I do agree that they will sell alot of games right away, but in my opinion that is all that is going to happen. This isn't going to be a game that people wait for 5 months and then buy it, because it doesn't seem to have that "impact" with the general mmo community. I have a feeling many will play it, some will love it, and many others will walk away after 3 months with a bad taste in their mouth.
And..... there are those that think it could well be the next really big Mmo ........ WOW killer maybe ?
Just a thought I was thinking earlier today, normally when a game has a Mature rating or an 18 certificate it always seems that more kids will bend over backwards to make sure they get to play it, Grand Theft Auto or Manhunt being perfect examples of this , So my question is to you guys, is this going to be an issue with AOC , and any youngsters reading this, are you going to play it ? Also any Mmorpg.com members with children, will you be allowing your kids to play it ?
Maybe. I doubt it really matters. Sad fact is, that the biggest part of the immature crowd in MMO's are perfectly allowed to buy AoC without the permission of their parents as, in reality, they're quite a bit older then they present themselves to be in MMO's. Sadly.
If MMO's taught us anything is that age doesn't equal maturity.

Sadly, thanks to the 18+ ratings there will be atleast 50% less players than WoW...
Why?
Because 50% of WoW's population is 7-13 year olds.
I'm actually more worried about the people playing who worry about the kids playing. Anyway we can keep them out?
If you are a parent I suggest you parent. If you can't be a parent to your children, then AOC is not gonna matter because there are worse things your kids are into than videogames.
Exactly.
People who equate real life violence to media/video games are the same idiots I can't stand. Anyone who can't tell the difference between GTA and real life is honestly going to have serious problem with life no matter what you do about games...
Was hitler playing too much Manhunt? GTA? Seriously ... people have been fighting wars since people existed... There has and always will be just generally violent people, and games aren't making people any more or less violent. They're entertainment and that's it.
And if parents have a problem with the games and think they're "too violent" or "too graphic" or whatever the hell they think... obviously if they think their kid cant handle it and is gonna start shooting up their school... here's a hint... don't let them play!!! Obviously if they cant do that they aren't watching their kids very carefully and aren't very good parents and are just looking for someone or something else to point the finger at. If their kids cant tell the difference between reality and a game anyway they still have some serious parenting to do.
The only reason I care if there are kids would be because they can be annoying... but since that comes in any game. (especially WoW) what can u do... Personally i'm already in an 18+ AoC guild.
Ok, let me start off by saying that im 15... Now. I am pretty interested in getting AoC, and being 15 seriously wont stop me - I do have many contacts through whom I can easily get the game... Now im not saying "What u gonna do bout it?" or "so what if im young" or anything like that... My parents wouldn't agree to buy me an M rated game that has "Due to Nudity and bla bla" written on it. Ever. But my dad wont mind me using his CC whenever I want.
Now what Im saying is, there STILL will be kids that will play the game, however id like to point out that MANY of them wont be immature... When I used to play WoW or other MMO's, people thought I was over 18 because thats the way I behaved. I wouldn't do the typical "OMFG U GOT MY EPIC" or "OMFG THIS SUCKS *log out*" shit... I myself HATE the typical kids, but I wouldn't mind more people like myself in a game.
So what are your views on MY post?
Hi Mald .. well first of if your determined your gonna play the game well of course nobody can stop you as you so eloquently put it and its interesting what you say about typical kids ( how typical you are tho we only have your post to go by ) and you seem to write quite a mature sounding post.......
However what does worry me is that your prepared to decieve your Parents, by playing a game that they would forbid you to play. and would Dad let you use his credit card if he knew it was for a M Rated Game ?.
SO you may have a mature attidude towards Violence Blood/gore Nudity in Video games or movies ... but your disregard for your parents wishes and using your Dad Credit Card for something he would dissaprove of is not very mature. Yeah and I know all kids do it at some stage but that does'nt make it right now does it .
It's a crock of crap, all it is, is a marketing strategy. "Hey we have boobs, cursing, etc., you can't play unless your 18+" but you know there will be kids playing the game because basically some parents really don't give a crap, whatever keeps little Timmy out of their hair, they will let them do anything they want.

Ok maybe its a marketing strategy, but maybe Funcom are just trying to bring the Conan world to life for a mature audience, which takes us back to my original question marketing or otherwise, is it right for our children to play it ? And yeah the fact that alot of parents dont give a crap about it is why as another poster pointet out ...wait till Fox News or Cnn or the BBC get hold of the game.
There are a few responses that worry me in this thread too.

