I can’t talk about what context other have heard the phrase “go back to WoW”, but any time I’ve heard it it’s because someone was complaining about a game not doing things the same way WoW does. Even when someone doesn’t mention WoW by name and they talk about “what’s worng” with a game the context is pretty clear, they are saying “WoW does it differently so the way game X does it is wrong”.
The problem is that people playing game x are doing so for a reason. It’s not like they have never heard of WoW or never tried it. On the contrary they have almost certainly tried it and found it lacking. Complaining about a game they do like not doing things the way WoW does isn’t going to get very far under these circumstances because people are playing because the game isn’t like WoW, and they don’t want it to become more like WoW.
People who want to be playing WoW should go ahead and play WoW rather then complain about things in other games that are different then they are in WoW, hence “go back to WoW” comments when they do
Every non-WoW MMO feels inadequate, and the players feel defensive. WoW got a lot of things very right and has crushed a lot of people's ideas for what makes a good MMO, as their favorite MMO has 1/50th the player base of WoW, if it is lucky.
WoW got the death penalty right, it got the pacing right, and it got the "fun" quotient right. Other games are left looking obsolete and goofy. When you leave WoW, you are hit by how primitive the other MMO's tend to be in a lot of ways, and it bugs you. When you point out the problems, people fly off the handle, as they know the problems are there. Instead of fixing the problems, they embrace them as making them special.
A lot of people seem to lose sight of the fact that video games are supposed to be fun, not a chore. Arbitrary time sinks such as high death penalties, long regen times between fights, and long travel times are the marks of bad games that don't have enough content.

No they are the mark of games that want to create a level of tension and enhance the feeling of risk or accomplishment their players feel. Generally speaking only children enjoy games where there are no obstacles to overcome, the obstacles themselves are not the enjoyment but overcoming them is, so they are an essential part of what makes a game fun.
What quantifies WoW as "lowest of the low"? I would like to see some statistics that back up that these older games the OP refers to are of higher quality. Seems to me that DAOC went through some bad times back in the late Fall of 2003, didn't they? I have found a couple of old L 2 forum archives that show the thing to do back in March and April of 2004 was to try L 2's open beta. Many of the first great seiges were completed by veterans of AO and DAOC. These folks were extrememly disgruntled about nerfing and bad patches from those games back in the day. I also have seen some old archival material that speaks of quite a bit of duping and exploits in the old EQ.
At any rate, WoW as lowest of the low really does apply to me here. At least not for the vast numbers of professionals that play it for the sake of escapism and community. Many aren't "hard core" either. I am not a ahme.."fanboi" as the young hip hoppers like to say, but just a professional that enjoys various MMO's and the escape factor I can enjoy.

when AOL came out it was so simple and fun to use that millions jumped on the bandwagon. was this a bad thing? no, was it bad for its competitors? yes! simple things with gee whiz shiny things always attract the simple folks. they dont want complicated, they want quick, easy, and fun. this is where wow comes in, with the exception of the endgame raiding content that will NEVER be available to the majority of the "simpler folks" wow fits the bill for the masses. is it a good thing? i guess until those folks mature to more complicated things, until then wow gives these simpler folks instant fun and rewards in a huge setting no complicated mmo can.
imagine these simpler folk trying to play an mmo with more than two keystrokes (wow is after all macro heaven). like aol wow can tout maximum fun with minimum keystrokes, another plus for the simpler folks. In the end wow fills the niche for which it was intended, and does so in a spectacularly simple fashion.
as the simpler folks grow up and mature, like aol users they will migrate to find more challenges and then begin that search to fill the void the toys and simpler times left behind.

I have not read this thread but it is because WoW is not very indepth, you don't choose your side, you cant lose only gain, you dont have to group, no player owned structures or reason to be in a guild other than to group with, which you dont have to do. it is just easy and obviously aimed a less hardcore crowd.
And none of these things are bad. They are just preferences.
" you don't choose your side" - You choose you side to *some* degree but why is that important?
" you cant lose only gain" - Why is this bad? In fact, I think it is brilliant to take stress of losses away from players. Real life has enough stress. I don't want the same level of stress in my entertainment.
"you dont have to group" - What is wrong with giving the player choice? Yes, it is a MMORPG but heck, if some players want to go solo, let them do so.
"no player owned structures" - This one seems to be the biggest missing feature. But OTOH, how many really wants their own house?
"it is just easy" - I find this is the main strength of the game. It is entertainment and I only have 2 hours to relax a day. I don't want to commit to a raid that last for 6 hours and I want to have fun in the 2 hours that I have. There is really nothing wrong with easy games.

