Sharing a bit of information, since I am Chinese myself. I'm currently in the U.S.
The government have already tried to regulate the MMO industry. This may be a bit hard for others to grasp, but China is trying to maintain its old ideals towards ..everything, but especially education.
MMORPG is one of the most ...shall we say distracting? things in regards to education. The Chinese government have already placed in a system known as "Fang Chen Mi," or literally "Anti-addiction." but it doesn't quite work well.
How the system works is that it requires the players to register using a Chinese Social Security ID, and it limits the numbers of hours a non-mature (person under 18) they can spend per day. On the game I played for a while, Demi-Gods and Semi Devils (Based on a Kungfu novel by Louis Cha), a minor is limited to 3 hours per day before EXP is cut in half, up to a maximum of five hours, which then you would be prevented from logging in altogether.
However, the system isn't working. Social Security Generators, in addition to the reluctance of companys to adhere to this standard makes this policy extremely difficult to enforce. Thus, the recent cracking-down to me seems to be more like a last resort than anything.
A point of interest: most of the newer MMORPGs made in China are item mall based, while the older ones with larger followings are based on monthly subscriptions. You can see why some of the companies are so against governmental regulations.
In my hometown of Harbin, when I visited a few years ago, the owner of a NetCafe sold "Adult IDs" to students who wished to beat the system. =
Corruption? I think so too. But more importantly, you have to look at where Chinese society is going. Gone were the days of confucian ideals and the stereotyped Asian. The majority now follows "Xiang Qian Kan," or literally "Look forward." This is a pun on "Look to the money."
Family is still valued, Bobfish, but it is disappearing. If I can blame you "Imperalist Capitalist Pigs" or whatever new label they came up with (it was Dog of Imperialism when I left China,) it's the utter devastation and corruption of the Chinese youth.
OH MY GOD. THEY ARE ACTUALLY THINKING FOR THEMSELVES FOR ONCE. THAT IS BAD!!
(Sarcasm should also be dripping off your screen at the moment.)
No, but going back to my point. I think the liberalization of China causes disappearances of traditional values. When I went back to my hometown and visited my old elementary school, every single child there told me they wanted to make money. Every. Single. One.
China, in my humble opinion has ceased to be a "communist" society. Its market mechanism lacks monitoring as China gets cheated out of taxes (if you look at Chinese News, you'll see a ton of stuff like this), its society leans towards a one-party dictatorship with succession among party lines, and civil rights is really nonexistant.
I should know. I know people who got banned from MMOs because they were discussing politics. Isn't it nice how if we were in China right now the JFJ would be at your doors with a warrant of arrest now?
I read the article with mixed feelings. I am Chinese by ethnicity. I identify myself as American. I....
Aw, hell. Well. It's about damn time they did SOMETHING about it. My cousin's addicted to one of those himself.
bobfish, the problem is that the other countries you mentioned (US/EU) are not communistic or dictatorships. In other words, the government does not control our lives. THIS IS A GOOD THING.
if you believe that the government doesn't control our lives in the west you need to have a little bit of a wake up call. It amazes me how people can spout about the evils of other countries when they dont actually know what the reality of living in them is like regardless of what their local 'accepted authorities' on the subjects say while of course living 100s of miles away from the problem... and not seeing the equivalent on their own doorstep.
Mass projection (in a psychological sense) if u ask me...always better to see the demon/shadow elsewhere rather than in your own home

thought this was a discussion of chinese regulations, not gold sellers?
and what is the problem with gold sellers anyway?? i bought the game, i made the char, i farmed the gold.. let me do whatever the hell i want with it.. currently i only play wow and on my server the only "problem" is the trade chat spam.. annoying to look at, but i dont see it ruining the game economy.. and if blizz really wanted to handle the "problem" why not just ban all the farming/selling accounts? having to buy new accounts all the time would shurely put em out of bizz in the end.. same thing with BG leechers.. have a gm monitor the BG's just one hour a day and ban the leechers from BG's for a week.. within a month there would be allmost none left im shure.. tbh i dont think blizz care, they just make semi-regulations on theese issues to silence the whiners..
but actually, if i bought 5000g i might be able to buy your world drop epic you couldnt sell before.. and then u can buy something from someone else and so on.. in the end it will make anyone buying/selling stuff richer...
yeah gold farmers are paid crap.. compared to our western standards.. a lot of em make a decent living that way.. it enables em to save up a couple of years and move on to something theyd rather do.. and a lot of em go to a cafe and play on their own account when they get off from work..
now whats really ruining economy (in wow) is S1 gear for honor.. craftable epics is so much harder to sell now.. gj blizz! but nah, lets blame the gold farmers...