I'm not gonna disagree completely, but I do think there's more to it than that.
By trying to stay as close to Howard's original lore, FC -had- to go for a higher rating. If they had wanted to get a rating of PG-13 or something, they'd have to seriously alter the lore and the general feel of the world that Howard originally created.
So I don't think it's just a media-stint.
On to the actual topic. Yeah, it will attract lots of younger people. The "forbidden fruit" theme fits nicely here. However, as it was said already, it's the parents job to raise their kids, not FC's. I'm sure they will be providing (legally) sufficient ways to enact the age-restriction (which will of course not keep youngsters to get it anyway).

Sorry about the misconception, my DAD doesn't mind and he knows I play such games (Used to play GTA around him, when i was like 12... he didnt mind much)
But Im not really decieving my mom cuz the only reason she will NEVER want me to play an M rated game is for the nudity etc, because... ofc what parent wants his/her son to watch porn? This is pretty much the same thing but I know that im not gonna play the game for OOO BOOBIES but more for the gameplay etc...
Other than that, yes I get your point.... And my dad has himself given me his CC details etc cuz I earned in trust in several ways... so hes fine with it

Ugh, read post above
And now, not much can stop it i'll agree.... but the parents are at fault to some extent, I use the same ethics and values ive learned when talking on the internet or forums or an MMO etc.
Let me also add: Have u played LOTRO? If not, give it a try.... JUST for its community, its the best community ive ever seen in a game. Never heard the word "Noob" for like 3 months in there.
The game will have slightly less younger folks and that is about it. Kids will still get in because of loser parents but hey - less is less and that's nice. I honestly don't think it will lead to more as some have said. Trust me - there is a lot more places to see stuff more graphic than this on the web. And for free. Most kids aren't going to shell out $15 a month to see the cartoon crap when they can see the real thing for free at any time.
My only questions is, why go through the trouble of trying to stop it? Nothing works, so give up, let them play. Go on a RP server, they are usually more mature and have more strict naming conventions. If you are still worried about "kiddies" and "L337 speak" then maybe you need to pick up Oblivion again, or find another single player game where everything is roses...

First: This is not aimed at the poster in this thread. This is a general feeling I have.
I think, that parents are the only ones who can actually do something about that. It starts with the entire upbringing of the child. If the child respects his/her parents, it will respect their wishes, but of course, that implies the parents respect the child as well. It's a dialogue kind of thing. Personally, I think that parents should know and care enough for their children to be able to judge by themselves if a kid can actually play such a game without being influenced the wrong way. I've known 13yeard olds who are more mature than 30 year olds and vice versa.

So Mald now your saying that your Dad wont mind you playing Conan with his credit card even tho they dont want you to play M Rated stuff ?
Also, im a MEGA conan fan... i've been watching Conan cartoons etc since I was a kid, so thats the main reason im in for it. And also the gameplay etc looks nice..
Oh yeah... and if I tell my parents its a game based on the conan lore, and has mature content etc the reply would most likely be "....okay" but thats mainly because, like I said before, my parents know im mature enough / ive earned my trust.

I said it wrong... my dad wont mind, and if I explain to my mom she might say yes too... ugh im causing a lot of confusion, read the post above this one by me, might explain some...

Well Mald all I can say is if your really so into Conan ( like me too ) I hope when it does come out and you play that you discuss it with you Mum and Dad, you sound kinda a cool kid so I'm sure with their approval it'll be cool, sadly tho not all kids are as well balanced as you seem to be and I supose its this that causes the controversy in the Media .about video games etc.
As alot of poster's have pointed out on this subject nobody knows their kids better than their own parents, and if they are cool with their son/daughter playing games like Conan well thats half the battle.
What worries me tho is the kid who's alone in his own world and who's parents dont know what he/she is playing / watching etc.
I thought I would add my opinion to the mix. I am a father of two boys, and an avid gamer. I personally believe that the rating system itself does not work. It is entirely up to the parent to decide whether a game is appropriate for their children. I personally would allow my sons to play... they are mature enough IMHO to deal with the violence aspects and understand that it is a game and that this behavior in a RL setting is not right. As for the nudity, I do not believe children need to be sheltered from nudity if it is just breasts etc. Pornography objectifies the human body and I would not allow them to watch it. However my children are not told to cover their eyes when a woman walks nude in a movie or anything like that. I have taught them to appreciate the human body for what it is. My children are 11 and 12. Both of which have been taught about the human body and nudity. I find it diffult to understand why violence is more accepted than nudity when the human body is a beautiful thing. This all comes down to the individual as all children are different... if a child is mature enough and understands what they are playing then it isn't such a big deal, however it falls to a parent to pay attention to these things and to monitor their children. My childrens gaming is monitored, and I personally ensure that they are associating with good people and that they are not put in a harmful situation. It does not matter the games rating as these situation can exist in all games.
In short, it is a parents responsibility to ensure that the children are protected from what may be considered "bad" things. And it is also a parents responsibilty to determine what is and is not appropriate for their children.
Kids will always figure out a way to get around the mature rating. It really depends upon the parents and if they want their child to play this type of game. As far at kids go if they can handle themselves in a mature manner it really doesn't bother me that much. But that is why we also have ignore in mmo's.

