18 Certificate/MatureRating = Thousands of Kids playing AOC Agree or disagree ?

summitussummitus Member UncommonPosts: 1,414

Just a thought I was thinking earlier today, normally when a game has a Mature rating or an 18 certificate it always seems that more kids will bend over backwards to make sure they get to play it, Grand Theft Auto or Manhunt being perfect examples of this ,

So my question is to you guys, is this going to be an issue  with AOC , and any youngsters reading this, are you going to play it ?

Also any Mmorpg.com members with children, will you be allowing your kids to play it ?

Ok fine if you dont care , but are you a parent ?

Also its not a question about people being annoying in Mmo's its about Children or Teens playing a game that is clearly aimed at a mature audience.

Like jusom said, there will always be the "immature" population in any game we play. We just need to learn to ignore these people, group with others like us, and it adds to the overall quality of the game. I know many people complained in WoW about the "kiddies" when all I did was ignore them and I was fine.

i think it all depends on what parents they have. they mabe don't want to use their creditcard or whatever to let thier kids play the game, some parents will look at the game and see that it got a mature rating. but then there also parents who give them all they ask for. but there wil probably be timecards for AoC too, and that would be easier for the kids to get around the subscription that need a creditcard. that would probably be the main issue.

and if i got kids they would at least be 16-17 for me to let them play.

Ok  but I think your both missing my point here. Immature or irritating people in Mmo's are not neccasarily Children or Teens, and WOW is not an 18 certifacte or Mature rated game.

I think AOC is quite unique as it is the first big profile Mmo to be aimed at Adults only. My question is should kids or teens play it , ok I know no matter what happens they will play it and even if their parents try to stop them they will usually find a way to get round the problem but as responsible Adult gamers should we do more to make sure our youngsters are not subjected to Adult material in games ?

Well my main thing about 17+/18+ games is the fact that kids are immature. The violence part becomes an issue when the person is to immature or doesn't have a fully functional mindset to separate the game world and the real world. If a person can not separate those two things then they shouldn't partake in movies, tv shows, games or anything to that nature. If a parents child can not separate those things then the parent should do his/her job and keep the child from partaking in those things. The age restrictions will cause more people to desire the game such as age limits on alcohol and driving and what not. People want what they can not have, it's a part of human nature. It is up to parents to control the child and decide wither or not the child should play it. Parents now days seem very irresponsible in terms of modesty and controlling children. You can walk around the local mall and see exactly what I'm talking about. 7yo girls with cell phones, mini skirts and tube tops is ridiculous  and shows the level of morals and control imho. Kids will have this game just as easily as people who meet the age requirement there will be no question of that.

Really good points you raise there and I think a sensible approach if you believe your 16/17 year old is sensible and mature enough to take part in a game like AOC . But I suppose the question is where do we draw the line ?

A game like AOC may generate a little contoversy with " Ban all Video Games" brigade Though.

the age 13-16 group is always around a lot in most cases, unless its a MMO with a challenge.

But I am positive in AoC the 13-16 age group is going to be really really really really bad.....

But personally I'de rather play with a 13 year old then a 16 year old....high school kids are the worst

    I play all ghame

Yes I think I can relate to that ! Most of the foul language it chat channels probably comes from the older teens, though I come across some pretty bad 13 year olds in my business !

Just hope we dont soon have kid's Running round shopping malls soon with Great Sword's and Axes chopping people up !

Hey Summ, usually the kiddies don't have the best computers because they play on mom's and dad's. SO let's just hope that if they do make it to the mall, which by all means they will, they will lag so much trying to hit people that the PK rent-a-cops inside the mall take advantage of their lag and kill them first:)

From looking at the AoC fourms I would say the average player is a ADD ridden Ten  year old....honestly I haven't seen so many people that couldn't spell "you" or "Are" Since the last BLizcon.

Not sure where anyone thinks that there's content in AOC that's really objectionable.  My son's 15 and if you don't think he isn't already well versed in the concepts AOC has incorporated (mild nudity, implied sex, violent, graphic death) you're mistaken.  Maybe somewhere there are still children who haven't been bombarded with most of this stuff since they were about 12, but with regards to mine, that's never been the case. (the girls were the worst)

My son has played MMO's since he was eight, and I'd like to think I've raised him in the correct behavior when he's on-line. I'm sure he's slipped up on occasion, but hey, so have I as well and acted like an arse.

My son has been exposed to far more sexual content listening to his adult guild mates describe in detail the sexual activities they pretended to do to each other. (until they realized his age and that he was listening).