This is a shame in my opinion, it's one of the few developed countries I've been to that has proper values and manners. I am though getting old myself and I guess these values will be lost in all countries eventually.
P.S. Yes, all men do have to serve in the military when they turn 18, but for how long I do not know.
much as they do in some scandinavian and european countries as in national service
Not quite true, in Sweden where I live all men need to fill out an application to join the army (more or less) I belive about 50% are called in for tests (physical and psycological) and in the end it is probably reaching as low as 10% soon that actually need to make military service. So basicly, if you tell em you dont want to, you mostly dont have to. Though of course, if you get picked and refuse or dont show up at testing you risk fines or in extreme cases jail.
If you continue on the subject of this kind of national service it has in many countries around the world been the spark that creates democracy, that if I and everyone I know is ready to go to war for this country, I want it to be my country.
If the problem is GOLDSELLERS, the solution is DON'T BUY GOLD.
I have never bought any sort of in game item off a vendor outside the game. I don't ever intend to. If you want to stop the goldsellers, don't buy the gold. Simple solution.
Oh, and I know it's impossible to stop. There are always going to be morons who must have a billion gold or be power leveled to the top. But if only we could get rid of those idjits... LOL Anyway, I'll keep doing my part by not buying if you will keep doing your part.

Aye. It is indeed a shame. Though i wouldn't say China is yet developed. The gap between poor and rich is so significant that there needs to have great change before it can be solved.
I've read some conflicting opinions over it in this thread, and I really did enjoy the debate - intensity is always good.
Here's a question to toss out at y'all though: Nowadays, we go OMFGHAXX!! at any attempt to regulate the internet. But if you think about it, shouldn't there be ...rules? I mean, I see a fine balance between Warden and Spyware, but shouldn't there be regulations for the player's own protection?

thnx for that breath of reality there
You're more than welcome. I hope I can help clarify some of the misconceptions regarding Chinese MMORPGs. XD
gotta love ignorant Americans... its education really... the misinformed.
Everything you said about China are called misconceptions. As for the Chinese American. Yes I believe that person. He/She is right on the money and let me add a few more to the comment.
I am an American in China teaching English. Its great I love it. But do any of you truly know what a communist "social republic" truly is but labeling it as a dictatorship because of Cuba.
In a true Socialist Republic ideals everybody is suppose to make the same... get the same stuff etc. Lots are government controlled. These are the ideals that Chen Min Mao(spelling- i only know how to say it) wanted for China.
China does hold "democratic" elections. But communist party always wins. Tell me what election in US or China that doesnt have an election with Big Wig companies flashing money around trying to sway the vote?
anyway, Saying that China is not a free enterprise is kind of a misconception. I found at times this country to be more free the America. I am able to walk around with a beer in hand and not worry about getting ticketed for "open alchohol" I am able to do anything I did in America. However, I do not and will not bash anything to do with China. This is not only a respect thing because I am in their country. I feel it to be also well maybe "not good" practice for any person in this country.
Now I work for a school that is totaly private owned no government control whatsoever. The guy who owns it is rich as hell. This is no different then any other company in America. China has moved so much towards capitalism you will be amazed. Mcdonalds, KFC, Subway, etc. tons of american restaurants and companies are here. But like the other person who posted... China is losing a fighting battle with western culture and its OLD eastern culture.
What makes it even harder is that the olympics are coming here. China has taken great measures to still only on to its old ideals. I have to say Beijing is the center of China, and it is quite modern with its city but still holds on tightly to its "old ways". Cities like guang zho and Shanghai have moved more towards western ways.
somebody mentioned that there is a huge gap between rich and poor. Yeah just like america, but not so much of a middle class... however there is still some. But in the future this is a dillemma that China will face and with its government control, it wont be hard to fix.
As for the MMO thing....I read something was coming... knew it would happen.... but those illegal are what the previous poster said. They are trying to crack down on the ones who are selling those things to children so that they can play longer then the time intended. They also want underagers to not play online games that include "killing" another player.
doesnt seem that bad to me. If i was Chinese, It wouldnt affect me as much. I am old enough.
Whats funny is so many Americans think they are free but to be honest. An American is less free then a Chinese person. We as Americans have SO many laws stopping us doing stuff that really doesnt matter much.
in anycase, thought i should straighten some things up for some misinformed.
Americas economy is on the brink of crashing hardcore. The criminal empire building war mongers have this country nice and hijacked. Our scam of a federal reserve prints up it's counterfit money to keep it going for now but people really need to wake up and realize these quick fixes are why this economy is crashing. You can't just keep printing money out of thin air.
US dollar is worth less then Canadian. I've never seen that. Our citizens are being turned into cattle by Rupert Murdochs scam of a media stranglehold (this is worldwide as he owns about 90% of all media around the globe) thanks to those scumbag Rockefellers and gang. Our military is being bled by oil and big buisness. I served in Iraq and spent most of my time escorting oil companies. Between blackwater, halliburten and Bush owned company the Carlial group our tax dollars are being dumped into these criminals pockets.
America needs to wake up and vote Ron Paul in so we can legalize our Constitution again.

