from http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/81026-Marvel-Electronic-Arts-Cancel-Development-Deal
Marvel Comics and Electronic Arts have canned an agreement to develop games under the Marvel banner, the two companies announced today.
First announced in 2004, the contract between the two entertainment giants led to only one release, Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, released in 2005. The next planned release, a fighting game most recently in development at EA's Chicago studio before it was shut down, has been canceled.
In a statement to GameTap, an Electronic Arts representative said, "EA and Marvel have jointly agreed to discontinue development of the Marvel titles under the EA Games label. This was a business decision based on EA's portfolio strategy."
Marvel released a similar statement, but added the termination of the deal "will not affect Marvel's ongoing plans to release fighting games based on the Marvel properties in the future."
Kudo Tsunoda, the former general manager at the EA Chicago studio, recently announced he was leaving EA to take a position with Microsoft's Xbox division, although according to the GameTap report, it's unknown whether his departure has any bearing on the cancellation of the deal. ENDQUOTE
Dang - Looks like DC Online is the only Comicbook based Superhero MMO then.

Wow, where to begin. Ok, the Marvel MMO that was announced a while back may be cancelled but, and this is a huge one that you should take notice of, there has been NO announcement from either Marvel or Microsoft concerning it's demise.
The deal that broke is between, and pay attention here: Marvel and Electronic Arts. And the deal was for, and another point to pay the bleeping attention to, a fighting game. Nothing about Microsoft, nothing about Cryptic Studios, nothing about an MMO.
Once Microsoft, Cryptic, and Marvel come out and say that the Marvel MMO is dead then you can come post about it's demise but until then you do nothing but prove that you are an illiterate individual. Perhaps before you post you should actually read the articles you link to?

the OP has *fighting games* confused with mmo franchise

The crafting had better be a hell of a lot of fun then, if the fighting is out.

Well , lets not bash the OP. Its an understandable mistake.
SuperHero MMORPGs will be a very pleasant change from the endless number of Fantasy Based MMORPGS. I have little doubt that there is enough interest to warrent its development

I really don't know the value of a comic book based super hero MMORPG. They are NOT going to let you play spiderman or any famous heroes. So what is the point?
All you get is to have them as NPCs and look at them from time to time.
Try the 14 day trial of City of Heroes. You don't play a signature hero but you can play a superhero
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
I certainly enjoyed pre-CU Star Wars: Galaxies, but they didn't let me be Vader...
I am looking forward to a Marvel MMO, rather than DC Online.
I wouldn't want to play Spiderman, or the Vision. I want to play someone different. I always preferred Marvel over DC.
If done correctly a Marvel MMO could be huge. Imagine comic flashback story arcs like the Infinity Gauntlet or Weapon X origins. Heck even ties to current comic story arcs woud be nifty.

