Eve on water?

0_o From screen shots this game looks like it could be a niche hit. I could see it drawing in 50k subscribers or so atleast, if its done right. Can't wait to see more!

Well i like EVE, but its not everyone cup of tea. I think the logged in user count for EVE has only reached 10,000 or so.
But if this game has anywhere near as much depth as EVE i'll have to seriously consider taking a look.

I sincerely hope the devs understand that IF they make a game that caters to the hardcore (aka Eve), the game will not be very successful. Ive played a ton of Uncharted Waters and SeaDogs, and having an mmrpg version of a sailing game is a dream. However I will never play it if becomes anything like Eve. Im not advocating making the game carebear by any means. PvP is a lot of fun. But there are right ways of making PvP (DAoC), and wrong ways of making PvP (Eve).

    Played: AC1, DAoC, E&B, SWG
Tested: AC1, AC2, DAoC, Eve, Planetside, Rubies, Lineage 2, MU Online

i haven't played Eve... but i still hope it's not like Eve.   what would be the point in that?

i hope the game steals ... errrr.... pirates the gold from the best games, and stands tall above all others.

I also have very high anticipation for this title as a MMO. As I have played literally 75% of any MMO ever made, I know what I like, what I can play for a while, and what gets boring right away. If this title turns out to be like Eve, it will not be successful, the only draw in of Eve was the graphics and the depth of the game. I think PvP should be a huge aspect of the game, also fighting the navy and such if you are a pirate. PvP needs to be done right, however, games like DAoC and such had horrible PvP, playing Ultima Online for 3 years the biggest draw in, AND addiction was the PvP, PvP needs to be open ended and stratigical, not just click, attack, click moves, see who wins, and of course if they are higher level, they will always win. In games like UO and Shadowbane PvP had a stratigcal aspect to them, where it was more your skill and knowledge instead of level.

    I play all ghame

Well for 1 there are no warp engines lol. Combat will be a slow and stragetic process in this game.....it will take actual skill....so im not worried about pvp. It will be a ninche hit for sure for sailing buffs and historical types.(including me).

no the Devs has allready mentioned this in a interview .

they are looking at the pvp systems and have concluded that they want something that is fairly similar to DAoC and its controlled by what kind of political state the diffrent countries are in .for example one month england is at war with spain then its okay to attack eachother . but pirates will be lawless and have no country they work under. that means it will be rather hard to play as one .

    - Actually, your wrong pirrg - En1gma

This is 10,000 users who were logged in AT THE SAME TIME!!! So Eve has lots more players. I think Eve-Online is one , if not THE mmo with the most members!!

P.S. The trial accounts for Eve are only ~250

    Hi Xionor,

You are right that Eve-Online has (probably) more than 10,000 users. From "An Analysis of MMOG subscription growth", you can see that Eve-Online has about 30,000 users in the end of 2003. But with this amount it is defenitely not the MMO game with the most members. That is probably Final Fantasy XI, or Everquest.

But for Pirates of the Burning Sea, I don't think that they are going to be the biggest MMO game in the world. With a game of Pirates of the Burning Sea, I think you will not find so many players interested. I am not sure what amount of members they are aiming for, but I think they will be happy with 50,000 users. For my taste, the best game doesn't need to have the highest amount of members. So Pirates of the Burning Sea can still be the best MMOG in 2005.... I hope so image

It's not the quantity that matters. If a game has the biggest amount of players it doesn't mean it's the best game ever. It's the quality that matters. I rather see 400 truely dedicated players than 40,000 with 90% lousy players, not taking the game seriously.

It's true that this theme isn't a big attraction to everyone. Not all gamers like "sailing ships". But I do believe it has its charm: players that truely like this theme and adore "Men-of-War", ships of the line.

Btw, the skills system will be different than that of EVE. PvP battle would need real skill, as pointed out above, not only character skills and firepower.

PoTBS will be released over stages, named R1, R2 etc.

