is a massively popular Star Trek game.

okay... i dont want to sound critical or mean, but... how the hell do you know what i want? yes, i do want to see a star trek massively multiplayer online game. wanna know why? ive always dreamed of commanding my own starship and because america and the rest of the planet wont get there shit straight and decide to put all their money towards battles and war and fighting and shit... i dont see that kind of technology coming out for at least another 50 or 60 years and by that time... ill probably be dead. the only way i can fulfill a dream like that is behind the world of virtual reality and video gaming and stuff like that... and my want is to see a star trek or some other mmorpg like star trek to come out.