As a current World of Warcraft player (and have been for years) I have to agree with player housing. It'd be a lot of fun. The other thing needed is a graphics update. Not required, but a way to really 'ramp it up' for those who have the systems that could do so. All other points, I agree with the Nariusseldon's answers. I hate losing experience because it books my day when I have other plans and is a kind of griefing. I enjoy solo play when I'm on at odd hours. I like the game being 'easy' from an addict's perspective, it gets them moving on to other grind-fest games thereby letting me enjoy a positive roleplay atmosphere.

You just dont get it. EQ, and UO were pretty much underground, and a lot of us liked it that way. It was our "style' if you will. Then came WoW, and all the dingleberry kids started playing it and it mainstreamed it. How would you feel if you had your own unique style, then suddenly every little kid in the world is wearing exactly what you like, thus turning what you liked into a corporate money-whore scheme . I know that feeling is what is going on, but that doesn't mean that WoW isn't a really good game. It also hurts when a game that you are emotionally invested in has a small fraction of the subscribers.

i bet you trolls wished the game your playing would be as succesfull as wow
Actually, it depends. If more successful means more kids (or just immature people in general), then I prefer less successful. When I played WoW, I just did not like the community. It was the same way with L2. Right now I play Eve and some EQ2 (wife thing) because I like the community. I'll admit though; EQ2 does have its moments.

I'm sure that playing the superbowl team against the toilet bowl team in Madden is alot of fun. WoW is too fast (pacing) with no loss (death penalty) columns. If you can't lose then what's the point of playing. I know that MMO's technically don't have the win or lose facet. But, a death penalty in many ways lets you know that you lost and should try another approach. I do agree that alot of games don't always balance downtime very well, but some games do balance things.
I thought WoW (when I played it two years ago) was like playing a tiered team against a low tiered team in the sports game of your choice. It was fun for awhile; however, it was not that challenging and got boring real fast.
I've heard that insult and I think it does definitely carry some truth. I have no problem with people who play WoW and I played it.
The reason people get this is cause they leave WoW and then start playing another game, differient world, differient features, and then complain about it not being the same way.
WoW is a cookie cutter game and you can't argue that.
I think it's good but nothing original at all, and when you leave the game to play say DAoC or EVE, and then basically say "this isn't enough like WoW"
you are just being obnoxious. The game is differient and honestly world of warcraft, as fun as it is, by no means an original concept.
They combined the storyline of an already made series with the features of a game that has been remade dozens of time. WoW just seems to show us that creativity in video games doesn't mean success and I think creativity and innovation is what you need in a game, It's the only way to make something fun that doesn't wear thin, through constant inovation.
Lately, with Tabula Rasa, and Pirates of the Burning sea released, I'm hoping people will realize that as well.
Basically, and this is a bit off topic but I don't care, I don't want to have someone come into my game and tell me that my game of choice should be this way or that way, just because their game of choice does things this way or that way. I have chosen [insert game here] precicely because I like the way it does things, or at least, I like the direction it's going, if it isn't quite as good as I want it to be.
WoW is GREAT for what it is. I don't think any of us are really saying that WoW is a bad game (at least most of us). We are just saying we would rather play something else, and if you are going to come pee in our pool then we don't want you to swim there.
You WoW fanboys can be just as closed minded and elite about your game as we (we meaning pretty much anyone who choses a game OTHER than WoW) are about our games. You don't understand why some people like to feel the pain of death, just as we don't understand why you like to be able to click the "win" button
One game does not fit all, as much as WoW players may think... They sure have the benefit of numbers.
The elitism that is RAMPANT around here concerning WoW...it is rediculous...

