Last fall, they push out their financials reporting that all is good and on schedule with AoC and less than a week later, BOOM, March 25 is the new delay. Friday, they have a major press conference that all is well and they are commited to March 25 as the release date. Then within two days, Funcom pushes the release date back to May 20. Something stinks at Funcom as one hand has no freak'n clue what the other is doing at that company. They need to get act together and just be honest with us.
I believe in companies that push back launches to make games are great as they possibly can. However, I have no respect and will not financial support a company that consistant our right LIES to their community.
This is the 6th launch push back and I can deal with that. Last fall, I can see as a mistake in financials going out one week and then the delay going the next. But after a press release where they say they are commited to March 25th as launch day and two days later see a push back to May 20, I don't think so. Enough of the lies and false information.
The push back didn't lose you customers, the outright LIES to the community did.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is:

"Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product."

You might want to read the facts again a bit. Not to defend much, but the developers -DID- believe that they would release the game March 25th when they last said it. According to the interview, the decision to delay was long in the talks, but not known to many people outside a very high level and only announced even to the majority of the company that weekend.
*shrug* You sound rather bitter, like many people. I guess i can understand that, but I for myself will just wait. I'm in no hurry and to be honest, FunCom hasn't lied to me more than any other gaming company (HOUSING WILL BE IN THE FIRST EXPANSION PACK OR BEFORE!!! Anyone remember Blizzard continually saying so? *smirk* Hooray!!)

i wasnt following this game that closely and i dont know what they have said but you make some harsh accusations. can u post the statements they made about the release date or some link to the movies?
I need more vespene gas.
According to press releases, they did in fact believe in a 3/25/08 release...but th at changed. No lies.
Just be happy that they are commited to launching a good product.
The large beta stress test was AFTER the Friday news conference--that should tell you something.

Seriously, you sir, are really posting a lot of things that simply make no sense. Not to be insulting or anything, but judging from your other posts on this subject, you are simply around to bash the game. *shrug*

I have learned not to get my hopes up for mmorpg releases and I don't expect them to launch ln their posted release dates. I am looking forward to AOC and other games coming in 2008. Some have been delayed many times and I used to get frustrated like the OP, but now I just shift my attention to another game currently out and keep waiting on the future games.
For whatever reason, Funcom pushed the date. I don't think they lied about it, I think they just want to achieve a very high standard with their final product, which is something I give them alot of credit for. The level of polish at release is a big factor for me when I try a new mmo. LotRO isn't the greatest mmo, but it was polished right from launch thanks to a very long development and testing period. We mmo gamers just need a little more patience.
Im glad their cleaning out serious problems/ bugs before lunch. And for OP, people like you will always complain, no matter what, if it hadn't been the delay, you would have axed them over all the bugs in game anyway... move on and find your next game to complain about, you wont be missed.
Yes, Tymora, I should have learned that lesson a long time ago. I've had my hopes up about AoC for years now only to be let down again.

If I'm going to speculate - as everybody else is doing - I would say it's not a coincidence that they decided to delay after the Oslo-event. I think that in the event they got a few suggestions and perhaps the visitors pointed out a few problems Funcom has been uncertain about. Both from a design and a technical view. Maybe this tipped the scale and they realized they need 8 more weeks. Sometimes it's hard to see things like this when you're in the middle of it. And again I must point out that this is entirely speculation from my side.
From the Gamona preview I think I remember the pre-viewer saying that he told Funcom he didn't like that you could craft anywhere. There should be proper crafting tools situated at key-areas. He also said that Funcom admitted this was something they were uncertain about and that they had to think about it. Maybe it's stuff like this that tipped the scale into a delay?
People need to get a grip with reality. You're not going to get married with the company. If they release a good product, we'll play it, if not, we won't. Same with any other MMO company.
I think all MMOs are released too soon. In every beta I've been in, I post that they should delay release.
I am not in AOC beta, but I am sure that when they do release it, it will be too soon.
Delays are a very good thing. Releasing a game too early is the kiss of death.
Thank you for proving my point. You don't tell the world all is fine one week and the next week push back six months. You don't have your PR department tell the world on Friday we are commited to launching March 25 on Friday and before the weekend is over, push the launch date back until May 20th. That is insane. That was a freak'n Funcom press conference where they told the world they were commited to March 25th. How many of those reporters at the Funcom press conference that told the world Friday that Funcom was commited to March 25 retracted their story to say the date has been pushed back to May 20th? It is funny how it is HUGE news that everything is ok and hush hush when management gets caught telling lies. What is even more depressing is some people accept it. There is a thing called ETHICS in business and what we saw from Funcom this past weekend wasn't very ethical.

Best to not launch than rather launch an unfinished game. The question is how unfinished is it really. It took over 5 years to put it together and I don't see how an extra 8 weeks is going to solve anything. I suspect we won't see this game until later in the year despite the new launch date.
As stated, I can see why you might be angry. *shrug* I am more relaxed. I don't care about the push-back, I was mildly annoyed when they suddenly announced it after first saying they were committed (particularly because I previously defended them here).
But honestly...it's just a freaking game. When it comes out, I will play it and until then, I have other things to keep me busy.

OP, do you have ANY experience in Corporate business?
There are many layers of people working a project like this. The "top brass" are the ones calling the shots.
The developers are doing their job while others make changes for whatever reason they choose.
Have you ever worked in an IT environment in any capacity? $hit happens, ALL the time...
Anything can go wrong during the development from hardware failure to software programming that takes time to identify and resolve.
You can be T'd Off for whatever you choose but the folks making MMOs are busting their humps to get it completed and working the way it's supposed to. For YOU!
OP, you would probably Bash them the same way if it was released unfinished with issues.
But in the end you can feel the way you choose....I wouldn't want your perspective on life....GL!
People are actually upset that a MMO is being delayed?
The have been poleshing this game for 6 months, one would think it's ready by now. Game dosent look much like the original plan. TCOS looks way more appealing to me at this state since funcom have never been trustworthy and them being in charge of expansions/patches trew me off from start, that is if this product is any good to begin with.
Who knows
They are actualy listening to the beta testers, sorry you dont like that.
The fact they are delaying it is great. The way in which they are communicating with the public is complete b.s. It would have been MUCH better for them to tell the world at their Friday press conference they were delaying instead of preaching the party line of being commited to March 25th when they knew for a fact that was a lie.
Again, the delay isn't the problem. It is Funcom's pattern of deceive the community that is my issue.

The problem, as I see it, is not that they are delaying AoC.
I think that is very wise.
The problem, I think, is that they may not be delaying it enough.
Based on the descriptions of the features, graphics, and other things in the game now, I suspect that whatever engine they have running it will not be sufficiently optimized to allow the majority of subscribers to actually play the game when the servers are under full load.
Funcom is notorious for the poor performance of Anarchy Online. Now, I have heard many people say that Funcom does not want to make the same mistake again.
But that does not mean they will not make the same mistake again. And that is what I expect is underway.
I would like to see some fully open to the public Stress Test weekends, similar to what WoW provided. Clients provided through Fileplanet and other fast-download service providers. Funcom should find out how AoC performs under real customer loads BEFORE they declare it Gold and ready to sell.
Otherwise, it WILL be another Anarchy Online.
And no one wants that.
whens war? :<