Get off your high horse teach, you are yelling at a bunch of kids who spend their time playing games, course a large portion of em are ignorant, theyre highly sheltered. This tirade of yours is akin to going out to the streets, find some homeless people and yelling at them for not being rich.
Family is still valued, Bobfish, but it is disappearing. If I can blame you "Imperalist Capitalist Pigs" or whatever new label they came up with (it was Dog of Imperialism when I left China,) it's the utter devastation and corruption of the Chinese youth.

ok since you bring up such a bad analogy.... let me explain why its "bad".
so basically, you are telling me im preaching a bunch of homeless people because they are not rich? funny... but the real analogy is that it would be the Homeless people screaming their knowledge about "how to be rich".... If they are wrong on the info... then i who knows... would call them out on it. Just like i did now.
thats the real analogy.... if they don't know about China... then they shouldn't scream about it. hence why i said misinformed or misconception... those are not knocks on the people... thats lack of knowing...
nice try on the analogy...
these misinformed are not here to just talk... they are spouting off info that is wrong! not the other way around.
so at least get your analogies straight.
oh and one last thing, you will find most of the people here are most likey in their teens, 20's, you will even be more amazed how many are in their 30's and up. which is a blanket generalization in itself

No see you miss the point sir, Your first line says that Americans are ignorant, and now somehow you are trying to say something about my "blanket statement."?
Of course people in their 30s are sheltered, they grew up sheltered, theyll probably stay sheltered. To quote the singer from Everlast. "Where is you end up depends on where you start."
Secondly the only thing we here in America have more of than ignorance, is hypocricy, thanks for emphasizing that for me. cheers!

Aye, friend. That is a problem in the US, though not readily observant. In China...it is easily found.