The EQ generation practically defined the term "hardcore elitist" in the MMO dictionary. No other game has produced the sheer number of hardcore pricks that game did. Can anyone say "Fires of Heaven" or "Ebonlore"?
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
You and your girlfriend or wife go with some friends your age to a nice restaurant to have some fancy steak dinners. One of your friends who is married brings his two young kids along. Once the sizzling top dollar steaks are served to your table, you hear one of the kids saying "Ewww dad, YUCK!". The childs father politely tells his child to behave and tells him in a sarcastic tone that not every dinner can be of McDonalds quality. This remark gets a good chuckle from most observers at the table, including the waiter. I've played World of Warcraft. And with all the childish bickering and whining especially when playing with almost any group I was ever invited into.. I never heard "Go back to UO" or "Go back to "EQ". However, when I've played "Eve" recently, Asheron's Call, and when I played Dark Age of Camelot a couple years back, certainly one of the biggest insults you can throw at somebody is to say something along the lines of "Go back to WoW, noob" And players that get told those words almost always get pissed and take it very personally, instantly trying to prove their worthiness to play whatever game it is that they are logged into. We certainly all know how popular World of Warcraft is, recently proclaiming 10 million active customers. But even with it's popularity, is it really such a low in overall quality in the general mmo community? Is WoW really "McDonalds compared to a fine quality steakhouse"? I mean everyone knows how many billions of burgers McDonalds has proclaimed to have sold (much like all the millions of customers Blizzard is so proud to make public). Quality very rarely equals Quantity. I personally think that World of Warcraft is a very high quality game, however it is just way too simple and has way too little actual challenge - atleast for me. However, it would be hard to say that some mmo that was more challenging but had a million bugs was "higher quality". World of Warcraft is a high quality game. But regardless of it's numbers, it sure seems to be the lowest of low and the laughing stock and where noobish players are condemned to so often inside more challenging and sophisticated mmos today. In that regard, World of Warcraft sure doesn't get a lot of respect. If you doubt me, fire up a free trial of Asherons Call and publicly ask on the general chat channel what players think about World of Warcraft. You'll be almost certain to draw laughter, insults and total abuse from anyone who even thinks you deserve an answer. Is it an over abused insult? It is funny? Is it a great insult? Is it ignorant? Oh yes.. if you want to flame me, that's perfectly fine. But as soon as you are done, "Go back to WoW" eh? {winks}

Any parent who think mcdonalds is quality is a bad parent.
Logical when you play wow you never here go back to UO or EQ first almost all wow players are new to scene secondly almost all who play wow and like that game they dont know there playing a below avarage game.
Its also bit narrowminded when you play lets say AC and some kids from wow start in AC and with there experience they fail to understand AC, if community in AC are thinking they are smarter then wow players, they should try learn the new kids from wow how to realy play a mmo like AC, instead of curse them to hell(wow), educate them about game is smarter then shout "go back to wow noob".
WoW is a very high quality game in areas of grinding, easy ,carebear, instance, jump in have fun and chatroom.
WoW is poor quality in quests, rpg, pvp, crafting and static mobs.
Dont forget you cant have 6billion steven hawkens isaac newtons lenardo da vincys.
So for every group you have a surten degree of style, quality, difficulty or lvl of intelligents.
WoW appeals to biggest group avarage people nothing wrong with that, if you play a game that need far more thinking, is harder overall and laugh at player base wow have then your not as smart as you think you are.

I loved SWG before the dark times.
But, SWG was a weird animal. If you read the official forums during its height, there was alot of trolling and griping. However, when you played the game; it had one of the best communities out there. Sure, it had its bad apples, but overall I enjoyed playing with other players in that game.
Even though it failed, I thought it had great potential. It was just mis-managed by the developers. They spent too much time nerfing, not knowing what direction to take the game, ignoring bugs and practicing bad customer service. The skill set system was great and allowed better character customization. Unfortunately, the nerfs and lack of planning got so bad on the developer's part that the game deterioated into a flavor the month where everyone wanted to be a certain template.
SWG vets generally feel betrayed by the game developers and are very vocal about it. If you played the game and got burned you would understand. If you didn't then I'm happy for you. However, I don't think the SWG gripe will go away anytime soon.

"I always think, its awesome how they took something that meant a great deal to my generation and whored it out to little kids, thus not only missing the whole point, but cheaping something that was at one time a defining trait of my age group.
P.S. its not about hardcore vs casual, or old vs new, its about orignal vs knockoffs. :P

You're one of those people who thinks ditches your previous 'favorite band' when their album sells more than 10,000 copies, aren't you?
In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

I know that feeling is what is going on, but that doesn't mean that WoW isn't a really good game. It also hurts when a game that you are emotionally invested in has a small fraction of the subscribers.
My youtube MMO gaming channel
And we prove why the phrase is used. Good job!
The elitism that is RAMPANT around here concerning WoW...it is rediculous...
When we were the only ones "playing" these games...whatever...
This whole..."I played UO Pre-Trammel...I pwn" ...is booty.
I was there with UO like everyone else...I just seem to remember the community as a tolerant bunch...same with the original class of EQ and AC...
Might as well post in the SWG "Vets" forum....please...don't let us go there...I mean, Isn't that dead horse nothing but a pink stain by now?
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
The game is differient and honestly world of warcraft, as fun as it is,
by no means an original concept.
Just another handsome boy graduate...
