It is no secret that MMORPG's didnt get much love since that fate defining 2004 when WOW launched.

Love it or hate it - it shaped the future of MMOs for years to come.

4 years have passed and some people , including me - that do not like WOW are patiently waiting.

Not for MMO that will kill WOW. I do not care. WOW has its own subscriber base, and it certanly appeals to lot of people. Not for MMO that will have larger subscriber base , or will steal WOW subscriber base...no.

I am waiting for a MMO that will be BETTER than WOW - MMO that will do word MMORPG justice!

But for 4 years, all we have seen are meager attempts

GW that was not really MMO, AA that was to niche, DDO that was not really a MMO.Not to count various MMOs that turned out to be simply not functioning as promised....

But the biggest fail of MMOs was VANGUARD

For Vanguard was everything MMO player could wish for: Hugamonguous world , plethora of races and classes , sandboxy gameplay , building ,crafting ,trading ,pvp,  and all this made by the original great minds of MMOs

When Vanguard turned to be just another "failure" - many people here were furious. But i think actually just heart broken. Because their dream was shattered.

But we kept looking to future releases, and hoping

AOC and WAR proved to be the next contendants on "Give me a quality MMO" throne

But they got delayed and delayed... 2007 passed...promise of 2008...delay again

My question is what if AOC and WAR prove to be yet another failed promise ?

All the delays upon delays "for polishing" do not sound good for AOC. Merged classes , ommited features , completely re-done original combat system. It sounds to me that something is very wrong internally. They got good idea but it didnt work well in action.

And what about WAR ? Some people doubt that it will be released in 2008 at all. The videos show very static gameplay , graphic more akin to 2004. And not to forget a game that is leaning towards being just a big WOW BG.

I  HOPE NOT!

But I ask you.

What if AOC and WAR prove to be simply meager games ?

What do we MMO players have to look forward to ?

Another 4 years of waiting ?

Because i do not see any other serious MMO announced before 2012..

All we can do is wait...try the new "flavor of the week/month/year" mmo, and wait some more. I personally will be trying both AoC and WAR... which one will be better? Psh... who knows!

AoC will most definitely be released on may 20. After the last few pushbacks, if they do it again they can say goodbye to MANY people who have been following this game as long as I have. They haven't totally gotten rid of their initial combat, just made tweaks they deemed necessary. Funcom has alot to prove with this game, because to me everything else they have done until now is borderline mediocore. They will have sieges and player/guild cities, but when. My guess is alot they have been preaching on will not even make it to launch still. They better be working hard, because hardly working won't get them anywhere.

As for WAR, this to me already has an advantage because of Mythic being involved in the game. DAoC was a very successful game in its prime, and still holds many subscribers that have held faithful through its life. They have many new concepts surrounding the game....like Public Quests, Realm v. Realm pvp that, in DAoC, was a VERY big success, they also have a great variety of classes. This game will be more based on the cookie-cutter healer, tank, melee dps, caster/ranged dps. If they get it right, it will be to their advantage; just the opposite will entail if they get it wrong.

Many people compare these games graphically, which in my opinion is borderline ridiculous. You cannot compare them because they are based off different graphical schematics. AoC is going for realistic, blood, guts, gore; WAR is going for high-fantasy, colorful, and basing on what their Warhammer series has always been.

Which game will thrive in the end, no one knows for sure right now. I just hope that one of them does, because if not... I don't know what is going to happen in terms of mmos, which to play, which to avoid. Best of luck to both developers. Show us gamers SOMETHING!

My friend... Everyone has been waiting for Darkfall... waiting for Darkfal... waiting for Darkfall,,, and finally waiting for Darkfall. Will this game come out? Will they FINALLY go into beta and show us something? Who the hell knows, but until I hear something a little more concrete then "Darkfall isn't just a game!" I am going to be indulged in WAR and AoC.

Even though it was in quotation marks, you lost me at 'scam'.

I thought that I competely understood everything else you were saying, but that confused me to no end and coloured the rest of the post very strangely for me, along with the term 'hollow promise'. The concern that people may be gravely disappointed is always valid, but do you really think they're being intentionally deceived?

It seems to me that developers are just as frustrated with the situation as players are.

    Mind you.

Many of us do not care about graphic. As long as the game is real good.

I wish the developers would figure that out

That is precisely what I was saying. People need to be a little more lax on the graphics of the mmo and focus on gameplay, because it is gameplay and the community that keep someone in an mmo, not the beautiful river running by the gorgeous trees. If the game plays like shit, and looks like a gem...why play it? It's like watching a shitty movie over and over again because you like a couple of the "outdoor scenes" that are littered throughout it.

Hell, give me a decently graphical game, solid pvp experience, equally solid pve experience, and amazing gameplay and I am sold.

I doubt sincerely that WAR will stray far away from the winning formula (WoW).

    Thats how the business is...