Im sure that if you compare total numbers China has more poor people. But I would be interested in seeing the percentage of rich vs poor of the two countries. Personally in the places Ive lived Ive come into contact with a lot of poor people over the years, truth be told at one point in my life I was one of em. (trust me nothing is as humbling as eating dry ramen noodles before settling down for the night in the back of an abandoned hatchback down by the railroad tracks)
My point being, Chinas having more poor people doesnt detract from the problem we have here.
No see you miss the point sir, Your first line says that Americans are ignorant, and now somehow you are trying to say something about my "blanket statement."?
first off, I didnt think i would have to say "Americans in this thread are ignorant" , but i guess from somebody who cant think on his own needs it spelled out for him, i guess I do... Does that mean that ALL AMERICANS ARE... NO... omg man... we are in a thread... im talking about the people in this thread.
never said your statement was a blanket statement... learn to read or get hooked on phonics... let me quote for you and explain since you have problems...
"oh and one last thing, you will find most of the people here are most likey in their teens, 20's, you will even be more amazed how many are in their 30's and up. which is a blanket generalization in itself"
explaination for you---> means the statement i said right there is a blanket statement nothing about saying yours... last 2 words should help you... "in itself" meaning this statement... wow!
Of course people in their 30s are sheltered, they grew up sheltered, theyll probably stay sheltered. To quote the singer from Everlast. "Where is you end up depends on where you start." quoting singers are we? claiming somebody is sheltered because of their lack of knowledge is not a good excuse for somebody to spout off information that is wrong.
Secondly the only thing we here in America have more of than ignorance, is hypocricy, thanks for emphasizing that for me. cheers! the only thing you are showing is your ignorance... thanks... i wont be replying either. however thanks for showing yours!

And they let you teach kids with that kind of attitude? good god.
P.S. If China is so worried about the future of their children enough so that they ban MMO's; why would they be hiring people who cant handle one obnoxious guy on a forum without resorting to immature insults? Personally if they are that concerned about the well being of their future generations, perhaps they shouldnt be putting the still developing minds of their kids in YOUR hands?
And they let you teach kids with that kind of attitude? good god.
truth must hurt huh? lol what attitude that I am actually correcting their wrong information... or correcting your actions for coming up with an excuse for them for giving wrong information?

Personally if they are that concerned about the well being of their future generations, perhaps they shouldnt be putting the still developing minds of theirat kids in YOUR hands?
like i said you really need to learn to read, and you dont know me... but that statement right there just tells me more of what kind of person you are. anyways, you will most likely respond to this with another smart alec remark. So have a good day... and keep fighting for people who give wrong information
The situation in China was very different. There was a time where China was fighting in every major soviet war theatre, from Korea to Vietnam and Cambodia. We (yes I am a Chinese) lost millions of lives. We need to draft a lot of poor farmers, and ex-soldiers then idle after WW2, yes and there was a period when China has millions of active and reserves.
Then comes 1974 and then the reform, the Chinese gov't need to modernise the economy. Soldiers were not the best way to go when you want to build an economy (well all builder games says that too), so they have to trim the army down to something like 3M, and even among the 3M a lot of them are actually subsidized farmers in remote provinces, farming but also trained part-time in military stuffs. Basically the army paid the soldiers a tiny subsidy and send them back to production in provinces where they need more soldiers in reserve (provinces with separative movements) while not wanting to pay a huge standing army.
The Chinese is also trying to modernise the army. They need soldiers who works with computers, not with rifles, so they are not forcing people into the army, basically they retired the old infantry man and replace them with modernised soldiers with hi-tech knowledge, who fly a plane and man a sub instead of standing with a rifle+bayonet.
There are a lot of twists into the story. Some more details like Chinese farmers trying to enlist in the army to escape the woos of land tax: farmland tax, illegal but still collect (corruption of course) drove many young farmers to the point of bankrupcy, so they find ways to escape, and joining the army allows them to be removed from the list of "farmers" in the local county. ... Lots of side stories. It depends on which village and which province you are talking about, and when. Today, farm product prices soared to the sky and farmers are fighting off bandits who steal or plunder farms, instead of trying to escape into the army.
Most westerners are ignorant about China, it's partly the fault of the west and partly the fault of China. That is changing, it has nothing to do with this being the internet and a bunch of MMO players. I knew very little about the place until I actually went there.
Back to Raistlin25's question.. I don't think there should be rules on the internet. An ISP or other host should of course regulate what they have on their servers, but no federal laws imo are needed.
I do however think the gaming industry needs a regulator, a watchdog of some kind that ensures companies don't produce substandard bug ridden products all the time. I really don't think there is any excuse for releasing a game with KNOWN bugs when they are all price fixed and make a substantial amount of profit. Obviously most of this profit goes into the publisher's pockets, so I have no sympathy for them, developers don't get rich making games.
That's just some crazy news. China's government needs to realize that it isn't just their nation thats affected with game nation, but just because their population in China is just incredibly a lot. And not to mention the overwhelming amount of Gold farmers in China who literally spends hundreds of hours farming for gold in MMORPGs. I think China's government is aware of that.
Comments
My cousin's addicted to one of those himself.
much as they do in some scandinavian and european countries as in national service
if you believe that the government doesn't control our lives in the west you need to have a little bit of a wake up call. It amazes me how people can spout about the evils of other countries when they dont actually know what the reality of living in them is like regardless of what their local 'accepted authorities' on the subjects say while of course living 100s of miles away from the problem... and not seeing the equivalent on their own doorstep.
Mass projection (in a psychological sense) if u ask me...always better to see the demon/shadow elsewhere rather than in your own home
thnx for that breath of reality there
thought this was a discussion of chinese regulations, not gold sellers?
and what is the problem with gold sellers anyway?? i bought the game, i made the char, i farmed the gold.. let me do whatever the hell i want with it.. currently i only play wow and on my server the only "problem" is the trade chat spam.. annoying to look at, but i dont see it ruining the game economy.. and if blizz really wanted to handle the "problem" why not just ban all the farming/selling accounts? having to buy new accounts all the time would shurely put em out of bizz in the end.. same thing with BG leechers.. have a gm monitor the BG's just one hour a day and ban the leechers from BG's for a week.. within a month there would be allmost none left im shure.. tbh i dont think blizz care, they just make semi-regulations on theese issues to silence the whiners..
but actually, if i bought 5000g i might be able to buy your world drop epic you couldnt sell before.. and then u can buy something from someone else and so on.. in the end it will make anyone buying/selling stuff richer...
yeah gold farmers are paid crap.. compared to our western standards.. a lot of em make a decent living that way.. it enables em to save up a couple of years and move on to something theyd rather do.. and a lot of em go to a cafe and play on their own account when they get off from work..
now whats really ruining economy (in wow) is S1 gear for honor.. craftable epics is so much harder to sell now.. gj blizz! but nah, lets blame the gold farmers...
This is a shame in my opinion, it's one of the few developed countries I've been to that has proper values and manners. I am though getting old myself and I guess these values will be lost in all countries eventually.
much as they do in some scandinavian and european countries as in national service