In the end, I'm not concerned about the game itself, nor even the players warping his sense of values. I've raise him correctly to fear God and me, and he's either not doing much wrong or has learned quite well how to keep me from finding out about it. (the more likely option)

Unlike about 60% of the MMORPG player population I'm not afraid of children in my games. If I'm aware of them I behave appropriately, have no issue moderating my behavior, and when they start to get really out of hand, they get put on ignore.

Will AOC be free of children? Of course not.  Will it have more than other games. I doubt it.  Hey, if children really scare you, come play EVE, I've yet to meet more than a few older teens and they handle themselves quite well.

I'm actually more worried about the people playing who worry about the kids playing.  Anyway we can keep them out?

If you are a parent I suggest you parent.  If you can't be a parent to your children, then AOC is not gonna matter because there are worse things your kids are into than videogames.

  • airstrikeairstrike Member UncommonPosts: 373

Tbh any game with a 18 rating will atract kids, but the funny thing is all games rated 18 are way more explicit then what kids see in movies and even cartoons, take the news for exemple (I am guessing that it's the same in each country) : murder, murder, suicide, suicide, failed suicide, suicide and someone found a coin on the street.

And ofcourse all the big fat retarded politicians (points finger at USA,and runs off and hides) will try to ban games with +18 ratings cause kids will be messed up once they played it... well wake up,USA is the most fucked up country ,youth wise ...

In my opinion, it has more to do with violence than any type of nudity.  Age of Conan is pushing the envelope in both cases.  Any parent who is more worried with the nudity than the fact you can literally lop off human heads has their priorities in the wrong order.  That being said, its really up to the parent to judge how mature their kid is.  I've been playing computer games as long as I can remember (I'm 18 and I remember playing Quest for Glory when I was 3).  I've never had any real limit imposed on me, but I've always been mature beyond my years.

Between AOC and WAR I forsee both having a WOW/Guildwars type crowd (In terms of overall maturety).

Both games are very commercial and will draw the annoyances of a mainstream crowd.

AOC especially with it's marketing of sexual situations will draw some annoying types I'm sure.

All MMO's will have many stupid people on them, because most people suck.

Fallen Earth the MMO I am looking forward to most seems to be drawing a more mature crowd so far. Lets hope this jem stays it's course.

I’m still undecided if the developers decision to have a mature rating for the game is just a cynical marketing attempt at making the game more appealing for certain people by adding boobies and blood.

Or if the game will genuinely be more sophisticated and challenging because its designed for a mature target audience.

Thats a very interesting thought not one I'd taken into account , it could possibly be true as contoversy does seem to sell games by the bucket load, on the other hand it could be an honest atempt to bring a genuine Adult orientated game to the market ..... mmmmm I wonder ..

  • ShamiusShamius Member Posts: 99

To me, it is very lore-centric! They stuck with the "brutal and bloody" world of Robert E. Howard, and in order to do this, needed to make a Mature rated game. Will this hurt/benefit them? I would say it will do neither. If people want to play a game, whether the be 14 or 40, they are going to find a way to get it.

Good point Klob, I think Funcom really do want to bring Conans Brutal world to life, tho I think in doing so It will innadvertantly benefit them, I really do think this game is going to sell by the Bucket  loads !

  • ShamiusShamius Member Posts: 99

I do agree that they will sell alot of games right away, but in my opinion that is all that is going to happen. This isn't going to be a game that people wait for 5 months and then buy it, because it doesn't seem to have that "impact" with the general mmo community. I have a feeling many will play it, some will love it, and many others will walk away after 3 months with a bad taste in their mouth.

Ok, let me start off by saying that im 15...

Now. I am pretty interested in getting AoC, and being 15 seriously wont stop me - I do have many contacts through whom I can easily get the game...

Now im not saying "What u gonna do bout it?" or "so what if im young" or anything like that...

My parents wouldn't agree to buy me an M rated game that has "Due to Nudity and bla bla" written on it. Ever. But my dad wont mind me using his CC whenever I want.

Now what Im saying is, there STILL will be kids that will play the game, however id like to point out that MANY of them wont be immature... When I used to play WoW or other MMO's, people thought I was over 18 because thats the way I behaved. I wouldn't do the typical "OMFG U GOT MY EPIC" or "OMFG THIS SUCKS *log out*" shit...

I myself HATE the typical kids, but I wouldn't mind more people like myself in a game.