Marvel MMO was dead the second the <insert_insult_here> Microsoft wanted to do an exclusive XBOX360 game to be their "killer app"(an app that all by itself makes people buy hardware to run that app).
In the mmo scene the "no news good news" paradigm is quite the opposite.
It is very BAD news all the main stars(Marvel,Microsoft and Cryptic) choose to be quiet regarding the, everyday more extended, rumors of cancellation.
But dont get me wrong...I would cry tears of gold that would cure cancer if they finally hit the market with "Marvel Universe Online" but I cant find any reason for optimism.
With the success of CoH, and Marvel's recent successes at the box office, I can't believe they would let a chance to make a ton of money just slip away. Especially since Cryptic sold CoH to give themselves more time and money to dedicate to MUO. It's coming, just hold your britches for a bit there partner. How much have we heard about DC's MMO? I think these two rival companies just want to keep each other from being able to copy their ideas, or beat them to the punch by revealing their progress too early. I expect to hear something about MUO going into at least alpha by sometime this summer.
My issue with this is that comic book MMO's are a niche market already...and frankly there is ALREADY one out and it does an amazing job as far as I'm concerned. The thing here is...the only way they could make one which could steal me away is if they made it have the immersion of WoW, along with the ease of play on many machines and great UI, with the complete OWNAGE that is the CoH creation and class system.
Points to note from CoH
1: The enhancement system is the best thing since cake for such a game. Gear has to be out because I want to make my hero/villain look a certain way out of the gate and KEEP it.
2: The creation system needs to be 10 times what CoH is, or else that game will always retain its players simply because they can make the hero/villain they want to look at.
3: Super Travel early on is a bloody must. No body wants to play a "grounded" superman, after all.
Things they can improve on:
1: Deep and long story, the marvel universe AUGHT be conductive for this.
2: Absolutely finished product with massive amounts of content. Lots of place to go, things to do, and innovative foes.
3: Ease in leveling. If that means make levels easy to gain but have more of them, then so be it. Or ditch the whole level thing entirely and use a skill based system. Mission farming in CoH CAN be a pain when it takes a hundred of them to gain a level. More variety in missions and actual non-instanced world flow would be nice too.
I highly doubt they can make a Marvel MMORPG compelling. The biggest draw of the marvel universe is its heroes and you cannot play any of them. A SP RPG can do that. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a great example of a great RPG based on the marvel universe.
Furthermore, MMORPGs are NOT conducive to story driven gameplay. A single player game is more suited for that.
The only upside is that you get to beat up on the marvel villains.
Some worlds are more suited for MMORPGs than others.

Personally, I'm expecting the game to be fairly similar to City of Heroes, and that's not something I particularly mind. However, along with fighting Marvel villains, I'm expecting to see missions where the player characters work together with Marvel heroes. Putting together a team of player heroes to work together with Spider Man and take down the Sinister Six. Teaming up with the Fantastic Four to thwart Dr. Doom's latest evil plot. And so forth.

Playing: Nothing
Played: Champions Online, CoX, STO, PSO, WoW, lots of free-to-play crap
Looking Forward To: DC Universe Online, Blade and Soul
It would be awsome to make both hero and villains to team up for a greater threat like galactus.
Maybe you can't play the heroes itself but that doesn't mean you can't have a specific heroes powers. Maybe have a character that can climb walls like Spiderman, or swim like Aquaman.
God don't let it be similar to CoH.
Of course I say that with little intention of playing it. I would rather play DC online.
Also, who in the world would ever think you could play the ACTUAL characters? Would that be like a first come first serve thing, or would you have Silver Surfer (as dumb as it gets for a superhero btw) spelled like ten-thousand different ways or what?
I guess your gonna get that anyway. I think though unlike CoH if you make a toon that looks like wolverine you wont be reset to Generic 000 012 216 while you aint looking. lol
Right on, right on you pretty much hit it all....
I wanna play Magnus Robot Fighter or X-O ManoWar..Valiant comics for the win ^_~
Yes. Fantastic! Me too buddy. Me too.
I am very skeptical that this Marvel Universe Online can stand out. I am trying to remember how they were going to differentiate themselves from City of X .
Was it the option of having only a set number of players per server and only one player could choose whatever character was available? For example there could be only one Spiderman per server.
So the highlight of City of Heroes / Villians was character customization. If the above scenario was correct, character customization is gone from Marvel Universe. I can understand using skill trees to "tweak' your hero, but what else can you do? Ex: Spiderman "webbing skill tree" perhaps offering options like increased range, root/snare harder to resist, Spider strength, Spider evasion, etc. Outside a temporary skill or A temporary invention (which is ripped from COX anyway) what else can you do to make your Spiderman unique from other Spidermen on other servers?
Worse, you can play any hero. Now the game immersion goes to crap. Hundreds of Hulks, Spidermen scampering across the landscape just doesn't give you a good game environment.
They could possibly try the Age of Conan model where players start with a solo game and jump into the multiplayer world later. For example you can role play Peter Parker before he got bitten by the spider and when the player explores/ unlocks his basic abilities and then once he unlocks the standard set of skills, he unlocks the multiplayer mode.
For those born with powers like Superman, you start out as Superboy, barely aware of your powers and unlock them as you grow.
I do not have much faith in this game unless they come up wtih some innovative ideas.