Good Hunting.
This is a shame in my opinion, it's one of the few developed countries I've been to that has proper values and manners. I am though getting old myself and I guess these values will be lost in all countries eventually.

SHOHADAKU
Get off your high horse teach, you are yelling at a bunch of kids who spend their time playing games, course a large portion of em are ignorant, theyre highly sheltered. This tirade of yours is akin to going out to the streets, find some homeless people and yelling at them for not being rich.
This is a shame in my opinion, it's one of the few developed countries I've been to that has proper values and manners. I am though getting old myself and I guess these values will be lost in all countries eventually.

The gap between the poor and the rich? Thats not just China my friend, thats a situation we have here in the US as well.

________________________________________________________________________
ok since you bring up such a bad analogy.... let me explain why its "bad".
so basically, you are telling me im preaching a bunch of homeless people because they are not rich? funny... but the real analogy is that it would be the Homeless people screaming their knowledge about "how to be rich"....
Of course people in their 30s are sheltered, they grew up sheltered, theyll probably stay sheltered. To quote the singer from Everlast. "Where is you end up depends on where you start."
Secondly the only thing we here in America have more of than ignorance, is hypocricy, thanks for emphasizing that for me. cheers!
This is a shame in my opinion, it's one of the few developed countries I've been to that has proper values and manners. I am though getting old myself and I guess these values will be lost in all countries eventually.

Aye, friend. That is a problem in the US, though not readily observant. In China...it is easily found.

And they let you teach kids with that kind of attitude? good god.

truth must hurt huh? lol what attitude that I am actually correcting their wrong information... or correcting your actions for coming up with an excuse for them for giving wrong information?
