Let's hope so...I know every class in each race/army will have some unique selections, but as to how many options there will actually be, I don't know. Hopefully alot.

I hate when it looks like a bunch of clones walking around in the starter zones

    same, but I'll settle.

I think most people are kind of sick of fantasy MMOs.

Warhammer 40K MMO is being produce.

    Here's an article at GameSpot:

    www.gamespot.com/news/6166560.html

    And for the devs site:

    www.vigilgames.com/

Now you just have to be patient ;)

Anyway on to the topic of this thread.

I'm sure Mythic is aware of what is being done on the MMORPGs world and that they have to be ready to make WAR the next game to be.

But yes like it was said I also hate to look exacty the same as everyone at the starting area.

It's an aesthetical thing only, we know this, but we must be able to cherish our avatar.

What I mean is nothing should be left out, all is important when doing a MMORPGs as we, the subs and hence the community, beta testers etc... are what make this game possible (not to mention all at Mythic but that's logical).

I think considering they're making armor dyes so that we don't all have to look a like (or we can for guild purposes) that they'll have pretty varying looks for each race.  I just hope they're not pansy / cheesey like we see alot of other games do.

btw I'm not sick of Fantasy MMOs...sci fi ones are always a huge disappointment.

I've always found sliders a pain in the ass not to mention it adds to system requirements making it more of a resource hog then necessary.   I'm all for pre built faces I just want them to vary ... sucks when they have only like 10 faces and half of them are the same but there's a stupid scar.

I'm a little worried that they may spend too much effort in the "trophy" side of customization, and not enough on the characteristics (hair/face/skin/etc). While it is great to play around with trophies, at the end of the day, your character's appearance includes their physical features.

I too hate seeing a million clones....

  • elvenangelelvenangel Member Posts: 2,205

They could give people 100s of choices and we'd still see alot of clones because some people just dont' frankly care and take the first couple of choices that come up that look cool.   Same thing with sliders..some people don't even bother or they all figure out exactly which settings look best and the changes are so minor that you still look the same.

Everquest 2 had alot of customization sliders n such and i still saw my wood elf ranger all over the place.

The only MMO I've ever had fun designing the character appearance in was CoH.  Every other game, I could care less.  The sliders that adjust eyebrow pitch, eye slant, nose size, and chin length...I could care less about.  I don't see that detail...ever...while playing the game, and I never understood why developers put that into the code.  I am in it for the challenging game play, not to play with Barbie dolls.

Now I understand people's opinions differ, and some might like doing that type of customization to their character's face, but my question is, when do you even look at it or comment about it?  While your party is fighting that dragon, do you stop and say "hey tank, nice nose?"

Maybe you think it adds to the uniqueness of your character, but people looking at you from any more than 2 feet from your face will think you look just like another from your race.  The items you pick up along the way normally hide any detail you might put on your character anyway.

The programmers putting in all of this time and effort coding the appearance detail is just something I would think could be better spent elsewhere.

    You're most welcome Cpt.Stubbing!

Thing is unfortuantely you'll probably have to wait about 3 years untill the game is launch. *sigh*

And by the way someone made a new thread today about Warhammer 40K (even put the same link as mine - lol).

But I'll just guess you won't find that much more information for now, maybe in a year or so?

Give me an SWG type toon creator. LOTS of sliders for EVERYTHING!! Everything from ears to skin color. Lts of options at start and the ability to change it all later on, like going to the barber or something lol.

if this is about all the screenies with the same looking faces don't worry, that usually add all the facial, characterization features in till about the middle or end of the beta.

    Bollocks!

I didn't even notice in the screens.. I was just wondering if any of the beta testers could let us know what kind of characterization there is.. but if they haven't added it nevermind heh

  • kintrikkintrik Member Posts: 194

beta testers couldn't share that information, and as others have said character customization is typically added toward the end of development, so right before open beta.

  • elvenangelelvenangel Member Posts: 2,205

The most beta testers can say is ... exactly this  ... "Hi I'm a War Beta Tester"  thats it.  Asking questions hoping a beta tester will give you the low down is pointless since it'll be removed pretty damn fast then that beta tester will be reported and loose his beta account.   The real leaks have so far been..almost non existant atleast here...atleast as far as I know anyway and they never have any real information.

Its probably best to save all your questions for when the NDA releases then post them up.  They'll get answered in about a hundred different ways lol

Yeah, you could really only tell wood elfs apart from their hair style.

They need sliders/options that change macro/large-scale qualities on a character for you to see the difference.

It should be mandatory  for all current MMO designers to test out the CoX character creation system for a while.

the problem is with sliders you still don't notice that big of a change other than client side Lag it creates in Open World games.   Yes yes pc's are coming along out there but I want to have huge battles of 24 vs 24 & more you can't do that if your computer is having to process 50 + faces.   Those sliders control information to shaders which means ALOT Of post processing has to go on and that Sucks for games based in large scale battles.

Besidse who has time to really stand infront of an goblin and check his face out when your getting your brains smashed in by an orc with a helmet on.

My hope is for no sliders other than one for short / tall & thin / fat

This is not necessarily true, but the devil is in the details. The "TOTAL" poly and texture count per char does not necessarily go up just because you have slider options. It's really dependent on how this stuff is implemented on the server side.

As for not noticing the difference with sliders, well I offer the following as a counter to your claim.

by not being noticable he ment during normal game play. most of the time you aren't looking at your own face, and people are not zoomed in close enough to even see the details.

so by running around the world you will stilll people that look like you namely because the details are very unnoticable from a distance and at  a glance.

That is why they are putting in the trophy system and specialization system for at glance differences. In the later levels with the number of available trophies and such for 2 characters to look a like at a glance, also with armor dyes. Then they have said the carrer specializing will have an astetic at a glance difference to it as well.