R1, the release version, will focus on the core game: sailing, combat and trading. I hope they get the trading system as good and deep as in EVE. In EVE I also like the corps management...could be something similar to players in PoTBS to found trade companies.

With PotBS a dream seems to come true: a mmorpg sailing ship & pirates game! Yeah!

It would be my dream! if this game were anything like EVE. EVE does pvp better then just about any online game available, it has the deepest trading and player based economy and most involved market system available in gaming today.

EVE has excellent pvp, excellent crafting and trading and a great community.  It could do PVE better and plans to with the SHIVA release.

I hope Pirates studies the heck out of EVE and improves on it...Sailing the high seas (Master and Commander style) with the historical accuracy of Pirates and the complexity of EVE would be a dream!

I have strong hopes for this game!

Isn't Lineage the biggest MMORPG (userbase wise) ? :)

All I have to say is: Skill-based character development.  I'll be playing.

Eve was cool but space is boring.  Now if they make a game where you do things inside the spaceship and do ground missions (Star Trek like), then I would try that game.

PBS looks like it will have numerous of the things that make Eve a good game but I think overall it will be better than Eve.  Looking forward to it.

I just hope they will "tune" the skill training a bit, you should only be able to train skills when you are online, i think its one of the few flaws in EvE that a newbie has no chance to gain on "oldtimers", a player shouldnt be punished cause he started 6 months later then someone else, (s)he should have a fair chance to gain on the old players.  But I will for sure give this game a try, loved the old Pirates games :)

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. The only thing you can gain faster is your standing or your bank account. I would like to have that when I intensively practice something I will get more experience and so more skill. That's what, so far I've read, the Devs of PotBS are planning to use.

I don't think we have to worry about PVP turning into a grief fest, just can't imagine this game will draw those types of people. Could be wrong, but thats my gut feeling on this one.

The game looks fantastic! As long as they keep up with the releases, I think this game will go far.

    It's a lose lose situation.

If they cater to powergamers: All the casual players get screwed over and tend to have a hard time in game
If they cater to casual gamers: The powergamers excel too fast too quickly which ultimately leads to some incredibly bad nerfi...I mean balancing.

Best thing for the PotBS developers is to design the game however they want...truly though regardless of how it plays out I think what will make or break this game is their PvP implementation. From what I've read of the dev logs it sounds pretty solid but I have yet to see it in action.

I don't imagine you'll be able to warp or jump into a gank fest in this Pirates game. Also the lack of randomness in warp scrambling in EVE will not be there because from what I've read, you have to shoot someones mast and you may not fully wreck it and one can repair the mast as they go and such. So I don't think it will be as much of a gankfest.

Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro

Hopefully this will not be EVE at all.

I want a decent option to trade, smuggle, pirate, bounty hunt, join the navy.

Combat will require skill and tactics.

It won't be a gank fest for a few reasons.

One of the main one's is that some one has the biggest war ship on the planet guess what it needs deeper water, more wind and is slower so a lighter more agile ship can escape. There will be no situation as with eve I have the ship that is best at everything in the game ie Battleship( or have they released Titans yet).

The bummer is if said warship is escorting cargo ships and your the pirate you are gonna have to take some risks.

Plus I just cannot see this game attracting the l337 kiddies.

FYI Eve has 50K individual accounts...but thats by the by. And EVE's PvP works very well.

Pirates of the Burning Sea looks great, the idea is great, and there will I hope be player pirates and pirate hunters.

No way will this game be EVE on water, there are two totally separate ideas.

The thing i want in this game, is a good PvP, Good Weapons for ship, Good Armor Upgrades, Be able to get off the boat and go in towns, be able to hire people to work at your ship, be able to view what's the crew doing in the ship, be able to create your own settlements, be able to work in mines and other stuff to earn money, and other features.....

P.S. if they add any "advance" weapons (laser cannon), i think it will ruin the game.

lol, if this game is lucky, it would be compared to EVE.

however, these are two totally different mmorpgs.

Kudos to a company ran by 7 guys to put out a great product like EVE and I hope Pirates will be as good and I'm sure it will be image