And no, not talking about gfx, Warhammer had the gfx clocked in years and years before something like Warcraft even existed

Earthrise is my new hope :p

But I think WAR has the potential to be very fun, as long as Mythic realises that instances do not make mmorpg's.

We can either live under the (often incorrect) assumption that whatever is going to be released in the future is going to be evolutional and better that what is currently available. Get hyped by filling the development gaps with the perfect setup that only our imagination can create. Get disappointed because there is nothing that can come close to what people are dreaming. Make depressed posts about the state of the gender.

    or

We can enjoy what is available right now (both the good and the bad), remain hopeful that someday something better will come along.

Lets enjoy the good things that are made available to us (realising in the process how much privileged we are compared to others in this world) and lets leave the people that believe that they can develop superior products to actually deliver them in the best state possible. They are the ones taking the big risks, we're just enjoying the fruits of their labour via the small fee that's required.

atm i am back in WoW and having fun

gonna give War a try but its gameplay really doesnt seem to appeal to me that much...mostly the lore

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

I feel exactly the same as the OP, been waiting for a good MMO since 2004, . hell before 2004. in 2004 WoW+EQ2 were both disappointments for me, last good MMO to be released was DAoC.

So its been a long time for me, and havn't played any MMOrpgs longer than a month or 2, in the years since DAoC. But Im hoping that either WAR or AoC will be good enough to satiate my mmorpg addiction.

Does anyone know how to make a mmoRPG anymore?

  • daarcodaarco Member UncommonPosts: 4,276

Fallen Earth, Earthrise Infinity (sci-fi) and Darkfall are the ones im waiting for. But that can very well be four years of waiting to play any of them. Atleast they are all sandbox MMOs.

And if i will try a static level/class MMO.....it will either be TCoS or AoC due to the "new" innovative combat system.  I support any MMO that brings something new to us.

Didn't see anyone mention AION and Stargate Worlds, both which are targeted for this year and next.

Other's previously mentioned include Chronicles of Spellborne, Earthrise, Fallen Earth, Heroes Journey, Darkfall, the new Blizzard secret project, Bioware's secret project and  few I've forgotten.

But its true, other than one or two of the above, most others could quite possibly not come out until 2010. (if ever).

2008 releases : AOC , Jumpgate Evolution (Hope it will be great <- but it is not a REAL classic MMO i was talking about) , AION (could be good, but it is a korean game - bit different mindset)

2008 maybe releases: WAR , TCoS

    .

    .

    .

Darkfall - if you still belive this game will ever be released (and in state better than Dark and Light) then you are probably a person that preordered D&L. And would probably take anything if its written on a some web site as a solid truth.

Earthrise - What do we know ? Nothing much ... Bulgarian company. Riiighhht

Fallen Earth - Possibly discontinued. A great game - My personal candidate for MMO genre saviour. Dont expect it before 2010

Infinity - Sounds great , will it ever be released remains to be seen. Estimated 2011

Bioware, TES Online, Green Monster games ....Estimated 2012

If we should consider that both WAR and AoC fail the answer to your question would pretty much be yes, if not something that has passed unseen should show up. It's not like we can do much except hope.

Might i ask what is all this hype about Darkfall? All i see is lame graphics. Can anyone show me otherwise?

If both AoC and WAR fail i will hang myself, and after that im gonna shoot myself, and after that i am going to wait for WoW 2

Aion shows some serious, serious progress.  Asian MMOs have traditionally been grindfests, but there's no question that they've been ahead of American MMOs in many respects (depth of skill, interesting mechanics, graphical theme - not just graphics, but the ability to integrate them into a worldwide theme).

Aion could be the next big thing.  As I keep reminding people, its from the only company that can stand its MMOs next to WoW, and say "we have a population that you have to respect."  Like it or not, if you aren't keeping an eye on Aion, you will get blindsided.

Also, admit it everyone, you REALLY want to see what Blizzard does with its next MMO.  Swear eternal hatred all you want, the budget on it has to be in the hundreds of millions.  Half a Billion?  Doesn't seem ridiculous for Blizzard.  You may have sworn eternal hatred on everything blizzard does for the rest of time, but if you're not curious what they do with that sort of money, you're not human.

Shara, I totally agree with you. People can sit here and curse Blizzard to death...but when they release anything on their new project, they are going to be glued to the computer screen like the rest of us.

Also, I think Aion looks very good as well. A little too Korean for my liking, but either way what I have seen of the game looks beautiful. I am definitely going to have to give it a shot when it comes out.

I was waiting for WAR and AoC, I just picked up PotBS on a whim, and I love it.  In fact I may just pass on WAR and AoC now.

For those of you passing on PotBS because of negative comments from this forum (like I almost did), if you like strategy – give the game a try.  Don’t listen to the people on this forum, except for me that is.

How many people say they are not looking for a WoW clone but won’t try something different like PotBS?
