Very cute how you put that in quotes as to denote some sort of negative connotation to it. Oh, hey, quick question while you're reading this, what does the RPG part of MMORPG stand for again?
What' s cool about permadeathing in DDO, you can always just have one character doing it if you want...and play your other ones normally. It completely plays like a different game, so it's a great change of pace. Highly recommend it, at least giving it a try!
Holy crap this sounds so cool. I so badly miss DDO but every time i re-subscribe I end up getting bored because I've done it all before and/or can't find a group. I really want to try this. How big is your guild and how many are logged on on an average night? And what server do you play on?
O man, if I know you ppl 2 years ago. I was bored after a months dungeon running. Mostly meet ppl rushed to complete quest while I like dungeon crawling, enjoy the excitement n surprise trap sprang on you.
Permadeath is not new, but its not well known in MMO imo.
Think of getting the DDO back n meet you guys.
Yeah, I try to tell everyone who's going to grab the DDO trial to make sure you tell people you're new! There's a ton of alts in the game, and people running their 3rd or 4th low level character tend to rush right through quests, killing the enjoyment of a first timer. That said, 99% of the time they WILL slow down when asked, because like me, it's a blast to watch someone's reactions the first time they experience DDO's quests
Nothing like letting them turn a corner and come face to face with a beholder the first time LOL!
p.s. Have you been back since the server merges tarkin? Grouping is WAY easier now, you can pretty much get a group in 5 minutes flat for any level.
Honestly im waiting for an mmo with permadeath and full pvp everywhere with full looting of the body money, gear that your wearing and all items in your inventory. That would be amazing.

I would very much like to try that. It sounds very very intense and I want more intensity from my "Virtual World" simulators, there will always be enough casual games to go vacationing after you die and want to take a short break before starting a new adventure.
Permadeath doesnt work in most games [they are not built for it]. But from what i have seen it looks to be a good idea in DDO. I wish you all luck in it.
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981
Now thats just straight up weird .... DDO IS NOT A PERMADEATH GAME, dont play it as one.
I agree. Other people should only play games how I tell them to play; creativity is scary and I don't like being scared.
[edit] le sigh
I don't see the idea of perma-death being creative. It is certainly not new and not an unknown. It is certainly not popular for obvious reasons and that does not make it creative.
I would say it is a niche preference. Nothing more, nothing less.
I've some rather terrible news for you. Being completely new is not a requirement for creativity. True story. Most art uses old styles, ALL music is a twist on progressions that have been used since the dawn of sound. Creativity is not the "imagining of un-imagined things". It includes those, but is not limited to them.
Creativity : the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, interpretations, etc.; originality, progressiveness, or imagination
So simply being able to do something beyond the traditional rules and patterns DOES equal being creative. I'd say that playing Permadeath in a game which actually has NONE is fairly creative BY DEFINITION.
It helps to actually look up the words you are trying to define.
In that case, you better be precise because perma-death is certainly NOT a) new, b) original or c) imaginative.
It is merely non-"traditional" because it is not popular.
You know, if I was one of the DDO devs reading this I would think very hard about allowing the player to set a permadeath flag on their character so that it would automatically delete when it died.....
Just that one feature would probably be enough to get DDO some more subscribers and set it a world apart from other MMOS.
Yah know, I've playe dthis game since launch. i've taken a few months break here and there as I get tired of running the same content. i am very active on Argonessen, and formerly Mabar. I;m in Semper Fi and Night Wolves. I've done pretty much all the game has to offer and still enjoy it. never had the balls for this though. lol I'd love to, but all character slots on Argo are full. I will start an alt on thelanis though just for this. I like the challenge, especially for us "vets" or "experts". With the new solo rules this should be a lot more manageable too. No twinking though... man... lol See you soon.

LOL! I know what you mean Fee, I had played for about a year before I tried my first perma-death character, mostly out of fear really! I gotta tell ya man, it's a whole new game. NO ONE dares to zerg, and you get that whole heart in your throat every time things get tight...which is a lot LOL!
i must say i am reinstaling DDO as we speak, or type, just because if this post. of course my conection sucks so lets see how the updating and free trial go before i make my grand re-entrance hehe.
the missing link in a chain of destruction.
All spelling and typographical errors are based soely on the fact that i just dont care. If you must point out my lack of atention to detail, please do it with a smile.
Def an accomplishment. Its a big deal to put this kind of thing in MMOs for developers, MANY MANY people are against it, and it really could break a game from all the obvious frustration!
That's great Bill, I like most others are contemplating re-subbing to DDO just to try it out. I'm also a huge fan of PnP D&D and rolling your characters was half of the fun

If you want to be ridiculous is it your perogative. Associating the word permadeath and MMO is just a true absurdity. The idea is to develop your character not constantly kill it off.
Perhaps you would find a better place in FPS's
Personally, if I were the developer, I would ban your guild, all you are doing is filling up the names database, typical of people who only think of themselves.

Either you are a troll, 12, or just flat out ignorant. Actually, I'm going with all of the above.

You clearly spend more time dying than you should. This would probably be a reflection on either your complete lack of patience or skill. I know people who have leveled close to the cap in perma death DDO...yep, they never died once. So, when you make this statement...
The idea is to develop your character not constantly kill it off.
I would say the idea is to develop your character by keeping it alive.
Try incorporating some actual style and skill into your game play and stop being a zerging mmo'er with zero skill.

lol.. this guy should get an award
I bet its hard to find something negative all the time.
btw, they delete their characters.. its not filling up any names database. then again, without that additional statement you wouldnt really have any arguement to feel how you do

I'm all for perma-death and I think we need more MMORPGs with it.
Serious death penalties makes every close call an adrenaline rush, and every minor achievement a major victory. This alternative rule-set should be in all MMORPGs.
Holy crap this sounds so cool. I so badly miss DDO but every time i re-subscribe I end up getting bored because I've done it all before and/or can't find a group. I really want to try this. How big is your guild and how many are logged on on an average night? And what server do you play on?
The Sublime and Mortal Voyage are just like normal guilds, log-in anytime and get a group going with whoever else is on, it does slow down a bit when a new mod comes out. Other guilds have set guild nights but you can find members popping in randomly during the week as well.
I can't speak for other guilds on averages as I mostly play with The Sublime, but we usually have 2-3 groups going Friday and Saturday nights.
The Sublime : No set time to play, just log in and group up with whoever is on. Most active after 8pm eastern. Thelanis server.
Mortal Voyage : Same as the Sublime, Argonnessen server. (not sure about most active time)
Extreme Explorers : Wednesday/Friday Nights usually starting 7 or 8pm Eastern, and Sunday Afternoons on the Sarlona server.
There are other guilds, but those are the ones I play with (Even deleting and re-rolling my characters I don't have enough slots on one server for all the builds I want to try )

Don't speak for me. *You* need more MMORPGs with it, not "we".
Furthermore, good luck finding one since the idea is niche.
There's dozens of successful niche games, and add to that alternative rules servers as a possibility. We get you and your 10 million friends like WoW...not everyone does...and there's plenty of room for everyone to find a game they like.

its just such a god damn shame that no ingame mechanism gives the players at least the choice to play on a perma death server....
I enjoyed the diablo2 hardcore servers and would love to see more hard core elements on mmorpgs these days..
pvp looting is just one of the few elements I would like to see in a mmo... I hope blizzard takes the next step with their upcoming mmo in 2014...
every gaming company does what blizzard does anyway...

Gratz mate....but dear god. Doing this permadeath system in EVE would be maddening O_o.