in my experience with MMO's i worry more for the older people who have 12+hours a day playing rather then kids who dont get as much time to play,,with kids having school an whatever else, but having say a full grown man who doesnt have a job who can play 24/7 i think the full grown man could possibly be more effected by a game such as conan then the younger child who gets maybe but 2 hours a day after school.. now everyone handles everythin different no one is the same but most kids i have met on these games do not take them as serious as the older crowd able to play more , the kids really look at it more as a game tryin to get just whatever play time in that they can, rather then someone who puts in 12 + hours a day who might look at it more as a lifestyle..people who say that conan might be to graphic for a 13 year old well maybe it is maybe it isnt i will leave that up to the parents to decide..hopefuly they take a moment to look at what they are gettin they're child..again everyone takes in what they see different but any kid who watches tv has seen an heard worse .
now anyone active in the Saryrn server community on Everquest knows what happen just last year in jan. with the murders that happen from a 26 year old man who killed his brother an his brothers friend who both played Everquest as well ..i remeber readin an article about the killings how they looked into everquest might having somethin to do with this man doing what he did..he did not work he had nothin but free time to play .. hours an hours of play time for each of his charcters i believe over a years worth for each i really cant remeber but it was alot.now do i think everquest had somethin to do with him killing his brother an friend? i really cant say but it made me really look into how much time i spend on MMO's because maybe it did as i said before everyone is affected differently

Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?

First: This is not aimed at the poster in this thread. This is a general feeling I have.I think, that parents are the only ones who can actually do something about that.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Sorry about the misconception, my DAD doesn't mind and he knows I play such games (Used to play GTA around him, when i was like 12... he didnt mind much)
But Im not really decieving my mom cuz the only reason she will NEVER want me to play an M rated game is for the nudity etc, because... ofc what parent wants his/her son to watch porn? This is pretty much the same thing but I know that im not gonna play the game for OOO BOOBIES but more for the gameplay etc...
Other than that, yes I get your point.... And my dad has himself given me his CC details etc cuz I earned in trust in several ways... so hes fine with it
So Mald now your saying that your Dad wont mind you playing Conan with his credit card even tho they dont want you to play M Rated stuff ?
Also, im a MEGA conan fan... i've been watching Conan cartoons etc since I was a kid, so thats the main reason im in for it. And also the gameplay etc looks nice..
Oh yeah... and if I tell my parents its a game based on the conan lore, and has mature content etc the reply would most likely be "....okay" but thats mainly because, like I said before, my parents know im mature enough / ive earned my trust.
I said it wrong... my dad wont mind, and if I explain to my mom she might say yes too... ugh im causing a lot of confusion, read the post above this one by me, might explain some...
As alot of poster's have pointed out on this subject nobody knows their kids better than their own parents, and if they are cool with their son/daughter playing games like Conan well thats half the battle.
What worries me tho is the kid who's alone in his own world and who's parents dont know what he/she is playing / watching etc.
Good Day,
I thought I would add my opinion to the mix.
My 2 cents

Kids will always figure out a way to get around the mature rating. It really depends upon the parents and if they want their child to play this type of game. As far at kids go if they can handle themselves in a mature manner it really doesn't bother me that much. But that is why we also have ignore in mmo's.
And what an excellent 2 cents if I may say so !
in my experience with MMO's i worry more for the older people who have 12+hours a day playing rather then kids who dont get as much time to play,,with kids having school an whatever else, but having say a full grown man who doesnt have a job who can play 24/7 i think the full grown man could possibly be more effected by a game such as conan then the younger child who gets maybe but 2 hours a day after school.. now everyone handles everythin different no one is the same but most kids i have met on these games do not take them as serious as the older crowd able to play more , the kids really look at it more as a game tryin to get just whatever play time in that they can, rather then someone who puts in 12 + hours a day who might look at it more as a lifestyle..people who say that conan might be to graphic for a 13 year old well maybe it is maybe it isnt i will leave that up to the parents to decide..hopefuly they take a moment to look at what they are gettin they're child..again everyone takes in what they see different but any kid who watches tv has seen an heard worse .
now anyone active in the Saryrn server community on Everquest knows what happen just last year in jan. with the murders that happen from a 26 year old man who killed his brother an his brothers friend who both played Everquest as well ..i remeber readin an article about the killings how they looked into everquest might having somethin to do with this man doing what he did..he did not work he had nothin but free time to play .. hours an hours of play time for each of his charcters i believe over a years worth for each i really cant remeber but it was alot.now do i think everquest had somethin to do with him killing his brother an friend? i really cant say but it made me really look into how much time i spend on MMO's because maybe it did as i said before everyone is affected differently
